      Soaking time is not important. The goal is to rinse off that starchy liquid until water flows clear from the strainer. Then you can dry them.

    • @Jimmyjuice88
      @Jimmyjuice88  3 месяца назад

      The oil and the 5 min wait keep the potatoes from sticking.

  • @magikdust2095
    @magikdust2095 2 года назад +6

    This does look good. I watched this video, although I already knew how to make hashbrowns. If you put a little potato starch in them, they'll get crisper, I found that out with my own hashbrowns. I do have a question about one of the things you did in the video. In the video, you put the oil in with the grated potato, before you put it into the hot pan. I'm wondering why you did that, instead of putting it in the pan? I'm wondering because I have learned in the past that if you put things you are frying into cold oil, they will absorb alot of the oil, but if you put things into hot oil, they won't absorb nearly as much of it. But, maybe there's a reason you did it that way...

    • @chaoticcanyon2081
      @chaoticcanyon2081 2 года назад +5

      I'm no chef, but I believe you are correct. Putting food into very hot oil creates a steaming effect inside and around the potato shreds, which is why you put the lid on to help it cook. Otherwise, like you pointed out, cold oil is absorbed and makes the food greasy. Instead, add some butter to the pan with the hot oil before the potatoes.

    • @SuperLittleTyke
      @SuperLittleTyke 3 месяца назад

      I do use a salad spinner to dry potato chips (what Americans call fries), but for shredded potato for hash browns I squeeze the water out through a conical stainless steel strainer, pushing down on the shreds with a heavy cooking spoon.

    Why would you want to wash out the starch from the grated potatoes?

    • @SuperLittleTyke
      @SuperLittleTyke 3 месяца назад

      Always get rid of the starch before frying potatoes! If I make fries at home, I put the fries (raw potato) in a bowl of cold water and leave for 30 minutes before rinsing and drying, then frying. That way you get much nicer fries.
