    I started doing this a few years ago. I only take clubs that I know I need. Driver, 4i, 6i, 7i, PW, SW, putter. That eliminates what I call “hypothetical shots“. Say you’re 190 away. And you know you can get a consistent five iron there, but conditions(wind, wet, cut, lie) really call for one more club. Now you’re standing there thinking about whether it’s a 4i or a 5i rather than thinking about your actual stroke. And then when you finally pick your club you are still on the fence and you never commit to your shot usually
    Less decision making equals less stress equals better play equals better score.
    Breaking 75 like a baus almost everyday.

    • @JB-dj3dh
      @JB-dj3dh 3 года назад +2

      Same here. do this from time to time to work on iron approaches. generally i stay 7i thru PW and putter and just work 160yrd angles, landing areas and greens. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Matt your 4i is money!

      If your playing form the whites. I encourage you to try leaving the driver at home. One of my best rounds was using the driver once and I didn’t need it. It was fun to crush it, but that can go really wrong. Have fun out there.

      I love the half set. Its light and easy to carry and you get a lot of reps in with the few clubs you have. Club selection is easy: long miss or short miss? Walking carrying a small bag (vs pushing a cart or driving) is so much better mentally for the game too.

      Why do bring 6 and 7 when they’re so similar and not a 6 and 8?

  • @bafoon
    @bafoon 3 года назад +31

    I went back and counted… this was so close to the 6-6-6 method. I counted 6 GIR, 4 up and down, 8 birthday holes. Just 2 slightly better 56 degree wedges around the green and it would have been perfection. Great round Matt!

    • @duffer0309
      @duffer0309 3 года назад +6

      Also front 9 score was better than back 9 because Matt’s misses were in the correct spot. On the second nine misses we’re not all in the right spot. I was also impressed on the par 5’s from 348 Matt hit 7 iron, 7 Iron, instead of trying to blast a 4 iron and end up with an awkward distance. My friend shot 77 today, hit 5 greens but had 25 puts as he misses in the correct spot and has a master short game.
      Scoring is all about having a good short game and missing in the right spots! The “Way of the Playa”

      I only saw one bad shot. The teethed chip on 8. He hit a great second chip so still only made bogie. Chances are he would have done it anyway even with a good first chip. The whole round looked completely free of stress and good golf.

    Terrific round. Just goes to show all of us - you don’t always have to belt the driver on those short par 4s. Position yourself for a comfortable 2nd shot onto the green. Sometimes that means hitting a 5 iron off the tee while the boyfriends giggle at you. But the playa knows better.

    Matt, great VLOG. On Sunday, I took my driver and odd clubs out of my bag. I had my 3rd lowest round of the year. It’s amazing how well you swing when you are committed to the swing. There is no indecision should I hit a hard PW or easy 9 Iron. You have to make the best of what you have and you a more committed to your shots. I told my usual playing partner that 14 clubs are too many.

    I'm really new to golf and have picked up a set of old clubs from my brother in law, and I am so grateful that it was not a full set I have a Driver, 5 through 9 one wedge and my putter, the full lot would be so daunting and make me overthink what to hit. It also means I'm hitting the same clubs more often, especially the wedge which has helped a lot in getting me on the greens. But after watching this might take some more clubs out haha.

    Your golf tips have been amazing over the years, especially the texas sized landing options when strategizing. I really liked this video, have you analyzed the difference of your swing paths say the gorgeous tee shot from 16 with the 4 iron vs. the 17th tee shot. It appears there is a lesson here, similar in disc golf where you play with just your putter disc to perfect your form and make a more consistent athletic move when throwing. If I would guess a bit longer of a pause between swings with these shots and your old form would be back, sharp as a tack! Keep it up, you are the man!

    Everything else looks very solid, except some of those pitch shots. I am guessing that under normal circumstances there is not many pitch shots that need to be played, because you are hitting mostly wedge, 9, 8 irons into greens, therefore not many big misses. Short game and long iron game is very impressive :) - but this exercise really does help to show areas of the game you can improve.

    Why use more clubs? I think the handful-of-clubs practice rounds are very helpful but I think we ultimately play our absolute best with at least a few more tools at our disposal. My scores have improved recently by adding a couple clubs: 7 wood and sand wedge. For years I struggled to get out of bunkers because I just didn't understand that the sand wedge was fundamentally a differently designed club.
    I regularly play rounds in which I basically only use 7 or 8 clubs: driver, 7 wood, 7i - 9i, PW, SW, putter...although there is usually at least one punch out of the trees with a 4i or something else depending on the situation. So, do we need 14? NO! but I do think we need more than 3 plus a putter.

    Taking 14 clubs won’t hinder you if your decision making is correct. I would agree that if you have a club in the back your not comfortable hitting like a 3 wood by all means eliminate it . Fill that bag with clubs your are fully comfortable hitting whatever number that is once obvious by the rules it’s less than 14 then that’s the number of clubs one should use . It will obviously vary from golfer to golfer . Like a pro can comfortably hit every club so it’s beneficial for them to have the maximum choice so they can make the optimal choice. I would argue that this decision process can extended to the amateur regardless of the number of clubs once they know what clubs and shots that can reliability hit with those clubs .

      @@GolfSidekick It's not easy, but you may find you do something similar on the range without thinking about it!

    What's the deal with the white lines around the hole? Not common in my neck of the woods.

    Can someone please explain the circles on the greens. Never seen those in the US.

      My guess is that they're doing that as a silent version of "inside the leather." I imagine that many of the courses in the videos are resort style because of the caddies and such, and this would just be an added resort feature so that everybody is given the same benefit on putts inside 2-3 feeet.

      The courses aren't resort courses - I don't think I've played any resort courses in Thailand - it's not really a thing here. The caddies are mandatory here on every course from high end to countryside army courses. Supposedly to increase employment opportunity.
      It's a gimme circle that I have seen very few people actually use so I don't know why they keep painting them. I've never played with anyone who said "yea its in the circle, that's a gimme".

      Do those come up easy with water or something or are there just white circles all over the greens when they change hole locations

      Even though I'd never take a gimme, I like the Idea of visualizing a ring like that around the hole. For me helps reduce stress when chipping.

    Man, I feel absolutely terrible today. I just got done 18 holes and halfway thru I had to take a call, so I let a group of 4 older guys through. They were playing pretty slow but that never bothers me at all. However, I was playing right behind them for the most part. Theyd be near the green and I'd hit my tee shot, then wait out by my ball waiting for them to finish. I had no problem waiting, but I just feel terrible that they felt rushed
    :( hope they didnt. Is it okay to play behind ppl like that? I've been playing a long time but today the course was packed so there was groups behind me too. I just dont want to make old folk feel like they have to play super fast. They weren't terribly slow

      Let it go. Then in future just hang back. Guilt is a wasted emotion

      I worry more about playas behind than in front, especially when I’m a single much more concerned with not holding up those behind than waiting. If noone’s behind me I’ll just chip and putt around the green I just finished until group ahead is well clear.

    I'm currently saving for a driver but now thinking if I even need one. Ive got a 3 hybrid that goes 200 yards do i need more than this? I still havnt broke 90 yet been playing for a year.

      It can be a monster addition to the bag if it suits you. I would say a PROPERLY FITTED driver can be what takes you from 92 to 83 in 6 months...but only if it's properly fitted and used WISELY and doesnt cost you strokes after a good assessment to see if it helps your game
