I’m 70 years old, and don’t hit it far anymore. After my drive I’m still a long way from the green on most par fours, so my 5 wood is a great club to get it close on the second shot, and also great for par fives and long par three’s.
The older I get, the more l love the five wood; keeps the game fun for me.

    1. Putter - Can save a round w/ this (I have the Touon Las Vegas as well)
    2. 4 Hybrid - Great off the tee and around greens
    3. Gap Wedge - Reliable approach to plan for, Scoring club
    4. Driver - Knowing my shape, takes one side of danger out of play
    5. 7 iron - First CB in an MB/CB combo set for extra forgiveness, tee club on short par 4's and approach iron on long par 4's
Honourable mention: 60 degree - Very versitile but wouldn't say I rely on it as much anymore

Most important clubs in my bag:
    1. Driver - Ping G410 SFT with stiff Alta CB 65 gram shaft, Tour Velvet standard size grip. - I was fitted for this driver, and I can hit it really well.
    2. 7 Iron - Callaway XR OS, steel Speedstep 80 regular flex shaft, Golf Pride CP2 midsize grip. - Iron Set self fitted, play the best I ever have with these irons.
    3. Pitching Wedge - Callaway XR OS, specs match 7 Iron.
    4. Putter - Scotty Cameron 2020 Special Select Newport, 35" shaft, standard SC Grip. - stock, not fitted
    5. 56 Degree Wedge - Titleist Vokey SM56-10, Dynamic Golf steel shaft, Lamkin grip. - favorite out of the 4 Vokeys in my bag (50, 54, 56, 60), less likely to skull a ball with it than with my 60.

I play backwards. Putter is #1 as it is the most used club in a round by far. Then 56, 48 and 60 degree wedges, driver, then mid irons then long irons. I do play the Stealth Plus driver this year and love it! No loss in distance and fairway percentages increased by 20%

Current driver is a 2016 M2 now with a Small Batch Evenflow Riptide CB 6.0 shaft. Technological marvel. Bought it off eBay last spring in excellent condition w a senior stock shaft for $170, peanuts compared to todays $550 drivers. Was custom fit last year 2 times for shafts. 10.5 deg loft turned down 2 notches to 9 deg which opens the face 3° and basically eliminates my left hook and also lowers the spin by 300 RPMs.
Love the feel and forgiveness is amazing. No need to change. Maybe losing a few yards distance and forgiveness but not worth spending $550 plus for a new driver.
My 2nd most fav. club is my new odyssey eleven putter. Custom fit via SamPutt lab 2 months ago at Club Champion. They got my lie angle spot on at 62.5 degrees, length at 33 inches and SW at D1

    1) original red Taylormade Spider putter (rarely 3 putt) from new probably 5 years old. 2) Ping G410 2020 Driver, fitted. 3) TaylorMade RSI pitching wedge fitted about 6 years ago. 4) Taylormade RSI 5 iron, great recovery club, play it low, punch shots and can shape a lovely low draw, 5) Vokey SM7 52 degree wedge in oil can finish, great versatility.

For me it's 1. Driver (I'm not long and without a solid driving game several par 4s on my home course are at the edge of or even beyond reach). 2. Putter (though the make or model is less important, I tend to bring my own putting idiosyncrasies to any putter shape). 3. Pitching wedge (does a similar job for me as your 50° does for you, I use it anywhere from 100yds and in, often around the green too). 4. Hybrid (I struggle with fairway woods, getting into hybrids has made longer par 4s reachable). 5. 6-iron (my 150yd club, a frequent par 4 approach and par 3 distance for me).
My driver is a Taylormade M2 2017 in a 55g s flex (my swing speed is modest but reg shafts just feel too whippy!). Nothing in my bag is fitted. That's a big failing and something that I really should correct.

Driver, 3-wood, putter, wedges. Middle clubs are rarely used - only when driver or 3 wood has not put me where a wanted to be. Driver was Ping G30, then I was offered (for £150 new) a Cobra F9 with a really flexible shaft. Improved performance at first but now gone back to standard senior shaft after fitting.

For me the most important club is the driver, it sets the tone for the round and I enjoy my golf far more when that behaves. 2nd putter a good day vs bad day 6 or 7 shot difference on the card. My 56 degree wedge is 3rd, I play off 13 so often find myself with a chance of par if I get up and down green side or 30/40 yards so like my putter a good day with that really makes a difference to my card. 4th is my 6 iron...... when I'm having a mare this club is like my old slippers just feels so comfortable, 165 yards carry if I ditch the ego can reach most p4s with 2 of these and a flick with a wedge. And 5th the 4 hybrid (probably situational at my home course) perfect distance for the long par 3 200-215 yards pin depending also leaves a great distance on 2 shorter par 4s and Sunday best drives can reach 2 of the par 5s with it.

