- Learn how to make crispy hashbrowns just like you get at a diner! These are super simple and only require a real potato, butter, oil and a technique. That's it. Enjoy!
For one serving of hash browns:
1 (4-5 ounce or 110-140 grams) russet potato
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1/2 Tbsp butter or margarine
Wash and peel the potato. Grate or shred on a box grater or food processor. Do so into a bowl of water to prevent oxidation. Drain and rinse until water runs clear. Spread shredded potato out onto paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Pat dry and let air dry for 5-10 minutes. In a small frying pan, add oil and butter. Heat over medium-medium high heat. When butter solids start to brown, add shredded potatoes. Cover with a lid and cook for 5 minutes without lifting the lid. When time is up, remove lid, season with salt and pepper and flip. Continue cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes. Makes 1 serving of hashbrowns. Enjoy!

I don’t get how something so simple can taste so good. I went to America about 6 months ago and most of my breakfasts were hash brown and omelette, I loved it.
Fried potatoes are just great all around
it's the fat.
Don'tHateMe CauseYou'reWrong same? No. Good? Maybe. There is always a difference in flavor when you use other stuff. Don’t try to convert people to vegan stuff by telling them “it taste the same”. Most people who like meat and animal products will definitely be able to tell a difference and that will turn them off more times than not. It’s okay for something to taste different as long as it’s good. You have to be honest and not be that salesperson who will say anything to get people to buy into things. Now if it just plain out taste bad, it’s a lost cause lol
It's the butter, the French have known this secret for a long time, butter isn't actually as bad as people think as long is it's real butter and not processesed
NakIf you clarify it you remove most of the dairy solids, which are the unhealthy part. Or just buy ghee.
It’s 4 am and I craved hash browns outta no where so thank you

me at 1 am right now
02h08 right now. There's a potato in the fridge BEGGING me to turn it into a hash brown...
Funny it's 4:17am and I had the same craving xD
Me Rn! 4:44am Nd I’m here for it🤤👌🏽
I too thank you sir!!!!! I am a 72 yr old great grandmother and until I found your video have never been able to make hash browns correctly....FINALLY!!! I am a SUCCESS....and it's all because of you!!!! Along with Tekking101, I was not using the correct amount of oil and butter! Plus, I did not rinse them at all! THANKS FOR SHOWING US ALL!!!!!!!
To be fair to yourself, potatoes have no business being so damn complicated to cook perfectly! I make them all the time and occasionally, you just get a crappy potato 🤷🏽♂️ The starch levels, hydration, and internal consistency vary from potato to potato so trying the same thing every time doesn’t even always make the perfect hash brown, and then I get pissed off and throw them out the window so kudos to you for nailing it
Well I feel better now, I’ve been miserably failing at hahaha my entire life and just thought that for some incredibly insane reason I can roast my own homey coffee bake like a rockstar and so-so cook but the two most simple things to make hashbrowns and not burned bacon is an absolute epic failure (which is coincidentally also how I came to know I stress out my next door neighbors (no joke the fire department) with each attempt!!!!! It’s so embarrassing!!!! Although….. the uniformed firefighter….. nope nope a lady isn’t supposed to air such things publicly lol…
In the restaurant I work in, they use boiled potatoes for quick cooking. They do not squeeze any water out. They do not cut into water. They are shredded in several large containers the day before. Thrown on the grill atop a huge spoon of bacon grease. They are fabulous!!!
Sounds worth trying also, do they refrigerate the whole boiled potatoes after cooking and do they keep the shredded potatoes in fridge until they are cooked? Thanks! (:

Hi can I check so I parboil the whole potato then grate it...?

I just cooked breakfast for me and my wife to include preparing hash browns your way. The hash browns were a hit! And now my wife thinks I am a hit, thanks to you!

Um, if it took that for her to think you're a hit, something else needs addressing in the relationship. Still, glad this recipe helped in some way - just beware, food doesn't fix everything!
I’ve been making hash brown for awhile and I did NOT know the secret was making sure to deplete the water out of the potatoes both before cooking and while cooking, you covered all the troubled areas I’ve been making in the past. THANK YOU
another way to remove the water is to put the wet shredded potatoes in a potato ricer and squeeze all the water out that way.
Better late than never!
Yeah I made the same mistake. And it just wouldn't stick together!
Bro, I am a 17 years old Moroccan girl that never tasted hash brown or even heard of it until I saw a short video about the American breakfast a while ago and I was like "I WANT THIS" and I found your video thank u so much! I will try it tomorrow and say my results since its 3 am now lol
How was it
@@ranishamim1752 my first try was awful but the second time was really good after knowing the right moment to flip it and when to stop
For some reason this makes me so happy!!! I wish I knew of a Moroccan breakfast now so I could make that here in America!!!! Any suggestions??
I'm doing your hash browns while quarantining for COV-19 and just want to say thank you for sharing. Made my morning. Stay safe!

