FRAN FAN HERE! I'm a photographer/ illustrator looking for a new way to keep sane in this new pandemic world. I've been mulling around the idea of a Zine for a while now but I wasn't sure what my subject would be. Now that I have something, I have no idea how best to accomplish my goal. So glad I found this vid. It's gold, Ed. You guys truly are a treasure!
Hey man, I really like your channel and enjoy your experience so much. I’m a graphic designer from China and would like to share with your why they force you to print 48 pages in total, It because the binding book has to be done with A multiple of 4. Hope you like my comment and very happy to speak with you at some point, cheers!
I'm watching this video with chilean subtitles and I must say it's kinda narcotic experience. The voice and the text... I can't really explain it. It's marvelous.
Ed, what's your favorite focal length? Would love to see a video on this maybe talk about what's your favorite focal length and lenses and when do you use or like to use them for and your sample images and maybe a day with you shooting with that. Thanks!
@MrBusytimmy hahaha believe me, you got the wrong guy to tell this. I'm not obsessed with gears like most people. All my lenses are vintage / cine full manual lenses. I just asked him because I was just curious what's his personal favourite perspective. Just personal taste. Not about the gear so I could buy it or anything. I don't have a gear lust. I've learned to be a minimalist. I don't obsess over latest gears or youtubers. I even consume the internet mindfully. So please take your preaching somewhere else. Thanks.
Very helpful video! I’ve been wanting to make a travel book for my trip to San Francisco and this was so informative. I had to show support by buying both zines, can’t wait to get them in hand 🙏🏽
Me gustó mucho tu video, Ed.
Wow! Thanks Eduardo. Loved the info in this video. Impressed by your work...and I will def make a zine now. Not with photography...but still...Thank you!
I am currently putting together a zine. Still shooting the last final images for it but am at a point where I’m more interested in designing it. So I’m working in Scribus since I can’t afford an Adobe CC at the moment. So we shall see how this goes. 👍🏾😂
I want to thank you and your wife in reminding me to do a spell check. I'm about to print my proof zine tomorrow and there was a spelling error. 35wwwmm camera would look silly no?
Sorry but your tank is not a Paterson-Tank. The tank you are using is so hard to open when your hands are wet. That works much better with a paterson tank. Nevertheless I use the film-holder rolls especially for medium format because of the broad entry for the film. These in combination is my system after several attempts.
aaaahhh .. I love that I just found your channel! I didn't even know you had one. Thank you for this ..it was extremely useful as well as inspiring, as I was looking into creating a zine in the near future. (btw , I love Fran's channel /art ) :)
Really helpful video Ed, thanks! And especially interesting to me, since I work at an online printing company (don’t want to hijack your comments for advertising, but we do the entire process for things like this within 3 working days 😉). About time to use that employee discount!
All right :) So the company is called Drukwerkdeal.nl, and for zines you'll need this category: www.drukwerkdeal.nl/nl/producten/brochures-magazines There you can choose your method of binding: glued ('gelijmd'), stapled (' geniet') and wire-o ('wire-o'). Once you've chosen a binding method, you select your size (' Kies het eindformaat'), your printing method ('Kies de bedrukking'), your paper or material ('Kies het materiaal'), the weight of your paper ('Kies het gewicht', and remember: heavier is thicker), the number of pages including the cover ('Kies het aantal pagina's', anything from 8 to 60), choose your cover ('Kies het cover') and perhaps a fancy finish ('Kies de afwerking'). Next you'll see a table with prices and how many zines you want to print. Prices vary on how quick you want it done. You can order anywhere from 1 to 5000, or even more if you give us a call. You then get an overview of your choices. Check them, add to cart and finish your payment. After that, you can deliver your files. We'll check them automatically and have them delivered to you in a couple of days :) Sorry if this is a bit of a long reply, but I figured you could use some explanation for a Dutch site ;) If anyone has any questions, just ask!
