Hyundai's new Ioniq5 N is the perfect EV if you're looking for the most versatile performance vehicle on the market. It makes over 600 HP, has all-wheel drive and a good range, but with its synthetic manual gearbox can effectively mimic a great ICE powertrain in sporty driving situations. By offering a true best-of-both-worlds options, the Ioniq 5N is virtually unbeatable in the marketplace. Zack loves it, and Matt really wants one, but won't be buying one. Here's why.
Hyundai provided the vehicle and insurance for this review.

Why Matt Won't Be Buying an Ioniq5N (Even Though He Wants One) - TheSmokingTire

#ioniq5Nreview Авто/Мото
The fact that a Hyundai is so close to a Porsche in its given category it's absolutely insane and very commendable. I've personally had bad experiences with the brand prior, but the dedication they are showing into making practical, fun and dynamic cars absolutely is worthy of being commended.
It will still always be a Hyundai. That's not as embarrassing as it use to be 10 or 15 years ago, but it just carries zero weight in the curb/brand appeal department. No one is going to be excited to see one of these on the street for the first time.
@@heyhayhay247I beg to differ. It looks like nothing on the road. It is fantastic and in it's own genre. Can't say the same for more conservative brands.
@@John.Christopher kia dealers suck. untill they fix that experience its not worth it.
@@phgamer4393 As opposed to luxury car dealers?
@@John.Christopher I dont know. never been to a luxury car dealer. im just saying in general. gave me a sour taste when i went to try to help a family member get a car.
Matt’s decision totally makes sense imho. My circumstances are different, so I got a 5N and seriously could not be happier. The best thing for me is that it’s literally 3 cars in one. Quiet and relaxing (yet still fun) daily commuter, useful crap getter (easily fit whatever I buy at Home Depot), and a crazy fast, scintillating enthusiast car.
I’m a truly happy camper.
There is nothing “enthusiast” about it. Everything is completely fake and simulated including the transmission and engine sound. It’s a big ass electric SUV disguised as enthusiasts car. There is nothing authentic in this thing.
@@Shay-eo5kp People can have fun in this car. Don't like it? Get enthusiastic in 20th century tech
@@Shay-eo5kpyour petrol car is total fake, there are no real horses under the hood!
@@Shay-eo5kp tell that to a racer on a race track. this car is what you call a "drivers car" just like every other N car. also the numbers disagree with you. it is in fact engineered differently from the standard ionic 5.
How’s the ride quality? Stiff and bumpy? As your daily driver curious if it’s nice and reasonable soft ride? I saw in other reviews they said after an hour the seats get uncomfortable. For shorter drives it’s good.
Misha Charoudin drove 2 very fast laps at Nordschleife without regen on and the brakes never faded. One lap chasing another 5N and the second lap leading the other 5N. One of my favorite videos!
Yep the video from the other 5N is on RUclips as well and that guy is a mad man.

I bought one for my wife. She drives it all the time, and never uses any N buttons. Those are all for me😊. Her only complaint is the steering circle. But she will get used to that...
It is a great car for day to day use, and massive fun when you want it to be. Range could be a bit better, though.
Test drove one of these the other day and was absolutely blown away. Hyundai have just raised the bar 🇰🇷

@@fffwe3876 Likelihood of that happening is near zero.

How? By making a Model Y Performance that's like $15k more expensive and has less range? If they raised the bar, it was only so they could more easily go under it.
Everyone should watch the Misha video of him ripping one of these around the ring. Very enjoyable.
Agreed. That was super fun to watch.
I saw it and agree, a lot of people probably went home and googled wth just blew past their doors off.