YES! Your sir are my savior. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to make these the same way as in a diner and just failed every time. I honestly just wasn't using enough oil and butter and they would constantly stick to the pan and just end up burnt. Thanks so much ! Subscribed.
I was just watching one of your videos. I know this comment is old, but I forget that being a youtuber does not prevent you from just watching random youtube videos yourself, or liking hash-browns. Hope you got some great hashbrowns.
How has your training gone with the cringe cringe fruit?
Crazy seeing you here
Crazy how I started watching your videos a few months ago and see you comment on a random video about how to make hash browns.... small world lol
I don't know why but seeing you here made me laugh. I forget you cook a bit.
I made these for my family yesterday. They were delicious and easy to make. This is my go to recipe from now on.
We follow your instructions exactly and they turned out perfectly! Thank you so much for this delicious recipe.
Grating them into water worked wonders. I am amazed at the difference. I simply drained and rinsed the shredded potato in a strainer, pressed out the water, dumped it into the hot skillet, and they turned out perfectly. No towels needed.
You just saved a single father's life!! Thanks for all your easy well explained recipes
WOW looks so delicious!
I have failed countless of times with these but when the times I have successfully made some it is one of the most delicious things in food.
And ingredients-wise it can't be more simple. I mean for breakfast bacon, hash brown and scrambled egg or eggs in any cooked form maybe besides boiled is just heaven. And this with basically only THREE ingredients, can it be more simple and cheap but still makes you full and start your day in a more perfect way.
Often times I find the easiest dishes done right to be the most delicious.
I've been making these every birthday and holiday and everyone in my house loves them! Thank you for the recipe 🙏
That's really cool. Hashbrowns are a perfect special occasion food
I love hash browns but they are a pain in the ass to make
That's why I just go down to my local diner and pay $10 lol
Preach
i grate the potato and throw in the pan. waallaaa. cover it so the inside is cooked. use a non stick pan with tad of oil. If you want it fast and homemade, easy hash browns, with less fat.
A pain in the ass to make? How come? It just doesn't get simpler taht that, really ! :)
If you use his prep method for breakfast, you will be eating it for lunch
These are absolutely fabulous!! Being tired of countless attempts at hash downs, we simply went to You Tube. We just finished eating PERFECT HASHBROWNS! And.... my husband made them!
It’s actually easy because you have control over your potatoes.....they stay white! Each step creates the perfect outcome. Thank you.....thank you.....thank you!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this recipe. I have made these several times and they always turn out perfectly. Thank you for sharing!
Easy, quick recipe. No complicated procedure. Excellent!! Thanks
I have never made hash browns before. I did exactly what you said and they came out PERFECT!! Everyone in the family loves them! Thank you for this video!!
Made this step-by-step and had some of the best homemade hash browns I’ve ever had! Thank you!
I have tried to make diner style hashbrowns multiple times with no avail. Did this with butter+oil and lid turned out spectacular!
Shame so many diners don’t offer them anymore or tater tots or some off potato instead. Travesty! 😂
Grate in water, drain, dry & fry. Thank you for the technique that makes all the difference for perfect hash browns. Adding grilled onions to mine with a side of salsa verde. Yum!

Green chilie cheese hash browns. Best thing in the world in the morning.
+Marina Boyce gosh I didn't know there were replies to my comment! I would fry the onions in the oil first then remove them before adding the potatoes and add them back in after flipping the potatoes over on the second side.

Hahaha!!
I have a feeling those are the words of your profile pic.

if you add a small spoon of white flower to the mixture before cooking, they stick even better. I chop some fresh onions into my mixture. Add salt last, it speeds up oxidization.
TheLobstersoup I can never get mine to stick together like a patty. Might have to try this!

I made your hash brown recipe this morning and it turned out perfect. Thanks for sharing your pro tips!
I've done the rinsing before, but now I see mine failed because I didn't dry them, fluff them and didn't use enough oil. Ready to try this again! Clear, concise, no-nonsense, professional tutorial, thank you!
A salad spinner works nicely to help dry the tater shreds.
I was going to recommend the same thing. It looks like you beat me to it.
I would also recommend using a cast iron skillet.

I just tried this method and it was totally worth it! Mine never came out as crisp before, but I always just shredded the potatoes and friend shortly after. The water and towel method really made them crisp!
Very helpful. No added starch or egg, etc.. Thanks for this. It's how I recall them as a kid. I'm learning to cook with my SS pans and burner settings. This is a great recipe to learn that kind of thing. Cheers.
Just tried. Came out perfect. Even the pan was clean (usually a burnt nightmare) THANK YOU!
Just made them for breakfast and they were a hit! Nice and crispy 👌🏻
Thank you so much for your tutorial. I’ve been in the kitchen since the third grade. Today I learned from you what my hash browns were lacking. I new that the starch had to be removed, but I did not know the drying part. Also, I needed to be more generous with the oil & butter. Sir, I really, really love your technique because I followed you every step and my kid’s hash browns turned out to be fantastic. You made my day! Blessings to you and your loved ones! Thank you!💕🙌🏼👏🏻😍
Wow! Fast and clear. You are the best!!!
I've been failing at hashbrowns for years. Thank you RUclips recommended for an actual useful video suggestion! Going to give this a try.
Awesome video. Very well done,sir.
As a short order breakfast cook in my youth I can attest to the validity of your methods.
First time I tried making hash browns it was a mess. I followed your recipe and they were perfect 👌 thank you!
I thought I made good hash browns but you just upped my game! Thank you💙