Hello, when you choose pages on Awesome Merch are they double sided inside and one sided on the outer pages? So for example if you choose 24 pages you send 46 pages of pdf?
Love this. I have a question; How true are the black and white images in these books? Reason i am asking is that I saw a friend of mine's zine and they were supposed to be of black and white photos, but each had casts of green. thanks!
Yuuusss!!! I love photography zines and I missed out on your last book! I can't wait to get them in the mail!!! Can you recommend any other photography zines?
Hey, awesome content. Have you ever printed a zine in black ink throughout? I've just finished making a black and white photography zine and I'm not sure if I should print it in black ink or cmyk. Any advice would be much appreciated. ✌🏻
Awesome stuff 👏🏻 I want to ask you one question about Instagram. What do you think about accounts of people which use white frames on all their photos. Is it looks stylish for you?
InDesign is the most correct software for such a job and in fact for such jobs exactly it was created, does not recommend an illustrator And Photoshop is not intended for page booklets, anyone who decides to create such a book is better off working with InDesign which is very simple and easy to work with
Gracias!
Hey Edquardo , thanks for the video. i have been doing the same thing with my pictures ( didgital and film ) using another miduim which is Instagram stories. what do you thinck about that ?
Very informative. Which zine format on Awesome Merchandise did you use, A4 Mono Zine? Shipping to where I live in Bangkok is free but I wonder how long It would take.
I know it's late, but LaTeX would just be a pain for a zine. It is made for rigid and consistent content organization which is awesome for maths reports etc, but will be very limiting for a zine where you are looking for creative arrangement of text and pictures :)
Hello!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Do you mind to tell me how you have recorded sound? Because your camera can not use a microphone, or am I wrong?
I'm sorry, maybe I haven't asked it properly. I mean when Fran talks you are holding a lavalier microphone. As far as I know the Canon M10 doesn't have a microphone input. Are recording audio separately?
Let's say that you're a street photographer or you're photographing a political rally, how much privacy does the subjects in the photo have? Does an individual, whom I photograph, have to sign a release form? Have you ever created a zine that came back to bite you in the rear because someone wants to sue you?
Are you a trust fund kid or something? Selling a lot of books is never a bad thing, even photographers need to eat and pay bills too (and of course those expensive gears). Being popular doesn't mean you're a sell out, it means people actually appreciate your photos and your skill. Also it's a honest job and income.
You didn’t get the idea. The message is: “don’t be alarmed if you don’t sell inmediately”. You need time to build an audience and a steady income. I’m actually saying the same as you, but from the perspective of somebody who is starting and wants instant gratification and fame: it doesn’t work like that.
Easy timestamps for y'all:
00:29 Have a theme
03:05 Shoot, develop, scan
05:53 Organize your files
11:04 Make a PDF
13:12 Send it to print
The black & white xpan subway pages were really good and surprising.
This kind of layout would make a great zine/book on its own.
Ok so date a woman who is a graphic designer. Got it!
YOU CRACKED THE CODE
so, we got it. what a good idea
And make sure your side girl is a printer.
LMFAO!
This is so good. I'm watching it twice, maybe more. This is like the masters class of zine making.

