"I found some really interesting unique pieces of wood" is a great way of saying "I found a perfect use for the garbage wood the lumber yard couldn't sell." Beautiful work as always, Chris!
Exactly. Gotta find the beauty in everything. Which is what i remind myself about you all the time 😂 much love brother. Oh by the way woodprix made your outfeed table better ZIIIIIINNNGGGGG!!!!
YouCanMakeThisToo I am a 17 year old and just starting to get into wood working. How can I find peicies of wood like the ones that he used in the video. Do I ask for them at a lumber yard?
That's a good way, and there's a fair chance they have a scrap or cut off bin full of stuff like that.
YouCanMakeThisToo Awesome, thank you.
Find a local saw mill. Often a guy with a Woodmizer or other one man operation. We have tons of cut offs from the saw mill that are live edge, figured, wood, and wood with with character that are cut offs and gets thrown away. You can often get this stuff for free. Keep in mind you will have to dry this wood but with a little research you will can easily do this at home.
The textured epoxy is absolutely killer! Really makes the river look much more 'alive' and less static.
Thanks so much Paul. I thought it was really cool how the epoxy “worked” similar to wood where I could actually push a gouge through it. I wonder if it would good on a larger piece like a coffee table
maybe add some color too nice work
If it had some blue dye it might even look like water or a river!
This combines two of my favorite things- woodworking and fly fishing! Love it, and love the fact you used mostly hand tools- just fits with the theme.
IF THIS ISN’T ART THEN I DONT KNOW WHAT IS !!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Haha thanks so much Ben. I really appreciate the love man!
So nice! I really like the scalloped epoxy texture. Very cool effect. Might have to try that
Wm. Walker Co. I'm 100% with you on that one...i was going to comment the same thing.
I like them best as well. Make the epoxy look like water with these ripples is a great finish for a flybox
I suppose I’ll allow you to try. After all I did steal your lighting advice for some of those shots with the gouge haha ✊
The walnut half and half with scalloped epoxy definitely the best. Although the one with the scalloped epoxy running down the centre probably most resembles the river that you're fishing on. Don't know if that's what you were going for, but it worked nevertheless!
Nice, you said instead of the board you would use tape, what kind of tape? To avoid sticking
Loved the peened copper rivet, the texturing and the lived edged epoxy. The essence of fly fishing style.
The textured box that was on the resin only I thought was interesting, like running water. Beautiful work, great video!
He needs no machines because he is the "Machine"! Awesome video skills and craftsmanship! Thanks
i'm not sure what was more impressive, making the boxes or making the flies.
Haha. Both have definitely taken some practice 😁
Both are definitely an art. i enjoy woodworking and the only fly fishing we do around here is chasing files around w/ flyswatters.
😁😁
I agree, just awesome.
@@ThirdCoastCraftsman I know this is 2 years later. But I love tying flies and fly fishing and I'm a fellow michigander. Would you mind telling me what you call the fly you tied?
Wow. Your woodworking is artistry but the flies take the cake. There’s a universe in those flies. Truly beautiful.
These look amazing! Definitely the top with the texture just in the epoxy. It makes it look like a windy day on the water!
You’re right, I wasn’t even thinking that when doing it but I totally see that now
This is the most underrated woodworking RUclips videos ever. Such great content, especially with the fly-making and fish-catching thrown in. So cool
I really like them all! I think some color (blue, turquoise, aqua, etc) to the epoxy is the only thing I'd change, and that's just a preference thing... They are all very nice!!
Thank you sir! And I agree some color would
Look awesome!
Well done young man! Bravo! Wood Working, Fly Tieing, Fishing, not sure life gets better than that...
My favorites are the highly figured wood with the textured epoxy. Very complimentary. Outstanding work! 👏👏👏
I’m right there with ya!
I cannot fathom how someone could “dislike” this video, or any video put out by Third Coast Craftsman. This is 1st Class craftsmanship through and through. Always psyched to see a new video from this channel. “Well done” is an understatement. Thank you for your work brotha 🤙🏽
Thanks so much bud
M speechless Chris. Your work is becomin exquisite. Amazing technique n clean neat work.
Thank you so much for the great comment! I appreciate the love and support
Gorgeous work!-- both box and flies. And a gorgeous fish, too. But don't let too many people know what a great state we have.
