The C8 Corvette Z06 is one of the finest American cars ever engineered. A fundamentally reverse-engineered Ferrari 458 Speciale but even better, the Z06's showpiece is the high-reving European-style Flat Plane Crank LT5 V8 making 670 hp - more than any other naturally aspirated production V8 in history! There's also the brilliant ride, razor-sharp handling, and a whole lot more!
GM provided the vehicle, insurance and a tank of gas for this review.

The LT5 from the 90's ZR-1 was NOT engineered by Mercury Marine. It was BUILT by Mercury Marine because GM didn't have the production capacity for an all aluminum V8. The LT5 was engineered by Lotus, whom GM had a stake in at the time, based on some of the designs for the Lotus Etna concept car.
This is the answer
Wasn't the ZR-1 suspension tuned by Lotus as well?
@@swordmonkey6635 Yes, and at one time they were also working on an active suspension for the car. GM had a prototype ZR1 so equipped in its collection but sold it in the last several years.
I was going to say the same thing about Lotus.
Dude, chill.
Just finished signing the paperwork for my 3LZ. Came home to see this video, perfect timing! Will be picking it up at the Corvette museum in Bowling Green on the 20th, can’t wait!
Congrats! That's awesome I hope you enjoy it.
Congrats dude! Enjoy it for me. I am at least 5 years away from being able to afford a car like that but once I can I’m definitely getting one!
Congrats. My father did the same years ago. Walk thru the museum and then….taaa daaaaa
NCM was worth it and the car is great!
Just got my z06 a week and a half ago in the same rapid blue with sky cool gray seats color scheme as this video. The most incredible car I've ever owned by far. I'm in love. I've already put 1200 miles on it.
I like how the c8 isolates the passenger though. I don't want my passengers fumbling with stuff, I'm the driver, and the passenger needs to passenge.

I have a ‘24 red mist Z06 htc (non-Z07) and a 458 Speciale. When I drive my Z06 I am blown away by its performance, sound, interior quality, and overall looks. I think, “What a machine! How could one want for more.” Then I get behind the wheel of my Speciale and, as the saying goes, “it goes to 11.” The Speciale dances on its toes, lightening fast steering, insane DCT shifts; she’s alive and begging you to go faster, and faster! (Reminds me of that ad for the Abarth with that beautiful Italian model messing with that guy.)
You don’t want to drive a Speciale every day, it is a treat. The Z06 does everything well and can be a daily supercar. Love them both!
The Z07 naming scheme is so dumb. Just call it a track pack. It is so awkward telling people, "all Z07s are Z06s, but not all Z06s are Z07s." 🙄
Should have just called it the Z06 Zora package instead of Z07.
If it needs to be explained then why the hell are you telling them about it to begin with lol
How is that hard to understand?
but how are you supposed to beat the simpletons with your rambling of how your corvette is best corvette
The "z07" option came out in the C4 years. 1991-1995 c4's had that option. And it was the best factory track setup. Even better than a zr-1.
I bought a '23 C8 Z06 3LZ convertible without Z07 package, and it's fucking perfect. Best car ever.
Except for the Z07 which is more perfecter. Only 20% of Z06s come with Z07
@@jimsteinway695 I didn’t want the z07 for 99% street use, less perfect for street - the Z06 is like the GT3 Touring version.
Everytime I watch a Z06 video I want one. My C8 is great. I need that sound.
Have you thought about throwing a heads/cam in your C8?