Love your genuine love of what you're doing. Both of you. Thank you and I wish for great things for you two.

Great video. I’m just starting my first zine. This was very helpful. Subscribed to your channel. Great photos. And thanks.
This is done really well. Years of being uninspired, this explained so much
Nice work. Love this type of quality, it is the perfect smart way. Not too excessive luxury with hardcovers. Nah!
Thank you Ed. I am an artist and I watch you and Fran. Love both of you guys. You’re great entertainment and teachers. Be blessed, Mary
Very helpful video! I’ve been wanting to make a travel book for my trip to San Francisco and this was so informative. I had to show support by buying both zines, can’t wait to get them in hand 🙏🏽
Motivación a tope :D

17:23 Wow. You won me over with that statement. That kind of advice is rarely expressed by RUclipsrs.
Thank you! This was super helpful!!
This is brilliant, so informative and so friendly and funny. Thanks for making this video!

Eduardo, this is genius! Especially the organization! Thanks for sharing it buddy.
Excelente video, felicitaciones Eduardo.
Very nice overview! Your zines look great! Thank you for sharing!
This is really helpful. Thinking of making one as a gift to give others. :D
I am currently putting together a zine. Still shooting the last final images for it but am at a point where I’m more interested in designing it. So I’m working in Scribus since I can’t afford an Adobe CC at the moment. So we shall see how this goes. 👍🏾😂
That's so freaking awesome. Thanks for sharing.
A very thought out placement. Thanks Ed, truly inspiring as always ❤️
Excelente vídeo.
Desde éste vídeo me suscribo. ¡Gracias por compartir esto!
Your an amazing photographer
que buen tema edu!!!!

Thank you for the zine education!!! You and Fran are so funny
Wow, i admire you guys so much. Keep making videos!
Sorry but your tank is not a Paterson-Tank. The tank you are using is so hard to open when your hands are wet. That works much better with a paterson tank. Great video. Thank you🙂👍
good work man!
Good video. But FWIW I think that tank you were using to develop is not Paterson, it's AP or Jobo
If you're searching for a legally free for commercial use software to produce your Zines or books, Try Scribus.
Really helpful video Ed, thanks! And especially interesting to me, since I work at an online printing company (don’t want to hijack your comments for advertising, but we do the entire process for things like this within 3 working days 😉). About time to use that employee discount!
That’s awesome! Share the links, so people can compare and have more options!

I am also planning on making something with my Japan photos :)
Straight and to the point 👍🏽

so useful thank you!
3:30
Very interesting video, it helped me a lot!
Small note: That's not a Paterson tank, it's from AP (a Spanish company, I have the same tank).
Hola Eduardo! Do you have a video on how to develop? I am just getting started with film photography. Thank you!
Change human kind!!! 😂😂😂. Love it! Awesome video and very helpful. Thanks so much. 👍🏾
The girl gave such good advice.
Love this. I have a question; How true are the black and white images in these books? Reason i am asking is that I saw a friend of mine's zine and they were supposed to be of black and white photos, but each had casts of green. thanks!
This is great, what do you feel about using a digital style modern camera like a Canon Rebel for example?
Can you please do a tutorial on how you post your panoramic photos from your xpan onto Instagram? Thank you
Nice video! Thanks! But couldn't understand why did you switch from bw to color and back in one book? What is an idea?
Thanks!
Cool Video, Keep up the good work!
Immensely helpful
Great !
Great..thx!
Very interesting video, I have just a question how do you scan the xpan? I have an xpan too but I'm not completly happy of my xpan scans.
What do you think about Lightroom Book module? Is it good for zine creation?
Awesome stuff 👏🏻
I want to ask you one question about Instagram. What do you think about accounts of people which use white frames on all their photos. Is it looks stylish for you?

Gracias!
Sí, soy yo! No conozco imprentas allá.
Hey Edquardo , thanks for the video. i have been doing the same thing with my pictures ( didgital and film ) using another miduim which is Instagram stories. what do you thinck about that ?
Does a zine need to be strictly film? or can i use a dslr??
you can use whatever ya want!
where u buy cameras
Would you or any friends from here suggest a similar company in the states?
great video! I subscribe!
That is AP tank, not Paterson :) great channel, subbed!
2 for 1 on glasses?
A free alternative to InDesign is Google Docs or Slides.

Very informative. Which zine format on Awesome Merchandise did you use, A4 Mono Zine? Shipping to where I live in Bangkok is free but I wonder how long It would take.
I use Comic book A5 format!
Nice video. What kind of paper did you use con the photobooks?
I say it on the video! :)
Nice video. Tnks for the tips.
I have a question about selling pictures with strangers face on it. Is it legal or you need always ask for permission?
Everywhere it’s different. Do a google search about the regulations of your specific country.
So this project only works for roll film? No, I find that hard to believe.
¿Has pensado en usar LaTeX para hacer tus zines?

this is not an M10, it's an M. the first one. it has a mic in.
I got it. Now I understand, mine is a M10. Thank you so much!

you do know what a zine is, right?