Dude those are bad ass. I like them all in there own way. Beautiful job
Thanks bud. They definitely are cool in their own way
These boxes are so cool! The live edge with textured epoxy adds so much, and now I have a million ideas for something similar, yet different. :) Loved watching you tie the fly- it's been forever since I watched someone do that, great memories
Beautiful work, very creative as always. I like that you don’t settle and try different ideas or improvements as in using texture. Check out Iwasaki files from most any site ie, Highland, Woodcraft, Lee Valley etc. Try some you’ll keep them close at hand,,,,instead of reaching for sandpaper or plane, the extra fine are just as aggressive as the fine or medium and leave a glass finish, hardly reach for a medium. Tell Utz to quit talking so much.!
Thanks so much. Actually you you look close I am using a Iwasaki file when I’m working on smoothing out my feet saw cuts for the box body. I totally agree with you. Those are SWEET!!!
Gosh!!! I’d be hard pressed to choose one over another as they were all beautiful. Great job. Man you’ve got talent
Amazing job Chris. You are so talented son...not only woodworking but fly making and fishing!! What’s next!!! Did you learn to make flies from your granddad? I do like the one you did the extra embellishments on. The copper tubing is a great touch too. Overall a great build for all of the boxes and the video was well edited too. Be safe son.
Thanks so much Becky. I’m glad you liked the video! No I learned fly tying and fishing all by myself 😁
Third Coast Craftsman Your very good at it son.
I woke up this morning with an idea for river boxes and then I found your channel... Again lol. I love the gouged detailed ones. Such fantastic attention to detail, very inspiring thank you. I don't fish but I love trout.
Nice job
Woodworking, fly tying, fishing all in one video, heck yeah. Those are all awesome, the textured river one is my favorite.
Haha doesn’t get much better than that. I hit the trifecta ✊
The epoxy texture that looks like rippling water is stunning.
You have the most beautiful flies box of the world !!!!
Congretulation of France.
Love the textured epoxy - looks like ripples on the water! Very appropriate! 👏🏻👏🏻
Just beautiful inside and out. Attention to detail is phenomenal. Much applause.
The texture on the resin for sure looks like ripples in water, and the copper rivet on any of them. Nice work!
Thanks bud! The ripple effect was kind of a cool accident. I didn’t even think about that at first 😁
I think the textured one add something totally new to the epoxy game. Those are all awesome.
tying that fly at the end was the best surprise of the video. excellent work
I cant believe I haven't seen this video before. You amaze me with nearly every project you build
Wow! As a fly fisherman who ties my own flies and an aspiring wood worker, just wow! Very impressive boxes AND flies.
You can't expect someone to pick a favourite out of a bunch of beauties like that. They're all gorgeous.
I know it’s definitely hard
All are awesome and I don't think I could pick one over the other. Any flyfisher would be proud to have one.
All of the boxes are beutiful, but if I had to choose, I think the ones where you have done the texture look amazing and the one where you have just done the texture on the river part make it look like a river in motion. Your flies are also a work of art! Thank you for sharing these amazing skills 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much for the kind glen! I’m glad you liked the video and flies 😁
Love these fly boxes, so much better than the plastic ones, what a great job
My favorite is the textured resin and smooth wood. Makes it look like water coming up to a shore, absolutely perfect for this project.
So true. Thanks brother!
These are outstanding. What a great gift for a sportsman.
I’m the guy that typically lurks RUclips and never subscribes to anyone. I have started a small woodworking business on my days off from the Fire Dept. and poured Epoxy has become my best seller. These are amazing. “Subbed” as they say.
Thanks so much Doug!
The textured look a lot better than I anticipated. Look like fish scales.... Very appropriate. thanks for the ideas.
For a fly box...the scalloped epoxy makes it look like water, very fitting!
Wow I like the boxes where the wood is smooth and the epoxy is textured
The boxes with texturing on the epoxy are my personal favorite, since it looks like water.
Are you kidding? Which ONE do we like best??? They're all awesome!! Excellent workmanship!
The boxes with the texture on the epoxy portion are great! Very inspiring.
They all look good, but my personal favorites are the ones with the textured resin and the pin. That fly also looked amazing. I love fly fishing, but have never gotten into that making my own.
Thanks so much Donald. And tying flys is a very expensive rabbit hole haha. I should have just stuck to buying them already tied haha
Third Coast Craftsman trust me, I know all about expensive rabbit holes. I fell head first into vintage straight razors. But that is a whole different subject. Thanks for the videos.
Man unreal, what you can do with mostly hand tools is an incredible skills, keep it up!
Thanks Josh! Much appreciated!
The last box shown, further to the left is by far my favorite. Your channel is such an inspiration to get out and create. Thank You!
Thanks so much Joejoe I really appreciate that man
All beautiful boxes. Have to say the textured ones just stand out so much more. Very nice
The textured river is by far my favorite
All the boxes look really nice . 2,3,4,10, and 12 I liked the most.
Oooooo.... I love the textured epoxy with flat wood ones!
