- Tips to prevent voice hoarseness caused by inhaler use. Many patients complain of a hoarse voice when using inhalers, especially those which contain corticosteroids (such as Symbicort, Seretide, Foster etc.). These inhaler treatments are beneficial for controlling conditions such as asthma, however a hoarse voice can develop in some patients.
Often, there are 2 causes which are often overlooked:
1. Incorrect inhaler technique - many patients were never shown the correct inhaler technique for their prescribed device. There are many inhalers available and using them correctly can be confusing. Incorrect use causes the medication to deposit at the back of the throat, which in time causes irritation and a hoarse voice. I recommend to always ask your doctor or healthcare professional for a demonstration on how to use any newly prescribed inhaler and to regularly check your technique during consultations. Breathing in the medication correctly from the inhaler is specific to each device, however can be generally classified in two broad categories: A) slow and deep breath for MDI inhalers (which produce a puff on their own) and B) strong/powerful and deep breath in for DPI inhalers (which contain a dry powder, therefore require more force to effectively draw the medication deep into the lungs).
2. Not rinsing the back of the throat after taking the dose - This is often overlooked and a very simple way to prevent inhaler-induced voice hoarseness. Especially with corticosteroid inhalers, removing any residual medication from the back of the throat and mouth is very helpful. You can do this by simply taking some water in your mouth, swishing it around, gargling for a few seconds and spitting it out. I highly recommend doing this after using your inhaler. The medication only needs to be in the airways deep in the lungs.
With MDI inhalers, a spacer device can sometimes also help:

Dr. Stefan you are so very good at teaching us, sincere thank you.
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks it was very helpful for me!😃
Thank you doctor
I use a spacer wive my preventer and rinse my mouth out. I haven’t lost my voice four a long time. Until very recently I started to lose my voice again. I used to lose my voice all the time before they put me on a preventer and rescue inhaler. I have add coughing to Cigarette smoke that has caused me to lose my voice and plan and plant oils in Oil burners has also cost me to lose my voice and that was before I was on a preventer
mines more weak? not raspy
Dr at malaysia the dr ask to push the head upwards then bring in an out then push the pump.you are right I felt my throat bitter even after gargle that what they ask to do
Oh dear, I used the wrong technique. I think most of the medicine got stuck at the back of my throat yesterday and I woke up feeling extremely dry and voice is hoarse than before (i had voice hoarseness for a week already, started improving at Day 5 but got worse because of bad technique on Day 7).
It's urgent that I get my voice back, do you think I should stop using the medicine? My cough has improved significantly.
Also whT is best aresol inhaler or powder spin type inhaler?
Wow , Thankyou Doctor , i realise i have also been using Fostfair all wrong. Very very useful video!
I always was doing just sharp quikly inhalation without emptying my lungs first..
I just tried your technique and already feel as though I have got more air in my airways- if that makes sense.
By the way by the way do you think it is important to keep going for us and reviews yearly at the doctor's?..kind regards, Karen (uk)
Glad it was helpful! Probably a yearly follow-up is useful just in case new health issues appear
These inhaler actually wreak havoc on our body
Not sure what you mean... You don't think the conditions for which they are prescribed are the real problem?
Is it ok to use a spacer with Fostair?
You can do with the mdi device (the puffer) but try to first practice the correct inhalation technique without it as a spacer can be quite bulky. I'd suggest always taking the inhaler to your doctor/nurse appointments to double check your technique
I'm using the inhaler (the powder one) and it makes me have mucus , cough and my throat feels itchy 😭 is that ok?
I have the same... are you still having that problem? Just wondering what you did to bring relief
That’s exactly how I use them 😭 I even close my nose to make sure I only breathe in the medication and I even drink water afterwards to clear my throat to avoid the stupid hoarseness that I always end up with 😭
Try pulling your vocal chords out of the way. Ask any singer how to do that. The techique has helped me and I rarely get hoarseness these days.
Thanks for the video! but I still have voice hoarseness lol
I have same issue I’m going to try and use milk after to see if that helps. Water doesn’t work I hate the horse voice 😬