@@davidmorrow4195that’s what he said. Most powerful NA v8 ever. That’s all that’s important. It doesn’t matter if it’s got a turbo or a supercharger
I’m coming from a 991.2 gt3 , I got tired of the games Porsche does with the GT cars. Got a Z07 Z06 Pretty happy camper
Personally I was never a Corvette fan until the C8 came out. In 2021 I purchased a new 992 C2S when they were still priced somewhat non ludicrous and discounts could still be had. That same car in the same spec now would be $150k. Have owned 2 different C8’s since then, a coupe for less than half the price of my 992, and now a hard top convertible for half the price. Bottom line, the C8 (even the base) has way more character for street driving than a 992 C2S. Forget the base C8, a Z06 can be had for less than a C2S! Porsche makes great vehicles no doubt, but it’s insane to pay such a premium. It’s sad that Porsche decided to crap on the middle class with the 911. They don’t want your business for the 911 if you are middle class, they only want the uber rich. As someone who has had to work for every penny I have, no problem Porsche, message read loud and clear. I’ll be just fine😉
I currently have a 992 T. For the price, it is lacking when compared to the C8. I test drove a Z06 and it blew me away. I have an order in now. I worry some about quality. The car I test drove had a bad rattle in the dash.
@@barryrodgers3039 should be ok as they get these kinks worked out as your model should be a 2025. I had the same paranoia with the initial launch of the base C8 as well. Looking forward to getting a Z06 1LZ down the road. Right now it seems like the only ones not spoken for are the ones optioned out to the max. What a car in any spec though, congrats.
Why is the C8 the only Vette you wanted?
I've had, C4,C5,C6 & currently a Velocity yellow with black stripes M7 , with a Supercharger, looks long tube headers and Billy Boat fusion Axel back. The car is amazing. But, I haven't driven a C8 yet. Could I buy one, yes. I just don't think I can give up the manual.
@@failingup4907 I was looking for a modern car that gives me the thrill of my NSX. For me, the Z06 in away represents what a modern NSX should have been. A mid-engine, naturally aspirated, high revving supercar.
@@failingup4907 great question, I probably should have stated initial post a little differently. I was an 80’s child and grew up loving the 911. In my mind buying a 911 meant you achieved the ultimate success. My first 911 was a $75k used 991.2 with about 13k miles on it. Loved that car at that price. Fast forward 3 years and I bought a brand new 992 C2S at $128k (MSRP $133k). Loved it the first month but quickly realized it was way overpriced, sounded mediocre, and was boring at slow speeds. Sold it in 3 months for a $10k profit because that’s when 992’s began to take off in price.
5 years ago I was driving a manual 718 Cayman, $65k base model. Test drove a C7 Z06 with a manual and was shocked just how much better it was than my 718. Should have switched to Corvette at that time to be honest.
The 911 has become so insanely overpriced but no one who owns one wants to believe it. They will come back to earth. Porsche has become so arrogant as a company that they believe they will get people to buy all electric Macans and 718’s. They will be humbled in my opinion in about 2-3 years.
That Z06 sounds soooo good. If I close my eyes, I would mistake this for a Ferrari. Lol
5:20 Um... Those tire marks are VERY sketchy. Lol.
I would definitely skip the Z07 pack and the 3LZ trim. The Z06 doesn't need either to be an amazing car. My personal spec would be a Z06 2LZ coupe with GT2 seats, front axle lift, and a few cosmetic bits for under $130k...bargain of the century.
Until you want to resell and every potential buyer asks “ it has the 3LZ Z07 right?” That’s the problem with your thinking
@@jimsteinway695 Nonsense. There will always be plenty of buyers with varying interests shopping in the pre-owned market. Wannabe race car drivers assume everyone shares their preferences, but that is obviously not the case. Besides, when I buy a vehicle, it's for me, not the next owner.
@@jimsteinway695 that’s a totally different mindset than I have. I could care less about resale value of particular car option choices. I buy cars for myself not for the next guy, but I understand if someone is in the buying and selling as an investment game but it’s not for me.
I absolutely love my 24 Z06 (without Z07). I went with the hard top convertible, and I think it's even better as I can go top down (or just drop the rear window) to hear that glorious LT6 even better. I have the same dash and to me using polarized sunglasses eliminates the reflection by probably 70%, and once you drive it for a while and get used to it, your brain just ignores the reflection most of the time. But I do agree, bad decision for any car company to do anything other than a black dash. I love Matt's comment about the gearbox that if it was a manual, he doesn't think he could keep up. I'm a die-hard manual person and still missed a clutch/stick manual some on the C8 Stingray, but I think the Z06 is perfectly paired with the DCT and a manual wouldn't work as well in it.
I agree a manual wouldnt work as well with it, especially being a high revving, lower torque fpc v8. But the part that pisses me off, is with the C7 ZR1. Production was cut short, they only made 3,000, and 70%!! of buyers bought the sh*tty torque converter auto. (& lots got soft tops, non-ztk, & the iffy orange & bronze spec). So there were only 450 manual ZTK coupes. Its pathetic, that even on the greatest, last front engine, last manual, most track capable Vette.. Most still bitched out. But the clowns are feeling dumb & coping hard now that manual ZTK coupes are priced $75-100k+ over autos. But thats also why they're $250-300k.
If GM hadnt budged, and if all ZR1's were manual, coupe only.. The prices would actually be attainable some day. But (for the special cars) anyone who buys an auto, (not even a DCT) when theres a manual option, is directly degrading & eroding the car community for enthusiasts. Theyre a net negative for the younger generation.