Those things are Gorgeous! Works of art every one.
The Walnut textured epoxy is amazing.
Watching your work with the hand tools is very soothing, zen master of the grain!
Great looking boxes and love the fly fishing sequence at the end.
The gauged epoxy mimics the river so perfectly. Really impressive work
Thanks bud! I’m pretty happy with the texturing :)
All gorgeous. I especially like the copper rivet swinging tops.
Wow!! I would buy all and any of those and I don’t even fish! KILLER work man! Always a pleasure to watch you work!
Ha ha thanks Dan I really appreciate the love and support man.
Those are some amazing fly boxes!!! My personal favorite is the textured box.
Beautiful work!!
The ones with the pivot and textured epoxy in the clear section are beautiful. A watch displayed in this type of box would look sweet.
Very good point. I might reach out to a watch company about a project like that. Good idea
Love the textured lids. All the boxes are really nice. I’m sure the people who get the boxes will really like them
Thanks Joe. I really appreciate that 😂
They are all awesome! But love ripple in the epoxy. Perfect touch Chris.
Those look great! I like all of them. The owners will be proud.
some of the most beautiful boxes I have ever seen
Thanks Trever!
Never fly fished but love fishing. These box are epic! Any whoever did win one of these I'm sure were over the top ecstatic.
The boxes were all stunning. I’d buy one for sure.
I loved the copper rivet style and where the epoxy is textured to look like water. The last box you closed in the video. They are fantastic! Perfect father's day gifts, or any time of the year really.
Thanks so much Brock. I really appreciate that man! Too bad I didn’t get these out in time for Father’s Day 😁
I loved the ripple effect you put in the epoxy, made it look like running water
Beautiful hand crafted fly boxes. Well done.
That textured hinged box was absolutely my favorite. Great video and you do great work man.
Thanks so much tim. I really appreciate that 😁
Unreal craftsmanship. You’ve inspired me to try my hand at making a few!
Beautiful work. Love the scalloped effect on the epoxy and the timber left smooth. Too good to take to the field.
At first i didn't like the textured look but then i saw the finished product and looks bloody killer!
Those rivets looked beautiful. Very impressive work.
Beautiful job on all the boxes. They are all works of art.
Beautiful boxes! Proper works of art. Thanks for posting.
the texture makes the epoxy look like a legit river, it's so cool.
I'm particularly partial to simple. For me the boxes with the copper pin hinge and textured lids are simply AMAZING
Thanks matt. I gotta agree with ya! 👍
Echoing the textured epoxy. Absolutely beautiful boxes and your videos always make me get off the couch and get to the garage to build. Thanks for sharing your crafts
That’s so awesome to hear and trust me I need the same motivation a lot of times haha
the textured epoxy is SICK! Love all of them, but it is my favorite. Awesome job on all of these. I think I may have to try it also, you made me catch the BUG.
Wow, all of the boxes are spectacular, but the textured versions really make them look like the surface of water. Nicely done!
Three of my favourite things. Woodwork, fly tying and fly fishing. You sir are a true craftsman. The boxes are beautiful
...I'm new to your channel but, there is obviously no end to your talent and craftsmanship...
Thanks so much Thomas!
So beautiful! The carved epoxy is a really nice feature. These are on the to do list now! 😄💞
Thank you hailey. I’m glad you liked them!
Beautiful fly boxes, the textured river was my favorite one, you do great work, thanks for sharing!
Every piece is beautifully crafted art. Great video my friend.
These all look so good. I really like the epoxy down the middle and the textured look adds some great character. Truthfully though, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these looks. They are beautiful pieces of art but also functional. Keep doing what you do.
Thanks so much, I think all of them have their own unique character.
These are sweet! Really like the box that has the textured epoxy.
I really like the ones with the dimpling. That looks like water. All are amazing!
Counting from the right, my FIL bought me #4...the swivel with the epoxy river in the middle. Just got it for Christmas! What an amazing piece of craftsmanship! Plan on taking it to the driftless area this spring!
My new favorite woodworking channel. Keep the inspiration coming!
Wow! Thank you so much! Very humbled! Hopefully i stay that way :)
Phenomenal work here! This is as true as craftsmanship and creativity come.
I just love the ones that look like a river runs down the middle. So fitting. Perfect!
Thanks Frank. Definitely ties the whole idea together haha
Incredible work....There's something about small projects that are so satisfying. Keep up the great work.
I totally agree. thanks so much for the love and support
Can't say I have a favorite box. They all are very nice. Nice work!
I like the brass "hammer rivet" with swinging tops. Also the textured looks cool, like the wind blowing on the river. Very nice!!!
