I just made these for the first time today. I followed her directions exactly, and it worked great two times in a row! (I made some for my wife and daughter first; then, a second batch for me.) During my batch, for the first 15 minutes, I whisked 3 eggs, and then I mixed some instant pancake mix. For the second 15 minutes, I cooked my pancakes. The hash browns came out of my cast iron skillet, and the eggs went right into it. Eggs were done in about 2 minutes; all of my food was hot! I ate at Denny's last night, and my grand slam was actually better than theirs!

Here is a cool trick you may want to try. After I grate my potatoes, I rinse them well with cold water then I use a salad spinner to dry them. The spinner will REALLY dry them out. Then I add, garlic, onion, salt, pepper and paprika. Everything else, I do the same. Try that salad spinner trick. You will be surprised - plus it will save paper towels.

+Victoria Lopez - How much salt & pepper? Not enough to measure - just a few shakes because you can't fix too much but you can always add more later. If I had to guess, I'd say maybe 1/16 of a teaspoon.
Good vid, Jenny. Thank you. Here's a tip for you: There's a long story involved but the moral is, try some Himalayan salt. I bought it off amazon because everybody was raving about it and I thought "who raves about salt?" but I am so glad I did. Just discovered your channel. Favorite of all the cooking vlogs. Simple, healthy recipes. Great tutorials. Thank you Jenny. Have not heard any news about you for a while so hope all is good in your world.
I usually use cheese cloth to squeeze out the moisture from the grated potatoes so I won't have to use too much paper towels. I also use a cast-iron pan so I won't have to wait 30 minutes to finish cooking those hash-browns. And, also, using a cast-iron pan cooks the hash-browns even more crisper and to a golden-brown surface. I know everybody is going to hate me for this - I also use salt & pepper and butter along with olive-oil for a better taste, making those hash-brown taste like real hash-browns.
Oh, no, cheesecloths are made to be used just once. And, no, I usually purchase cheesecloths at websites that sell them. But some grocery store do sell them as will, but, I won't purchase them there....
+avsiii okay thanks. I will look for cheese cloths online sometime ... they seem to come up pretty often in recipes. I usually just cover the dough or whatever with moist paper towels
Well, if your working with some kind of dough instead of hash-browns, I usually use a moist dish towels. I use dish-towels to keep scratch made pasta from drying out and to raise yeast dough.
I love Jenny! - first, she is Polish and I'm Polish; second, I love her cooking - the way my mom used to cook - quick, simple (and healthy) but what a taste!
You know what they say Jenny.... a messy cook is a good cook!! I love your happy face spatula ... and your timer, I have to get one!! Once again you have put a smile on my face.... thank you Jenny!!
Thank you very much!!! My Dad made homemade hash browns years ago with onions, oil of course, probably garlic and mushrooms if I’m remembering right and cut up jalapeño… perfect! This time I’m making it bland but your tip to keep them untouched each side for 30 minutes is spot on! I was skeptical at first thinking they’d burn but with some olive oil and because I squeezed the extra moisture out they’re turning out gorgeous and brown, crispy yumminess!!! Thanks a bunch 🤟🏽
I shall make this for dinner this evening as a side dish; thank you Jenny and God bless. I'm adding to my comment above instead of writing another. Jenny, I made this yesterday evening for dinner and it came out perfectly! They were crisp and delicious! Thanks again for sharing your wonderful recipe; God bless you.
I'm hooked! I've been making this almost every day now ever since I saw this video. My only problem is my burner is old and the heat doesn't stay even so sometimes i burn them alittle. I'm working on getting them perfect. Thanks Jenny😁 oh and I use a towel and I add shredded onion!
stacy jobe Do you squeeze the extra liquid out of the onions too? I was thinking about adding finely chopped onion and some bell pepper. I’d appreciate your advice!