somebody had a bad bad day
At first I was put off by the design of having all the buttons on the wall in the car, that design just looked really weird. Now that I have been living with a car (2024 Volvo) that puts all that functionality in the main touch screen, I've completely changed my mind. Even though the infotainment in my car is fast and intuitive, I still have to take my eyes off the road to access many of the functions that Corvette puts in that row of buttons. Once you own the car the placement would become muscle memory and that is just better IMO.
5:43 - ooops Zack i believe you mis-spoke, i think you meant to say Ti "CON-RODS" not Ti "Push Rods". no worries.
That McLaren /Corvette mix up makes me laugh as I had a c7 z06 and a girl once asked her boyfriend if my car was a Lamborghini and he looked at her angrily and said no it’s a corvette. He seemed half embarrassed 😂
He should've snatched his promise ring back after that lol.
Just bought one, Z07 at MSRP in California. Be patient and be serious, dealers will work with you.
What was the deciding factor between Z06 3LZ and Z07 for you... I'm on the fence.
Close your eyes 😄 As for the interior complaints, it's the best ever Corvette interior and the first one since the mid sixties to actually make me want a Corvette rather than something else. The buttons in between the seats, I think it's fab, and easy to use, no need to stretch, very ergonomic. The passenger can reach all of their controls easily, too. The sound system, not so much. That's nit picking, though.
Agree the Sound system very disappointing. Put a sub behind driver seat and fixed!
@@mikevanhalen1989 I was referring to the passenger being able to control the sound system, not evaluating the sound quality.

Excellent review. You can tell by the look on both of your faces that this is definitely an "experience" that not alot of other cars can compare to. I think Matt mentioned before when driving this that it feels, very clearly, like GM STARTED with the Z06 when developing the new Vette and worked backwards for the regular car. Bravo GM. I hope these stand the test of time and wonder what the ZR1 is going to be like.

Cool review, but I'm confused. You said the LT6 engine has Ti valves and pushrods(?!). The LT6 engine is DOHC. I assume you mean connecting rods?
Watching this and seeing a non-Z07 Z06 roll by really drives the point home. There aren't many cars you can say you could daily that rev past 8k with the top down.
I wonder how much newer and how much more money you’d have to spend in Italian supercar land to go meaningfully faster on a track.
A lot more, because the truth is most people don't have the drivermod to utilize the performance anyway.
I wonder if those carpbon ceramics have been properly broken in yet. You're supposed to do 10 hard brakings from 80 to 20 to get them properly broken in for the best performance.
Yeah I would take a Z06 over pretty much anything other than a Revuelto or maybe a Spyder RS.
Badass motor
I want the 3LZ with body color everything!!!
One of the few modern cars that I would seriously be considering if I was in the market for the best drivable sports car experience at this price point or above. The Z07 package is overhyped, unless you're really focusing hard on frequent track work -- Obviously it's brilliant for performance but carbon wheels and stiff suspension do not a good road car make. I also personally think the Z06 looks better with less aero and wings tacked onto it.
Get the one that makes you want to drive it as frequently as possible and you will not be disappointed.
Agreed. I skipped the Z07 because I’m not gonna be tracking it, but honestly even without it it’s so damn good it would waste most anything out there on a track anyway. I have the same option on mine as this one, the ground effects with the extended front spoiler and the wider side splitters, which with the rear wicker bill give it a bit of extra presents but not as wild as the Z07, which to me is a good thing. Suffice to say I am glad I did not get the Z07, as this spec is perfect for me and I wouldn’t want that stiffer ride from the firmer suspension.
Apparently the Z07 is a sweetheart on the street. Yeah it’s obviously considerably stiffer, but if you put PS4s on it, it’s genuinely fine to drive on the road. It’s not like a ZL1 1LE that will indeed rock your shit on less than stellar roads, as that car is dead set focused on track work. You just get the added benefit of having one of the fastest production track cars ever made with said Z07 package. That’s the trim I would personally get, because I would use it for track duty, but the non-Z07 package cars are no less *brilliant*, and even more comfortable and daily drivable.
If GM performance got their hands on an affordable, not-cramped regular sedan, they would make a perfect sport compact. GTI, N or type R competitor. But nothing of the sort has happened in nearly 20 years. Just a monstrously wasted opportunity.
Having heard these a lot at Spring Mountain over the past year in all sorts of conditions, I can say the video doesn’t do the sound these make justice! It’s really throaty-much like a Ferrari.
I like that spec, no silly spoilers.😀

Brake by wire is prob my biggest issue with C8. There is no hydraulic feel, so this "feeling fade" isnt possible. The brake feel is dictated by the pedal design, not hydraulic fluid. I have a modded C8, as well as 6 other Corvettes...all manual...the C8 is very good.

