- In the new series "American Rust," Jeff Daniels plays the police chief of a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town trying to uncoil a murder mystery. It's a character he's played frequently: the guy with the guts to say what no one else will. Daniels talks with correspondent Tracy Smith about his latest role and direction in his career; his father's inspiration for his portrayal of Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird"; and the joy of being a grandfather.

this man is wearing a t shirt, shorts, and crocs for a national television interview.
respect.
He left Hollywood a long time ago for a good reason.
Because he can.
Because he's not a "hollywood" atypical person. He's a good man and we love him here in MI. People see the man, just like what his dad said.
What a boss move.
Oh yeah met him a couple of times at work his dad wife, all down to earth .
Jeff Daniels is one of the best actors around as a human being and performer. Keep doing what you do best.
@Secretary of energy I believe you are deeply wrong.
I waited on Jeff Daniels towards the end of what he called his New York period in the interview, and he was exactly the same humble, intelligent, thoughtful, compassionate, and beautifully moving person you see in the interview. Such a beautiful person and an amazing actor.
The dude is awesome. Period.
Wrong Jeff. That's Jeff Bridges.
@@carlrosenzweig1867 My apologies as well. Just deleted my reply. I appreciate the apology. It's just there are so many people who bomb a simple comment lately.
@@CrankyAsF I was trying to elicit a laugh, but sometimes it's hard to hear "tone" in text. No worries. Cheers.
@@carlrosenzweig1867 Sadly that is true. It's not easy trying to be ironic or humorous on here at time. Cheers to you!
Jeff brought me to tears, I love this guy. He was especially good in Godless a few years back.
through his amazing acting, you can see how special his soul is. that was shown in this interview. man i wish so much happiness and peace for him
He's so damn good. Just gets better and better with age. Loved him so much in Newsroom. But I have personal vivid memories of him in NY in those 10 yrs. he talks about. I worked at Circle Rep in Sheridan Sq. in the 70s when he was there doing "Fifth of July" with Bill Hurt and Swoosie Kurtz, loved that co. and playwright Lanford Wilson's work so much I wanted to work there; and then I did work there in the administrative offices. He was a quiet, hard working, observant, down to earth guy then and he's never changed. I have a particularly vivid mental image of him standing on the subway exit island in the middle of Sheridan Sq., arms crossed, tee-shirted, buff biceps, totally calm in the middle of the hustle-bustle, just people watching (character study?) One of my favorite actors working today.
You'd be surprised how down-to-earth most celebrities are. Sure, it's easy to write off the whole lot as narcissistic cream puffs. Yet reading your personal account of Mr. Daniels reaffirms my faith in humanity. Just good hearted folks getting by in life with their God given talents. Let the money and recognition come afterwards. If you can move one person a day, that's fulfillment!
Respect!
Edit: Just picked up the first two seasons of “ The Newsroom” from my library because of this interview. Never have I ever paid for HBO. ☮️ on 🌍
He will be known as one of America's greatest actor's. Loved him in newsroom!! What a rich man! And I'm not talking currency.
I can tell.
He is fn awesome.
He got me with the Dad story. Seems like truly genuine guy. thanx for the interview.
How beautiful for him to have such a lovely father. What a wonderful man.
Honoring your father is one of the best thing one can do, my father was an amazing effect on my life ❤
Underrated actor, man with heart....
Jeff Daniels could very well be the anti-Hollywood actor.... not in any way egotistical or acting bigger-than-thou. The best kind of Entertainer.
#CBSSundayMorning #TheBestEntertainer
Jeff Daniels is an American Icon (yes, upper case i). He represents everything that is good and worth pursuing in this country. His simplicity, humility and natural honesty are exactly the attributes we all need to embrace and emulate in order to find and strengthen the heart and soul of this country.
Jeff is an American Icon, a star, a sex symbol, a father, a king, a grandfather, and an angel 😇
Having recently had my Dad pass on, Jeff, “you had me” too.😢
Love him in everything he's done.
I miss my father as well Mr. Daniels.
You didn't blow Newsroom. It was a great show and you were amazing.
so proud to share my state with this lovely man. i have loved him forever and now even more for sharing the love for his dad. i am blessed to say i had a wonderful dad too and i miss him every day. he’s watching, Jeff, just behind the curtain.💖🥰
What a wonderful human being…. Just normal…
❓
And beautiful too!
