I rescued one in Alaska yesterday,i took it and found the garage. I tried it and...damn this is bad. There are lots of trucks to use implements and semi trailers, for the same trouble of getting White Western Star can do that better than this junk ever could and costs what?...half or less than half of this. And there are 2 specialized trucks i love i have to mention CAT 745G and Pacific P16. Azov,Tayga,BM17,CAT CT681 wipe the floor with Derry Longhorn any day. This truck is pure garbage.
The look, the sound, the horn, the large fuel tank, the steering and the turning circle, and last but not least the new engine. Oh man, I just love this truck!
This thing with the new engine is easily one of the best heavy trucks in the game now. Though despite getting substantially more torque, it does still struggle to make use of highgear at times.
Yea, it’s probably one of my fav trucks even before the engine. I figured it would still struggle with high gear. It’s just because it’s so darn heavy (which I love). It’s brother is very similar. I do feel like the 3194 is darn good with those always on features as well. Gosh I love the 4520 though!
4:14 - I unintentionally “tested it under load” on that very same hill. I used everything in my playbook finally get it up that hill, but it took me at least 15 minutes. By the time I made it up there - my 400L tank was empty. No engine upgrades, and best mud tires I could purchase - never again!
Derry 4520 + OHD I tires = Total beastmode. The only thing I wish you could remove is the big useless winch on the back so you could put a two slot frame add-on along with other add-ons.
This truck is the one I most love the looks of and it's a shame it's performance doesn't live up to its price and driver kevel requirement. Thank God for mods that do it justice and makes it a blast
I actually drove the Osh Kosh version this is based off of while still in the Army and thought I might add a little perspective. If you take into account that everything the military buys comes from the lowest bidder then this things in game performance makes sense. I'd say the developers hit the nail on the head. Also, the reasons the Abrams doesn't drive itself long distances is that it gets even worse mileage than this thing and it wears the tracks out too fast. It was cheaper to design and buy an entire truck and trailer to haul it instead. Hell, the truck can only go 2 mph faster than the tank can anyway, (both governed). The only real thing the truck is actually any good at is picking up disabled vehicles because the two winches mounted behind the cab are absolute beasts. The real world version of this truck just isn't really that impressive. Honestly the in game truck is probably better, lol.
Well that’s was some great info you shared thank you! I guess we’re blessed to get that new engine here in Phase 6. I appreciate your insight on the real life version!
I just used this truck for the Cargo From the Ship contract. I’ve been using the 3194, but after the 4520 review I wanted to try it on this mission. I think I put the 2nd or 3rd level engine on it. I also used the Offroad gearbox. I took a step deck trailer and winched a ramped flatbed trailer. Overall, it went well. Had trouble making the right turn in the rocks after you leave the pick up location with the step deck trailer and the hill also near some rocks towards the main road. Winching the trailer got it through. Only trouble with the ramped trailer was I dumped the container at the loading spot because the truck and trailer got jammed. I removed the cargo, straightened out and reloaded the cargo. Got through the spots I had trouble with the step deck ok. I also disconnected the flatbed trailer going across the wooden bridge in smithville. I think the rear steer wheels helped getting through the path to the cargo. It was great in high gear. Mainly used low + to keep everything under control. Due to the price and other available options, and starting with a B rating for Power to Weight, I sold it after the contract. Thanks for the great reviews, Nathan!
Hey, You're welcome! Im glad you enjoy them. Its newest engine upgrade in maine will solve those power concerns, but the older engines like you explained just dont cut it. Hopefully when you get to Maine, you can give this one another shot
Wow, today I did the very same thing! but only after retrieving the top engine from Maine. It did well, although I heavily damaged it when rushing down the Smithville serpentine. UPD: nah, I pulled only one of them containers. The other was carried by Voron Grad.
Great review as always. I suggest this truck to you after seeing your Ford CLT 9000 review and hearing you also like a little bit of a challenge in snow runner. I always got a kinda of a "the little engine that could" vibe from this truck and I'm glad you enjoyed reviewing it.
