    I have been watching you since 2011 I can honestly say I think you’re the most straightforward no BS golf coach. You don’t push any brand you don’t push the technology you just keep it simple. I really appreciate you you have helped my golf game more than I can ever thank you.

    10 clubs in my bag. I walk a lot so I’ve reduced it to what I need, not what I “should” have. Driver, 5w, hybrid, 7i-AW, 56° and putter. All the shots are in those 10 clubs. Btw, I’m 56 yo, been playing for 35 years and I play off 5. Cheers!

      I own way more than 14 clubs that could go in the bag depending on where I play and how I feel and that alone has helped me realize I probably only need to fool with learning to hit about 10 of them.

    When I first started I was told loads of twaddle about you need all this stuff. After many years of buying all this stuff, if I was to start again I would have a 5 wood, 7 9 54* and a putter that’s it !!! played like this the other week, big smiles all round and only in the rough once, let’s bring fun back into golf

    Totally agree about the half set Mark. That's how our first started and for the same reason. Still play with a half set occasionally as it does get you thinking about how to use your clubs other than just the full shot with that loft.

    Love the tip about having a half set. If I’m hoofing it and carrying the bag that’s something I would totally do. That in combination of randomized practice has helped me too. I made sure to practice some funky shots when I’m at the range that simulated situations I know I’d find myself in. It makes the practice quite fun.

    As a lower handicapper I love playing half set golf. Most people mid to higher handicap could benefit from it so they have to take a club extra into greens, which more often than not turns out to be the right club because they don’t carry it as far as they think.

    Real interesting comment about the iron distances. I am one of those who struggles to get my 7 iron to go much further than my 8 iron, which is my go to club for a pretty large range of distances - I go from my 8 to my hybrids. Even in the hybrid arena I use my 31 degree then move to my 23. My 27 and 20 degree hybrids never leave the bag. I am getting new irons and hybrids soon and might build a set with this in mind and not even purchase clubs I don't need. I could always go back and get them later if need be. Some real good points and a timely review. Oh and you talked me into the Cleveland Hy-Wood and Smart Sole chipper which I love.

    That’s why he’s the GolfGuru. Fantastic little video! For myself… in a winter round of golf I decided to take only 8 clubs with me. And I stuck with that bag til now ;) Dr, 3h, 5h, 7, 9, SW, Putter … and my Chipper. This club really helped my short game. Still thankful that Mark was so ambitious about that super little helper. Top!!

  • @urbanosity

    I've been trying to work out what clubs to keep in the bag, especially since I struggle with fairway woods. I also picked up the Cleveland Chipper based on your videos. Something I noticed when I got a new set of irons was the gapping at the low end is tough. These strong lofted game improvement irons (Cobra Speedzone in my case) are tough to blend with wedges. My PW from that set is a 42.5! So now I'm looking at going from PW to a 46 wedge, 52 wedge, 56 wedge.

    Thank you.. no really.. started golf last week. Never swung a club, besides a putting course! Borrowed a set and wondered why he had two woods. One, after watching your video, is for the fairway; already I’ve learned something. The rest of the video also helped tremendously with the selection I have.

    I had one of my best rounds in a 3 clubs plus putter tourney - shot 75 with a driver, 6 iron, 52 degree wedge and a putter. One thing about hitting a variety of shots with a 6 iron is that you gain familiarity and confidence. Growing up, my course required lots of long irons, so I thought nothing of pulling out a Hogan 2 iron. Somehow this has never worked with my putter.

    I learned to play with a "half-set" 30+ years ago. I had all the odd numbered clubs and then a year or two later I filled in the gaps with the even numbered clubs. I think new players get intimidated with the high cost of clubs but you can get into the game affordably by grabbing a used/partial set of clubs. Good advice.

  • @lrwebb869
    @lrwebb869 2 года назад

    This is good advice. I think what’s important now is to know your lofts. I’ve played since I was 16 but never seriously and never really knew about gear tech. I recently got some second hand Ping G irons (5-PW and added a LW) and I’ve learned about different lofts and how they’ve changed over the years. A new 7i is more like an old 6i. No matter what you buy you should be able to find out the lofts online. 25 years ago I had a set of irons 3-SW. Now, irons tend to start at a 5 or 6 and only go to a PW. Then you fill the gaps with hybrids and wedges.
    P.s. 10 clubs. 3W, 4H, 5-PW, LW, Putter.

    Great vid. I like the freedom of carrying a bag, and I’ve progressively reduced the number of clubs that I use. Stabilised now on 9 clubs: driver, 5 utility, 7, 8, 9, PW, GW, 56 degree wedge & putter. My 6 iron and 5 wood stay in the garage - when I carried these I rarely actually used them in a round. When I get around to it, may get another 56 degree wedge with different bounce - to swap in when playing parkland courses, rather than my home links. If I had a big bag and trolley guess would put in various other clubs, but why not keep it simple?

    3w, 7w, 5h, 6-p, sw, putter. I’ve just recently added a new driver (Jetspeed NEW :)) 3-5 irons and lob wedge stay at the house. Recently my 2 teenage daughters just took up golf. I got them a starter set that they share. One has evens the other has odds and we add in pieces as they need them. Too many seems to over complicate things. They ask should I hit a 6 or 7? My answer “which ever one you feel most confident hitting for this shot.” So far they are having fun and don’t mind putting in some work. Enjoy your content! Good stuff!

    Love this video. Playing off and on for 20+ years, and I still have issues with some clubs going the same distance. I pared down the bag a few years ago - Driver, 3W or 1i, Heavenwood, 4H, 6i, 8i, 47, 60 and putter, but sometimes I will carry fewer. Hasn't really affected my scores, but makes it easier to hoof it around the course. Whatever keeps the game fun, go for it!

