Ingredients
2 large potato’s
1/2 tsp Onion powder
Salt & pepper
1/2 tsp Garlic powder
2 tbsp All purpose flour
1/4 cup Grated cheddar cheese
Method
Grate potato’s using a box grater. Slip potato’s into a bowl of cold water and mix to get rid of starch. Place potato’s into a bowl lined with a cloth to dry. Add oil to a pan on medium high heat and fry for 4-5 mins. Let potato’s cool and add spices. Then add all purpose flour and cheddar cheese; mix until combined.
Preheat some oil over medium high heat. Mould your mixture into a hash brown shape and place into preheated frying pan. Flip over once golden brown. Once they are golden brown from both sides, remove from heat and place on a paper towel to soak up excess oil. All done!
Thought I’d type out the recipe for anyone cooking in real time :) thank you to the creator for this amazing recipe!
Idk if you’ll see this but can you substitute the cheese for any other type? I’m just trying to be cautious with the taste
Is there a substitute for the onion powder?

I made this and it was so good🤤 It tasted like a fast food hashbrown! I used cornstarch instead of flour and it turned out crispier than if using flour. I liked this so much I made and froze a big batch so I can just take it out and fry it.
How much corn starch did you use? I'm going to make this in the morning.
Lol mmm I’m gonna make and freeze them too!
Thank u for the tip.to use cornstarch..I'm literally making them rn
That defeats the purpose of the wash, i used my fine grater.
How much corn starch?
Flour? I've never used flour. I've seen numerous videos for hash browns, and my hash browns have always been flat. I've wanted to be able to shape hash browns into patties. Now, I know The SECRET. Will be using this recipe next weekend. Thank you for this video.
If you substitute the flour with a beaten egg the hash brown will be fluffy, loose but crispy and taste great.
@@ceciliatang9008 i hope your not trolling..
@@crossed7971 Ha ha! You still remembered my comment! I still insist that the flour should be substituted by eggs. Eggs beaten until frothy will even make the hash more fluffy. Whereas flour will make it dense and solid.
@@ceciliatang9008 what does frothy mean ?
Also i wont get the notification until you like my comment idk RUclips's acting weird it started in 2018
Thank you for this simple and easy to follow video! Made this right away.
Instead of using powders like in the video, since we had the ingredients available I cooked them fresh. I fried the grated potatoes with minced onions and garlic (if someone wanted to try and were wondering the order they went in the pan: garlic, onions then potatoes). Let it cool, salt and pepper to taste, flour and cheese to bind (just like in the video) and viola!
Turned out a great and crispy meal :) I got to bond and make it with my 5y/o too who was craving for hash browns. Can't thank you enough!
I've never been able to make hash browns. I gave up on trying years ago. Then I saw this video and followed every step, and I made the best hash browns ever! Thank you.
Finally a straightforward recipe I can make before work ! Instead of a bunch of steps that will take me 3 hours to make 🙄.
Had an impulse buy; saw a bag of potatoes financially discounted for having a few blemishes, bought em and wanted to make hashbrowns. Glad I found your recipe, simply delicious ♡
Hi Kathryn. I'm sure you will enjoy the recipe. Please let us know. Take care and stay safe.
Delicious! I made this for my 17 year old son on Easter morning as a special treat. I do not normally like hash browns but these were amazing! Definitely make again.

Just made this recipe for the family, these were really good! I added some southern soul food spice and Colby cheese for a southern fried flavor. Came out golden crispy on the outside and cheesy and tender on the inside. Thanks!

