"I just wanted to be an actor, I don't want to be a star." - so good in so many ways.
If I had the talent that would be my attitude too
jackson pine He’s got talent and a lot of intelligence. Most intelligent people don’t do that, if they can afford to do that.
@jackson pine he has morals, he didn't serve Satan & that's what it takes to becomes a hollyweird fallen from Grace soulless star.
He was really believable as a FBI special agent in "Teamster Boss...The Jackie Presser story"..also a Good almost documentary
@@bruceswearingen7718 I really liked him in Speed aswell. Just a certain air about him..
I really respect his attitude. He's basically saying: I'm going to do the job I'm hired to do to the absolute best of my ability, but once work time is over, my time is my own.
As it should be.
Thank you for explaining. I was having a hard time understanding what was going on here
@@kiayanow3345 How on Earth could you not understand what he was saying? It is crystal clear and in plain English. Perhaps you didn't watch the video at all?
@@aces553 Sarcasm
well said
First time I heard an actor speak like this.
Finally someone with some wisdom.
And a principled one.
Please go listen to Bill Duke!!!! So much wisdom!
Really?, remember there actors. Now that he did that dumb fukn commercial, do you still think hes so great? Fukn piece of shit they all are. Huck Follywood!!
I don’t know what commercial the maniac is talking about.
I wouldn’t say “finally someone with wisdom”. It’s just his choice. It’s not a better choice than someone who craves stardom. It’s just, presumably, the right one for him.
@@thomasjones1778 somebody's got some self-esteem issues!!! (But I won't be petty and say anything about spelling, grammar or punctuation!)
I've always said there's a big difference between an "actor" and a "movie star".
You never want to be the type who is a celebrity first, actor second, because most of the time it will not last, someone new always comes along. But if you are an actor first and are good at your job, you can sustain a career.
@@xtinkerbellax3 That sounds logical and intuitive to a degree, but not necessarily true anymore. The mechanics of "publicity machinery" have become so refined and potent that it can basically carry somebody along for decades that has very marginal talent. I don't think that's the case when Jeff Daniels was coming up as an actor.
There's dozens of "movie stars" now that don't have a sliver of Jeff Daniels talent. But yes, if you can really "act", you should be able to sustain a career as a working actor.
They call them " character actors" but they are just actors. Unfortunatly, star power is powerful in Hollywood.
“I didn’t go to star school.” ❤️what a pro
That line struck me as well.
loved it.
yes just watched godless on netflix and can say this guy can act
Clayton V what a great story. Glad you’re happier with your path now.
alex davies he sure can
“I just wanted to be an actor, I didn’t want to be a star”. Amen, brother. Good on you!
"When you're from the Midwest you have a really good bullshit detector."
Damn dude I can relate. I have a real hatred for bullshit
Same
I’m from Texas & I’ve got the same thing, pretty much conservative upbringing helps I guess. Lol
The farm kid in me says YES!
Same here, I'm from Illinois.
@@victorlaguna9003 I live in Southern Illinois
Damn Jeff is keeping it real. He is the kind of person I respect.
I agree. Love his honesty.
@@odisyates5420 you might as well have typed that you have a sad life and need attention on social media 😂 lol I mean seriously guy.
Is he talking about Tom cruise by any chance.
Jeff is so much smarter than the rest of HOLLYWOOD.Good for you.I hope you have a great life.
REMEMBER THE TIME HE GOT THE OSCAR FOR "TUCKER?" NO? CAUSE HE DIDN'T
@@hankrogers8431 I'd rather have a thousand non-Oscar winners like Jeff Daniels than one phoney who did.
You are so lost 😅😅😅😅
@@Allworldsk1 what is that supposed to mean?
It's cause he's not a Libtard.
John Wayne once told Paul Newman he could've been a much bigger Hollywood star, Newman replied he wasn't into the star maker machinery with all the phony-baloney. That's integrity.
You got that right.
And Paul was a much greater man than Marion
Amen to that Hi there
@@Hithere-ek4qt AND actor
John Wayne got that pretty wrong. How much more of a star did Paul Newman need to be? He had a great career, marriage and starred in the two greatest movies, Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Self awareness and integrity seem to be very good for ones mental health.
Here's the story on Jeff's lip. He cut himself shaving right before we taped the show. But Jeff, the true professional, said the show must go on...
theoffcamerashow “Fuck it” - Jeff Daniels
Thanks for the clarification. I'd love to talk about life with this man.
