    Everyone these days assumes everything is a preset or an effect or a plugin or an automated action they can run. As a photography hobbyist who started out on film and as a professional graphic designer I am CONSTANTLY seeing this same thing everywhere online in countless creative industries. "What preset did you use?" "What plugin do I need to achieve this text effect?" " Where did you download the action to create that pattern on your poster design?" I think my favorite is " How do I achieve this hand drawn look" referencing an actual drawing done by hand... assuming there is just some photoshop button that will draw for them...
    People don't actually want to be craftsmen, they just want the glory of the final product. When I was starting out in my creative path, any works I admired I automatically assumed were created through manual processes. Most people seem to do the opposite today and automatically assume the work was created with some quick filter, a premade photoshop action, or a lightroom preset. It seems most people view LIghtroom as a microwave; go out, thoughtlessly snap some shots, then go home and pop them in the microwave and BANG, instant masterpiece.
    Lightroom presets should be used like soup stock; a baseline to start from, not a final effect. I have several presets that I've created simply to help automate the 4-5 steps I almost always make for certain photos. I have a "Sunny Day Black And White" preset, a "Late Evening Black And White" preset, a "Nighttime Black And White" preset, a "Muted Color" preset and a few others. I use these essentially just to make minor corrections to my camera's decisions. When shooting BW images on a sunny day I always shoot a tiny bit underexposed to save detail in hightlights and then I will pull some details back out of the shadows in post processing. My "Sunny Day Black And White" preset bumps the exposure a tiny bit, reduces highlights a tiny bit, bumps the clarity a notch, desaturates and drops the blacks -10. This is not a final image, this simply creates a baseline of balanced tones and contrast based on how I shoot on sunny days. This is not a 1-button masterpiece, this is simply a place to start.

    I certainly understand what you're saying. However, I do use presets (VSCO Film specifically). Why? Simple - I love the look, can't afford to shoot film and even less afford to analyze how every film stock works. At the same time though, I know what the presets do in the software but they do exactly what I want in a faster way and to me it really doesn't matter. I'd rather put the time in when shooting.

      I totally agree with you. Sometimes the preset is better than what I would have done or thought of and I may not use it right out of the can and adjust here and there and bam!!!...done!. Why waste so you can say you're a purest?

    I'm a recent subscriber of your channel. Mostly because of my interest in film and Leica cameras. I enjoy your videos. --- I agree with your assessment of not using presets. They are not really professional. Its much better to understand the software. --- Then again I did use them a few times, in fact my most liked image on 500px was colored with a preset. 😑. Keep up the good work. Hope not to many down votes. Ill try and offset it and vote up.

    Hey! I learned critical bit of info from this video. I didn't really think about tweaking RGB channels individually in curves... I can do some awesome stuff with this, thank you!

  • @MrPhotographerDude
    @MrPhotographerDude 7 лет назад

    People bought different films because of how they rendered the pictures, color, contrast, saturation, rich blacks, etc...the look of the film was important to most photographers. They would have a job they were going to do and they would pick the film that was best suited for the job. It's cool you're such a purest, but I think film simulations are a good starting point and yes I know how to use lightroom. If you have a certain look in mind it can be a good jumping off point and there's nothing wrong with it. I agree to just apply presets and call it finished is lame.

  • @edmund1245
    @edmund1245 8 лет назад

    I totally agree with this. For a long time with my c41 negatives I was just inverting the rgb curve and then tweaking contrast exposure etc. However I recently discovered how to tweak each individual channel (red, green and blue) and it delivers much better results and my c41 no longer hasn't strange color cast. It's very rewarding to discover some new technique and put it into practice.

    Good idea, I do something similar but different somehow. I will come back home (from a wedding for example) and then separate the different light sources that i had (natural, flash, yellow light in the reception etc.) and then make what you do of copy the settings. However, if you like a lot the setting is not bad to save it as a preset and use it in the future lie "cool greens, pop up skin". We all should learn how to operate and leave vsco behind! (even some of them are great!)

    Great points about LR and PS. The biggest challenge For me is to keep my scans looking like film. Making a digital shot look like film is hopeless but even scans have their feet in water. My standard is film printed on high quality silver geletain paper because that looks good to me. Now I do use presets, of a sort, in my printing technique it is fair to say but they are within the norm for gel prints. Fast darkroom technique is less time consuming than scan and printing from the desk. Fast darkroom work involves "presets". To pick up on your cooking metaphor: "mis en place- soulement".

  • @myownirvana

    Love it man. Great video. To me, photography is all about manual. Whether that's shooting manual or using LR manually, it's all about creating. Presets are like auto on a digital camera.

    Hola Eduardo, no puedo estar más de acuerdo contigo. Yo no soy profesional, simplemente soy alguien que se divierte haciendo fotos y aprendiendo de ello, pero he invertido mucho tiempo en lo que tú explicas en este vídeo, aprender que es lo que hace, y como lo hace el software. Tengo Presets, sí, pues siempre trabajo con el mismo equipo, y lo más importante, son presets hechos por mí, de tal manera que son muy específicos y controlo en todo momento que es lo que está haciendo el software; sin embargo solo tengo tres. Tengo amigos que son "profesionales" y lo primero que te preguntan es si usas presets y que cuales son, yo me río y les digo que si creen que los presets son los filtros de Instagram. En fin, me encanta tu trabajo y tu filosofía, sigue así. Un saludo.