add a grated onion (treat it the same as the potato) to it for extra flavour instead of powder.
Aren't those potato pancakes with the onion grown in it I don't know this way my grandma used to make them can you put jelly applesauce sour cream or whatever you want but if you are hashbrowns maybe just a little onion powder is good
Onion flavor is yummy 😋 when we add it to food 🥘
a whole onion? or?
Thank you for the tip....I dont have onion powder and was thinking what to do with it!!!!....I will try it !
Along with the onion I would like to add some cabbage...
You Sir are a genius! God bless you. I have been trying for YEARS to make harsh browns, watching one RUclips tutorial after the other...and ALWAYS a disappointment... Until now....WOW!!!
Hi Erica. That's wonderful. A real compliment. Hope you watch and enjoy many more videos and recipes. Keep cooking my friend.
My whole life I've just been grating the potatoes and throwing them straight into the pan and they've always either been burnt or soft and gooey. Thank you for enlightening me.
Noah Daye that’s how my father made them while growing up, he always burnt them to a crisp and I choked them down with a lot of catchup, I’ve avoided making hash browns due to never learning properly but today that all changed,
this is my first attempt to cook a hash brown hope it works 😋 you will certainly hear from me again how it turned out!!
Thank you!
You are so welcome.
And it’s the best hash brown I’ve ever tasted in my life
I made this this morning and it turned out great!
Ive been struggling with hashbrowns for years but it finally worked.
I used the food processor instead of grating the potatoes by hand and squeezed them in my hands instead of using a cloth cuz I don’t have one.
Thank you 🥰
hi will the food processor do the same job as a grater?
zahra djohari it depends on how much you pulse it for, first time i did it too much ended up like soup second time did it less turned out great, but both batches made excellent hash browns so go for it
Hi, do check out my version of hashbrown too!
You don't need to get rid of the starch, just the excess water. So don't put them in water and add more of what you're trying to get rid of + don't soak out the starch and then use more cornflour or potato starch to replace what you just threw down the sink! Besides, you're just adding to the workload and more dishes to wash. Squeeze the freshly grated potato in a teatowel, coat all very, VERY lightly with vegetable oil, season/ spice if you want, and microwave for 1 minute. Check if the potato grates 'just' adhere to each other. If not, zap again in not more than 20 second bursts until they do. Even 2kg of spuds pre-grating, will only need zapping for 1-2 minutes total. Spread them out in your dish, allow to cool to room temp, then mix in the small amount of starch as above, even 1 kg needs only around 5-7 grams. Form them and deep fry straight away, no need to fridge or freeze. Why?...cos they have enough starch! Bon zapetite!! 😅
PS: Using potato starch powder instead of cornflour (Yanks say cornstarch), will give a lot more crunch. Beware though, if you go overboard, you'll get all crunch and no delicious, fluffy potato inside. 🥳
PPS: Deepfry at 180c in fresh vegetable oil or vege oil that has only cooked potatoes. Olive oil is too strong in flavor, use cheap vegetable oil. (Which is in fact seed oil and not good for us, in the early 20th century it was created as cheap and plentiful oil to use in machinery!)
Just made these and wanted to THANK YOU SO MUCH, they’re absolutely beautiful. Thanks for the recipe!
You must be psychic! I am making breakfast for dinner and was going to look up a new hash brown recipe! 👍
LOL. Great. Hope you try them and enjoy.
I just got a cookbook and the first recipe in it is your hash browns! You earned a new subscriber
Hi. Thanks so much and welcome to the channel. What cookbook was that? Hope you try many recipes.
Tip: If you want to grate fast and avoid grating your fingers then simply get a hand towel or food-safe cloth and grasp the thing you want to grate using the towel or cloth. Also if you rinse the grater in boiling water it seems to grate much faster and easier.
Ty for the tips❤

i still make 24 hashbrown per week. i use this method i make them in the evening and freeze them. fry them up before work every morning. might be my favorite recipe. thanks to u cookNshare. youre makin a difference in ppl like me life.
Fantastic. So glad you are enjoying them. I know they are good. Thanks for the comment and keep cooking.
Wow, that looks really good and I'm sure it's fresher than the store bought. I was surprised you didn't need an egg to bind it, but it worked all the
same :)
Same here.
People use egg to bind beef burgers and it makes it yucky.
Im guessing the cheese is the binding agent to the pre cooked warm potato.
Potato not part cooked and warm = mess
No cheese = mess
Great recipe!
Love how you add the flour and seasonings and shape them!
Thank you so much!