@@LL-lj1kq Normal no and that's a good thing. Because normal now a days ISN'T NORMAL...BAD has become GOOD...GOOD has become irrelevant...lies have become truth...and sanity is irrelevant and the insane are normal...what a horrid world...get me out of it.
If it weren’t for the movies, Dumb & Dumber, 101 Dalmatians ‘96 (fools still aren’t born, Pongo), and Because of Winn-Dixie, I wouldn’t have had the great opportunity to know an actor like Jeff Daniels.
I had to google Winn-Dixie. I thought maybe he made a really good commercial for them or something. Its a movie I never heard of...I gotta watch it.
LOVED The Newsroom! And, love Jeff Daniels. Condolences to you Jeff on the death of your father. Would that we all had such a father.
And such a boyfriend! Jeff must be somebody's baby, like Jackson Browne sang in his song.
I agree , years , miles on life make you understand . We are fortunate , go do good things for all of us.
He is a great underrated actor!! Hands down!! He never has given a bad performance!
He is a treasure...they don't make them like JEFF...two great jeffs DANIEL and BRIDGES...I was crying when he was talking about dad...crying because I didn't have that relationship. Good for Jeff.
Jeff Daniels is a versatile actor I have enjoyed for many years.
Thank goodness for Jeff Daniels. We need more role models like him.
Famous Hollywood types and musicians that don't stray from their roots and even move back to their hometowns (Jeff Daniels, John Mellencamp for example) are usually that way because they are mentally grounded and secure in themselves, and have a love of home, friends and family. Daniels and Mellencamp have always spoken well of the Midwest and not made fun of us in "Flyover" country. For that I thank them.
Can NOT wait for October 14 of this year 2021 to see him on Broadway. I am seating on row B from stage, center.
Your so lucky to have ticket's, i live in England & would never in a million year's be able to see this wonderful play starring this great stage actor, enjoy every minute
one of the best actors out there. Young actors/artists, you have a lot to learn from this guy.
So glad I share Michigan with this great actor!
This was a real treat. I missed him on Broadway the first time. I won't the second time...
Lovely man, incredible actor, beautiful segment.
Misses his Dad.
I understand Sir D.
Me too.
It wounds me seeing Jeff Daniels cry.....This gentleman isn't even my father.....and I feel terribly for him.
That's what you call being authentic....and real.
@@lindyfrank5342 That's what makes him so beautiful!!!!!!!
So kind & loving 🥰 I have enjoyed watching him through the years & hope to see much more.
What a beautiful human being🙏🦋
I had fallen "in love" with Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain when watching Ken Burns' "The Civil War" and watched in awe a few years later as Jeff Daniels brought him back to life in "Gettysburg," just as amazing I expected Colonel Chamberlain to be.
My favorite actor. I’ll spring for a few months of Showtime to see his new series.
One of my favorite actor ever.. He's such a kind and beautiful soul. IMO he's up there with Denzel Washington. I hope that we get to see more of him in the future.
God Bless you, Jeff Daniels. May your days be bright & your night's be restful.
What a great man
“I kinda Know what I’m doing now”. Words from a rare human being, actor, family guy. Cheers Jeff Daniels, you give me strength, inspiration and motive to continue searching for the truth.
One of my favorite actors
Something Wild is one of the most underrated movies of the 80s
That film has a cult following which means is literally NOT underrated. 😂
6:30 - 7:00
Reminds me of this.
"You'll still be the only thing I ever needed you to be, my son." - Duke Leto Atreides
This man is an inspiration!!!
I'll never forget him in "Speed"
"Oh look frost" lmfao one of the most underrated lines ever LOL
A lovely man enjoying his life. Well done, Mr. Daniels.
I love him! I know I watched the series, Newsroom a half dozen times. He got me interested in the news!
You are your dad now, Jeff. He lives on through you. Of course he wouldn't miss a single frame of his son's life. Hang in there, dad is so proud of you. :)
He lives in you, like the Lion King song and Diana Ross song states :)
I still catch chills 31 years later on his role in Arachnophobia.
Thank you for this. I've loved you~Jeff, ever since Terms of Endearment (1983) Your character "Flap" was a philanderer but did love his family. 😘
So incredibly insanely talented!!
