The content of Sean’s latest video is excellent. I want to call attention to his delivery of his very useful information and insights. It is no mean feat to sit on a couch and talk directly into a camera for over twenty minutes and keep an audience engaged. If you think otherwise try it sometime. Sean has the discipline to always be making eye contact with the camera lens. Why? Because that’s where the viewer is. To do that and keep track of what he is saying and what he’s going to say next is easier said than done. Of course there are a few well chosen cutaways but the bulk of his presentation is just himself sitting on a couch having a conversation with a camera lens. Sean’s technique is simple but not simplistic. I’m very grateful that he maintains such high standards in his work. Well done.
If you use Lightroom, you can use a smart collection instead of moving images around in folders. I use a system of stars to rank images in the year and then create a smart collection of all the 5 star images for the year. Then, I assign a keyword (e.g. yearbook) to the ones that are candidates for the book and create a second smart collection of book candidates. From there, it's a simple matter of adding/removing the keyword to zero in on 40 photos for my book. It beats moving photos around or duplicating photos. Your photos can stay in the folders belonging to the shoot that created them.
That's kind of more efficient and Lightroom generally is as much a cataloguing software as it is for editing... but it also means your rankings etc. won't be a available outside of Lightroom, that's what I don't like about it. It's not really possible to Switch between multiple devices, especially if some of them don't support Lightroom. For the others, you still need to sync the catalog all the time
Dear Sean, thank you so much for including the nitty gritty stuff like pricing for samples and all the step-by-step tips. It really matters for someone like me who knows I want to make a photo book, but have never even look much into it! Thanks!
I really love how thoughtful you are in all of your videos! No flashy nonsense, just calm delivery, useful information, and a healthy vibe of positivity and optimism! Thank you, sir, for your great work and for being the source of inspiration!
Great insight to your process. On the subject of sales, I was one of those with no clue on what volume of sales I could expect, so I ran it as a Kickstarter project, then I knew how many orders I had to fulfil as well as how many extra copies I could order while still ensuring I’d made a modest profit. Worrying I’d be lumbered with a load of copies I couldn’t sell and wasted money on was putting me off doing it. Kickstarter made sure it happened and I’m so pleased with it. Seeing my images in print was the most satisfying element of the whole process.
Funny to see a shot from our Lisbon photowalk, it was a nice sunny morning! I remember the end of it a lot, all of us relaxing by the statue at the end of the walk, aware of the pandemic but blissfully unaware of was to come, and to me it felt the last moment before the storm came, later that week I would become "home bound"...
Thank you for breaking down the process, your tips are pure gold! Making a book just for oneself to reflect upon the year is a marvelous idea. It reminds me of the photo albums we used to have when I grew up in the 90's. Anybody else have old photo albums laying around? 🤔
I have found for myself that starting every year with a plan for the year's book helps. Basically, I pick three photos each and every week to go into my annual collection. Then do an edit for the annual book in the new year. Works for me. Thanks, Sean, for your video.
Thanks to your video I'm just preparing my first ever photo book... Lost of work involved. Made me appreciate the professional published books. I'm curious to see my work on paper. Thanks a lot :)
Very timely as I was exploring the idea of producing an annual book for myself. I love your methodical approach, get out 2-3 times a week, post once a day to Instagram, ending up with 365 photos to wiggle down to a book. Thank you.
Timely reminder for the new edition of your book. Ordered Sunday evening and delivered this morning (Tuesday). Excellent service and another great edition, well worth the money
Thank you for just laying it all out on the table & clarifying the simple truth about the process of photography from start to finish. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Well that's strange. I was on a completely different thought process today with my photography... Looked on your site and saw (for once) your book wasn't sold out, so thought I'd get one. Then popped onto RUclips and noticed this video. No wonder it's not sold out yet! Always a pleasure to learn from, and consider the words you have to offer. Cheers Sean
Been a big fan of yours for quite a few years now. Happy to say I just purchased this years zine. Looking forward to keeping this and referencing your images for the rest of my career. As always, thanks for the straight forward, honest, and caring tone you take in your videos.
Thanks for pulling this video together Sean, your observations and advice helped me organize my own thoughts in terms of content, themes and simplicity for an upcoming effort.
I really love what you said about having them as a reference for your progression and evolution as a photographer and an artist, it's inspired me to do the same - even if it's just a yearly photo album that I fill up with prints!
this was an amazing video, thank you. honestly i am getting to the point where i'm about to start selling prints, and making a book out of them had never occurred to me. i love how organized and efficient it is, and all the stuff that i have taken over the years that i really love i could have in a book, that's beautiful. i loved that little sample of your pages at the end. beautiful play between shape and light.
I have recently been on a journey of watching all of your videos. I really enjoy them and I feel like you always manage to share something that is meaningful. Thank you so much!