Finally the secrets revealed!!! I tried to make this and couldn't figure out how to get the hashbrowns that nice golden color. Now I know, so going to try! Thanks for the tip!!!! Great video!!!!
THANK YOU!!! I’ve been avoiding hash browns because the method I used was longer and didn’t taste that good. This was straightforward (accidentally skipped the air drying step) but it tasted so good!
Just made this and it tasted awesome! 😍 thanks for the easy peasy recipe
A salad spinner works great for getting the water out of them!
After watching the video, I agree with you suggestion of a salad spinner a) you're not wasting water from running water to wash out the starch b) no extra laundry from using the tea towel or paper towel to get the potatoes dry 👍
Best narrated cooking video I have ever had the pleasure of watching, - Great job!
I just did this. Amazing! The hash browns were perfectly golden brown and light. We were all shocked and pleased by their unreal lightness, like potato feathers. Do this recipe!
Thank you so much! That’s the whole trick to getting them crispy is to drying them out!! Absolutely delish!

Thank you so much for Cooking for Dummies. I make latkes and now I know I miss the step of rinsing the starch out and letting them dry! Friday morning breakfast! Shalom!
I just tried this today after years of failed attempts using frozen hashbrowns...it work!!!! The hashbrowns were amazing!!!!
My wife loves hash browns and I wanted to make them golden and crispy but like most failed. I watched and learned from your video. They came out perfectly. Thank you very much!😊
Amazing! I was skimping on the oil in the past. Made mine with coconut oil and the flavor and crispness was delicious.
I'd have to use a different oil,I'm allergic to coconut oil!🤔
Dude got some straight up hashbrown skills y'all
My 11 year old brother made this. It’s not as hard as you think, it is very easy to make ( Very easy )
Comes out perfect everytime!
These turned out incredible🤤
This was a life changer for me!! Thank you !!!
That looks fantastic. I make them goo, but I want to get the crispier without burning. Now I know how.. thanks for sharing.
Kevin Ashby one tip. After grating your potatoe and rinsing 4 times put on paper towels multiple times and press all the water out of them . Makes a huge difference.
Tried this, turned out FANTASTIC. Thanks.
I knew about rinsing to get rid of the starch and then usually just squeezed them really good to get the water out. Never thought to then dry them further, nor to cover them while frying. Thanks for the tips!
My hashbrowns have never come out this nicely and now I know why! Thanks Jason!
Thank you so much! I just made the best hash browns I've ever tasted. I definitely subbed👍
I want to make this for my hash brown loving hubby! Thank you for this.

Thank you!!!! I LOVE this style of hash browns.
For the first time, my hash browns turned out crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Thank you so much for posting this!!! ♥
I followed the recipe--shred, rinse, dry and fry-- and these hash browns turned out better than restaurant hash browns. Crispy.
Thank for taking the time to make these amazing looking hash brown , bacon and eggs

Flawless technique
Just tried this technique...amazing. I use a food processor which makes them longer and a little stringy and put water in the bottom of food processor bowl. Used a mixture of avocado oil and butter. Season with salt and pepper. Absolute hash brown perfection.
Thank you so much man this was exactly what I needed to perfect my hash browns. Mine kept on getting stuck to the pan and I had no idea what to do

That is ridiculously simple. Thank you for such clear instructions!

Just made this (scrambled eggs and bacon included) for breakfast and it was great thanks for the recipe it’s a simple one but without this I may not have figured out things like draining the starch, what temperature etc so I very much appreciate this even if it’s a few years late lol.
Never too late brotha :)
I have a slightly different method. During the fluffing process, I season with s&p, paprika (for color), clove of garlic and 2-3 tbsp of dried parsley. I use only butter (1.5 tbsp and then another 1/2 tbsp aroubd the outside after I flip) and fry 8 mins per side, uncovered to evap moisture. Serve with 2 eggs over easy on top, so when you break the yolk, it runs all over the potatoes. But I like your method because it cuts out alot of frying time.
These are fabulous.
Absolutely delicious, my first time making them from scratch thank you chef. Now i know why they are so expensive but worth it every time. 🙏 thank you.
I made these today, they were good thank you☺️ I was a little impatient so I didn't let the pan heat up at the way so they weren't as dark as yours😅 but they were still delicious 😋 I didn't have butter so I used alot of oil, still worked!! Also could be one of the reasons why it wasn't as golden brown as yours too
Excellent recipe! Never made hash browns from scratch and these came out perfect! Not sure why the dislikes- must have been too good for those people to handle
I just made them, delicious! thanks.
