    When I went to Vietnam in 1967 I took a little tape player with me on which I had taped some songs by Donovan. I figured that in lonely times over there in that jungle I could get some feelings of being back home. Donovan's voice could soothe things even in that hell hole called Vietnam.

      Sadly a "Hell hole" AMERICA created leaving so many little children behind they also 'Created' without ever being there as FATHERS .

      A hellhole that was completely unnecessary too, as it turned out, but that monster Henry Kissinger couldn't wait for the death toll to get started. I skipped the first draft lottery since I knew I'd move to Canada if I got a low number, but mine was in the 300s, so I joined the Peace Corps instead and have never regretted it!

    I LOVE this song, and Donovan and Crystal Gayle are perfect for this heart warming song of LOVE. The first time I listened to it I actually got a couple tears in my eyes. As I have metastatic prostate cancer and one of my cancer doctors told me I'm late stage 4 and it is very aggressive I do spend some of my remaining days listening to LOVE songs such as this one. They warm my heart and remind me of my 45 years I've been lucky enough to have with my beautiful wife, Deb. I am so fortunate to have this LOVE affair with her. God Bless each of you and please focus on the happiness in your lives.

    Can't resist saying this - I've just found this clip - A bit of trivia: It was shot at the New London Theatre in 1981for the BBC, directed/produced by Brian Whithouse - I was the Floor Assitant/Runner on the show and Chrystal asked me very quietly whether I could write the words for the song onn crib boards for her as she was worried she wouldn't remember them as sshe and Donavan hadn't rehearsed the number - I stood in the front row of the stalls with the cards. Christal was very sweet and Donavan very very amused that she didn't know the words.

    Ahhh, love you Crystal, doesn't she just melt your heart? !! Not sure what to call it: She has a unique vocal expression that just moves something in my heart. Most Crystal fans know what I'm talking about - you can hear it at 0:58, her little burst of breath... again at 2:15 & 2:21
    I'm sure Donovan can't believe his good fortune! It's a pairing I wouldn't expect, but they do quite nicely together. Thank you, Gussie!

    I missed the beauty of this song when it was released in 1965. Bad times for me (alcoholic stepmother who repeatedly threatened to butcher my 11 year old brother and me as we slept ran us out of the house at shotgun point on Christmas eve... things like that) so it was years before I came to appreciate Donovan's music. This is surely one of the most beautiful and romantic songs ever written.

      If you're a Donovan fan, I can understand you being into the mellow yellow.
      But this is a song about trying to catch the wind, and doing it faster makes more musical sense.
      There is a sense of urgency in the lyrics, something else that should push the song along.

    • @billnaylor518
      @billnaylor518 5 лет назад +9

      @@johnwattdotca I disagree. This song is a sad lament for what you long for yet will never receive. To me it should be slow, almost mournful.

    • @johnwattdotca
      @johnwattdotca 5 лет назад +1

      @@billnaylor518! Are you saying you don't know what it's like to catch the wind? A bicycle racer told me this last night, seeing him outside. He said I should let the wind blow me to Niagara Falls and told me the route.
      It worked. I didn't have to pedal sometimes, and it felt like I was trying to catch up to the wind, trees bending, only two cars on the road. This is new, global warming summer winds instead of winter snow.
      I still think this song should have a driving force to it. What you're saying reminds me of "Shenandoah", an older style of folk song, about a lifestyle lost to the ages.