P. S. I did cut time off cuz I used it for quiche crust and it went in the oven for 20. But for hash browns with over easy eggs....yes... 30 minutes! Fricking perfect! Throw it on, follow your directions, hop in the shower, flip it when you hop out! It’s the perfect way to make them when you don’t feel you have the time. I’ll probably shred a potato the night before & just rinse them good and keep them in a bowl of water in the fridge overnight. I’m thinking that might be a good way to have a good breakfast and still have time to get ready for work. I’m feeding off your recipes. I’ve watched several hash brown videos. This one actually works! And you can get ready for work at the same time!!! GENIUS 😃😃😃

Look you Jenny! Your voice, your humor, your cooking! You're a natural! Nice surprise discovery tonight. And it was your voice that drew me in! thank you thank you!
I do not know hash browns, but in my country we make something similar, but more flavoured. We peel and grate potatoes as well as you do, but we do not dry them at all. We put them in a bowl, add milk, flour, an egg, a little bit of salt, a little bit of pepper (optional), lots of garlic (crushed) and marjoram that we crush in our palms before adding, so that it is really soft. Then we mix it well and by using a ladle, we pour it on a pre-heated pan with some oil on it. We fry it until it is brown, then we turn it on the other side and fry the other side until brown too. If I should translate the recipes name into English, then it would be something like: Potatoe pancakes. (We usually make more than one for an adult person - for example, my husband can eat like 5 or 6 of them and he is slim!).
+DanaPatriciaMary1 That almost sounds like Pfannkuchen. My grandmother used to make it, except that she started with leftover mashed potatoes. She would add flour, egg, salt, pepper, garlic, and marjoram, and then fry the 3" patties until they were brown. So delicious.
DanaPatriciaMary1 right that would be potatoe pancakes & we make that here in America as well but just the shredded potatoe fried is hash browns. potatoe pancakes are popular in America as well.
I always click on the 👍 and then save. Your recipes are delicious and you make it look so easy to make. Thank you Jenny. I just made a double batch of your snow ball cookies yesterday and shared them with my family.
Love this video. I’ve been making hash browns a lot in quarantine and I was wondering why they take so freaking long to make? And mushy too. I expect them to cook in like 15 minutes, then get impatient when it takes longer. Now I feel better, can’t wait to try this method. Thanks!
15 minutes to go and it smells and looks great. I've been washing the starch out of mine and squeezing the moisture out and it always burns I always cooked it on Med High.. low heat and not touching it for 15 minutes is a great improvement over my past failures, your video is making some great smelling Crispy Hash browns.. I smother mine in ketchup but I may just try salted first.
I have a friend who is trying to make them and I recommended this video to him you are amazing I love all of your recipes I have not tried all of them yet but I will thank you very much again for this video keep doing what you're doing
Thanks so much for this recipe! I know it’s a simple thing (rolling all the moisture out) but I never knew to do that with hashys ! I always made them how my mother made them .. by putting a tablespoon or more of plain flour into the grated potatoe . And even an egg as well . It was called ‘mock fish ‘ in the 6o’s here in Australia 🇦🇺 we made them in rissole shape patties. Could we put some frozen peas and corn in there too? Or would that wreck the recipe?
I used to watch your show religiously and loved it. I just found this by mistake and going to look for other recipes you’ve done. I see you have as many utensils as I do. Happy holidays. Will you be posting holiday recipes??
Jenny Jones must own stock in Scott Towels! She wasn't kidding about the 30 minutes. I cooked mine for just 10 minutes. They were not cooked in the middle.. and Jenny showed up at my house and kicked my ass!
