    nice touch on the gouging. to help get an even dye job, moisten the leather evenly by spraying it lightly with water. moisten. not soak. it also helps to buff after the dye dries a bit. you do excellent work and your videos are awesome. thanks for sharing.

    Hey bother; drilling all those holes reminds me of the cribbage boards I have made. Each one was hand measured and laid out. Can you say TEDIOUS! People have been asking for more boards but I have been way to busy to even start one. Maybe I’ll do layouts at home while the wife watches T.V. Drilling all those can can make a guy see triple. :-0 Great work thanks for sharing.

      haha, totally tedious! this project had so many tedious parts, the carving, the drilling, the stitching. It never fails that a project entails more than you originally thought. I need to learn cribbage! that would be some serious drilling too and

    Great project! Just pointing out that that isn't how contact cement works. :P If you let the two surfaces dry for 5-15 minutes ( weldwood works well at 15) then the pieces bond together instantly, no clamps needed. Not sure how strength is going to differ not letting it dry to tack beforehand, but it is designed to work the way I described. Other than that, all other leather pointers were already in the comments before me, so that about covers it.

    One thing I like to do to even out my dye on the leather is to pre moist the leather. Just to put a little water (not soaking it), when once the dye is on the leather use a rag and rub it down with rubbing alcohol. It will help the dye penetrate the leather deeper and even out the color. This was an awesome project, one that I might have to try myself! Great Job!

    Beautiful project. The combination of wood and leather textures really works.
    I keep a roll of freezer paper in my shop for glueups. You know, the brown paper the butcher uses with one shiny side. Heavier and cheaper than wax paper. The plastic covered surface on one side (the shiny side) of the freezer paper resists glue very well and moisture in the glue doesn't affect it at all.

    I've been doing leather work for a little over a year now. I bought a cheap airbrush and airbrush compressor at Horrible Freight, and it works well for spraying leather dye. I get a very even finish, and I can build the color up in coats. Another effect that can be done with an airbrush is to spray a darker coat around the edges of the leather and feather it in to the main body (like some guitars are painted). Great job, but I suggest ditching the stitching groover. I think the stitching looks better when not constrained by the groove.

    • @ThirdCoastCraftsman
      @ThirdCoastCraftsman  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the tips Lex, the airbrush is a good idea. Ill have to look into that more. if you dont use the groover, how to keep a consistent distance from the edge?

    • @lexboegen
      @lexboegen 6 лет назад

      I use a pair of dividers to scribe a line. I set the dividers to my desired distance from the edge, and run one leg along the edge of the leather and the other leg lightly pressed against the leather to leave a faint line. I then put the center of the stitching chisel on the line, so that the stitching hides the line when done. Look up Ian Atkinson and Armitage Leather here on RUclips. That's where I learned 99% of what I know about leather working. Both of them have excellent tutorials, and are good teachers.

    A few things about the leather. For one, if you want to save yourself some time (and money) for burnishing, take a dowel, 3/8, 1/2 or 1/4, whatever you have, chuck it into your drill press (or lathe) and using a chisel and file, cut yourself some grooves and round them over. You can then just have it chucked into your drill press on a high rpm and burnish in seconds what would normally take much longer. for dying the leather, the method you used will get you a nice splotched distressed look, which I find is more appealing to my customers. If you want an even solid color, you'll want to spray your dye with an airbrush or other HVLP sprayer. I use an HVLP sprayer with a 1.0 tip. No thinning needed. Beeswax works great on the edges, but you'll probably want to treat with something like gum tragacanth as well. You probably noticed that, once you dyed the leather, it became much more stiff. If you want to add some life back into it and really help protect against the leather cracking on that binding, treat it with some neatsfoot oil. There are 2 fellows on youtube that really go in depth into leatherwork and I have learned a great deal from them. Nigel at Armitage Leather: ruclips.net/channel/UC8urn9l3pybW5LztUa6zbOA and Ian at Leodis Leather: ruclips.net/channel/UCLkCG-505-1t0rYlgBTSnpQ

    really nicely done .. hey, to stop that bowing of the cover, glue a nice sheet of paper or cloth on the inside, this will pull the wood back into alignment. Commonly done on book covers. OH, and take a look at Japanese Bookbinding Techniques I think they'll be right up your alley.

    For dying a large area like that on your leather, it will be less splotchy if you use a larger applicator like a sponge or wool remnants. Also, 2 lighter coats can help too. Do the first coat in circles and come back a second time and go back and forth one direction (like you do with wood grain and finishes) and it should even out a bit also. To keep it from darkening further with a top coat, wait for the full dry time of the dye and then buff it with a clean dry cloth and the extra pigment from the dye will be removed and won't darken as much with the top coat.

    • @ThirdCoastCraftsman
      @ThirdCoastCraftsman  6 лет назад

      Thanks so much for the tips! Do different types of dyes, (such as oil dyes) blotch less? i believe mine are alcohol based

    • @lifeanddeath84
      @lifeanddeath84 6 лет назад

      Third Coast Craftsman yes, oil dyes tend to blotch less in my experience. Also, prepping the leather with a Deglazer can help also. Deglazer is sort of like a pre-stain wood conditioner for wood.

    Hey Chris, I am really enjoying your videos and this one is terrific! Love the mixed-media and the simplicity of the project, yet it comes off as very complex and technical. Well done!!

    That turned out good, it's ironic that I was just given leather tools for Christmas. I actually have a slab of hickory in front of me right now with a knife sheath that I'm making for my wife. Did you make that during our deep freeze temp days? I was out cutting/splitting wood for warmth instead, leather is going to be my indoor hobby instead.
    Happy new year.

    Looks great.
    When you said you were gonna stitch it together I thought "That's a lotta holes". To drill and to stitch.
    I've sewn leather onto steering wheels and I wear Bionic leather motorcycle gloves when doing so (or sew?) to protect my hands from the Dacron. I use waxed Dacron for making bow strings as I always come up short when using the thread they supply with the cover kits. and I can get different colors if I wish.

      @ThirdCoastCraftsman  6 лет назад

      yes, it was way more than i had expected haha! Ill have to check that dacron stuff out. Thanks!

      if what you used was called "artificial sinew" it was likely a Dacron or generic polyester version. To make bow strings, it is colored, waxed, and sold by the 1/4 to 1 pound spool or so. You can also get stronger lines for it too, "Fast Flight" or Dyneema. are ultra strong stuff. I got mine, long ago when I made bows, from here: www.3riversarchery.com/buy/bows/string-building/bow-string-material

    Incredible! Such beautiful work.
    How do you keep thin material like those covers from cupping?

    • @ThirdCoastCraftsman
      @ThirdCoastCraftsman  6 лет назад

      I didnt haha. the bottom stayed flat but the top cupped some after I carved it. not a huge deal though. you can help avoid it but making sure at alternate the grain direction on the individual strips.
