Hearing the thought process is so helpful. I appreciate when the RUclips ladies share what they're thinking and feeling. Decluttering is more than just physically pulling items out and getting rid of them. It's also letting go of those items mentally and emotionally. It's reasoning through the decision to keep or let go. That takes practice. And until we hear it out loud, we often don't recognize those connections that allow us to make the best decisions toward our individual goals. Sharing the thought process is part of the training. I am grateful for all of the RUclips ladies who share their expertise. Thank you, Denise! Thank you, Erica! Thank you all!!!

Awww, I would feel right at home in your kitchen for sure! I understand all the feelings associated with parting with objects which remind you of good memories and family. I was fortunate enough to be able to pass on some heirloom type dishes to my daughter as I cautioned her that she didn't have to accept them. I have other family who might accept some items as well. But like you, I must downsize my inventory so that my kids don't have to deal with all this stuff in the future. And the sooner I can give it to them, the better off I am, the less I have to clutter my cabinets AND my mind with. The more I declutter, even the hard stuff/sentimental, the easier it becomes, the more solidified my resolve. I love the freeing feeling I get from decluttering. So keep on keeping on, my friend.

I am new to your channel and plan to watch you regularly. You are awesome.
The great lessons from your 15 minutes project today that I needed to learn is that it is ok to take time to think through decision and not race the clock even though a timer is set.
My very elderly parents have as many many more sets as you have. My sister and I dread dealing with their house when they pass.
My own adult children have told me they do not want my good china. Lol

Exactly. My mom died in August and I am still dealing with some of the stuff we had to clear out of her house. And most of it, I didn't want and the grands didn't want it. My stuff...I already know, my daughter wants my china but other than that...not much. She's got a house full of her own stuff. Stuff from three moves that some of which never got unpacked so you know she doesn't need mine. Thank you for picking out the lessons I tried to subtly teach in this video.

I just found your channel on the playlist. This was so encouraging to see how much you got done in just 15 minutes! You did great. I had sooooo many dishes and glasses when I started decluttering. It was so hard for me to get rid of them. Now looking back I think “what was I thinking I only need one plate to eat off of, and one cup to drink out of, I cannot drink 20 glasses of drink. why did I have so many?!” It was interesting to me how emotionally attached I was to all my things.

I don't want to leave a bunch of stuff behind for people to deal with either. We don't have kids, so that burden would probably fall to my nieces. I already know they don't want or need my stuff so they'll likely throw it all in a dumpster. I'd rather give it away now to people who can use it.

My decluttering of dishes came about by necessity. A really nice Williams Sonoma set I had about 10 years ago that I bought at an estate sale I got rid of because they didn't fit in my dishwasher racks.
A set of Russell Wright I gave to one of my sons because I used them only for special occasions, if I remembered, and I wanted more room in the cabinet they were in.
My last set of nice white porcelain I gave to another son because they were heavy enough to cause pain in my arthritic hands when I was trying to use them or clean them. I replaced those with Corelle, just a set of 4, but I bought extras of those wide, flat soup(?) bowls like the ones you use for spaghetti, because I use those the most.
I guess if I ever have all my children here at one time and with grandchildren, I'll have to use Chinette😄
I appreciate your working through this and sharing with us, I seem to always need to do this with glassware and travel cups/mugs.