You are right to compare it with the 458 because it basically IS a 458 made in America. GM literally bought a wrecked 458 engine and reverse engineered it, built it with a little bit bigger crankshafts,...
Nope, they benchmarked it. Big difference. They had already designed the engine and built prototypes when they bought that motor, and they explicitly stated that they bought it just to check how the Ferrari dealt with vibration because the larger 5.5 L motor has bigger vibration issues than the 4.5 L used in the Ferrari. And also, newsflash: Ferrari did not invent the FPC V8, which was first introduced into mass production by Cadillac in 1918, nor did they pioneer its usage in modern racing applications: this was done by an American company, Novi racing, in the early 1940s for Indy racing, 30 years before Ferrari began using FPC V8s. The FPC V8 was also adopted by Coventry climax out of the UK, Lotus, and Alpha Romeo well before Ferrari started using it (do you suppose Ferrari benchmarked these motors before building theirs?). Nor did they pioneer the use of mid engine V-8 sports car, that was released by Ford several years earlier as well as Alpha Romeo, and Corvette had built mid engine V8 prototypes in the mid to late 1960s, several years before Ferrari, and wanted to build it, but senior management axed the idea. So stop acting like Ferrari invented all this stuff and people are copying them, it is simply not true. They were copying others by using your definition long before Corvette adopted an FPC V8.