Seeing How Well The N Line Is Working For Them It’s Time We Brought Back The Genesis Coupe
G70
@brianbohnet1907 a G70 coupe would be dope. Especially if they'd give us the v6 with the stick
Take the battery and 380hp rear motor from the I5N and make a lighter, sporty RWD Genesis Coupe N, with all the fun N modes (launch/torque/eShift/etc.) :)
Or the tiburon 🦈
Genesis announced a magma line of sports cars. Not sure how much they'll take from the N series though
Driving enthusiasts rejoice! When Hyundai is giving Porsche a run for their money in driving dynamics and fun, we win. Hopefully Porsche, the company for which “there is no substitute”, takes this as a thorn in their side and we get genuine competition to make genuinely fun EVs.
the fact you're seriously cross shopping the macan and this is crazy. shows how far Hyundai has come and how much of an equalizer EV powertrains are.
The menu’s get criticized by reviewers, but honestly they have a different perspective since they have to figure it out in such a short amount of time. If I’m a long term owner, I would absolutely love endless options to fine tune my ride to just the way I like it.
You also would find what you like, set it and don't change it until you have to rarely do something else. It let's everyone have what they want.
Yeah I think its a feature if anything and its like an electric's equivalent to how in some older sports cars the longer you had it the more you could confidently drive it crazier. But I don't think the average person cares about or sees it as appealing. They want to put in as little input or effort using anything and prefer curated options over deep customization. A good example in another industry is the amount of games sold/played on PC vs consoles.
Gosh I love to try this car out soo bad
Agreed
Agreed, it's like nfsu n nfsu2 where u can set the tune of ur car, suspension, aero and such. Once u get it right, you will love it too hell
I think your wife should drive the normal Ioniq 5 with everything in it (the facelift will be out soon) with AWD 325HP and I think that's the real compromise. It's cheaper, plenty fast and has all the features inside. I love ours and the N would be fun and great but it's not a versatile.
Regular ionic 5 can be had for under $250/month lease as well. Really good value at that cost.
@@joeracer302 It really looks good in the sheet metal like a giant hatchback SUV too. One of my neighbors bought one and it is an eye catcher. Kind of a retro chic.
Aeropress is by a mile the best product plug you guys ever did
for certain. it's a classic
A very, VERY British day. Weirdly, we also recently had one of these days on the East coast. I want the Ioniq5 N badly
I had beans for dinner
June gloom is real in SoCal
Bright sunshine and heat here in England......

