Feliz Año Eduardo...
Happy Pre-New Years~! From South Korea
Wow these were really great recommendations thanks!
Love you, guy
Really interesting view into your psyche, I'm glad your opinion on Kapital is the same as mine, it is "really fucking long!". Some cool looking titles in there, I'll check some of them out. Surprised you didn't mention your own book though :p
I've been reading Stoic philosophy this year and I've found it very rewarding. Epictetus, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius. Great stuff!
James Kelly oh I need to get into the stoics soon. The little I know about Epictetus looks really interesting.
Epictetus wrote a book called "The Handbook" and it's literally a handbook for living. Great positive mental health type stuff.
Thank you.
Hey Ed. I always wandered how do you read such ''heavy'' books like Hegel's or where and how do you begin with philosophy? I'm really confused! Thank you for the great content and keep up with the good work mate!
Bozhura Stefanova I've been reading philosophy for years. The best place to start are the classics:Aristotle and Plato. But it all depends on what keeps you interested. Maybe you could start by reading Baudrillard?
I haven't heard of Baudrillard. But I find greek philosophers also very challangeing. The overall knowledge that I have is limited by the lack of better understanding of the matter. It's so hard to focus on something that is pretty much abstract for my mind. Maybe I'll try and find a new aproach. Thank you su much for your answer!
Hola, Ed.
Just saw this, and I have to say the philosophy texts on your bookshelves are one of my favorite parts of your videos. I have that same copy of the Critique of Pure Reason.
If you haven't read Pinkard and Pippin's guide to the Phenomenology I highly recommend them. Pippin's "Hegel's Idealism: The Satisfactions of Self Consciousness" and a great lecturer are the only reasons I have any understanding of the text.
Sorry for nerding out but you don't find Hegel fans very often, especially with a love of photography too.
philip_q duuude! I was hoping to find one. That's why I keep placing the Phenomenology on my videos. Haha
I haven't read Pinkard aside from his "Hegel" book. I'm usually not a big fan of English speaking philosophers' interpretations of Hegel (for example: Houlgate is really interesting, but I keep feeling he misses many important points, specially in the Science of Logic, by reading it in a modern way -scientifically modern, I mean). But that doesn't mean there aren't pretty cool bits and pieces to grab from each author and make your own map. I enjoy Hegel scholars a lot.
I'll check Pinkard's book. If you can get your hands on anything by Carlos Perez Soto (I don't know if there are any English translations... I hope there are) please give it a go. Best Hegel scholar alive, to me.
I love it, subtle signs to reach out. Sorry I can't talk Deleuze too.
I was pretty disappointed by people like Charles Taylor and Robert Solomon's interpretations of Hegel. I thought Pippin and Pinkard did an amazing job of naturalizing their interpretations of Hegel, and really clarified the concept of spirit as communal, discursive search for an authoritative worldview. They might have naturalized Hegel too much, but to me that feels like the best way forward for Hegelianism. I have to confess I haven't even tried reading the Logic yet. We did the Phenomenology and the Philosophy of Right in my seminar. Is the Logic worth it? It kind of scares me.
I'm really curious now to read some non-english Hegel scholarship. We only read American interpretations in that class, except for articles. Unfortunately Carlos Perez Soto's Sobre Hegel hasn't been translated yet. I'll try to find another work by him, I feel bad for not touching Hegel since I graduated.
Great video! What are some books you'd recommend for beginners trying to get serious into philosophy? :-)
It depends on what have you read before and the kind of philosophy you are interested in. philosophy is just like music or painting... there are so many styles and currents! if you have not read Aristotle or Plato, that's a good place to start!
Now do one for photography books.
You brought up "Tame Words..." as being a interesting older view on anarchism but not amazing. Do you have any stronger recommendations for the subject as currently my only education on it is through word of mouth. Also any favourite political books if possible.
Lucas Swift my two big favorite anarchist books: "fragments of an anarchist anthropology" is a GREAT book. Simple, direct and tackles with the most common missconceptions about anarchism. The second is a classic: "Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution" by Kropotkin. Lovely account for the real darwinian evolution and how anarchism makes sense from a biological point of view.
Sounds great, I'll make those next on my read list. Definely looking forward to learning more about the philosophy. Thankyou!!
Eduardo I've seen on the shelves of your room the book "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg so what do you think of it? Did you like it?
I read it about 15 years ago and I loved it back then. Now I think it's good, but not as impressive or groundbreaking as it seemed in those days.
Hola Ed, podrias hacer un video como este para 2019?
Haré lo posible! he leído demasiado haha
Did you buy a copy of Alice in Wonderland after watching the Westworld episode? Because I wanted to, but couldn't find a nice old copy yet. Best regards from Berlin.
I have no idea what Westworld is! I got a copy after started reading again "Logic of Sense" by Deleuze. :D
Haha mate and I was already typing a comment like "No Karl Marx this year?" until I saw the Kapital :)
All the best for 2017 mate! Keep it up!
I really want to know whats wrong with Satre
wei kan sartre is cool. that book is not. I answered why to another comment in here about the reasons why. ;)
Ed!
Brian!
oh no, lees más bien poco... lol, aún así tus constantes referencias a Hegel son bastante impresionantes
Por fa, habla más de literatura y dramaturgia en español. Un abrazo
Hello, great video ! Do you have a goodreads ?
yes, though I forget about it and then I add all the books I've read in the meantime!

thank you ! and excellent job like always :))
You didn't get anything out of Being and Nothingness?
I hated it and didn't finish it. I like Sartre as a writer, but in here he is way out of his depth. he pretends to be opening fields and discovering new things and tries to impress the reader by writing in a pompous manner about how amazing he is by "going beyond idealism"... but it was so obvious to me (and I looked it up and I was right) that, by the time he published this book, he had never opened the "Science of Logic" by Hegel. so it's really cringeworthy to read him using A LOT of words to explain the most simple logical movements, when Hegel tackles the problem of "Being and Nothing" in the very first chapter of the "Science of Logic", and resolves it in a clean and systematic manner. :(
Na Na Got nothing out of it?
