    Well actually Jonny, this is my first of your projects. It's not my style but why should you care! You made something with machines but you put your soul into it and made it human, huge respect for that. I'm a pretty traditional wooden boatbuilder that cut my teeth with complex shapes achieved with hand tools and usually turn my nose up at woodworkers that rely too heavily on machines and CAD who make lifeless pieces, but there was something different about this. It's the first time I've seen something like it. Whatever you charge for this it's worth every penny, I see the effort and expense you go for perfection because I am the same. I love to see good problem solving, that's all we really do at the end of the day. I see you're going to go far on your journey and I'm here for it. Nice work

    This beautifully carved, black-walnut record cabinet with a continuous-grained, tambor door made from a slab is breathtaking. But in the well-produced video and narration documenting the clever build, the genius woodworker and philosopher also shares his personal path to craftsmanship: “pursue progress not perfection.” And then “wing it.” Good advice for all artists. I had a brief stint in custom commercial woodworking back in 2007. I worked in a one man workshop with me being that one man's assistant. He was an accomplished 50-year+ master woodworker who'd been building cabinetry, tables, chairs, etc, since he was 12, while I was the 36 year old nube who tried his patience daily. I "helped" him do a small $95K kitchen in Santa Barbara, CA, and an over $600K whole home (kitchen, library, bathrooms, closets, master bedroom) in the SF North Bay. We'd build and install unfinished, and then the pieces would be later stained in place. I once asked him what makes a professional woodworker, and he replied, "When you, by yourself, can fix any mistake that you make, and nobody would ever know because the fix is invisible." The GFC ended my woodworking career opportunity and sent me in another direction, but I really miss it.

    You will probably never see this comment, but an old woodworkers/construction finishing trick my dad taught me was to mix some saw dust of the wood you're working with, with wood glue to make a paste to fill those "oops" holes and gouges. Once dry, sanded, and sealed, you'd never know it was there.

    • @JohnDlugosz
      @JohnDlugosz 9 месяцев назад +20

      In my experience, they show up again when finished, because the glue doesn't take the finish in the same way as the natural wood.

      @@JohnDlugoszStraight 🤡 reply...
      Let ask you something... What do you think is the *entire point* of using _sawdust_ from the same wood? 🤔
      If it stood out _so much_ as to negate the use of this *very common* method used by woodworkers; that means it was a _skill issue_ and *you* used way too much glue to sawdust ratio in your filler 💯
      Also, seeing as this method is used for filling gaps/cracks that are _way too small_ for an inlaid patch of new wood and the wax filler pens on the market don't finish the same as wood _either..._ What would you offer as a better alternative? 🤔
      RUclips comments are absolutely infested with 🤡's who are quick to critique or tell others how "they are wrong" without adding anything *actually useful* to discussion themselves 💯

    That story about the coach getting Pythagorean wrong reminded me of a guy from our church who often got words wrong, or just used a wrong word. For example, when the kids were going to do a skit that needed a narrator, he kept saying "narranator". Like in the coach story, everybody knew what he meant so just went with it. The time he made it hard to just go with it was when we were loading up gear to take up to the local park for our annual Christmas carols event. We had a lightweight lectern that hadn't been loaded yet, and the guy called out "what are we doing with this rectum?" I said, "Sorry, what?" and he said "The rectum. Are we taking the rectum with us?" Our poor pastor was within earshot but out of view and almost collapsed in silent laughter. After the event, we put a nice clear label on it that said "LECTERN".

    I love your videos! If you ever run into that problem again when making a sliding door, you can cut out the back corner to slide in the wood door. The back corner would allow for the wood to bend in the same shape of corner so you can utilize the bend in the board. Hopefully that makes sense. Awesome build!!

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays 10 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, that was my thought too - cut it so it only has to bend in the way that it can bend! That would make the cut slightly less hidden, but given he ended up having to cut half the back anyway, it would probably still be better!

    I almost hate to throw this at you, but if you would have made two slots on the curve of the cabinet aligned with the slot on the long plane, the doors would have slide in straight into the channel. Make inserts to fill the slots that screwed back in so that they can be taken off to replace tambor doors, heaven forbid they ever get damaged. Hope that made sense. Enjoyed the watch.

    Lovely video. I think the cabinet would look great with some ornate silver handles. But it is so mesmerizing as it is.

    Absolute amazing! This cabinet is a thing of beauty! So impressed! And, well actually, bourbon is whiskey, just different from Canadian, Scotch, Irish, straight and blended whiskeys 😊

    I have neither the patience, or the motivation, to do anything like this. But I find videos of these projects soothing.

    I'm not a fan of all the epoxy and CNC building in woodworking that I normally see. I use lots of machines, but I'm pretty proficient with hand tools and use lots of them too. I do a lot of projects with gouges to carve and texture work. (Benches, frames, beds, cabinets). Yeah, your use of the planes and chisels will get better as you progress, but you DO have a decent eye for the project and while I might not have designed this identically, you did make a very appealing design. I like to think about design in making the attempt to make something that someone will still appreciate my designs 100 or more years from now. Part of that of course makes me want to do more hand work, as with modern CAD and CNC, anything done can easily be done or improved on in the future by someone else. Hand carving and texturing is much more unique. This project of yours is certainly one of the better projects using CNC that I've seen. Congratulations. This is the first video I've watched of yours. (The Tambour doors caught my attention and I clicked on it). (You DO need another machine though also! At the level you are doing stuff now, you need a widebelt sander. Yeah, expensive, but you can get a 16" open ended one that isn't bad, less than $8K, and will change the volume of production you can do considerably)

    This project reminds me of a wavy 3d cabinet this young man did by hand in his garage a few years ago. I'm sure the video is still somewhere on the youtube. You too did nice work! I'm just curious if the fabric ended up being stained and with hanging threads as was visible after you put the rubio coat on the wood?

    impressive & beautiful, an amazing creation. The waves, the ocean are there ! [ to play the drum, in my native French : "jouer du tambour" (French and English share half of their words, but sometimes the meaning is different, not here). ]