Thank you for answering that for me.
Um no way he cut the top and bottom lip...I think you gave him herpes!
Nothing wrong with a bit of herpies :)
He is truly a great guy. I was fortunate to interview him was I was a film student at The University of Michigan and he was so generous and real. Really went the extra mile for a nobody college kid. He hasn't changed. Also, incredibly talented songwriter, guitarist, musician.
That was refreshing.
Integrity is a lost art. Major props for staying true to who you are and what you’ve chosen to do in life.
Jeff Daniels is a really good guy, Im so happy for him on his success and staying true to himself. God Bless you, K
I have a new respect for this man.
I love that he brought up the "Action Star" trap, because it's so true. Too many great actors start to follow where the money leads them, and ending forgetting why they started acting in the first place.
Yes and no. Some started acting for the stardom and money. If being an action star makes that happen then they have fulfilled their goals. Look at Arnold - it's not like he had the acting talent to be anything else, but it worked for him and made him successful. I admire what Daniels is saying here and have always liked him as an actor, but not every actor or star will have the same goals.
HanQuixote money is why most people work. If Arnold or Sylvester can make millions doing the same thing over and over why not.
Poverty is not not Noble
Jack Vanderpool I think stalone was great in the movie Oscar. Was not an action movie.
Oscar felt more like a play than a movie to me but agree with you. He and the rest of the cast were great and it's definitely his best comedy work.
No, it's not poverty but not selling at any opportunity what is noble...not that this whole thing is about nobility. its about appreciating your life and whats important to you and not chasing the mirage of momentary satisfactions. I think thats what Jeff is talking about. His life and himself is just more important to him than that bullshit.
Love Jeff Daniels. Perfect perspective.
Michael Ozmun Production he’s just so great
Dang. That's the most integrity I've ever heard, from an actor.
I know right. That midwest honesty in acting is crazy.
Dave Chappelle said and did similarly.
That's a pretty low standard.
@@jaimesaenz221 well, if that's your opinion, goes to show the caliber of people in Hollywood.
He is grounded in his approach to life and acting. Class Act.
That is exactly why he is my favorite actor. Great great actor and person!
Found this when it first came out and, as someone who lives in the heart of LA, but Midwestern born and raised, I too, have that bullshit detector! Thanks Mom & Dad ❤❤I owe you everything, and I will see you again 🙏🙏🌟🌟 My North stars 💯💯
That man is beautiful and humble! He is a real acting king! I like that❤️
Jeff Daniels - What a talented, skilled professional. That's what I enjoy about his acting.
What an awesome guy , so authentic and grounded perspective
Brett Sanders If you knew him you wouldn’t say that. His nephew was my college roommate.
Ducati Drew whys that ?
@@Glen.Danielsen Is there anyone who's righteous who's not self-righteous by your definition?
He is not selling his soul for any movie role. Very cool man.😎 His integrity is intact.👍
Home boy becomes star! Never let it go to his head, still a home boy ✊🌷💖🌟
Wow...I can't even describe the amount of respect I have for this man!
REMEMBER THE TIME HE GOT THE OSCAR FOR "TUCKER?" NO? CAUSE HE DIDN'T
@@hankrogers8431 Considering I couldn't give a ROYAL FUCK about the Oscars (or any other awards shows for that matter), I stand by my original comment.
His natural cadence of speaking from 1:44 - 2:19 shows you why he's so perfect for Sorkin scripts.
I will never forget his portrayal of Joshua Chamberlain in the battle of gettysburg.
I love down to earth people like this. Celebrities who don't care about celebrity. No show. Can't wait to move back to the Midwest. People in that part of the country were so genuine(at least as best as I can remember from living there in the past). If only more of the entertainment industry modeled themselves like this guy. The world would be all the better for it.
“When your from the Midwest you have a really good Bullshit detector”. That’s is absolutely true... we detest pettiness and fakery.
I’m not from the Midwest myself but I completely get the whole not wanting to deal with bullshit. I think this guy is the most refreshing person as actors are concerned. Keep up the amazing work my man!
he never was on my radar as an actor, but....those 10 minutes on newsroompilot..and seeing the hole series...he blew me away..the whole staff of newsroom..i loved it.. this material found a neverending spot in my collection
Love this guy. From my home state Michigan
Wow, Daniels just described current Tom Cruise.