I loved him (them) in "The Purple Rose of Cairo".
Hi
Very talented actor, actor, ACTOR!!!!!!!!
I so love that he did this interview in crocs.
What a wonderful story, Jeff Daniels
Hello how are you doing
Jeff, If you are reading this what you said about your dad sure makes me think of my dad. At 91 he's still here and I'm grateful for that. I've been to your Purple Rose Theater before to look inside and saw your play, A Vast Difference at the GEM many years ago. Keep making MI proud. :) I look forward to having a coffee with you someday (and I don't even like coffee).
I love Jeff...boy do I love this guy
Loved Jeff in my favorite movie TERMS of ENDEARMENT
Dude. U have such love for your Dad. Its shows so obviously as u tear up and the voice breaks. Man, i get it. Im scared to lose my mom as my Dad died when i was 14. I wish i knew him. I do know my wonderful mom and she is my best friend. I will be DEVASTATED and crushed when my mom goes to heaven. She is 79 and we hang out everyday. I like spending every moment doing stuff and gaining courage for the inevitable. Death is always sure. And ill be very sad to be without Mom to hug and listen to.
To see yourself walk the hard path makes me sincerely appreciative of your truth and a long labor of love i see in your story. Thankyou
Love Jeff Daniels!
Never was a fan of his Comedy, but when he was in Newsroom,i just enjoyed his series roles more. For those who have not seen Newsroom.Do watch, what a great series. To bad it ended so soon. Will be glad to see the a new series on showtime.Stay safe everyone.☮
Newsroom was no failure in my book! LOVED IT.
You are a hero to me. Truly. What I’d give to just sit and talk...with you.
He looks EXACTLY like Eric Thompson from Coming Home In The Dark. Now that's a good movie everyone should see.
What a treasure of an artist. :)
Jeff Daniels: it does not matter that he never saw you as Atticus, because he always saw you as you. ❤
60's..KEEP IT UP!!
a true icon american legend
The message, Like his father said, proud of the person he is, not just about what he has done in his carreer. 🙌. The value of principles.
Of course Jeff is busier in his sixties than ever before!
He is a GREAT actor. ❤
Performs brilliantly in whatever part he plays.
There aren't too many coming up behind him that are as good as Jeff is.
His new show's premise reminds me of 'Mare of Easttown.'
His role in Gettysburg,just great.
He’s not lying about the humidity.
The man is an artist.
Neil Young, the very creative (in many deep ways), musician, has said to embrace failure. For one ever expected him to succeed at any of his "crazy dreams"! That way one has to nothing to lose , lol! To find "life", one has to risk! If one's "vison quest", is just a little bit "insane", then one knows that it's worth "pursuing". Lol.
What a beautiful soul !
I'm not ashamed to say I love this man. Can I say my grandmother was my Atticus? Every strong decent thing I do is for her.
Love the love for your dad. My heart hurts.
Clearly a happy guy.
thank you Jeff Daniels. sure wish 50% of America would listen to "We are not the Greatest." I have fought for it I have spet most of my life keeping the equipment running for Americans to keep it great. They can not.
Hats off to you sir.
Jeff Daniels is the best!!!! I am from Michigan too!
This was great to see. He’s a good soul
Keep going JD
I love this story thank you - I am a fan of Daniels
Love Jeff, great actor & man, wonderful interview. Thank you
I love this guy. a dose of sanity
Newsroom was a fantastic show. Please come back and give us one more season!
He was there Jeff, he was there. Our loved ones who physically left this planet are more subtle than you would think they would be. You only need to pay attention to the littlest things. A song that pops up in your head, something you see that you know he liked, a thought you have that reminds you of him, or a smell. The smell of freshly mowed grass is just one way I know my Dad is near me. Of course we don't have freshly mowed grass year round here in Michigan as you know, but it's a million other little things. My Dad has been gone 27 years, and my Mom 26 years ago. They don't really die Jeff, none of us do... we just change form. Pay attention. 💞
I'm not religious either, but I do know that mine are with me. I miss watching Sunday Morning with my Mom.
Brilliant actor and American gentleman.
Hey
One of my favorite actors.
Gettysburg is one of the best movies every made. Went and saw it in the theater when it came out!
Awesome guy! Great interview!
WonderFULL Person. GREAT actor.
" Got me "
