Brendan's zine really resonates. Photography was a huge part of my recovery following blood cancer and a pulmonary embolism that very nearly killed me. A camera and a small dog (my border terrier Dexter) really did give me a purpose and saved my life. Anyway, top, top work Brendan and thank you Ted for sharing it on what is hands down the best photography channel on RUclips. Much love to you both :-)
Thank you so much Ted and everyone in the comments for the kind words! If there are any questions about me or the work, reply to this comment and I'd be happy to answer them!
There is a sea of talented photogs and beautiful works whose name you only just heard of. I can only feel so humbled. This has reinforced my belief that, to really create a great work, create something that is meaningful to you personally. Once you put yourself and time in it, slowly the value of your work will bubble through to the surface. It doesn't matter if others see it, but you'll know.
Thanks Jonathan! Though I do shoot with film and my mirrorless camera, I definitely subscribe to the adage "the best camera is the one you have with you." Most of the time, my phone is all I have with me!
We all have something to share that really does connect everyone even if we never meet. When I retired last year my wife suddenly came down with a rare condition called CIDP. I’ve taken a few photos that are personal to me and I’m not sure I’m as brave as Brandon was however it does hit home that we all need to show compassion for one another and give grace where it’s needed. I’ve watched your channel for many years because you do it for the right reasons and many because it’s genuine. Thanks for all you do Ted.
Thank you for making these mail videos. Your last thought makes me think of doing live stream for these mail videos, you can talk and have a conversation with us in real time
First of all 🙏 from Chile, the end of the world, thanks for all these years. Art of Photography has become an endless fountain of almost anything you could imagine about photography. And to have the possibility to share acces to the zines at real time was simply unthinkable just a few years ago. A blessing 🙏
Richard James Palmer's "Nan" reminds me of my mom, who I lost a year ago. I wish I'd taken more photos of her; not just cell phone snaps, but real photos honoring her very interesting life. Yes, the family has hundreds, but not enough of mine, for me. Brendan's zine is mind-blowing. What a concept, to face possible death by both celebrating and questioning his own life, photographically. I don't know if I'd have the nerve to even start such a project.
I'm 18 and I've been taking photos for a while years now, these videos inspire me so much! They make me want to go out shoot and one day have my own zine printed I'm hoping to buy my first camera soon!
I have seen many of your videos and I love mail videos. Your channel inspires learning and it is one of the best educational youtube channels. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to continue seeing more of these videos.
This episode really hit close to home with me, I'm a Geordie (We're from Newcastle UK) so seeing someone from Sunderlands work being presented on the show was crazy, the subject really resonates with me too, the photos really remind me of my upbringing. Really loved the book, pretty good for a Mackem haha!
Great video, Ted! Stunning work submissions by all. I love the fact that one of the most moving and stunning projects was shot on cell phone camera. It's having an eye, a feeling, and knowing how to use what equipment you have that truly creates an inspired image, and images. Keep these videos coming!
Great work, I love the mail videos. Have you ever considered hosting a live stream with some of the people that send in the mail? That could turn these videos into a conversation.
Such a good video brother... that last book, holy cow. SO... Do we have a podcast in the works? I would love to listen to these conversations between creative minds!
I really enjoy mail days, but also pick up on your comment about you just talking to a camera and would find a live stream an interesting idea one where you explore some of the photosvyou receiveand maybe reach out to the indvidual who sent it in and explore with them how they developed the image from location to technique to post processing. This shouldnt't focus on the gear but the ideas that went into capturing the image.
I’m working on a book about the English Seaside, but this is a 4-5 year project which is perhaps 80% complete. Rather than wait until the project is complete i want to produce a couple of zines on sub topics of the main body of work. I’d like the zine to be of high quality and wonder if you recommend any particular company or if you’ve been impressed with the quality of reproduction of any of the zones sent into your channel. Keep up the great work, what your doing is inspiring.
Really like the books, they all offered something unique and the quality of the material was excellent. My only concern is for the poor person who had the fifth zine, the one that never got shown, imagine being so close to a little recognition from Ted … and then … I guess they’ll never know 😔
@@cellogeye121 awesome, thanks! What a great zine, btw, reminded me of when I was sick.. should have done something like you did. Best of health to you.
I've been watching you for years and so very glad I found you. I always enjoy your videos. I have question. I've notice in your new studio that when you share viewer mail that over your right shoulder through the French Doors something is slowly spinning. I assume it's suspended from the ceiling. What is it?
Do you have a video on how to make a scene and the best publishing company to make one? I might have some customers that in it maybe interested in buying a book but I want to know the best place to get both discounts from or where they can just order them online and they drop ship?
Thanks for another great video, Ted. Brandon’s story is poignant and touching but in the end I see in his searching that he found no real concrete answers to questions that seem naw at all of us. In John 14, Jesus said to His disciples, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.“ Questions such as: How did we get here? Why are we here? What is our purpose for existing? Is there a God who created, so beautifully and artistically designing and meticulously engineering everything we observe, and if so, are we accountable to Him for how we live this very, very short life? Is there an afterlife? Where will I be spending it? My eternity? My forever? In heaven with God or in hell apart from Him? In the Scriptures, David, the king of Israel in about 750 BC wrote in the Psalms: Psalm 103:15-16, “As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place acknowledges it no longer.” Solomon, the wisest man ever wrote in Ecclesiastes 12:1: “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” Scripture also points out the reality that “the heart of man is desperately wicked and deceitful above all things, to the point where we can’t even fathom how depraved our moral condition is.” And that God looked upon mankind and offers us a way out. A redemption. The ANSWER to life in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” That we have all sinned against our Maker, God and have fallen short of His glory. That “the wages of sin is death,” not only in our flesh bodies but death in our soul. And ultimately, eternal separation from God in hell. In the Scriptures, Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” John 3:3. Repentance from sin, a transformation in one’s life! God giving a person a new moral conscience. Reconciliation with God, both in this life and for eternity! THIS is what Brandon is searching for but I believe hasn’t found it yet! A genuine peace thet passes all understanding that comes from knowing your sins have been forgiven and forever pardoned by God! That one has been given the gift of eternal life by the risen Savior, Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son. Jesus said in John 14:6 “Jesus said to His disciples, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Ted, I really enjoy your videos and I have learned so much! From time to time however, you touch on some of the deeper most important issues in life where you point out that we as people are searching for meaning purpose in life and are seeking answers, many of us seeking truth. I, in the most humblest way I can, wish to point others in the direction where they will find solid, true answers to life, which can only be found in God, in the Bible, through God’s Son, who because He loved mankind so much, gave His life for us and died on the cross for our sins and who rose from the dead, Jesus Christ, the living, risen Savior of the world. We will all give account to Him and we will all bow our knee to Him one day.
