I had been wondering the entire time why the client would want to select the music which played during your build. Then I realized: He was making memories for his grandson, Max, to remember him by. He'll realize one day what a great gift it is to have such a thoughtful granddad.
The music initially requested by the client was a few tracks from Billy Idol's self-titled debut album that was released in 1982. The craftsman could not locate his copy of Billy Idol "Billy Idol" so there was no White Wedding, Hot In The City, or Dancing With Myself playing behind this wonderful video. Fortunately, the client's second choice, Vivaldi - Four Seasons, was easy to locate and meld into this video.
I’m a sucker for watching any craftsman work. I’m especially fascinated by woodworking. I’m an old school chess player. I thrive on beautiful music. And you narrate so beautifully. So, it was a 40 minutes amazingly spent. Thank you good sir.
I am really impressed with this chessboard build. Now I want to try to build one for my son who has stood by me going through cancer treatments multiple times in the last 22 years. This chessboard is special. Thanks
AS a chess player i can only say that board is stunning and i would love to have one like it......but even more enjoyable was seeing grandfather and grandson...bonding over a game and enjoying the life changing moments in that home and what it all represents....great video!
We would all be lucky if each of us possessed one skill to the degree that Mike here has for his craft. That board and pieces combo is what most chess players dream of
Currently deployed and got really into chess while im in the desert. Going down the rabit hole and came to this. Beautiful handywork! What a masterpiece.
I totally enjoyed your video. Being a woodworker myself, I was amazed at your talent and drooled over a few of your tools. This video was reminiscent of a time when my dad (who passed away 5 years ago) made a chess board for himself and another for his father when I was just a child myself. One board was a present for my grandfather on his 62nd birthday. That board has now passed on to me and will pass on to my son at some point in the future. You have created a chessboard that will be handed down for generations as well and treasured through the ages! Job well done!
Really shows the meticulous labor that goes into a work of art! That was quite a journey with the majestic orchestra in the background, your skill and your amazing work shop! Thank you for that!
Simply a "Masterpiece"! This video made me meditate on the capacity of human beings to go beyond their creative limits, in addition to bringing together one of the greatest legacies that God left humanity; the music! My most sincere congratulations from Brazil!
I never thought I would sit through an entire video like that, but I was thoroughly entertained. Your craftmanship is exceptional. Watching them play with the board you created for them was the chef's kiss. Great work.
I waited for the polish of the Birdseye Maple. Maple truly is one of the most beautiful wood, once polished. From baseball bats to chess boards. Nice master piece.
The fact that you had Vivaldi the four seasons in the back round brought the video to another level of greatness, and the chess board is to put it perfectly is "beautifully elegant."
Awesome simply awesome. As a fellow woodworker I have to say i am inspired and I would for sure make this in honor of the impeccable quality and love you put into this board!
excellent video explaining how to make a beautiful Chess board the fact that you did not fast forward you did it in real time video and that is quality video Good Job!!!
I love the longer videos. I know they must be hell to edit and quality check but I love to sit back for an hour or so and enjoy your videos while I have dinner or something like that
Yep, best chess board I've seen. Would love to see you have a go at making the pieces! Apparently there's only 10 people in the world who are capable of carving the Staunton chess sets- the ones that sell for $500.
When i saw that the video was 40min i said no way i am watching all of that. and here i am at the end of the video and i wish it was longer... AWESOME BOARD AND AWESOME SKILLS! And nice voice to go with it :)
Such care, precision and craftsmanship. Vivaldi added so much to the video. I aspire to make a chess board for my son. This video provides great insight into the process. Thanks
This is absolutely stunning and your craftsmanship is superb. Thank you so much for walking through this. I learned a ton and hope to carry many of these lessons to my work.
Stunning! I'm entering the the cnc woodworking and in my research and studying this popped up and I became mesmerized. You hit on so many different aspects with a quality edit job of procedures. Wonderful presentation. Part of me wonders what if, using the cnc, creating those initials with the birdseye as inlays ~ MMMMM.... but still, beautiful woods. And cool to see the most wonderful go-to lacquer. Its so amazing to work with when you get everything right, yet lets you recover if you have to back track. I think epoxy's give you great durability, but lacquer gives a beauty you can't beat. And finally, I loved the music and thank you for making the video last for the entire arrangement. Quite fitting
Holy smoke...wow...and this video did not even show the making of the pieces...very nice.i do hope Max will understand the amount of time and love that went into this airloom...
Hi I would certainly have a go at it. I have always wanted to make one. I loved the way you filmed it in real time. The music also added to the experience. Thanks for sharing your work with us. 👍merry Christmas.
Excellent work! Glad the algorithm showed brought me to your channel. Grabbed some rosewood last week with the same intentions. I had intended to use only solid wood, but your plywood core technique has me second guessing that. Blessings from NC!
Beautiful work! I have always wanted a custom chess board (and set) that could be passed down for generations! It looks like that is exactly what you did here! Bravo!
Others have taken care of all the compliments your technique and finished product deserves (significant). I will simply add that you did an *excellent* job editing the video against the Four Seasons. It is a fun twist that you nailed perfectly.
As someone that hasn't tried an end grain chess board yet, I can appreciate those videos, however, I love seeing this, it's giving me some great ideas for my next face grain chess board! Thanks so much! I definitely wood make it.
You made this chess board for my dad! It's beautiful ❤️
It was a pleasure making it for him. He was great to work with. I hope he and Max get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
@@Woodumakeit I want one please it's just so beautiful 🥺
Thanks for the Vivaldi. I played Summer and Spring.

I love the whole video but the end with your client playing chess with his grandson is the best part of the whole thing
Totally agree! I was excited to release the video for that reason. I'm so glad that Ray offered to send me the photos and video clips.
I can see the grandson playing chess with _his_ grandson, decades from now, and the board will probably still be in great shape as a family heirloom!
All of the chess pieces looked kinda black though so would be confusing lol
@@alexsampson2630 true that
best part was when the old man hung his queen hahahaha
What a beautiful 40 minute slice of life
A Chess Board that will forever be treasured by the Grandson and passed down for Generations. Well done🤝
The grandson's boyfriend is going to smash the board in a fit of rage during an argument in the summer of 2073. ☹️

I’m enjoying 3 things at once: chess, woodworking and music. Thank you!
I liked the content but not the music. It would have been better without it.

That Maple and Rosewood is a wonderful combination. Especially the Maple comes alive with the finish.

A great compendium of things , Vivaldi's finest work and the Best chess board film on RUclips 🙂
We would all be lucky if each of us possessed one skill to the degree that Mike here has for his craft. That board and pieces combo is what most chess players dream of
we all do we just dont dedicate ourselves to one craft too many of us try to do too much instead of picking one skill
I never thought i would watch a 40 minute video of somebody making a chessboard…
Twice ;)
Whoever this guy is who recommended Vivaldi and the classic chessboard look has my respect. What a top guy! Loved it
