    One of the best TST videos ever, well done. The Sapphire should be thought of as an example of what's possible with an EV. At that price they're not really worth buying as the enthusiast driving experience is going to be limited to drag racing. You could get the Air Touring and a GT3 for less than a Sapphire. And you should.

    • @blablah538

      A car with an engine is like an instrument and a dance partner at the same time. Weight also makes a car less or more engaging. A 5,300 lb ev going around the track is nowhere near exciting as 992 GT3 or rx7 FD. This thing is simply fast because it probably has 1,200hp or more. Where it’s slow it just makes up on sweepers and straights.

    Air GT Owner, I have had mine for 1 year 7 months, and have yet to use the Nav system in the car. Not needed, but to complain about it when so many manufacturers are moving away from it seems petty and just a thing to gripe about just to gripe. The key/door lock / unlock feature is very simple, when you own one and deal with it each and every day you get used to how it works, and it is a non issue, but for someone who has one from time to time, I'm sure it is confusing....but in reality it isn't. BTW, you do give up range by getting the Sapphire. Personally I can't spend and additional $150K just to gain 1.2 seconds on a 0-60 and a top speed of 205, but give up over 50 miles of practical range. Range is King in an EV and to only focus on speed your are doing a dis-service to the concept of Long Range driving on an EV. I have never seen a single person who is thinking about making the switch ask...How fast is this 0-60....they always ask, what is the Range on a single charge. And that is the bottom line.....Range. Highway assist....You almost got it right regarding how it detects if your hand is on the wheel. It isn't a matter of position on the wheel, it is a matter of resistance on the wheel that the car monitors. If the car monitors resistance then it knows you are holding the wheel, if it doesn't detect resistance, then it will issue the warning that you should put your hands on the wheel and give it some force feedback to let it know you are there. So close to getting it right. ;)
    I did appreciate your acknowledgement that there is a learning curve on track racing an EV vs a ICE car....I think this was the critical mistake MotorTrend made with their recent Lucid Sapphire vs McLaren 750s Coupe on a track. We really do not have an abundance of EV track racers to really go up against cars like the McLaren 750s so we are left with the reviewers who are not experts making comparisons unfair as they may be vs an EV. However, by suggestion that just because you are not used to how a performance EV handles after a life time of driving ICE cars that an EV doesn't give that "recreational feel", is quite honestly a bias opinion on the subject without full knowledge of both platforms.
    Overall, I think you presented a nice review of the product and praised it where praise was due, but came down on it without full and complete knowledge of the platform as a whole.
    Take care and Good Luck!

      @@lowstrife I was a test driver for a self-driving car company, and we were never "hands off" during that phase (testing on streets). One of the biggest problems with these systems is not necessarily the system itself (though some of them are pretty bad) but the fact that drivers are not trained in what to do when the car does something unexpected. Sometimes you can have a fraction of a second to not only react, but react correctly.

The Audi wore its weight in its nose, was terrible to work on, and despite making cars for decades by 2004, the reliability of early 2000s Audis were no better than first year Lucids. I used to work at Kia factory in quality. i know that sounds like a joke lol It was said when i was there that at some point the OEMs determined that most customers didn’t care about orange peel. Add that water based paints are harder to avoid orange peel. And i even remember Porsche in the early 00s announced that they were OK with a bit of orange peel because thick paint adds weight. I know, ridiculous. But i think at the end of the day the OEMs would rather have light even orange peel everywhere so its even instead of some good some bad.

    Let's be real most people who buy or lease an M5 aren't doing much canyon driving let alone track days. So in its mission to be the electric equivalent I think it probably succeeds even if you're paying a hefty early adopter price to be the fastest. I haven't driven one but gained an appreciation for the team after SavageGeese's hour long video on it. I think one of the engineers said their main car was an E39 M5? If you only get one car to do everything and you want it to be electric there are multiple options today, but this is the fastest. But I look at cars like this as I would an Audi RS6 or E63 Wagon or any number of other cars like that. You get one car that needs to do everything, then it makes some sense. For people like us would it be more sensible/better to have a cheaper Audi A6 Allroad or used Lucid Air and a Porsche or other sports car to pair with it? Yeah probably.

    I seriously think all EVs should copy Hyundai with the artificial engine/rev sounds. It brings a lot of emotion to the experience of driving. Having that as an option is never wrong. But if you don't want a noisy drive and wants a smooth relaxing cruise, you can always turn it off, unlike an ICE car which will always be noisy. I hope Lucid realises this.

    • @jpl8878
      @jpl8878 5 месяцев назад

      Spoken like a petrolhead. As someone who wants an EV for its EVness, which includes (relative) lack of powertrain noise, I don't want it to copy what the noises I don't care for in an ICE car. I don't want to pay for that development in the MSRP. Forget the silly fake engine noises and just give me the silent speed. If something like the Ioniq 5N is necessary to get petrolheads into EVs then so be it in the short term, but I don't want it to even be an option on any car I'm consdering.

    • @jzzz26
      @jzzz26 5 месяцев назад

      @@jpl8878 I’m actually one of the earliest Lucid fanboi. You are not getting my point. Advancements don’t care what you feel. EVs have the capability to do what an ICE car can’t. I’m just saying why not have that as an option. EVs can do it. An ICE car can’t. It’s still a win for an EV regardless.

    • @jpl8878
      @jpl8878 5 месяцев назад

      @@jzzz26 what is the advancement involved in simulating engine noise? I gave you a reason why to not have it as an option for every car. Some consumers - like myself - expressly don't want it and consider it a stupid waste of money. Let some cares have it, sure. The people who want it can buy those cars. But I'd rather the development funds on a car I'm interested be put toward things I care about and value from the experience, not on one of the primary reasons I'm avoiding ICEVs in the future.

    • @jzzz26
      @jzzz26 5 месяцев назад

      Look, this is the last time I am engaging with you since you sound so close minded. I said, EVs can do what an ICE car can’t which is having the capability to be silent or have sounds. Your mentality is like saying Phones shouldn’t have different ringtones. Alarms shouldn’t have different sound options. But they do. Not everyone need it. But it’s there because they can and some find it useful.

    • @jpl8878
      @jpl8878 5 месяцев назад

      @@jzzz26 it's not like a phone ringtone or an alarm at all. Your analogy would only work if I said EVs should only sound like an I4, not like a V8 or V12. Or if I said phones should only ever be on vibrate. Different alarm or ringtone sounds are also a negligible cost to phone makers.
      But the cost to tune the engine mimicry in the Ioniq 5N was significant. That's great for that car, but that's not how every car maker should spend their development money. EVs have the ability to be silent or make fake engine noise, but that doesn't mean the latter is sensible for every EV to do.
      And yes I'm quite close-minded to it for vehicles I want to buy. Like I said, let it be available on some models for those who want it. But I'll immediately disqualify any vehicle that does that fake engine noise because it tells me that the development team have prioritized an experience I don't care for.

But I will say, driving a 392 scat pack challenger yesterday track mode, no tcs, I had a bigger smile on my face than I’ve had in a long time. Getting the back end out around corners, that invigorating v8 rumble behind you, and the total feeling of being in control but out of control at the same time. An EV will never be able to replicate that. However I do want give the ioniq 5 N a good go in a circuit as I know I’d never be able to see the benefits of that ev on the road