One of the recent personal step that truly helped improving my photography was to start printing photos and books: 1st - the process of finalizing and respecting your work and caring about your photo 2nd the result, the book, helps looking at your photo from a different more critical perspective. Great video Sean!!
Unsurprisingly another engaging, illuminating and informative presentation. Of the multitude of channels to which I subscribe, I look forward to your postings the most. I know that when I hit that arrow, the next whatever minutes of time I spend with you on the screen will be thought provoking, inspiring and will leave me enriched in understanding either with respect to the art/craft of photography or (sometimes) the art of life itself. So, in either regard, thanks and “keep ‘em coming.”
Absolutely the best video about printing on this platform. For months I have been looking at tons of videos for printing my photos but none have really answered my questions like this one. Thank you for putting this together Sean! 🙏🏽
Great video! Thanks! I actually just started putting my work into books in 2020, just for myself and to give as gifts to friends and family. I find it’s even more satisfying to have a collection of my images in a book than making individual prints.
So pleased I secured one thru your membership pre video notification. Bloomin bargain too 😊. Super excited to see how you captured images through lockdown too, as being a beginner photographer, well not even a photographer as such, just using a camera as a way of seeing, I've found it really difficult to capture something of merit within the small window of daylight I've had these past months. It's all a learning process, and the journey is fun, but it's also a nice treat to buy your book for myself to see what an experienced eye sees, and how that might help me move in my own direction. Also very interested to see the design from your friend, being a graphic designer by day myself. Thank you for all the tips here, packed full of useful content, delivered in your honest and stylish way. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thanks Sean.
Just received my copy of "Collection IV" courtesy of Jersey Post, FedEx and Canada Post. Time for a cup of tea. I'm looking forward to this. Thanks Sean!
Fantastic appraisal of self publishing Sean. Some people actually think its easy, but you've covered all the bases here and told it like it is. I haven't actually attempted a zine yet, certainly not with the intention of selling, though I have made several one-off books for my own use, and bought Zines from people like yourself and Josh. But the whole process as you have laid out here is an enticing prospect of something I may pursue! It also illustrates the efforts and steps your have to go through, along with how the costs need to be justified in the selling price. Great work, and many thanks for the inspiration. Cheers, Ray.
Excellent level of detail. I caught the book bug after Saal Digital gave me a voucher, in case it was the only time I could create a book I picked my fav photos and organised them into half a dozen chapters. The very best were full page or even double-spread, other shots I wanted to see in print I placed into groups of 2, 3 or 4 on a page. I was amazed to have my own work in my own book. Working on the next volume now.
The print form so inspiring...I can see it on the screen and have one reaction BUT seeing and FEELING it in my hands creates an entirely unique experience. You inspire!
Having my own photobook or zine is one of my biggest dreams. I actually had one of my photos printed and it's just a whole different experience between looking at an image on the phone than seeing it on paper.
Thanks for this video, I love how whatever you talk about you always simplify a process and make it seem within the grasp of the viewer whilst being realistic at the same time.
I think the correct line from the movie "Field of Dreams" is, " If i build it he will come", meaning the ghost. It's been misquoted since then. * If you can't decide whether it's a zine or book, maybe you could combine the two names and call it zook or bine! :-).
what a coincidence! I just planned to come up with a photo book of my own photography journey, and my favorite youtuber talked about this in time. thanks for sharing great content
Really enjoyed your talk. I'm just into my second year of photography and thinking about a small photo book of my learning progression. Like your idea of having these books around for reference.
Just checking in to see how things are as you usually do 'a year ahead' video around January. I'm also missing your two videos a month! Stay safe and can't wait to see what you put up next!
I really enjoy the channel Sean. I've produced two small books just for friends and family and to have a representation of my images that I can hold. There is nothing like holding a book of your work in your hands. I am also working on a longer version with some of my writing included so this video was very timely and helpful. Lastly, I just placed an order for your book for 2020. I have been collecting books from others to help me with ideas and to understand layout. That is the part for me that is most difficult. It is quite rewarding and thank you for doing this video.
Thanks again for your wise and thoughtful advice about every aspect of this passion/profession. It's a gradual thing to build confidence in our own photography, and it's very inspiring to follow your process through the years, learn from you and admire your work.
Ordered right away! I only have your first one so far and I absolutely love the images. Especially as I live in Munich and some of them were shot here. Thanks for your insights and your awesome videos. You really are a inspiration to me!