    I'm with you, man. Learn the craft and learn to use your tools and software for yourself. I am still at the beginning of the learning curve when it comes to these things, and I have actually downloaded a few presets. I found however that I was a bit disappointed in them, and I ended up studying what the presets actually did. What parameters did they change to achieve their intended look. To learn from them in that way, in stead of just using them blindly. I also subscribe to Adobe CC, so I have access to their tutorials on LR. I am in the process of e-learning through that material these days. Keep making awsome videoes! :-)

      yeah, I did pretty much the same: I sat one day with a cup of tea and RUclips and watched a 36 part tutorial on Lightroom, then I reverse engineered a few presets I found online to see if I understood correctly and that was it. :)

    • @snedig123
      @snedig123 7 лет назад +1

      It is possible to learn from anything. Even your mistakes. However, looking back, I would recommend my past self to learn from going through tutorials to learn the software properly, rather than adopting someone else's presets. In addition to Adobes tutorials on their website, they have a channel on youtube. Being partly a Leica shooter, I would also recommend Thorsten von Overgaards tutorials on Lightroom etc. Please don't be snotty and try to pick fights online. Instead, learn the way you choose yourself - and have a good time photographing and editing. Presets can be fun and entertaining as well. I wish you alle the best in your endevaour. :-)

    de hecho creo que hasta cocinando uno no debe seguir las recetas al pie de la letra, un canal muy bueno de cocina ( fudehouse)
    dice algo que desde que lo escuche me pareció una verdad absoluta y que es aplicable en todo " no se trata de recetas perfectas o del paso a paso al cocinar, todo trata del sabor " y creo que en la fotografía es igual, no es sobre los filtros o configuraciones de un programa si no que es sobre el resultado final sea de tu agrado.

    Me gusto la parte que hablas de la visión que tienen hoy en día en cómo se ve el film. Confunden textura con suciedad. Yo personalmente uso presets para partir de alguna base y agilizar más el trabajo, y después hago lo mismo que tú, copio eso al resto de la serie de fotos. Lo mejor de los preset es que puedes revisar bien los valores y perilleos para aprender bien cómo usar LR para obtener los resultados que uno quiere.
    Saludos!

      @edpavez  8 лет назад +1

      Es rara la perspectiva de "se ve como film" ante algo que es evidentemente una ficción digital. Pero funciona así en todos los medios. "Suena como vinilo" es simplemente música con un "ruido base", etc. La pregunta interesante (y que no podemos responder hasta que llegue un nuevo formato) es, ¿cuál será la estética de "la fotografía digital"?

    I don't treat my presets like a "magic button", for me presets = automation. If there are certain things that I usually do to my photos, why do those by hand all the time? Presets are also, imo, a starting point.

    • @edpavez
      @edpavez  6 лет назад

      Sure, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the "I love the look of your pictures, can you make a preset so mines look like yours?" attitude. The idea of not learning how to use the software, just wanting the results. :)

    Why pretend to shoot film when you can just shoot film? Well then don't digitize your film images then. I mean once it's scanned it's digital and it's going to be adjusted digitally and it has a film look. So what's wrong with making digital images that look film like? LOL! Makes zero sense.

    • @edpavez
      @edpavez  7 лет назад +1

      It has nothing to do with the object ("both scanned film and preset digital pictures look like film, lol"), it's the process I'm after: how different is the thinking process between them (they are, after all, different mediums). Cheers.

    What I like about using different presets is trying to understand what they did here and there, and then customizing them and making them my own.

    • @edpavez
      @edpavez  8 лет назад

      yeah, I get the reverse engineering aspect of it... that's cool if 1) you don't know the software and don't want to learn it because you are not a photographer or 2) you are trying to understand how it works without taking the time to watch tutorials.
      but my point is: if it's a software you use every single day, you need to know how to use it and how to produce exactly what you want. if somebody downloads presets and customizes them, but has no idea what do the curves, RGB and color camera settings actually mean and produce, would you say that person knows how to operate the software? and if he doesn't know how to operate the software, would you say that person can actually craft his photographic authorship with such software? my personal answer to both questions is no.

    • @fanboyvshater8744
      @fanboyvshater8744 8 лет назад

      +EduardoPavezGoye I would say that is not a requirement to master the software to be an author. The look of a picture is one the most irrelevant things that make a photographers work stand out as his own.

    • @edpavez
      @edpavez  8 лет назад

      Fanboy vs Hater "authorship" is not the same as "author", it has to do with the craft. that's why the question was "can that person craft his photographic authorship *with such software*?". if that person can't use the software, the answer is no.
      algo processing can be irrelevant for some people, but if that's so, why even bother reverse engineering presets in the first place, unless it's one of the two options I outlined?
      The "I like a certain look but I don't want to waste my time learning the software" is option 2.

    • @fanboyvshater8744
      @fanboyvshater8744 8 лет назад

      +EduardoPavezGoye I see your point. Post processing is not irrelevant, but in the order of things, I don't believe it's the most important aspect of someone's work. So if someone doesn't use a totally original look in his or her photographic work, it doesn't make the person less of an artist. The scenario where that would be troublesome is one where "the look" is proclaimed by the author as an essential part of the value of his work. In the end what I'm trying to say is that you could have amazing work while using a preset. The photographers of old didn't need to be great Darkroom technician to be consider an artist.

    • @edpavez
      @edpavez  8 лет назад

      Fanboy vs Hater nobody has stated otherwise. you are reassuring my point. your position is the number 2 I just outlined.
