    Where should you print your zine? In this video I discuss the do's and dont's of printing through local print shops. How to find print shops near you, and how to approach a print shop with your zine project.
    At the time of making this video, I do not have any copies available of either zine mentioned for sale. Reprints may happen in the future, however there are no guarantees that any of the projects will have another run of prints.
    Print Shops in Grand Rapids I've used:
    (Both have confirmed that they can take out of city orders if for whatever reason you cannot find a shop near you)

    Hey Guys! Excited to bring you this highly requested (and caffeinated) video on where to go to print your zines. This is by far the biggest question I get about zine making, and rightfully so. Locating a printer to go through can be half the battle at times. However, over the past couple years working through the different zines I've printed and sold, I learned some do's and don'ts within the print industry. I hope these tips and tricks serve you as well as they have served me and the handful of individuals I walked through the process in the past. I hope to see plenty more zine coming out in 2019 and beyond! I would love to hear about any projects you are currently working on, or any other questions you guys have about the zine making process here in the comments! As always, I'm no expert, but I am here to serve in any way I can. Cheers -NRM

    You’re right! I’ve lived in this fairly small town for 25 years and never heard of a print shop in the area. I just did a quick Google search and there were three, two of which I’ve passed by many times but never knew what they did based on their storefronts (print shops evidently aren’t very good marketers). Thanks for the tip!

    Brilliant video, Nick. I really appreciate how transparent you've been here about your mark ups. Of course that's not the purpose of this video, but it helps to understand why you make such decisions as folding each copy, for example. I definitely have a few things I could share about my experience in the UK, if anyone needs assistance with that.
    Side-note: the video production on this video is another level. Small tweaks, but I'm a massive fan. Kudos!

      Thanks buddy! With the new gear I am trying to work some more production value into the videos. Still getting the hang of it all, but its a move in the right direction for sure. And I happily share the markups and profits on the work. We as creatives should not shy away from actually making some extra income on our works. There's times to give away for free or next to nothing, and then other times to step up to the plate and present the value proposition, knowing full well the work is worth it. Understanding when to give and when to ask is part of the wisdom of a good artist right? Sorry ran off on a trail of thought for a second. haha. Sometimes I use the comments section as a bit of a personal notebook 😅 Thanks for your support, my friend!

    Thank you very much , so good to have you back. Answering many questions I have asked my self in the past. My next question is who is going to buy my poxy zine anyway, I have a vague plan to make a hand bound book/zine a bit like the print I sent you at Christmas but with about 20 pages (40 sides) I have in mind to make about 20 copies, then I think why? who am I going to sell them to anyway. I have thought about making an Etsy shop. I don't know, is it just a massive amount of self doubt, or should I just get off my arse and give it a go. When there is precious little money in it I do wonder if there is any point at all. Anyway rant and grumble over. I thought all you had to say was excellent. Thanks Man . M

      Hey thanks, Martin! And I feel what you are talking about is something every artist struggles with it. The truth is there is never a guarantee that the project will sell, or hit with the masses. But for myself I have learned its important to step out, and trust that I can't be the only one who would find these things interesting. I can tell you that I would definitely be interested in purchasing a copy of your book when it comes out! I know your work, and know that its definitely something that will touch a broad audience. My vote is its incredibly important to step forward on the project! I hope to see it come out this year :)

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  2 года назад

      It really comes down to building a good relationship with your printer and helping them understand the blacks you are trying to achieve. If you're printing from home you may want to try different paper types or crush your blacks much further than you think you need to. Uncoated paper tends to absorb the pigment density, so you kind of have to build it back up by exaggerating the black points all the more.

    What paper should I use to print black and white photos. I gotta a printer and want to print my own Zine. I noticed that the paper I have kinda dulls out a lot the photos and the black aren’t that well.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  3 года назад

      I cant tell you the right paper for your project, but I can say often times with matte papers and uncoated papers you will need to adjust your black points in lightroom or whatever editing software you use to compensate for the paper soaking in the inks. I suggest doing small test prints of the images and making adjustments to the black points until it displays the way you want it and then print your zine with the newly adjusted files.
      Hope that helps!

      @@pedrojopereira There is nothing wrong with making a print project solely for the sake of having your own work in print, for you and your family. I do that with physical prints all the time. The same information applies to that type of project as well. Most that are reaching out to me with these questions are looking to sell their projects, and I myself make book projects for the sake of selling and getting the work out to larger audiences. Both are completely valid and have their place. I appreciate your comment and kind words, buddy! :)

    I imagine the only problem with this is that you'd be shipping globally, which can be pricy, perhaps less than on-demand printing though I'm not sure

    any tip on diy saddle stitching? got 34 spreads

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  11 месяцев назад

      If you are doing just staple bound they make booklet staplers that would work well with 17 sheets. Otherwise, if you are truly stitching then getting some good leatherworking stitching tools would set you up well. They don't have to be expensive, just proper tools. Find a heavy gauge thread in the color you like and experiment with a couple different stitching patterns to see which one suits your project best. Thank you so much for this video...I may have missed it, but did your local printer use a xerox machine? I can’t imagine these were photo offset printed. I am putting together a zine and my local guy is getting some pretty damn good prints out of his xerox. I mean, it’s not photogravure :), but it very acceptable. Just curious to know what your guy is doing.

      Haha, this is the result of editing an already caffeinated video late in the evening, and taking all of the pauses out for the sake of time 😅 (smacks head). I played it back yesterday and realized it was an entire video of nonstop talking haha. But its a 26 hour render process and extra time of editing I couldn't give to the video. So I posted it knowing these (very valid) comments would come in. haha. Hopefully I will keep this in mind for future video edits. Thanks so much for your honesty!

    I tried lookiing at my local printing places in the capital region of New York to have my zines printed and the prices were outrageous!!! I would have had to charge $100 for a zine, that's ridiculous....So I went with Blurb and Magcloud because their prices were much lower than what I had around here.....

      Hey Reuben, it should all still be very relevant. Finding a local shop and asking for a small run of staple-bound booklets should still be the cheapest way to go 80% of the time. Plus, it has extra benefits like print proofs, connection to the employees, no shipping fees, etc. Hope that helps

    Zines are supposed to be a cheap way to spread your message. Making the zine should be low cost from the start...

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  5 лет назад +1

      There seem to be two cultures of zine making, the first being DIY gritty take it as it is because it was suppose to be cheap as can be (Which I actually find quite fun and appealing in certain ways). And then there is more of the community I chat with, which is we want to make affordable but high quality publications that present our work in a way that feels consistent with our other printed work. Both have their reasons and uses. But I do find that going with the local printers helps to bring the cost much closer to the diy pricing, which at least for my pocket book is a beautiful thing. Ha! Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys!
