      I've never agreed with someone on Star Wars more...I NEVER understood the blind hatred for the prequels...They introduced so much new LORE in the form of new planets, the jedi council, intergalactic politics, more alien races, etc. And meanwhile like you said the imagery was very iconic: the planet of Kamino, the imagery of the clones marching and attacking on Geonosis, the battle between obi wan and anakin on mustafar, the darth maul fight in episode 1, etc. I agree even the villains are great. General Grevious is a genius design for a villain, and he's appropriately menacing and does cool stuff. Darth Maul was mysterious but amazingly deadly in his lightsaber moves. Palpatine is arguably the best villain of all time due to his plot to take over the entire GALAXY by controlling BOTH sides of the war, both the republic and the separatists, and then execute the jedi and destroy the separatists and establish the clones as imperial soldiers. I agree...really its only hipsters and middle-aged star wars fans who would have a reason to be so HATEFUL towards the prequels. The prequels had some issues, but they were at the least decent movies and at best really unique, enjoyable, and meaningful films for the Star Wars franchise. The bandwagon hate for the prequels is by far the most infuriating and stupid bandwagon trend I've ever witnessed in entertainment.

      What destroyed Hollywood was the constant interference from government. The old Hollywood as in golden era was gone by the 1960s and what came out after that was a shadow of Hollywood. Most of the post 1960s production studios were in decline. Now there was still great films after that but it slowly sank to nothing.

During that period directors had unprecedented levels of control over their movies, we had films like easy rider, apocalypse now. Films you'd struggle to get made today. it's when Directors like Francis Coppola Ford, Martin Scorsese, Roman Polanski (man's a nonce but he knows how to shoot a film) burst onto the scene and made some of their best work. of course along with that Era came Lucas and Spielberg. In 1975 Spielberg put out a little film that would change the course of film history, Jaws. Jaws changed the game for studios, it was the advent of the modern blockbuster. they realised that they didn't have to take risks any more on edgy directors that appeal to the youth, instead big tentpole films that appeal to the masses, of course they didn't catch on straight away, as Lucas said people/studio execs expected star wars to bomb, when instead it blew up huge at the box office Hollywood as a whole started to notice that rather than hedge their bets across a number of medium budget films, why not just shoot a few high budget spectacle movies a year. This rolled on to what we have now, where that mid range budget film doesnt exist any more, every film is either a 300 million dollar mega franchise film or a 10 million dollar indie film.
      Spielberg and Lucas never meant to kill New Hollywood... but they kinda did by accident.

      I came to realize how much the force explains everything in the movies and i didn't even noticed. In episode 4 when the red droid got destroyed it was the will of the force because R2-D2 was meant to deliver the message that saved the galaxy, then when Han Solo speaks about never finding a reason to believe in any kind of magic and Kenobi smiles not because he is a jedi or a force user, but because so far all the events had played out according to the will of the force and Han can't realize it, you see a group of unlikely people, an old hermit, a farm boy, a smuggler with his Wookiee companion, and two droids, everyone of them played an important role to change the fate of an entire galaxy all of them, yeah that is the force allright.
      Even episode 1 is the same, all the conflict lead Qui-Gon to Anakin the chosen one in the most unlikely planet, the very only Tatooine, a planet that proved to be the center of the galaxy as everything starts in it. Other thing i didn't understood until recently is the scene with Qui-Gon and Watto when they put a bet on Shmi and Anakin, i always though that Qui-Gon did used the force to manipulate the dice in order to get Anakin but now i realize that wouldn't have proved anything, if Anakin was the chosen one then it was the will of the force to have Qui-Gon the most unlikely jedi to found him so the thing is the Dice was gonna pick Anakin anyway because it was meant to that. So that is how the force works guys, i can't think of another example as i haven't watched the films in a while, just episode 4 recently. Now all of this matters cause the force is a thing, call it God or whatever but it is there, it binds us it penetrates us and unite the universe together. The force will be with you all, always.

    Walt Disney was a huge fan of Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin, in turn, became a fan of the Mickey Mouse shorts that Disney was producing. Early in Walt's career, he got the chance to meet and have lunch with Chaplin at Republic Studios, which Chaplin was part owner of. Walt, then in his late twenties, asked the much older Chaplin if he had any advice for a guy trying to make it in the movie business. Chaplin said, 'Own everything you make. Don't give the bastards an inch.'
    Walt took that advice to heart. He changed the name of his studio from The Disney Brothers Studio to The Walt Disney Studio and became the sole producer of everything his studio made.
    Lucas was of the same spirit as Chaplin and Disney with his independent nature.
    It's ironic that years later, Lucas would sell his company to Disney, which had become the very thing both Chaplin and Walt himself hated.

