Conan is right. Candy’s best stuff was on SCTV. But Splash still holds up. He makes me laugh out loud. Even his scene in Nat’l Lampoons Vaca. The best 😂
Conan didn't say Candy's best stuff was on SCTV, he said he knew Candy most from growing up watching him on SCTV. Candy's talent continued to grow and improve well into his adult years, including breaking into dramatic roles like PT&A, Only The Lonely and JFK.
His character in Vacation was Paul Fistinyourface from SCTV, only less aggressive and violent. Ramis loved the character and asked Candy to reprise it.
I still think of John and what could have been if he had survived and recouperated from the heart attack. The man absolutely sharp in his comedic timing. I think those two have a tv show and just conversing would have been the funniest thing ever.
There are a handful of celebrity deaths that I and quite a lot of people felt more viscerally than most. I think for the fondness we collectively experienced from their work, the struggles they endured and hearing that they were indeed good people. John Candy is in that echelon. For me it also includes Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, and Robin Williams.
I hope that some of Martin Shorts audio tapes are included in the documentary. A treasure trove of the parties held by the cast of SCTV and The Second City (Toronto). The parties were called The Services. I think that was the name. Often, when driving to downtown Toronto for work, I would see JC at his house on Avenue Road (look it up, yes it is the name of the street) on the front veranda with his feet up on the railing and smoking a cigar. The doc will be a must watch. Martin Scorsese is making a doc on SCTV. Amazing.

I was an employee at Richards on Richards, a popular famous Vancouver hot spot back in the late 1980s. I remember seeing John Candy with Wayne Gretzky side by side and I as many in the club were transfixed. This I believe was sometime before their purchase of the Toronto Argonauts. I had seen hundreds of celebrities pass through club but I'll never forget seeing Candy and Gretzky together. Candy as well as Gretzky frequented the club on many separate occasions. One time Candy got up on stage and sang with a band. Just whooping it up with the crowd and being his jovial self. I can't believe he was only in his mid thirties or late thirties at that time. The passing of John Candy and untimely demise of Phil Hartman were two of the greats that were a gut punch to me. Too soon.

1:20 "John Candy asked me what I was thinking of doing and I said I might like to try comedy, and he looked right through me! Into my eyes! And he said, "Kid? You don't TRY comedy! You do it because you have to." This is for Conan like when Yoda says to Luke, "do or do not. there is no try!" I so get that.
John Candy was just…amazing! He is such a huge part of my childhood. Side note: he needs more props for Wagons East. Such a great, under appreciated movie.
John Candy died in, what...1994? It feels like yesterday because of how present he still is in our world and because I miss him so. Johnny LaRue was my favorite SCTV character and never failed to send me reeling with laughter.
Candy's Johnny LaRue still cracks me up. His impressions of Orson Welles is spot on. Even though I knew who Orson Welles was when I was younger, I didn't know he was that difficult. So when those Orson Welles clips hit the internet back in the day, I thought of John Candy
I can't forget a couple SCTV sketches that featured John Candy. One was "Roy's Food Repair" ("I'll drop it in liquid nitrogen, take it out back and sand-blast it") and "Pepi Longsocks". ("Look at me! I'm a potato!").
Seriously, there are moments where Colin will say a certain word or maybe a grouping of words and it'll sound exactly like his dad. It's happening more as he gets older.
I noticed this too. Normally his voice is deeper, but at certain times, he raises it and it sounds like his dad. He should star in a Tom Hanks documentary.
It's more than just the voice. There are things in the timing and inflections that make it obvious that this is a guy who spent his childhood sitting on the couch watching movies next to Tom Hanks.
Thanks to Ryan Reynolds, I now think of John Candy every Halloween, which was his birthday. 2020 would have been his 70th and Ryan made a lovely compilation of John Candy’s funniest movie moments to the tune of “Every Time You Go Away” by Paul Young. You can find it on Ryan’s RUclips channel with the title “Happy Candy Day”. I just rewatched it yesterday.
My aunt’s birthday, too. She would have been 83 yesterday. #fuckcancer She always had this bemused smirk, and could put dad in his place with one word. 😂
I almost pissed myself over Conan's yellowbelly story. I can just visualize John doing that. LMAO!!!! Sad he was taken so young but what JOY he left behind for us. One of the all-time greats.
I'd love a My Weekend With Marilyn style dramedy flick about Conan meeting John Candy in college and the effect of meeting and gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and your idol.
I miss his laugh. The great thing about the Internet is that I grew up a little too late and an ocean away to see prime SCTV. But now it's all online to enjoy forever
"You don't try comedy: you do it because you have to." Reminds me of Fern Brady, a Scottish comedian who was recently diagnosed as autistic and has fully incorporated it into her newest act (Autistic Bikini Queen). She says she could not do any other job. Other jobs aren't accessible to her / won't accommodate her. I bet that a lot of comedians are neurodivergent. Tons have anxiety and are open about it. A few have diagnosed ADHD, but I bet many, many more have it and are undiagnosed. It makes me happy as an ND person. I struggled to succeed in work and life (and balancing both) when I was younger because I chose a formal career path. Not something flexible and entertaining like comedy. I hope autistic kids and ADHDers and anxious kids today know that they have options in creative fields, even if they "fail" in traditional education and work.
My earliest memory of John Candy was on SCTV..... Mrs. Falbo's Tiny Town. The Letter P. John was Mrs. Falbo's side kick, and they visited a Prison. When they sang Folsom Prison Blues to the inmates I was hooked !!! You can see it here on You Tube. TOO FUNNY.
John could definitely do drama. The scene in cool runnings when he asks the olympic committee not to blame his guys for the mistakes he made was a great dramatic scene
Great interview Conan. John Candy was one of a kind, very talented funny guy. I think he was the best comedic actor that came out of his generation other than Robin Williams. Colin Hanks was great in that excellent series The Offer. Godfather producer Al Ruddy's story was really interesting. This is great to see Colin is producing a John Candy doc.
John Candy inspired me to go into food repair. Now I own over 400 food repair shops throughout the heartland specializing multiple repairs from cakes to spare ribs and now restaurant foods even total rebuilds of KFC famous bowls
I had a friend who was neighbors with John Candy in Canada in the 80's. The property line was very large and very far away. They said on some harsh winter nights he would come over, on foot, to make the "Can I borrow a cupnof sugar?" Joke.