My driver. I've never been consistent with it, until this year. I was "fitted" for the mavrik sub zero when it came out. Never could trust it. I'm not brand biased, at all. So, this year, I tried several. The Rogue ST Max LS ended up on top, and it hasn't disappointed yet! Confidence off of the tee is where it begins. I'm also super happy with my new putter, the Ping Tyne 4.

    1. Putter 2. PW 3. Driver 4. 56 5. 2 iron
I use a new (this season bought last years model) mavrik head and I’m not fitted but I bought a 6.5 70g project x smoke shaft and it’s a cannon but that’s why the two iron made my top five cuz sometimes I want a little more rollout if there’s a downslope or a little less distance overall.
I like your point about every club being important but this video is also important we all have tendencies and clubs we need to accommodate it.

Interesting topic today, James. I would say, in order they are 54*, 9i, 8i, hybrid and putter. I don't always hit the driver straight (currently have a 2 way miss) but scoring clubs have been my saving grace lately. and to answer your initial question, my driver is 5 years old, was fitted, my Mizuno MP54s are purchased online (very close to my perfect specs) and wedges are updated every 2-3 years depending on use - this year with all the rain, not much golf has been played thus far. but the Scotty Cameron GoLo has been my best purchase over the past 10 years- Bar none !

My most Important is my driver Cobra F9 set to 9’ because if I mess up with it it’s 3 bad and if it’s a big one it’s saving me shots.
2nd my gap wedge Sm8 52’ simply the course where I play the 100yard is the 2nd shot frequently due to the lay out of holes.
3rd is my 8i because it’s the iron I control the best and can hit constantly replacing a 9i or soft 7i.
4th putter I have only been playing 6 months and my putting is bang average so I have not developed a national swing yet and am not good enough to blame the club yet.

My most important club in the bag is my Scotty Cameron Select Fast Back I think I got it in 2015 the one with the Red Cross for alignment! I have more one putts than three putts with that putter, and I can’t see ever changing it out! I also had never had a round where I had under 30 putts before I bought it, and now to many to count!
Second most important club in my bag is my Callaway Maverick 3 wood, it’s the only club that I have ever hit a hole-one with! 240 yards Par 4 on a short (6000 yards) municipal golf course! Also statistically my most accurate club off the tee, and has found many many par 5s in two for me too! No pun intended!!
Third has to be my Vokey 54 s grind 10 degrees of bounce wedge. That is my go to club around the greens for almost any lie, and just about any shot inside of 75 yards (never hit full swings with it). Can’t live or play well without those three clubs!

  • @davidfowles1252

Hmm I tried to resist the Driver as the primary club but you are right, blaze that smoke wagon round the course and you are king for a day and being in play and long is always beneficial for scoring so my offering would be:
    1) Honma XP-1 9.5° Stiff Driver - Just works for me
    2) Approach Wedge (SM8 50°) - The scoring club, learn to use it for full, half and 3/4 shots just smooth and less loft gives better results and consistency
    3) Putter (Ping Tyne 2) - Has to be as to score you have to hole that little white bugger
    4) 2 Hybrid (Ping G410) set to standard position - Pretty much replaced any woods in the bag and a go to for tight fairway tee shots, off the deck, from the rough and the 'Dennis' (chip and runs)
    5) 6 Iron (TM P790 2021) just seems to be the club of the moment in my bag. On a long Par 4 or 5 when not going for the green. an awkward lie or need to shape it, just suits the 6 Iron.
Not much to choose between the rest of the bag as I have a full range of wedeges and Irons that generally behave

#1 = Putter, nothing else to say!
#2 = Short pitch & chipping wedge as the more up & downs I get, the lower my score.(for me, this is my 54* PXG Sugar Daddy)
#2 = Long pitch & 3/4 swing wedge as this is where it's important to get it close for a birdie putt(for me, this is my 50* PXG Gen3 0311-P)
#4 = Favorite tee club(might not be driver, but mine is a PXG Gen4 0811-X 9*, Diamana S60 Limited X-Flex, and was fitted at PXG)
#5 = Full swing PW as this is where I find myself most often on par 4's after a good drive and need to get it onto the green for a chance at birdie.

I don't know honestly how to ranks the other aspects of my clubs. Irons and woods
But Putter is most important at this point. Followed closely by wedges.
You can hit everything else well and screw your score by 3 or even 4 putting
You can save rounds with taking 1 extra shot in exchange for a 1 or 2 putt.

For reference I'm a senior golfer shoot 85-87 from 6200 yds.
#1 Cobra LTDx 10.5 (upgraded from the Cobra F9) fitted with the Ventus Velocore blue 5A stupid long out of the screws (that's 230+ for this old man) but most importantly tighter dispersion (for me), off center still in the 210-220 range. Driver usually sets the tone for the day, good or bad.
#2 is the 4hybrid, old M6 but it's my fairway finder on bad driver days I still get 180yds out of it and usually 2nd shot on par 5s since I have 0 chance of reaching in 2 normally.
#3 Odyssey EXO Rossie putter, should probably be #1 since it's the most consistent club in the bag.
#4 CobraF9 G wedge solid 90yd club(90 yds is my lay up distance when reaching the green isn't happening) and chipping club around the greens, .
#5 TM Sim Max 6hybrid (stole this off Ebay for $87) 150-165max, my 'keep it in front of me' club and par 3 center of green finder (that's the plan anyways, doesn't always work out).

