That's a GREAT project. Not only the history of the board, but the family can watch this video and see how the "heritage" trees were transformed into a generational keepsake! !! !!!
I am still getting a kick from watching you make these beautiful chess boards. Just amazing how beautiful they turn out to be. That maple is reminiscence of marble.
Wish I could craft fine wok like this. I'm going to look through more of your videos to see if you ever make items from the perspective of those of us that don't have bandsaws and belt sanders. I've got a good table saw, miter saw, planer, hand held sander, hand held router, and jig saw. My shop has no room for joiner, belt sander, or bandsaw unfortunately. This the first video I've watched and I will be looking at more of your work. Keep up the great work and content.
The spalted maple really stands out. I was surprised that the walnut rotted so much in just a few years. I guess the insect damage had been working on the interior of the log for a lot longer. Beautiful board even with the challenging material.
ALL of yours boards are beautiful but I especially love the use of Spalted Maple for the light colored squares and border strip. I have a shed with 15 year old dried Walnut and some Maple that my neighbor and I milled from storm damaged trees; this would be an excellent project.. Thanks for the inspiration.
A method that I’ve found really helpful. Quarter the fresh logs and let them dry in quarters before milling them up. You get smaller widths, but they are all quarter or rift sawn and doing it this way minimizes checking.
I enjoy watching all of your "Wood You Make It" videos. This one especially, as the sentimental value makes this piece priceless. I look forward to seeing more of your creative creations :)
I always enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing what is coming out next. So this one, wow, what a unique approach to start with the log. So enlightening. Especially love the sentimental value of the wood. I find that to be the most rewarding when you know your project will be cherished for some time. Love it. Great job, Mike!
Just saw the video of you four years ago making a similar looking chessboard. I would love to have a professional chessboard like this so I would be so damn glad having such a wonderful art of handwork for my future chessgames instead of cardboard which I use now because of financial reasons. Would definitely be a generation overloving chessboard in my family and I would hold it in honor. Thank you for the nice video and keep up the awesome work!
Awesome give away opportunity. Love your builds been watching for years... Just getting enough confidence to tackle my own chessboard... I dont have a thicknesser and thats been holding me back... I did just get a Festool RO 125, and think I can do a good enough job to attempt it. Thanks for the inspiration!
LOVED the piece the spalted maple did wonders to change what would be a blander area. I never dreamed of using a core of plywood I bet it does prevent warping.
Hey there @HeathenHammer123, thanks for your comment and for participating in the give-away contest. I'm happy to let you know that you won the TopTes moisture meter. I'll release a video tomorrow and will announce it there. Just send me at an email to woodumakeit@gmail.com using the email account associated with your RUclips account and provide me with the shipping details and I'll send it off. Congrats!!
Thanks for sharing your skill on these videos. The history and milling of the logs was so interesting and will make this a priceless piece of craftsmanship for this family. Love how the Spalted Maple turned out.
I just made my first chess board and am excited to make more. Yours are amazing and watching the steps and your skill is mesmerizing. I’m going to have to improve my skills a ton, lol.
This was a very timely video for me. I just built a new house in the forest. I had the contractor leave the logs of the trees that were taken down for the house. I have quite a large pile of 10 foot logs of mostly chestnut oak, some ash, some white pine and perhaps a sycamore. They have been down for perhaps 16 months, and I was thinking its about time to do something about getting the lumber out of them. I think I will use your technique on at least one of the smaller logs, and have a saw miller come in and do the rest.
I have watched most of your videos. I will now like and subscribe and hopefully one day be able to afford one of your signature Master, craftsmanship chess boards. I really liked your table chess video. And the SalesX one was totally awesome! Praying 🙏 the random generator picks me.
Using some kind of a tenon would be much more important if the frame was not glued to the plywood tongue. I've used tenons in the past, but In my opinion, the plywood tongue gives the mitered corners sufficient strength.
As much as I enjoy your videos, I find myself falling asleep or getting sleepy from how relaxing it is to watch you work 😂
My daughter falls asleep watching your videos with me. I absolutely love your channel, and I am SOOO jealous of your bandsaw 😍
That's a GREAT project. Not only the history of the board, but the family can watch this video and see how the "heritage" trees were transformed into a generational keepsake! !! !!!
Beautiful
Thanks. Great video!

Really nice work, the spalted maple gave an extra touch.

Very nice chess board. I will definitely make this in my schools woodworking club.
Beautiful piece. The spalted maple is awesome. It's always fun when the value of what you make extends beyond its intended function .
Just amazing as usual, congratulations!
Your work is my company since I've found my way back to the chess world.

Great project Mike! I love how these “imperfect” woods turned out.

My son and I will be building a board based on your work. Keep up the great work
Beautiful work! I especially love that the wood came from trees the client's grandma planted -- I couldn't think of a better use for the wood.
As always, a joy to watch.
loving your videos. I'm preparing to make my first chessboard in a couple of weeks and your videos have really been helpful.
Amazing work, Mike! Really stunning piece! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I really like that the wood has a sentimental value. What a beautiful heirloom to pass down ❤
As always, your work is astounding! Being a chess enthusiast myself, these videos are always a joy to watch.

Thanks for the video, nice to see your process. Lately all the wood I’ve tried milling on my sawmill has the bug problem also.
I always enjoy your chess board videos. Great video work as well.
Love your videos. Helped me build my first chess board.
Beautiful. It truly is amazing, when milling logs, how quickly one goes from seemingly too much wood, down to not enough…
love the spalting
This is my favorite chess board from all the others you have made. A very unique way to keep the memory of a family member.

Nothing like spalted wood, great work Mike.
Fantasic work! I've been working with spalted maple recently as well.
Beautiful chessboard, ... it always continues like this
Beautiful! I think that these spalted maple inlays are my favorite so far. And as always, a pleasure to watch.
The spalted maple looks amazing. I might have to try something similar in my next board. Thanks for sharing!
Such a beautiful project! Impressive what masterpiece you made out of this challenge. Lots of character in the grain. Your Client will love it! 👍
An amazing dedication to the owners family. Congrats sir on another fine build.
Wish I had all those tools. Very nice job
You make the best chessboards I have ever seen. I strive to that level.
I love the spalted maple. It made for a very beautiful board. As always your boards are spectacular.
I love watching your process and the finished results, too. This one with the sparring turned out particularly striking. Bravo! 🙌🏻

I'm a big fan of spalted wood. But I'm not a fan of it in this project. It is a beautiful piece.
This board is so beautiful!
Beautiful work as always
I love watching your skills. I made my first chess board after being inspired by you.
Beautiful board
I love your editing.
Excellent job thanks for sharing. Love the spalted maple.

Yes! UPS is delivering my silver plaque from RUclips on Thursday. Exciting!!
🙌👏
Very nice work as always!
Beautiful work, your pieces always have an attention to detail that is inspiring!
Great to see from the start milling the logs down how long did it take over-all
Love your work! I'm going to make one soon!

That was a lot of tree for one chess board! Beautiful.
Definitely, but I still have a lot of leftover scraps to make the chess pieces. That's going to be tedious, but it might make an interesting video.
That would make an interesting video.
Woodworking at its best.
Beautiful work.

I really liked your table chess video.
And the SalesX one was totally awesome!

Love the process.
Really enjoy your videos you have taught me a lot threw the yrs…I was also surprised you didn’t use dowels or dominoes on your miters. 😮
Using some kind of a tenon would be much more important if the frame was not glued to the plywood tongue. I've used tenons in the past, but In my opinion, the plywood tongue gives the mitered corners sufficient strength.
looks great. going to start one tomorrow. 👍