This is a very good, concise summary of the primary considerations for creating a book-like collection of one's work, Sean. Well-done! As a veteran of several such projects, and being up to my chest in two projects as I write this, it resonated with me. I would also second Huw Morgan's general suggestion to use Lightroom's extremely powerful passive "smart collection" capabilities to aid in gathering work for such projects. It's absolutely indispensable.
Always, the best part of the start of the year is the release of your book. I'm pretty excited. Here's wishing you a good start to your 2021. I can't wait to see what you create over the next twelve months.
Ordered,so looking forward for the postman to deliver perfect book for lockdown, Big thank you for your RUclips channel got me back in to photography now I am starting making videos again.
In this video I liked that you converted the profit percentage to amount of work to be done instead of the more traditional risk angle. This is something I don't hear often, and I think it's more representative of the actual journey. Also kudo's for mentioning the real-life experiences like service, returns and missing packages. Often forgotten, and time you need to reserve in your day/week to do. Just a side note. The square space promotion was on point here. I didn't even notice it until mid-way. :-)
Ordered a copy too! All previous versions I missed out on. In order to help you with the channel, especially in these hard times. Of course hoping to learn from it too. 😁
Bought last year's bookzine. Ordering this right know. Your work inspires me and makes me want to go out and shoot more, it helps me to refine my vision to be able to capture those things too
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Am no where near the level of publishing a book, but I was convinced that I should give it a try if nothing else to have a physical version of my progression (for better or worse). Thank you for the inspiration.
Thank you Sean for sharing your experience and advice, it's such an helpful video. I have been thinking about creating a book for some months, and your video comes at the right time!
Solid advice. I would just add that one should consider publishing a PDF version under a Creative Commons copyright licence and adding it to the Internet Archive's book archive. That way your work will last for many, many years into the future. Am "Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)" licence protects your work against derivatives yet still allows people to freely share and view it. This year I republished my latest novel under a CC BY-NC-ND copyright licence and added it to the Internet Archive's book archive two years after its initial commercial release. While I might lose a bit on sales I know it will be read by many long after I leave this world. We create not only for enjoyment but to be remembered after we are gone. Don't let your creative works be forgotten just because they can't be legally shared.
thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience on to others looking to learn. this is great information to help me have more purpose with my photography and bring more goals and projects and focus into it rather than just wandering aimlessly taking photos and obsess over gear. i've been wanting to start a project like this for a while now starting with making a zine/book type project across the last 20 years of photos i've taken
Watching this while I´m hand-numbering the latest edition of my zine March & Rock :) Lot's of great advice Sean, it's a lot of work but every step in the process has it's charm. Putting together a publication definitely helps you understand your own photography better - time well spent!
Hi Sean great video as usual I didn’t even wait till the end of your piece to see the images. I purchased your book so I don’t miss out. Cheers Anthony 👍🏿
Edward Steichen once said that if you spend a life in photography and you end up with 40 great pictures, you have done the impossible. What I like about your approach is to take the creative moneky off your back and just do it. It also is a major incentive to get you to take pictures.
Thanks Sean. Great video as alway, and as someone who is aiming to start self publishing this year the information is incredibly helpful; thanks again.
This is not the kind of thing I would usually be interested in buying but I genuinely appreciate your channel and your photography so have made the purchase. Looking forward to looking through it. :)
Dear Sean thank you very much for the video, it is always a pleasure to listen to your thoughts and advice. I already ordered your most current book and I am so excited to get. But I almost didn’t do it since the shipping is insane. I know it absolutely not your fault, it simply pains me to give more than one third of the overall costs to a third party and not to you. Anyhow you are a great inspiration!!!
Thanks for this. I’ve wanted to learn more about publishing and this review is helpful. Also, I placed my order for Collection IV. I’ve missed the others, but look forward to receiving and reviewing your collection from 2020.
Thanks for the great content you put out Sean. You and Ted Forbes are probably the best communicators of all the people I follow on RUclips. I made the decision to do a personal project this year and put the images into a book. Not for sale or anything, just for me. This will be helpful and I'm sure I will come back a re-watch it later in the year.
Great video Sean. Thanks for sharing. Coincidentally I reached out to you with a question about your publishing methods last year and you took the time to answer me. Much appreciated, love your work, keep it up.
90 is a good number. I just had a look at my 2014 photo book and counted 88 images. Yes, that's how far behind I am - 2014! I'm aiming to get my 2015 one finished this month.
Hello Brother Sean, always uplifting and enlightening to tune-in to your channel. I've ordered Collection IV and really looking forward to receiving it. If we can even get a real handle on COVID and I visit London (which is on my bucket list) I will bring my book just in case I see you and ask if you would autograph it. Remain safe and well. Peace on your journey.