A little underpowered maybe, but after a couple deliveries of long logs without tipping or getting stuck or running out of fuel, it now firmly sits within the circle of trust. Made it through some pretty bad mud patches without even having to winch. Put it in Low and it just keeps going, slow and steady. Love the steering rear axle and even if the truck is a little thirsty the 400l fuel tank will last for a long time. The only downside is that it will sometimes lock on inclines. Have yet to try it with the Maine engine, hopefully this will resolve this one issue. I love this truck!
It is a tad underpowered and can eat some Gas up as well as you said, but it really is a good truck especially since they have added the new engine in season 6 which I will attach that video in the description section of this video as well. I believe it made it soo much better
Man, I'd really love it if you'd do videos based around tasks. Best truck to pull high saddle trailers based on what you have access to in that or previous maps. Logs, trailers, cranes, talk more in terms of tasks instead of just truck ability.
I see what you mean and I have given some thought to doing videos of that sort. Even though I do inject my own opinion into these videos, I think giving players info and allowing them to choose whats best for them allows for people to critical think based upon knowledge of vehicle and their own capabilities. I do give suggestions for use in the Conclusion of every video. I try to stay away from the "whats the best truck for this" view because if I were to just say this is the best truck for something, people wouldnt explore other options.. I was one of those people, I used what RUclipsrs said was the best and after a while the game became reallly boring because I wasn't being challenged. However, I do think I'm going to do something of this sort, I just need to brainstorm on how i will deliver it :) Sorry for that long response. I hope I made some sense outta that.
I kinda like the other Derry better. Looks cooler, has slightly higher PRW of A and has fully time AWD and Diff-Lock. It did suck when the game first came out because of that annoying middle axle, but Since Sabre added the ability to lift those axles out of the way, it's made the Derry so much better. I have the Derry, CT681 and 49X. I run all 3 with axles up, I never put the axles down. And all 3 does quite well. The CT681 and 49X are my trucks dedicated to Short Logs. The extra weight on the back helps them grip and power though just about anything, with the UOD II Offroad tires I've rarely been stuck, and I've been on online, Phase 4, following Zikz 605R's down trails. The middle azles really bother you quite rarely as long as you leave them in the up position and never put them down. The 49X also makes a great follow truck because it has a middle winch point front and back, so when towing it down the road it stays in line with my 681 and it's not always trying to veer off to the left or right. I wish all the trucks had centered winch points, they are so much better then the left or right side winch points.
The management of downshifting and engaging diff lock to me isn't the issue. The issue is AFTER making those adjustments, does the truck respond and then does it MOVE. This Derry is becoming my favorite because it does MOVE. This thing is a beast and a toss up between this and P16 but with the low saddle, I use the Derry more often. What's the deal with "expense"?? I am not playing hard, just normal so money isn't really an issue. I sell all my vehicles and pick and choose from the garage what I need for a given task.
With its new upgrade added in season 6 it’s engine is definitely much better, but as explained in 2 videos about torque and gearboxes, downshifting and low gears do add power througput unless you can maintain high gear for the 25% boost. Also I don’t believe the P16 can haul low saddle at all. Only high saddle or long logs. Honestly I dunno why it costs so much, but other trucks are similar and just seem like they aren’t worth the purchase in hard mode. Normal mode money isn’t really a thing
With the engine upgrade I found this guy to be viable in high. Though the only map I tried this on is Ontario. I loved the steering though. I prefer this guy over the other one with the new engine.
America is full of good roads, it doesn’t make you think about the cross-country ability of the equipment that usually transports a tank on asphalt. In Russia there are directions instead of roads. It is logical that cars will be made more passable.
Because of you i just dropped alot of my earnings on this truck .alot of good can be said about a content creator that actually reads his comments and replys . I regret selling the bm17
True. I like that truck and i have low fuel consumption because i drive him economicly. Try sometimes use only low+ with locked diff with awd off😉 if he has awd on doesn't mean you need lock differencial if he strugle in hard terain. Works perfect on tatra Phoenix as well. Good video and thank you
That is a very good way to cut down on its fuel consumption that can get pretty high even with its newest engine added in phase 6. It’s a good thing it has a very larger fuel tank too.