John Wick oh yeah the mummy sold so well...
ytriles true
More Bruce Willis. Tom cruise is still pushing the boundaries for blockbuster action films like MI:6
Jeff Daniels commits career suicide [caught on camera]
i mean id say tom cruise is a good actor though, id put "action star" like the rock, statham etc lol
This came up in my recommendations and I'm glad I watched. He's refreshing.
I admire his humility
Just finished watching Godless, tremendous delivery from Jeff Daniels. He freakin made that show!
Chris Rock says it's easy to get "hot." It's easy to quickly get attention and get fans and be on a hot streak, but how many of those people sustain that for an entire career? Of course, he was referring to flash-in-the-pan comedians, but the lesson is the same: talent and hard work make for a long career. That should be the focus. You treat every gig like it's your first, like it's your make-or-break gig. You continually work on your craft and do your best each time. Everything else - the parties, the photo ops, the red carpet - it's all fluff.
Man, he's so great and refreshing.
Anyone could apply this to any career. It should be the foundation we all strive to build for ourselves.
Jeff Daniels is literally the best dude. By the way he also plays amazing guitar.
Jeff Daniel's is a true human god bless him
god bless an Atheist?
...keep your jewish superstitious bullshit to yourself...
Love him.
username checks out...
Brittany Loveless He said he loves you too boo.
I love Jeff Daniel's thinking.
Smart and SMARTER!!! Jeff you are a very humble wise man!
Love my Jeff Daniels.. I'm from Michigan.. fly away home..😉
I loved that movie!
Is that escanaba in the moonlight?
There are many actors like that. Never wanted to be puppets of Hollywood.
Hilarious the interviewer thinking, whoa I love what Hollywood is selling 😛😛
What a fabulous guy! This is what a role model looks like!
Love this guy.
I wish there were more guys like Jeff.
I like that, a real man
I wish most other Hollywood stars had this grounded attitude. Top Man
Still s Star in my book. I love his movies.
The realest dude.
One of my favorite acters. So talented. ❤️
Best off camera episode ever. Stayed true to himself and didn`t drink Hollywoods koolaid.
Great philosophy
Jeff Daniels and Tim Allen......Proud of these Michigan guys.
Tim hell no, jeff hell yes. One supports a racist like trump the other calls him out.
@first/m /last what does that mean?
Jose Gonzalez ummmm yeah hardly. Guess you only hear what you want to hear. Tim is an American. Jeff is a liberal. Trump is a racist? 100% incorrect, Miguel.
Jose Gonzalez What? You don’t know how to look up things on your phone either? You can’t even figure out how to make a profile pic! El stupido
Trump isnt racist; Biden and the Demoncrates are racist, evil tyrants who have destroyed this country. Wakeup!
Wow even more respect for him hearing this truly truly a down to earth man
........
love the bold honesty.
Playing General Chamberlain in Gerttysburg moved me in a way beyond any entertainment in a movie. And "God's and Generals. Hopefully someone will make "Last full Measure"
He was actually a Colonel at Gettysburg
Thank goodness for Midwesterners! Salt of the earth qualities which are so needed nowadays more than ever!
That’s why I love that guy right there guys honesty
What a regular guy! Love him.
And now all that "star" stuff is being famous on Social Media. They're not that interested in your talent, they just want to know how many followers you have.
Not true at all
@@jonjonward3915 I wouldn't say "not true at all" lol. This guy's right. More followers = more exposure, more exposure = more likely to be seen. Also in an age of short attention spans, people are going to naturally levitate towards accounts with more followers and consciously assume the quality is better.
Famous for being famous.
In Dumb and Dumber, he was brilliant. Especially the whole after effects of the laxative drink served up by Lloyd.
Absolute honesty, nice to hear
What a completely lovely human being!
A pro &real person in the land of falsehood and he's still making a living and doing his craft. A rare fellow.
Paul Newman was a man more like Jeff Daniels as well...
Beautiful
He's probably the most underrated actor in Hollywood.
He sounds like a solid straight shooting man... Gotta love that...
Amazing. This interview is me, as a musician. I just wanted to play great music with great musicians. I didn't want to go to shows just to be seen. I didn't want to spend half my time driving instead of playing. I didn't want to have to go out for drinks or coffee or something with someone every other day just to pretend to be best friends with someone who'll get me work.
And in the end, that's why I'm not a musician anymore. I could play, and I was getting good gigs, but all the other crap that went with it...it wasn't worth it. So I'm out. No regrets.
You almost got stucki, Joel
damn... gotta respect his principle
This guy is awesome beyond words.