@@lisalavender3818 Yes absolutely. Or if you have a salad spinner thing that spins water from the lettuce after it's washed. I happen to have one lol that my mother gave me. I've never used it but it seems it would do even better than wasting an expensive roll of paper towels. I just love some good hash browns lol I could live off of that and broccoli alone😉
ClaireNicole33 Riiiiight??? LOL I forgot about the good old salad spinner. I have four sisters and back in the day my mom gave us all salad spinners. We never use them until one day my sister Julie told me that she uses hers to wash her bras in! Just add some water and some sides and spin away your bras are clean and then you can even rinse and dry them and them! Besides of all the wastage of all the papertowels and money, She’s using the bleaced towels so literally all that bleach is going right into your potatoes. Otherwise great recipe! 👍🏼😂
@@lisalavender3818 Haha great idea, imma have tho get creative with mine!! And right about the bleach! Love the story♡, those little precious moments we hold close to our hearts. When the world was a different place♡.. Some of the stuff our mommas gave us huh lol!❤❤❤
I think the reason hash browns are so enormously popular at breakfast, in diners, I-hop, Denny's etc, is that most folks love them, but don't cook them at home, because of the time required, the mess of squeezing out the water etc..so they take advantage of ordering them at local breakfast joints, where for some reason, they almost always seem to taste better
So glad to see you here, Jenny! I’ve loved your personality and endearing smile for years!! So great that I now have this cooking show as a way to stay connected! ✨💗✨
Jenny is such a treat. I used to watch her on an earlier show, reporting from different locations, covering interesting topics, as I recall. So pleased to find her here, doing these cooking segments. All her cooking segments I've seen were done back when butter was evil, but that's what was taught back then, & I know she meant well. This looks like a perfect thing to do with a potato, & I wouldn't use butter for this anyway.
@Cheryl Anderson...Unfortunately, many people never studied much about quality food, and nutrition, otherwise they would have known that anti- butter indoctrination was stupid. Along with the stupid anti-fat bs. I grew up eating super healthy food, and we ate plenty of butter, and we were very healthy. If people want to be healthy. Stop eating sugar, and move, move, move. Our bodies were meant to be used, not sit around. These 'shelter in place' orders are not healthy at all. Get the kids out, and walk, walk, walk, and play wherever you can.
@@serpentines6356 I agree. Just a few days ago, I encountered someone touting his love of lima beans. Another said she loved them too - in tons of butter & garlic. He reacted, as if in horror, adding he would use only a little bit, as he cares about his health. These old wives tales persist. Apparently if we supply enough fat in our diet, our body won't feel the need to create more fat. And you'r right about sugar too. It's not only a main source of why we develop fat, it has many other harmful effects. Our bodies do need good quality fat to function optionally. Our brains need Omega 3. When we eat too many grains, it's stored as a harmful fat, & also, our brains get flooded with too much Omega 6 & 9, displacing Omega 3 - which we need, creating mental confusion & difficulties like cloudy thinking, moody feelings & depression. Ironically, this is also all related to why many of us crave carbs as comfort foods - like me. I'm about to eat some reheated Mac 'n Cheese, with some leftover pieces of chicken in Alfredo sauce. Already ate the broccoli & that penne, yesterday.
I know this is an older video, but I wanted to make my husband some crispy hash browns and this is the best video I have found on it- thank you Jenny !

DanaPatriciaMary1 sounds like potato pancakes here but they are usually made with leftover mashed potatoes
DanaPatriciaMary1 right that would be potatoe pancakes & we make that here in America as well but just the shredded potatoe fried is hash browns. potatoe pancakes are popular in America as well.
Sounds like potato latkes to me. The best!
Finely minced onions mixed in with your hash browns puts them on another level. Honest.
I usually put onion, bell peppers, jalapeños and Taco Seasoning... Hashbrown out of the Galaxy!!!!
Oh yeah!! Why didn't I do that?! 😫 My granny added onion to everything! I know better! 😞..... Next time lol thank you for the reminder
Have never made hash browns before. Did this today. Lovely!
But did you DiEd?¿?
Thank you. I can finally make hashbrowns homemade!! Turned out great.
🤭"don't make me come over there" (she says-while setting her rubber ducky timer)😁
Just saying lol🤗
🦆quack quack quack ⏰
😂😂😂
Moms are no joke brooooo
I only cooked them for 20 minutes and she really came to my house.. she wasn't kidding.