    Lucas doesn't care really, He isn't the kind of director who does movies for a general public. His ideas were initially executed into film for him and his friends. He's an experimental director hence why he doesn't always make the best content, nevertheless the ideas he has are pretty good and Hollywood would definitely appreciate his mind with them.
    Ironically his biggest creation Starwars fell into what Lucas try to differ it from. The idea was original both OT and Prequels, but along comes the sequel and Force Awakens and is turned into a copy of what was once Lucas' original idea. Which is why Lucas is superior to Hollywood, they need to copy his idea to make it good again.
    Hollywood hates Lucas because Lucas doesn't need them to make the movies he wants.

    Over the years I've had mixed feelings about George Lucas, primarily in my misguided younger days, but these days I think he's a total legend. I can appreciate the prequels a lot more now, and look at them with admiration. Lucas is a titan of world building and mythology, and the prequels pioneered new techniques which are only just coming to fruition now. He laid the foundation for the likes of the Mandalorian for instance, which now benefit from techniques that started with the prequels. The prequel world that Lucas created is in full bloom now, with things like Bad Batch. And Lucas lead that charge. I can't help but admire everything he's done, and now I view Star Wars as the most expensive indie movies ever made, and framed that way, they're much easier to love.

    • @crusherven
      @crusherven 2 года назад +5

      Although I'll agree that the prequels look at lot better compared to the sequels, they still kinda clash with a lot of stuff in Ep4. Think of the old Imperial commanders/admirals or whatever who refer to the Force as an "ancient religion" and seem to think it's all a myth. But after the prequels we learn that the Jedi were numerous and well-known just 20 years ago. It would be like someone 50 years old today claiming that phone booths are a myth. It's very jarring. And the Clone Wars were way lamer than what I imagined.

    • @mage1439
      @mage1439 2 года назад +4

      I appreciate the prequels a lot more knowing that he was looking everywhere for help with them, but got turned down by everyone, and still produced movies that are far better than the ST. They definitely have problems, big ones, but they are still SW to the core, and still contain the sense of wonder that's supposed to mean.

    • @MrMisanthrope84
      @MrMisanthrope84 2 года назад

      @@crusherven I actually think they did a good job of showing how much propaganda works when eradicating a race of people. 20 years is a long time when you consider how much the world has changed in 20 years in the real world. Imagine being in a fascist regime for 20 years where anyone who didn't believe the party line or change their thinking was also eradicated like the Jedi. Imagine the amount of brainwashing that something like The Empire would force on its people, like North Korea or something. The Nazis were masters at self deception too, and we see that self deception and gaslighting all the time in current politics. I still think 20 years is enough time to make everyone 'unbelieve' in the Jedi. You only have to look at how our own 'empires' have taken their political allies and turned them into their enemies and wiped them out, with the average person not even that aware of what really happened. I used to think the 20 year period was also too short until I really thought about it, and it's actually not very far fetched at all when you look at how effective political brainwashing can be over a span of just 5 or 10 years. The Empire would have been repeating this lie for 20 years, with people like Tarkin being one of the worst for it. Tarkin spent that movie denying reality, he sounded like a Soviet Officer at times, completely sure of everything, until his Death Star blew up. He exaggerated almost everything he said in a grandiose manner, so his proclamation about the Jedi religion being ancient does sound right for a political gasbag like him. I think that's very intentional. The Empire is supposed to be run by bigots and political snakes at that point who have internalised every lie The Emperor has told them.

    • @crusherven
      @crusherven 2 года назад +1

      @@MrMisanthrope84 But that's just it--Tarkin doesn't "disbelieve," he just calls it "ancient." Unlike you, I find the Imperial Navy being ignorant about the Force/Jedi extra unbelievable considering their senior officers almost certainly served at a time when they were led by Jedi. Young adults in their 30s would remember the Jedi being wiped out on Coruscant--it wasn't done in a corner; this was basically a regime change. And as far as I remember, we don't see any evidence of propaganda like you describe, even if it could have worked.
      But it's not just Tarkin or people who were part of the Empire. Ordinary people on Tatooine don't believe. This is a frontier planet where Jedi were recognized on sight just 35 some years before, and some random junk dealer even knows whatshisname is trying to influence his mind with the force. This is on a planet about as far from the Jedi seat of power as you can get.
      It makes about as much sense as someone my age being unfamiliar with corded phones. Yeah, I'd be surprised to see one in use, but I wouldn't be like "what is this mythical artifact." Even people who didn't grow up with them will certainly have seen them in media. It's not like they don't have books/movies or whatever in SW.