    2. Driver (Once I dialed in my driver and even if I’m not striking my irons pure, I’m up and around the green more often)
    3. 56 degree wedge (my Vokey SM8 is my money clubs that I chip, pitch, and full swing with and I love it)
    4. Hybrid (my hybrid I can hit out of the rough, off the tee, or off the deck 200+ yards and is a club like I feel like I can’t mishit)
    5. 8 iron (everyone loves a 7 iron but I love my 8 iron because I can hit it 75% in scoring range or hit a full shot on a par 3 and stop it on a dime)

Which clubs I enjoy using the most isn't the same as which ones I find most important to scoring. I enjoy hitting my driver immensely, but it's my short game tools I count as most important. Putter, wedges, irons, hybrids, driver, and fairway wood is the way I would order them where importance is concerned.
And I feel confident that I'm correctly ordering them at least for my game and experience. I've played an entire season with no woods in the bag and while I shot no records scores, I still beat my playing partners about as often. I also learned something about course management along the way and believe it made me a better all around golfer.

Taylormade Stealth #1, PXG Gen 4 irons, gained 25 yards with LAGolf shafts. So much more fun with these’s shafts. Wedges new Sugar Daddy PXG’s just great around the greens. BGT shaft change on my putter, took away my small misses. Start line is so nice, dropped 4 points on my handy cap! Cheers

I really like this post. Kinda makes you think about what clubs to really warm up on before a round. 1. Driver 10.5° Sim Max D. 3 year's old somewhat fitted put a custom shaft on it. Project X Hzerdous Black extra stiff 75g 48" I put this shaft on to slow my back swing down, 2. 5 Wood Big Bertha steelhead stiff shaft, 3. 8 iron 2020 Maverick stiff, 4. 7 wood Big Bertha warbird regular flex. 5. Cleveland RTX 52.

Without doubt the most important club is the one used most, first must be putter, second whatever you hit off the tee, driver usually. Then it varies depending on the course.

putter, irons, wedges, hybrids/fairway woods, driver. you use putter the most, driver can be replaced on any hole, and often will result in accuracy.

  • @tszampruch

I'd say #1 for me is my putter. I use it 18-40 times a round, and it needs to be the club I'm most comfortable with. #2 is my irons 3i-9i. If my driver doesn't fit the hole, or I'm not comfortable with it, I can confidently pull out my 3i. Next would be my wedges because if I get close to the green, but start to play tennis around the green, then my score is gone. Finally, my M6 would be my #4. It was the first club I ever bought, and I got it used. It's hit or miss, but if I can get on it, my round is great.

  • @nildex34

4 hybrid because I'm always short off the tee for par 5s, 52/pw landing on the green from layups, driver to not put it in the water or bushes off the tee, 3 wood when the driver isn't working, 8 iron for bump&run and approaches then everything else.

  • @normlang1994

    Driver, putter, wedges.
When I hit my driver well, keeping the ball in the fairway, I score well. When I hit it poorly, it costs me multiple strokes (lost balls & OB shots). For me it's about consistency and control...not distance.
I use a 20+ year old putter. Putting for me, has very little to do with the club, but I obviously really like the putter I use.
I use my PW, GW & 56 a LOT and I'll be replacing them ALL this year for models with more bounce. Based on content by James and other creators, I've come to the conclusion that more bounce will improve my results.

Those are my exact five as well - although I'm torn between my 56 and my 21-degree hybrid as the fifth because I can basically do everything with my 52, which I do almost all my green side chipping and pitching with, and my 62 which is my bunker club and severe short side rescue club - that hybrid, on the other hand, is so valuable in other situations like in rough and to hit high into greens.

    1. Putter - using an old Mizuno solid steel putter. I tried the Kirkland KS1 and I just wasnt happy with it. 2. SandWedge- I switched to the milled grind Taylormade 56°. Bc my approach shots arent the best I probably use this Club 17 holes. 3. Driver: Im gaming a Taylormade M1 set to 10.5° with a high draw setting. 4. Callaway Big Bertha 5 Wood (2018) set to 20°. 5. Callaway Big Bertha 3 wood (2017) set to 17° and lets me tee up and anything over 215 approach to the green.

I have a new Callaway Rogue triple diamond driver. And yes, probably most important. When hit well I get most enjoyment from it and if my driver is off on a day it can turn my round upside down. My Mizuno irons are important as well but they are so easy I don't have to think about them much