I'm only 42, but I miss John candy every single day.
John Candy as Pattoo , from FAN-TASSS-SEE Island. " I know what your Fantasy is boss...." - " Shut up Pattoo, you little idiot"....
"I am empowering myself to talk about my body." LOL! Go Conan! Amen! LOL!
John Candy died in, what...1994?
It feels like yesterday because of how present he still is in our world and because I miss him so.
Johnny LaRue was my favorite SCTV character and never failed to send me reeling with laughter.
I loved John Candy... and i really miss him as a comedian. I wished I had a chance to meet him.
I have fond memories of watching Uncle Buck as a kid with my brother and sister. John Candy was a national treasure.
I like that John Candy is Conan’s Yoda, he hit him with the “do or do not, there is no try.”
Adore John candy ❤
Thanks to Ryan Reynolds, I now think of John Candy every Halloween, which was his birthday. 2020 would have been his 70th and Ryan made a lovely compilation of John Candy’s funniest movie moments to the tune of “Every Time You Go Away” by Paul Young. You can find it on Ryan’s RUclips channel with the title “Happy Candy Day”. I just rewatched it yesterday.
My aunt’s birthday, too. She would have been 83 yesterday. #fuckcancer
She always had this bemused smirk, and could put dad in his place with one word. 😂
...you mean to tell me he was a Halloween Candy?
I love and miss John Candy he was a very funny man who did some great movies
John Candy's laugh always warms my heart.
Legendary . So special they are working on a documentary for him
😂🤣🤣 That “Yellowbelly” scene Conan describes. ❤🥰🤣🤣 Oh Dear Heart John Candy!
Oh I really like this!! 👍 All of you are a great mix! 🥰
I almost pissed myself over Conan's yellowbelly story. I can just visualize John doing that. LMAO!!!! Sad he was taken so young but what JOY he left behind for us. One of the all-time greats.
And the Yellobelly sketch featured Catherine O'Hara, and the song was the Ballad of Davy Crockett from Disney.
I have to find this sketch now! Catherine O'Hara was my hero 😍
Edit: found it! ruclips.net/video/Nf9PTd6kxWQ/видео.html
I can't wait to see Colin's documentary. I too grew up watching Candy and those other comedic geniuses on SCTV.
My soul is somewhere between John Candy in Uncle Buck and Sinbad in Houseguest. God im glad for every bit of influence Mr. Candy gave nme.
Hanks is looking good. He definitely inherited alot from his dad, genetically speaking. Love and miss you John candy
SCTV was far and away the funniest sketch comedy ever. Candy as Johnny Larue, Dr. Braino and Mayor Tommy Shanks was hilarious as was everything else.
4:22 Matt catching the Schlanksy that rubbed off on Conan
John Candy was such a great actor and human being.
John’s bit in Tom Hank’s Volunteers is great
"Do or do not, there is no try."
"You don't try comedy: you do it because you have to."
Reminds me of Fern Brady, a Scottish comedian who was recently diagnosed as autistic and has fully incorporated it into her newest act (Autistic Bikini Queen).
READY FOR A NEW CONAN TV SHOW!! 🤟
Rookie of the Year is my 7yr old son's favorite movie. He watches every night. Love seeing Mr Candy 🍭 as the announcer.
TOO FUNNY.
That must have been so cool showing John Candy around.
John could definitely do drama. The scene in cool runnings when he asks the olympic committee not to blame his guys for the mistakes he made was a great dramatic scene
he did in JFK
@@Cee2k true
Mini Hanks not so mini anymore. Seems like a good dude. Very pleased he's doing a doc about John. I loved that guy.
That comedy sketch of John Candy playing yellow belly and shooting those two females in the back be done today, that was a hell of a funny scene.😄
I miss John Candy :(
I'm glad his legacy lives on, he was on among my favourite actors, next to Tom Hanks and Robin Williams.
I had a friend who was neighbors with John Candy in Canada in the 80's. The property line was very large and very far away. They said on some harsh winter nights he would come over, on foot, to make the "Can I borrow a cupnof sugar?" Joke.