    Aside from the financial aspect there is, as you rightly said, a lot to learn and a lot of fun to be had playing different shots with each club.
    I also think it is a great way to bring people into the game.

    Sm8 54° wedge d grind

    Don't like fairway woods especially a 3 wood, and I can open my 54° up as much as I need to play any shot I want

    I sometimes just play an 8 iron for 9 holes, I more often score just as well as with a full bag. Bunkers can be tricky but putting is ok just blade-ing it. Opening the face and down the grip I can turn it into a PW. Really good fun and doesn't half get in your playing partners heads.

    Great advice, Mark. Beginners don’t spend a lot of money on a set. As Mark said, get a half set, and for heaven’s sake, don’t get fitted. You’re not ready, spend the money on lessons, your swing will change, and it’ll probably be a dramatic change. So down the drain goes those fitted clubs that don’t work for you anymore. Through good lessons, your swing has changed for the better. Now you made need new clubs, and get fit for the new ones, after playing for a couple of years, and learning more about your game. Cheers.

    When I started playing golf some 45 years ago at the age of 10 a beginner set consisted of a 1w, 3w, 5, 3i, 5i, 7, 9i and a putter. If you were lucky you may have a chipper or an old sand wedge. Times have changed and I think the game was a little easier back then. Oh and the woods were still shafted and either persimmon or laminated maple and the clubs were forged.

    He’s basically suggesting we could get away with 6-8 degrees of gapping with clubs and really just need to find one reasonable fairway wood to hit.
    I have the Cleveland Launcher XL 3W, 5W, 7W, & 5H. I enjoy hitting my Ping G400 driver so the 3W is “useless” as I hit the 5W well enough off the deck. I know what the 5H can do. While I do like the 7W off the tee of a long par 3, it’s more of a luxury than a necessity.
    Strong lofts mean I only have a 7-PW (28 to 42 degrees) Really only need 2 of those.
    However, I’m a sucker for wedges. I have that chipper all the way through a 65 degree wedge. My 46 CBX2 wedge is THE cat’s meow. The chipper, my CBX2 50 and the Smart Sole 4 58 degree is probably all that’s necessary to complement the 46. The 54 (a previous favorite) is expendable, but the 65 is kind of fun.
    Anyway I could see being happy with 10-12 clubs in the bag if I wanted to narrow my focus, but I’ve played my local par 70 after work with just the 7 clubs I had for a range session before work.

    Half set: Driver, 19 degree fairway wood, 5, 7, 9, sand wedge, and putter. All carried in a “Sunday” bag. Six balls, two gloves, assorted tees and ball marker with divot tool and an insulated water bottle. Walking as the game is meant to be played. Easy decisions on clubs and distances “5 iron is too much then use 7, or 9 iron is too little, grip down an inch or so and use a smooth 7…”etcetera. Simplifies club selection and makes for a more confident swing and faster round. I play better walking with a half set than riding with a full set.

      My very first golf bag was a second-hand old set of clubs, mostly titleist DCI irons, a cple blades, an Acushnet bullseye putter, and a hickory stick sand wedge (atleast i think it was a sand wedge). It was a lot of fun. My driver was a Dunlop Loco, and I still think that was one of the most forgiving drivers ever made. I was always under the assumption drivers were easy to hit. Then I bought a new one & sliced every shot. So i switched right back to the Dunlop. The Titleist TSR2 is the closest I've found to that level of forgiveness so far

    I think a if you are starting out I think it is better for you to have less clubs but be confident in what clubs you do have. For example you don't need 4 different wedges you can get by with just a SW. Get really good at working your SW and your PW. A GW and LW are not needed. Long Irons can be switched out to hybrids so you reduce the clubs you really need. I think a Driver, 3 Wood, 4 Hybrid, 7-pw, SW and Putter or 9 clubs can get you by just fine. And since new people game changes so fast theres no point in getting 14 clubs just to get a whole new set.

    3 iron(21°) to PW(46°), then
    51°, 56°, 60° x 2(different bounce/grind). Tomorrow one of the 60° goes and a 64° come in the bag.

    The game would be much less expensive to play if the USGA and R&A simply limited the number of clubs carried to EIGHT. The 8 would be up to the individual, but a balanced set up could be... Driver, Fairway Wood, Hybrid, Mid-Iron, Short-Iron, Wedge, Sand Club and Putter.

      @@clerns oh, it’s not a bad thing, even though the chipper is a weird choice, it’s just sort of funny/interesting. The replacement rinky dink, double pitching wedge plus gap wedge, and chipper setup is just extremely off the wall

    • @adamseidel9780
      @adamseidel9780 2 года назад +2

      I’ll add as an aside to my comment: once I broke my seven iron and it took like 6 weeks on the middle of the season for the replacement to arrive. That’s what ultimately helped me learn to hit knockdown shots with my short irons. I could already do it with my wedges, but I had to learn to do it all the way down to six iron then to fill the gap for the six. Definitely gives an extra option and not much in golf is more fun than having to hit a non stock shot for either shape or distance and having it work just right with precision. Definitely makes you feel like a pro for a second.

    It is striking that when one plays with a half set, or even fewer, one doesn’t score much worse than with a full bag. And there are advantages to forcing oneself to improvise, it develops skills. But in the end it makes sense to carry as many clubs as you’re allowed to. Why wouldn’t you give yourself the best possible chance of having the right club for the task at hand?

  • @AB-nv7bz
    @AB-nv7bz 2 года назад

    It all depends on your skill level. I would say putter, sw, pw/9i, 7/6i, 2/3h, driver.
    Until you get consistent with your strike and have decent power, the clubs are really bunched up.
    Some old guy at the range was asking why i had so many wedges. Bro your pw doesn't even go 100 yards, so your gaps are way smaller than mine.