That's really kind Roger, thank you.

Thats what i do also
Great idea thanks!

Everyone should follow this man too. Love your channel
@@ventricity I second that!
I really love how thoughtful you are in all of your videos! No flashy nonsense, just calm delivery, useful information, and a healthy vibe of positivity and optimism! Thank you, sir, for your great work and for being the source of inspiration!
appreciate you sharing your advice....
I like people who know what they are doing or talking about, you’re one of them.
I find this man to be incredibly helpful... Clearly goes beyond the minimum...
Great insight to your process. On the subject of sales, I was one of those with no clue on what volume of sales I could expect, so I ran it as a Kickstarter project, then I knew how many orders I had to fulfil as well as how many extra copies I could order while still ensuring I’d made a modest profit.
This is great insight
Thanks to your video I'm just preparing my first ever photo book... Lost of work involved. Made me appreciate the professional published books. I'm curious to see my work on paper. Thanks a lot :)
Very timely as I was exploring the idea of producing an annual book for myself. I love your methodical approach, get out 2-3 times a week, post once a day to Instagram, ending up with 365 photos to wiggle down to a book. Thank you.
Thanks for all of your great work. I couldn‘t think of any video on this channel I didn‘t enjoy or couldn‘t profit from. Just ordered my copy.
Timely reminder for the new edition of your book. Ordered Sunday evening and delivered this morning (Tuesday). Excellent service and another great edition, well worth the money

Oh Sean, what a gem you are! Thanks for sharing so much with us
My girlfriend bought a very nice bookcase where collection IV will fit perfectly. Can't wait to hold it in my hands. And love your video's.
I really love what you said about having them as a reference for your progression and evolution as a photographer and an artist, it's inspired me to do the same - even if it's just a yearly photo album that I fill up with prints!
Thanks, all really helpful insights. Makes me think more about the book I make each year for my own use, about how to improve and maybe share