"I didn't go to star school"........BRILLIANT!
WOW!
Like a boss
lale
Love you, Jeff!!!!!! Love your movies!!!!!!!
Good on ya Jeff! One of favorites of all time.
love that
Tom Cruise description 1:44 to 2:14
And Liam Neeson :P
I was thinking Sylvester Stallone especially the bit about plastic surgery and the action star thing.
Ryan Teixeira Stallone was always that though. He's not pretending to he anything more, and he's fairly stable too.
I was thinking Robert Downey Jr.
So is Tom Cruise
"I want to be known as a really good actor". Hey Jeff, you are a really good actor. Thanks for coming back to Michigan.
I really respect this kind of outlook in Hollywood. It’s so rare.
Preach!
Yeah, dat!
he's showing that he's a good actor when he says he never wanted to be a star.
Well, perhaps you misunderstand him. I don't think he means that he didn't want high-profile roles. What he means is that he's not interested in all the trimmings and trappings that come with that sort of "star persona," if you will. And he proved it by moving back to Michigan and staying under the radar. Seriously--how often is Jeff Daniels in the tabloids? Never. Because he just goes in, plays his roles, and then gets the hell out and goes home.
Gods & Generals, LtCol. Chamberlain, that was the role that defined Jeff Daniels as an extraordinary actor, His portrayal blew me away.
Wise words indeed. Cheers, Jeff.
beautiful
Just as chilling as the famous "Newsroom" monolog. How about that.
Thanks for existing Mr Daniels
Always respected him. Thanks for filming him and uploading.
I hope every younger person who wants to act and gets sucked into the nonsense watches this.
*+Amby Cakes* Totally agree with you Amby! And also I hope they read this snippet taken from an interview where an actor spoke of chasing Oscar attention:
_"I'm just saying that I think it's bullshit. I think it's total, utter bullshit, and I don't want to be a part of it. I don't believe in it. It's a carrot, but it's the worst-tasting carrot I've ever tasted in my whole life. I don't want this carrot. It's totally subjective. Pitting people against each other . . . It's the stupidest thing in the whole world. It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when Walk the Line was going through all the awards stuff and all that. I never want to have that experience again. I don't know how to explain it-and it's not like I'm in this place where I think I'm just above it-but I just don't ever want to get comfortable with that part of things."_
-Joaquin Phoenix in interview about The Master gathering Oscar Buzz
+Amby Cakes - +Amby Cakes - Why because it sounds good? Yes. That's why. Because it appeals to your inexperienced sensibilities, and you therefore see it as some kind of timeless wisdom that "every younger person" should abide by.
Let's be real. Here we have a single B list (or even C list) actor describing his disinterest for playing the game in hollywood. And this is enough to convince you that every aspiring actor should take this approach?
Go round up 10,000 actors that took Daniels' "no-nonsense" approach and tell me how many of them made it big. You know what you're gonna find? A bunch of G-listers and failed actors that "stayed true to themselves" (because apparently networking yourself, meeting producers, and attending big events in your industry is somehow a betrayal of your true self?).
Here's what I hope: I hope every young actor does what's most likely to make them successful and/or happy. If some of them, or all of them, need the extra advantage of networking, shaking hands, going to premiers, and blowing up social media, then that's exactly what they should be doing. One can still be themselves while doing things they don't want to be doing. It's called being an adult.
Scott K- I dont think we all share your pessimistic view of what being an adult _has_ to be. I do agree with a lot of what you said though. Hollywood acting if you aren't A list is a toxic dump that dangles a carrot so big that thousands of people willingly drown their souls/kill themselves chasing it. The point is that "making it big" is not all it's cracked up to be. Chasing your dream doesn't have to mean selling out. And though your point of You do you and I'll do me is often good advice.
It's also true that the world has plenty of doses of your wisdom around every corner. (i.e. keep at it! Do all the stuff you don't like about acting and you'll be just as famous as Ryan Gosling) I find it refreshing to hear known, award-winning professionals advising young people to take stock of what's important to them. And to proceed with caution when chasing stardom.
Yeah, it's better that they give up on their dreams and return to a life of comfort, stability, security and bland mediocrity where the overcelebration of underachievement is uber alles.
I think the multitude of sexual harassment/rape cases in Hollywood has pretty much made anyone realize that Hollywood is a lot of nonsense.
Respect
Jeff Daniels is a handsome young gentleman! He is a national treasure!!!! He is priceless!
Love his honesty such a great actor