Yes true bro. You can easy go from 1 map to another if you don't flip the truck. 😂 But yeah now with new engine is mutch better but torque is missing at the start.
Recently purchased the Derry Longhorn 4520. I love the turning circle but the engine is very underwhelming. I was on a very mild road in Alaska with a 5 slot flat bed fully loaded and had to downshift to Low- to make progress up a hill. It did it but I couldn’t believe a nearly 150k level 24 truck needed a gear that low. Not sure if I’ll keep it long term.
I think the biggest issue I had with this truck is that my head gets so tired from hearing how stressed the engine sounds. I can drive it, but not for a long time cause it gives me a little bit of a headache to listen to the engine.
It kinda feels like the dev team made all American trucks slightly worse than those from Russia.. Pretty annoying, as I like using both. Just bought the 4520 today tho, and I agree with your points, but just as you said, I like trying to make it work, and I guess I like using the "underdogs" :P
I’m glad you still bought it despite its flaws. Ya honestly it does feel pretty weak, but I’ve heard they might be adding some new things to to the game in the next big update. Not the BuG fixed that was put out today though. It still is a great truck; I love it personally

@@JoHn-if6wy it might “do the job” but there are a bunch of trucks that do the same job , only much better. The only task this truck can take is pulling one of those annoying 2 space trailers, or a super heavy mission trailer. Yeah it can pull a lowboy trailer but those are also irritating to take off-road and if you’re gonna recover a vehicle, winching it behind you is way simpler than loading it on a lowboy trailer adding extra weight and drag for that poor 4520
I've been dragging a pair of log trailers from a mod with this. Still don't have the top engine but it's just about managing. Find myself shouting "yes Oshy!" A lot. I sold it's predecessor because it won't turn for shit. Like the BM17 (Scammel S24) I feel it's been done dirty by the Devs.
It’s a really good truck. The new engine will make it much better. However with its low versatility I would have loved to see an engine with Derry Special power as well, but hey we did get an upgrade which was needed
There is no mission to recover it. There is a mission to recover the other Derry, based on the tank hauler truck the US military used before they switched over to the Oshkosh. It's in Alaska and the truck is off the road down a cliff. That Derry was actually the first truck in SnowRunner as well to have one of those middle dummy axles.
@@NProvince well, I went all the way through the Mountain river and Pedro bay with it to pick up that coiled tubing semi-trailer, and managed to drag it to its destination on a single fuel tank without refueling in the middle. It's rather good on fuel, TBH.
Well, I've just got the top engine for it. And I gotta say - it doesn't help that much. It's still a slow behemoth with sporadic steering - first too slow, then rapidly it turns into a tree. Awful vehicle but yeah for challenge’s sake it is good. Same as playing on highway trucks which I do.
All due respect, I’m not sure what you mean. Some of the most powerful machines of war have been from military contracts and have contributed to having the greatest military. If it was truly a bad truck in real life, other countries like China wouldn’t be trying to copy models of our aircraft and other equipment. Now this game doesn’t represent this truck in real life. It’s just a simulator so I understand that it’s a tad underwhelming for sure
@nprovince nice, I do agree though it was too little too late for the game, I already collected the best russian trucks before level 26. The Civillian duece and a half is the best American truck in the game to start with, imo and p12 to log with

Nah man, this thing is amazing. Gonna have to say it's user error
It was made under a military contract, what did you expect
All due respect, I’m not sure what you mean. Some of the most powerful machines of war have been from military contracts and have contributed to having the greatest military. If it was truly a bad truck in real life, other countries like China wouldn’t be trying to copy models of our aircraft and other equipment. Now this game doesn’t represent this truck in real life. It’s just a simulator so I understand that it’s a tad underwhelming for sure
Drove those in Iraq
Thank you for your service! Prior Air Force here !
Of course the Russians made their trucks better. Irl this truck is sick
In real life it is pretty awesome. It did get a new engine and that update video is in this video’s description
@nprovince nice, I do agree though it was too little too late for the game, I already collected the best russian trucks before level 26. The Civillian duece and a half is the best American truck in the game to start with, imo and p12 to log with