I have a 24’ and even in Florida traffic it never gets above 200 in traffic. Once I get moving temps plummet to like 175 for oil and engine!
@@Rob_S_Z06 That’s awesome. I have an Audi S5 and oil temps sit at like 204 in regular driving. If I get the revs up even for just few gears then it’s 218. I feel like your engine is going to outlast mine haha
Titanium connecting rods..... This motor has no pushrods.
got to love that new corvette!! new Corvette fan!! and the GT3 race car looks even better!!
Too bad it's so ugly. There are too many lines.
Comparison to a 10 year old Speciale really speaks to the greatest of that car. I evolved from a 458, 488 and F8 and currently have a 2025 Z06 on order. Just done drinking F car Koolaid.
Yes I’m with you. I just got off the Porsche GT3 game got a 23 z06 Z07. I’m tired of the ADMs and the runaround. So I’ll go American until Porsche gets its head out of its ass.
do you still think cybertruck is a scam?
Again, I'd just like to point out that although car reviewers hate the square-circle steering wheel in the C8 Corvette, that same square-circle steering wheel is in the LaFerrari. I don't recall anyone complaining about it then.
Yes, and several other Ferraris also have nearly square steering wheels.
Americans recieve hate for doing
The same as others. Thats how
The car community works. Been
This way, for 4 decades now lol
How many people you know actually own a Laferrari?, especially with only 500 made.
@@hpickettz34 and how many people he does know has what exactly to do with the factual observation that the car has a square steering wheel?
Also in the Ford GT.
Great review, the 3LZ is the Corvette Sweet Spot IMHO. Was hoping to snag a HeartBeat Hoodie form your merch store but only Small are left, please add more!!!
Ahhh that engine sounds so damn good. GM killed it on this one.
Are these videos typically Zach’s first time driving after Matt has “dailyd” the car or is it after both hosts drive and “daily” them?
Loved the back-and-forth banter and honest review of faults and strengths! Would have loved to see a 458 Speciale comparison, but I can’t imagine anyone offering one up at a 700k valuation. Thanks again, guys!
one of the best cars in the world right now
My GTI interior still feels better. I touched the interiors of various C8 trims and it lacks, full stop.
I challenge anyone to stroke them side by side or back to back with a much cheaper German and you will see. Lack of class will deter anyone but the most staunch middle America 🐄 boys.
@@chamade166lol shut up and stop going around “stroking” interiors you fancy-boy sicko
@@chamade166 I'm sure you're right, but your point is totally irrelevant
@chamade166 because it's A GTI and the vette is a vette.
It was 10 years ago when it was a Ferrari.
Regarding light dashes that reflect off the windshield, I've wondered if BMW will ever use that blacker than black material to make this a thing of the past.
Rumor has it is that the "Chasity Wall" is going away for the 2026 model year to make room for the Cadillac Escalade's 14.5" infotainment screen.
this isnt true, there keep these buttons
Great video! What an amazing American machine.
Ok, Zack, what’s your next [mid-engine] car?
Rear end still looks like a Camaro, they really need to fix that ugly box shape. Everything else on the car is curvy.
Make debadging the C8 Z06 a thing. It is a supercar.
Choice - 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo S or new 2024 Chevy Stingray Z06 ? Both about $150k
Depends on if you want a fast out of warranty German car with a muffled engine sound and 7K redline that looks like every other Porsche out there or an 8600 RPM symphony which will destroy the Porsche on a track.
Carwow did a video of a Z06 with its owner both trying 0-60 times. They couldn’t get better than a 3.4 or 3.5s I think.
I’m not sure why you complement the GM engineers when they set out to COPPY a 10+ year old Ferrari design.
Great review guys, loved it! CCBs can feel weird if not properly bedded, which I’d bet these weren’t. CCBs don’t fade unless they’re being really really really abused. 😊
I was lucky enough to get one of the first 300 2020 C8s made & she doesn’t feel old or used yet. I absolutely still love her! Best Vette ever! No regrets for me, miles of smiles 😁
Sounds like music. Love the circle round on the street setup thank you!
Following these in BAT and few if any are going above msrp now
Hype is over for this mass produced car. Paying over was a guaranteed way to lose more to depreciation.
You can order new for MSRP now. Some dealers don't even have a waitlist. Just need to call around.
@@barryrodgers3039but most of the good options are on constraint
@@gickneorge
Mass produced for the C8 Z06???
They only produced 6,314 total cars
@@WindyCity1992 exactly, mass produced, not a limited car in any way shape or form. It’s not some limited run from Porsche or Ferrari. You order one they build one…
Which watch is that Matt?
That sounds sooooo good!
Sweet vid brochachos
Man i love that car color and all
Racecar lumberjack
I just got the HTC one the last month and the car is really amazing.
The sound, the handling, the design, the engine
Way over my expectations I'm in love with my car ❤️
@elperroquehabla1978 are you really that stupid to think anybody commenting in here would think that a cell phone released in 2023 could be mistaken for a car???
Its too bad these guys are so un-informed about GM cars, Vettes, Camaro's, Cadillac's etc. If you know the details & insane engineering that goes into GM's sportscars, it becomes much more impressive & respectable. They've had world-class engineers & motorsport guys building the "fast" cars for years.
Which is how theyve made such great drivers cars since '09-'14 ish with incredible chassis/suspension/handling/braking & driver feedback.
'09-'14 Cadillac CTSV manual (also the wagon)
'09-13 Z06 & ZR1 (once they had mag-ride, CC brakes etc)
C7 Vettes esp. GS, Z06 & Zr1 which had highest ever skidpad grip at 1.2g. (Higher than Laferrari, Senna, SVJ etc) only beat by a gt3rs later on
5th Gen Camaro Z/28 (stick-only, stripped-out, LS7 track car)
6th gen SS 1le & Zl1 1le
And CT5v/4v Blackwings.. which at 4150lb, on avg-size PS4's, pulls 1.05‐1.08g on a skidpad
And now C8 Z06's & soon ZR1's. Which pull 1.16-1.22g despite weighing 3650lb minimum.
GM's been at it for years making amazing drivers cars that defy physics. But now the Vettes & Cadis have really nice interiors they're "acceptable". And largely thanks to that theyre unaffordable😅 But just look at GM cars @ Laguna Seca or C&D Lightning Lap. At VIR the C8 Z07 is 4th? Outta 300+ cars over 17 years. Only barely beat by AMG GT Black, GT3rs, & a Senna👌
Absolutely perfect factory spec.
This almost exact spec but with an all black interior is what I made myself on the configurator. 👌 so good.
Hardly lol
I love my 24 ZO6 in carbon flash! I have family that works at Corvette plant and they say the C9 will be going back to front engine mainly due to maintenance. These C8s will go way up in value if this is the case. I will do my best to acquire C8 ZR1 but thats the only way I will part with ZO6.