Great job. I'm not sentimentally attached to any of my kitchen items except for the breakfast set that came with a small tray and a large coffee cup (it holds two cups). There's an indent on the tray that perfectly fits the cup. I use it as coaster so I have my glass of water on the flat side and coffee on the spot it goes on. I keep it right next to the tool box I made in shop class back when I was in school. I prefer iced tea so I use my glass for it. For other hot beverages I use one from the set that came with our dishes. I'm not attached to them and most of the bowls in that set broke so I'm looking into getting another set. I like the beautiful portion control ones at Livliga. I love their Halsa design. Other things are higher on the priority list at the moment. Sentimental items for me are photographs of loved ones and pets who have passed so they can never be taken again. Alas I accidentally ruined some of them. I put carbonated drinks in our water bottles and although the beverage holders are on the outside of the bag they leaked all over the interior of my bag. It got on the small photo albums I keep in there so I cleaned them with a damp sponge and wiped off the rest with a damp rag. Then I let them air dry. The one with the oldest pictures messed up. Most of the pictures have a weird pattern on the top of the pictures. Shame became that one had pictures of my father (he died of Lou Gehrig's Disease in February 1996, our old favorite pet mouse, two of my old hamsters, and of our first dogs (one died and two were stolen from our yard while we were in school). The second one with newer pictures is okay. That's the only that has the few pictures of Thomas I have and new pictures of Daniel. I spend more time bonding with him so I didn't take very many myself and Lee only took a picture of me breastfeeding him but all you see is a giant boob and Thomas nursing for the first time (I was a 34KK in UK sizing back then; I got a breast reduction in 2015; lost five inches and gained one back so now I'm a 34HH in UK sizing and a 34L in US sizing). No one else took a picture of me holding him as he mostly breastfed (he did every two hours all day and all night long) and napped on my bust (he preferred to sleep at a angle). Also things from both Daniel and Thomas' baby years. I have Daniel NICU things (his little wrist cuff and one of his breathing devices) in a keepsake box I got in high school. I have a few of the outfits Thomas wore when he was alive. He died of SIDS seven weeks after his birth in 2011. I also keep my favorite skirt (the overlay came off of it) and a tank top I used to wear. It still fits my shoulders but won't go over my proportionally too large bust any longer. I love the print (it's from Dark Alice in Wonderland that was sold at Hot Topic years ago when my brother was a manager there back then) though so I might up-cycle it into something else. Maybe a decorate pillow or hang it on the wall. Or possibly give it to my sister if it fits her. She's a smaller band size (I fit 32 and 34 bands; she technically needs under a 28 band but that size doesn't exist in larger cup brands) than I am so it may fit her.

    Hi Denise!
You certainly did a super job decluttering,
I like the idea of the timer, less time to think about the sentimental items. It forces you to make a decision right away.
And Oh! You mentioned me. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it, I like the apron that you are wearing, but my favorite is the lemon one you are wearing in the ad and what do you know that is the one I ordered and have my on boxing video to upload.
    I really enjoyed watching (Darci)

Hi Darci, new are doing this thing. It’s something that is needed and can only help us grow, thank you for ordering one of my aprons. I love the lemon one too but this Sweet Pea that I’m wearing today is also really nice. This was a difficult decluttering session. I’m just too sentimental.

i love your apron, so cute. i agree with u there ... i've told my parents just ask .. then give away, i would love it if u would give it away now, enjoying the excitement of one u will love it and enjoy it, more than my brother or myself could. donate it. when that time comes we might just be quick about it and donate it (just to more forward, there will be many tasks to deal with, etc.) but some one else might love it, enjoy those memories or family ties. i enjoy your calming chat with us. thank you so much. I love your commentary. If I’d been there with you I would’ve asked if you need to keep the complete sets of some of the dishes. If you like the spaghetti plates (I do too! I’m ready to give up the normal dinner plates) but it’s usually just 2 of you eating spaghetti maybe you could keep 2 or 4 plates rather than 8 or 12? You did well though! I was surprised by how much you had pulled out by the end.

But its true we don't all the items anymore. They are things, not people. Others who need them can make use of them. The memories are in our heart. Love our apron, please did you make it or buy it?

Denise….unless you regularly have several people over at the same time (like a Bible study) and they drink coffee you don’t need those coffee cups. If you don’t offer coffee few will ask for it. I donated all of my cups except for my one I use daily and my husband’s 2 cups that he uses for hot and cold and has had d for many years. If guests request coffee I can give them one of those. I also have nice paper cups with lids that you can buy at the grocery store for not much. We keep too much for situations that seldom happen.
