- In this video, Kat and I make a haiku book with a wooden cover made from quarter sawn white oak. We use the xTool D1 laser (bit.ly/30ZCagR) to burn some of her artwork onto the front and back covers of the book. The haiku book is going to be a birthday gift for her friend that she made from a collection of haikus from friends and family. There's a lot of love poured into this gift.
I also engraved my logo on a couple of inexpensive candle holders to try out the xTool rotary attachment. It was simple to use and the result was great. I'm really happy with the xTool D1 laser. It has ample capacity to accommodate objects up to 16" x 17" an has an accuracy of up to 0.08mm x 0.08 mm. It combines the beams to 2 laser modules to achieve 10W of laser output power. The 10W D1 is equivalent to 15W of an ordinary diode laser machine. It comes with free software called Laserbox Basic and you can use the laser both online or offline, so a connection to the Internet is not required.
You can find everything else I used in this project at my Amazon storefront at www.amazon.com/shop/woodumakeit.

Nice job Mike and Mike’s daughter🤙
What a thoughtful and beautiful gift for a friend. Nice work Mike and Kat.
I would and will. The only difference is I would make a wooden hinge for it.
Even better!
Another great project and while I may never make a book cover, you gave me some good ideas on a piano hinge that I've got to install soon. - Chris
I don't see the need to push off cut side with hand. May cause a pinch on the blade.
I saw her as being clearly uncomfortable with that second cut due how close her hand was to the blade
Wow! I cringed watching this. This is a poor habit and don’t see good future outcomes. I don’t care how long you’ve been woodworking.
What a great idea
It makes me want to make one
Now to learn haiku
Homemade gifts infused with love and thoughtfulness...the very best kind. Nicely done you two.
Very cool project. I love taking my kids into the workshop.
The only difference is that they are not allowed to wear loose clothing or dangling jewellery....
Yeah, I didn't even notice until I edited the video and I cringed when I saw that.
Really beautiful work, guys! Fantastic looking book! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
What a beautiful video of father/daughter interaction. My Dad was not able to do this type of bonding experience and I have appreaciated seeing the two of you. Gifts can be in all sizes and variations. God Bless you Both, you have ministered to my heart this eveing!!
I love this! My dad made one similar decades ago but on a much larger scale for a photo album. He had used wing nuts to fasten them together.
Another beautiful piece of wooden art. You are truly blessed sir. Best of luck 🍀to you and your family as well ❤️👍🏻
I wouldn’t make it but I’m glad you two did.
cool project, maybe next time youll use leather for the front cover and on the back, a beautiful piece of wood.
Love the design and plan on making this as a Christmas present. How would you change your design to allow the book to open all the way? Maybe a wooden back with the hinge incorporated with pins?
Yes sir. I'll make it
Hi, I can’t find the link listed for the hinge. Wondering if you could provide it! Cool project!!
Here's a link to the one that I used: www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-1-16-in-x-12-in-Matte-Black-Square-Radius-Piano-Hinge-28806/314151799
Great project! I noticed in your videos you use Odies Oil to finish your projects. Is this a substitute for lacquer or polyurethane?
