- Swapping a 45 ACP barrel out - for a 40 s&w. Both barrels are non ramped.
Firearm used is a Kimber Custom ii - 45acp.
Barrel used is a Dan Wesson
Magazine used is a Tripp research 40 s&w mag.
All parts in the firearm are 45 acp internals, including the 45acp slide stop.
Awesome info! Thanks
Would the 40 being a higher pressure round be a problem?. I know it's not a glock it's all steel so it's alot less likely to go kaboom. But will the frame start to Crack or anything I just got a gi 1911 in 45. But have plenty of .40 s&w ammo. Also in terms of reliability. Would it be possible to carry for ccw?
I wouldn’t see any concerns shooting the .40. I own a few 1911’s in 10mm (one of which I built on an aluminum frame), and they shoot my reloads on a steady diet at 1300+ fps. If you are doing a full swap out, I would recommend a 18.5lb recoil spring, along with a 26lb hammer spring. The recoil will be similar to shooting a 9mm, and will protect the frame from being battered. Trigger pull may have a slight increase in lbs with this change, but you’d have to really pay attention - to even notice it.
However, if just shooting 100 to 200 rounds on a monthly basis, I wouldn’t worry about a thing. That frame should last a few generations.
Switch to .357 Sig
It works for 10 mm barrel too
Any issues since then? I'm thinking about doing something like this for my dad, for Christmas. He absolutely loves the 1911 platform but WILL NOT do .45 or 9mm
No issues at all. I’m not sure I would rely on it as a carry gun. To comfortably carry it, I would probably switch out the slide stop at the very least, just ensure slide lock on the final round.
Made the change, fitted the barrel. Pistol runs fine. One issue I had with one of my mags, the last round failed to feed. Same mag repeatedly. The slide stop was engaging too soon and stopping the last round from feeding. Checkmate mags, other 3 worked fine.
Definitely provides a great option at the range. I’m not sure (at this point) if I’d feel comfortable using the option as a daily carry, but it provided a cheaper means on the range for sure
Nice Video Man.
Very Informative.
How is it Holding Up??
No problems at all. It’s been great

Good Morning. I Appreciate your Reply on this.
What are the Chances that you
Ithriw in a 9mm Barrel.
Would that Also Work??
Please Advise as I'm looking to Convert my Colt .45 to 9mm
Because Cost of Ammo.
I’d say for target shooting, it may be ok. But the larger breech face of the slide would be much wider, possibly casing feeding issues. In addition, the 45 acp recoil spring would be arguably much too strong. Typically with 9mm, I have better success with a 10-12lb recoil spring.
In the case of 9mm you may be best to getting a 9mm top assembly (9mm complete slide, barrel, recoil spring, and a 9mm slide stop.
One thing to look out for, is to make sure the barrel you purchase matches the frame. There are two types of ramped barrels (Clark para ramped & Wilson Nowland), as well as a 3rd option, being a non ramped barrel (which would be the traditional style barrel resembling what the majority of 45 acp 1911s come with).
The frame of your 1911 would be the indicator, as well as your stock barrel that is currently in your gun.

Very cool. What kind of barrel? Was the bushing from the 45?
Yes. I had only swapped the barrel, and of course the Magazine
@@californiahigh-desertconce7999 very cool. Can you tell me what brand of barrel? This looks like it's worth trying!