i'm a terrible cooker. what can go wrong at this recipe?
it's unbelievable how easy is to cook and people still buy it from the shop! (says me, before starting)
im a mediocre cook and my hashbrowns didnt even cook *:(*
@@crossed7971 mine cooked, but I had to scare them before. I'm still not sure what ingredient makes them stay together, so I simply applied pure, brute force on my hash browns :D It took much longer than expected, though.
@@crossed7971 sigh, pat pat pat
Lol what happened was i didnt use enough flour or shape them i just put it in there after i grated them
Adding an egg also helped greatly
I think the temperature of the pan & oil is key. A lot of people try and heat the pan too fast by cranking it up to max and then having to adjust later. It's better to start with the right heat, and be patient. Give the pan enough time to get there on its own.
I've never heard of adding flour. But it looks like it really makes a difference. Thanks.
I just made theese, definitely a recipe I'll keep in my nogin. I accidentally made them too thick but they're still very very good! Thank you Dave 💛💛💛

im crying, you are the dad i never had :)
I made this today....my family loved it! Thank you so much for sharing💛
People :easy
Me: IDK why this is so hard
Did you try to skip the step where you clean the potato and get the starch out ? Only trouble i had with this recipe is when i did this as i was in a hurry and it turned out really sticky and hard to make into a patty. Also there's a few cooking tools you can buy that are really cheap and help a lot into making this, like the vegetable chopper, i just put the potato inside and it turns it into finely cut pieces, it's a lot better than gratting them and it saves a lot of time too (plus there's no chance for you to actually harm yourself like i used to with the box gratter).
Its hard when youre lazy to follow instructions
Not that hard if you know how to follow
Way tooo hard
I couldn’t do it as well. The potato shape broke in the pan. I did not add cheese though

I made these today morning for my mom and they turned out the best hash browns ever made on earth 😍😍😍🤍!! Thank you so much for the recipe !
Hi Layan. Great. So happy it turned out well for you. Keep cooking.
This is the best recipe so far! The same recipe as my mum made for her ‘potato pancakes’ - these she made for our tea in the 60s/70s (money was tight) we absolutely loved them and to us they were a treat. Mum wouldn’t have put cheese in, or garlic - as kids we’d probably never seen a clove of garlic- she may have added it nowadays! Thank you. I’m just looking for the recipe.
Wonderful! So glad you enjoyed.
Hi Dave, these hash browns look incredibly good! We've just added them to our site and will be sending them out in our newsletter :)
Hey Joanne. Thanks so much. They are really good. Hope everybody over at the WHOot enjoys them.
Miammmm c est delicieux .😍❤💓💔💕
This is as simple as making hash potatoes look very delicious. Thanks
You're so welcome. Hope you try it.
I am glad to see that I was able to figure out on my own that the grated potatoes MUST have the starch and water removed from them. I prefer to lay the hash browns flat on a cutting board, then gently run cold water over them and mash them down with my hand to get rid of the starch and water. I add onion powder, but no garlic. I prefer my hash browns flatter and thinner, so they always end up nice and crispy. And yes, I do at times add cheddar cheese. But I may try this method as well.
That joke tho😂😂
I tried this last night. The only thing I forgot to do is put more oil in the pan, but it still tasted good. It beats regular hash browns.
There a so many different types of hash browns on RUclips but nothing beats this one in taste and texture. No hassle very simple and easy to follow thanks for sharing
2:50 an inch or two of oil? Seemed like you added way less

Thank you for this! I was trying to look for a recipe that is egg-free.
There are quite a few egg replacers out there these days. They usually come in a box in the baking section of your average grocery store and cost about $4-$6, and can be used to replace about 50 eggs.
Did the recipe twice, but I tried butter the second time instead of oil. Made it a lot better!
Hi. Sure. That works well.