😂🤣😅
😂😂😂
Lol. Thx for making me smile.
🤣
No be
Enjoyed your cooking Jenny. You really brought out the taste in it. Love your natural approach.
Hey Jenny. First time I tried the recipe and they came out exactly like yours. They were delicious. Thanks!!
I'm digging the spatula
Right? And the rubber-duck timer too!
Her recipes are tried & true. These hashbrowns are great. Thank you Jenny.
These are so legit, Jenny! It is an honor to make your recipe in our home!
Wonderful video! They NEVER do it right in the restaurants, so now I'll just make my own. Great video!
I had so much fun watching you ❤️ Your one person that helps getting through covid! Thank you 😊
When that "egg timer" went off, my dog went crazy. Two hours later, he is still pacing and looking at me suspiciously.
Mark Wilson mine also!
Christmas trees
Haha. I was thinking my cats would hear it. My dog is in the other room and hard of hearing. I lol at your comment.
Mark Wilson mine was doing the head tilt lol
It woke my dog soo abruptly from his snooze it was funny but I also felt bad haha

I always wondered what happened to Jenny. Good to find her again I always liked her.
Something about your voice feels like home and I love it.
she is a real mom, her voice sooths me.
I have a friend who is trying to make them and I recommended this video to him you are amazing I love all of your recipes I have not tried all of them yet but I will thank you very much again for this video keep doing what you're doing
Thank you for teaching me how to make the perfect hashbrowns! I'm 48 years old and I could never get my hashbrowns to brown correctly.
Yes yes omg I remember my mum doing that 😥 I miss her
Oh and don't forget the corn fritters yum
"If you don't have 30 minutes, make toast" loll
Awesome,yummy crunchy😋😋😋
Yeah, I was thinking about having wine while it cooks, one for each 15 minutes.
They were not cooked in the middle.. and Jenny showed up at my house and kicked my ass!
hahaha… of course she did.. U deserved it !!
Chepboyroglo
No they pay her to say there name
OMG! Your comment just cracked me up!!!
Be careful man!!
Thank You a million times over. I can eat this every day.
She forgot to mention A WHOLE ROLL OF PAPER TOWELS as an ingredient 😂😂😂 ❤
ClaireNicole33 lol, I thought the same thing...you can push the water out through a screen collender?
A fluffy towel does just fine. No wasted money on a bunch of paper towels.
Jenny , you present sooooo well !.... ( and your re3cepies work ! ) thank you.
Great instructions! You are funny, and I love all your gadgets/utensils. Cute!
Thank you I going to try it now looks pretty simple
It was goooood thanks again
Feliz domingo amiguita
Great video!! So glad to know how to make hash browns now -- they are so good. Thank you for the demonstration.
Jenny you can cook looks really good . thank you for sharing .
I just made these and they were absolutely delicious!
Cook them in a George Foreman Grill...and you only have to cook 15 minutes. It does both sides at once. :)
Surely you will go to hell for this blasphemy:-)
i got one, thanx for the advice.
Linda Pitchford ... great!!! I have one of those things, thank you for the tip!! 😁❤️
Do you have to put some oil on the George Foreman to cook the potatoes??
@@foobarmaximus3506 Uh oh. Now she's gonna come over there. U B in big trouble
Excellent!!!
Thanks and greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
So glad to see you here, Jenny! I’ve loved your personality and endearing smile for years!! So great that I now have this cooking show as a way to stay connected! ✨💗✨
Jenny Jones! havent seen you in forever. As pretty as ever.
I kept thinking: She looks familiar! I know her!
Used to have a show right?
Oh wow i disnt realize it was her!!!! What a throwback! Who knew she could cook?
Now that you said it...I remember her now. The Jenny Jones Show. Used to watch it in the 80s or 90s....
I thought I knew her from somewhere!
Great personality ! First video of yours I've seen. I waited 15 minutes, I PROMISE !
jenny Jones was a TV show host back in the day