Just received my copy of "Collection IV" courtesy of Jersey Post, FedEx and Canada Post. Time for a cup of tea. I'm looking forward to this. Thanks Sean!
Wow - I have seen so many videos about ‘how to make a zine?’ But this one by far is the best one. Well explained and straightforward!
Thanks Sean. Love the idea of small, inexpensive, print outs to aid in sequencing and layout. A simple thing to do but so effective.
Just ordered the 'Collection IV', my first Photography book and I cannot contain the excitement.
Fantastic appraisal of self publishing Sean. Some people actually think its easy, but you've covered all the bases here and told it like it is. I've been thinking about putting a zine together for awhile. This was definitely the push I needed.
this is perfect just in time as I'm experimenting to put together a zine. 🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing this info, I always wanted to share pics from my Himalayan treks to the outside world.
I love the pic of the guy blowing smoke. It transported me there in an instant!
The print form so inspiring...I can see it on the screen and have one reaction BUT seeing and FEELING it in my hands creates an entirely unique experience. You inspire!
I am old school. internet sucks. print rules.

Book ordered - best value information, advice and thought provoking content on photography I know of. Thank you!
Just ordered my copy. Happy to be able to support your work.

Always learned something from your videos even though some videos have nothing to do with me 👍. Thank you Sean .

Artists who draw have shelves full of their sketchbooks. It makes sense for photographers to have something similar!
I like the honesty =, have always been a fan will always be. cheers from Egypt
I always find your videos full of great advice. Purchased one of your books to support your work. Please keep it up!
I love your Video's Sean, always more thought provoking and insightful than so many out there. Book 4 now ordered. Thank you!
Fabulous video! Thank you for walking us through the self publishing process.

Fantastic video and explanation- Even though I am not a photographer, it is very applicable to my craft…. thank you for sharing!
Thank you Sean for sharing your experience and advice, it's such an helpful video. I have been thinking about creating a book for some months, and your video comes at the right time!
Another superb video. Thanks, Sean. Really appreciate your insights into how to go about this.
Thank you. Just ordered collection IV, my second of yours, really looking forward to it.
Looking forward to purchasing the next book just found your page recently and glad to be able to get a hold of one of your books!
Don't let your creative works be forgotten just because they can't be legally shared.
your YT channel and Nick Carver´s are by far the best Photogrphy YT Channels. thank you for all the videos.
thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience on to others looking to learn. this is great information to help me have more purpose with my photography and bring more goals and projects and focus into it rather than just wandering aimlessly taking photos and obsess over gear. i've been wanting to start a project like this for a while now starting with making a zine/book type project across the last 20 years of photos i've taken
My photography book has been put back 18 months by Amberley Publishing, so I'm seriously considering self publishing. Thanks for the video, Sean.
Just got #4 during this video! I still regret not finding you earlier; I'm missing #1 in my collection.
Excellent workflow and decision-making process !
Fresh eyes, that is something I really try to do when evaluating. Thanks for the info.
Watching this while I´m hand-numbering the latest edition of my zine March & Rock :)
Lot's of great advice Sean, it's a lot of work but every step in the process has it's charm. Putting together a publication definitely helps you understand your own photography better - time well spent!
... And that's from a man with lots more experience in this than me:)
This is great advice Sean. I actually try to print a copy of most of my images small as it always surprises me how different some images look.
I learned a lot from this. Gonna go order a bunch of small prints and get to sequencing. Thanks!
Also, I’ve just ordered Collection IV, super excited for it to arrive 😬
This is not the kind of thing I would usually be interested in buying but I genuinely appreciate your channel and your photography so have made the purchase. Looking forward to looking through it. :)
Wow, such good and helpful content in all your videos. You're an absolute star, thank you.
Thank you for your insights. It helps getting things startet right away. 👍
Thanks for creating such an educational and encouraging tutorial!
Sorry Gunnar. I can only account for the cost of the book.
*ZINE TIME!!!* Yes!
Fantastic
Your channel is refreshing . Simply excellent.
Thank you for sharing your process, your strategy is so efficient! I've learnt to be more thoughtful about my sequencing