All of it just went over their heads, so they didn't like it. When I watched The West Side Story in a college class, a lot of people laughed during the "Maria" song. You can't expect people with a low mentality to give a movie with a high mentality a good rating. A lot of those people would give a movie like The Ridiculous 6 a good rating. I think Lucas has been unfairly hammered by the fanbase. Me, I saw Star Wars (not "A New Hope") at the age of 11 when it first came out, and it was life changing. Sci-fi had never looked like this before. The thrill of the assault on the Death Star simply can't be explained to somebody young today who grew up with routinely fabulous special effects.
      By Jedi we'd all grown up and the thing was running out of steam, I think like most people I saw it for completeness. The 11 year old was now on the verge of adulthood. And then kind of moved on. So I have never been a "Star Wars fan" as such, they're just some great movies from my youth.
      I don't think the prequels are the greatest movies ever made (I don't like prequels period, for a start) but the torrent of abuse regarding them seems out of all proportion. Obviously Lucas offended those who consider themselves "fans" for some reason; I suspect it's because he previous to that had monkeyed around with the originals, recutting and adding CGI, and that triggered some kind of "you're raping my childhood" kind of response.
      I enjoyed the Plinkett deconstructions of them but honestly, no movie could survive that kind of critique. You could destroy Citizen Kane by the same approach. It's particularly odd therefore to me that the RedLetterMedia guys didn't savage The Force Awakens; quite the opposite in fact, when that movie is an astonishingly derivative, shallow and empty rehash of Star Wars (or "A New Hope". Whatever).
      Fandom is strange.

      Lucas funded the prequel trilogy with his own studio budget and while they certainly aren't masterpieces they got a bunch of hate from "reviewers" who were Hollywood shills because Lucas didn't follow Hollywood's agenda and trends that make movies successful.

    George Lucas wanted to tell a story of tragedy and redemption. He didn't have a specific audience in mind so anyone could enjoy his films. Today, film makers have target audiences that often alienate other people and usually tend to fail. For an example, Hollywood makes a film with all women cast with strong feminist tones and it flops hard. Then they pin the blame on a whole demographic people that the film wasn't even for. George is right, Hollywood is stupid.

    The most frustrating thing about Hollywood executives is that they never learn. Every iconic franchise they milk to fuel their yacht outings and cocaine supply was created by passionate artists. Yet, time and time again, the people Hollywood likes to hire are their own buddies who don’t give a damn about art. After the hype dies down, no one is left watching the sequels. They all come back to the original trilogy.

      @@i-deni-i5138 the reason the prequels succeeded in the long run is because they continue the story. The hate came from the objectively bad writing of dialogue and because it dove into in-universe politics and was executed in a boring way for many people. In other words, the prequels didnt RUIN the story, they were just flawed and the flaws were magnified because it was the only new star wars in almost 20 years.
      The sequels destroy characters. That's unrecoverable. I know that people said that about Yoda, but they're wrong. He was changed by the war and that makes sense because it was probably the biggest thing in his 900+ year life. Luke however, was DRASTICALLY changed. He went from seeing good in Vader and using holding on to it even when his life and the rebellion were on the line, to seeing darkness inside of his nephew and attempting to murder him.

      I'd argue Lucas is more like Tolkien. I can't think of another filmic world-builder, especially for sci-fi/fantasy, as innovative as Lucas. The originals, the prequels, AND The Clone Wars (and I suppose the EU) established an incredibly diverse galaxy no dissimilar from Middle-Earth. At least by the time of TCW, Lucas remembered that his strength was in the creative force, the consultant/exec-producer, leaving others to write and direct the tv series.

I cant think of anyone that comes close in the movie business that has a mind to build a whole world like Tolkien did with fantasy/middle earth. The scope of the world he built is enormous and so many stories and movies can live in that world.
      Im not having alot of faith in Disney. I think the Star Wars Movies are kind of losing their spirit with Lucas out of it. I hate how the new characters in these films lack so much.