Nice day 🌞 in Glasgow today 🫶🏾🏴
After seeing this car, I can’t wait to see what the N Vision 74 is gonna be and what comes after that.
Same here!
It sucks that theybare making the nvision74 a limited run vehicle. Its out of reach for the majority of enthusiasts. They should honestly have tried harder to make a standard cersion that could be mass produced.
@@Turbanator44568 agree, I’ll never afford it, but I think of it more like a test platform for features that’ll trickle down to more affordable cars. It could ACTUALLY be a game changer. That term gets thrown around pretty loosely nowadays.
@@johntyson just weird that they couldn't, or more accurately didn't adapt the chassis for a divorced hybrid drive train or just a standard 4 cyl turbo FR setup like the genesis coupe. Just overall a wild and missed oppurtunity, and that window may be closing sooner than later as people tire of this design langauge.
I think the I6N based on the RN22e concept is what's coming next
I love that even car RUclipsr need to negotiate vehicles with their spouse. Makes me feel better. P.S. The new cat is a winner!
-20% size + weight = ev perfection
Exactly. That's what I have been saying about this car since its introduction. It has the Delta Integrale look but its just too big. Downside to 7/8 and it would be that much better.
Rivian r3x?
Hyundai has an unannounced but recently trademarked “Ioniq 3”
Agreed but then it wouldn't be this vehicle...it's sized appropriately for it's competition - i.e. compact SUVs (EV or not)...
If they shrank it 20% in size it would be a subcompact competitor and hence a much more inferior product since it would be overdone vs competitors...if the EV stuff was 20% smaller it would be slower and have less range...and for all those reasons next to no one would actually buy it as evidenced by the sales volume difference between the 2 segments of the market...
the size and weight are a direct consequence of trying to get range. The range is already dicey on this thing. You start even -%15 weight and you don't have product.
Matt said, “We work for a living” with a straight face. Lol. Keep up the great work - I want your job when I grow up some day. 👍
Silly man. Both of them made their jobs they are in and they do it quite well. It is their talent that make their U-Tube channel work!!
The manual gear decision is driven by the motor mode selection more sporty you pick you holds the revs higher and picks up lower gear when switch to manual + It changes the red line from ~6500 to ~8000 again depending on the mode
Also It has 110v outlet in the footwell of middle back seat
I really don’t have any room left in the fleet for another car, especially on EV but I’m happy these products exist. I am very hesitant about Hyundai follow through with their electric cars and the service department. I haven’t heard great things about the N line of cars and warranty/repairs.
Agreed. Hyundai needs to ditch the franchise dealership model for their EVs. Every make that isn't Telsa has hurt and part of that pain was due to recalls (which is expected to a degree) and dealership follow through.
Easy fix would be to hire corporate master techs for EVs, pay them well, and assign them regionally to cover a handful of dealerships. Dealerships will have a designated area for EV repairs as well as any other tooling required so the tech just shows up with a few of their own specialized tools.
Same. I have 8 cars in 2 different countries. Irony is I am having to buy more expensive cars since the insurance etc is based on engine size, so better to buy a carrera gt than a lambo for example. But man I want a i20n and an elantra n. But no space. Also my daily is a aston martin rapide amr when I have more than 1 passenger.
Nice review. Props about the ad too, enjoyed listening to it and it didn’t break the vibe
Dayum! That ad setup was clean
Think its probably unfortunate they're complaining about all the settings.. sounds like an easy thing to complain about as journalist who gets a car for a few days or something. And then manufactures listen cause they care about getting good reviews. But actual owners don't need to learn every setting in first day, they'll have car for years. Surely after 3 years of ownership no one is ever going to say 'oh yeah too many settings, I am so confused by them all.'
Problem is you'll get about a ten minute walk through on the menus at the dealer and then get yourself into the same position they did. Also the manuals are notoriously out of date for them.
Lastly if you have a " I just want it to work" spouse and you're a I can figure this out tech kind of person, it can make their experience in the vehicle, less than stellar.
Keep up the good work. Love your videos
I've been hovering around deciding to get an Aeropress but your "ad" for it really spoke to me....the idea of pulling to the side of a mountain to brew a cup and take in the sights might be CRA (compelling reason to act). Good Job!
Also really looking forward to seeing where they are at in 2 years on the used market. This in the $40's would be a game changer.
I love mine for backpacking and car camping. Had my original for several years with no issues.
Believe it or not we had a little sun today in GB . Great video as usual
Great review guys. That dashboard in the Macan looks really nice tho.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
SMOOTH ad read and segue into it, didn't skip because of this.
I love the concept of the Ionic 5N but I personally would rather collect some other ICE sports cars before they go away. Now…someday when I have to buy an electric car…what Hyundai has done with the performance and fake engine sensations etc. has definitely moved it to the top of my list. However,I’ll wait until they start using Solid State battery technology. Less weight and greater range…which this car definitely needs!
I5N is indeed a heavy vehicle, but worth noting that theUrus is among the lighter super-SUV coupes. X6M for example is nearly 5400lbs. Not surprised they were able to make the I5N work at 4800
Great video!
Matt "these beans were whole this morning" Farah.
I sat in one at the LA auto show and was immediately blown away by the seats and steering wheel, it feels like a toy in the best way and seeing the stats just makes it that much more fun!
This makes me excited for the Ioniq6 N
That little cup holder button is so cool
Really thought this video was better made than previous ones, having a natural segue to the sponsor integration is so much less jarring than cutting to it out of nowhere. Good balance of B roll shots during the drive too
Thank you for mentioning the heated seat menu. I thought the exact same thing. I can't tell you how many times I go to look at google maps only to find the heated seat menu.
I don't think the menu is complicated. You just need to learn it. It's like a manual car is not hard. You just need to learn and get familiar with it
Such a great video
I have a normal Ioniq 5. The 110V (or 240V here in Scotland) is in the middle of the rear seats in the footwell. Have they removed this for the N?
Please, how does it compare to the car you guys have lots of experience with ,,, the ice Macan GTS? thanks
I think it's great that they give you all those different options/settings.
But it would probably be a good idea, if they devided them into sections.
A simple one, with a couple of presets.
And the advanced/pro version, with all the options.
Seriously contemplating making this my daily driver
What route do u take to good vibes isn't ach closed before that point? Is it big tajunga then down from the opposite side?
I was all about the 'upside down' aeropress method when I used them (for about 15 years) ... try it out! No drips.
So the Macan is obviously better built and more comfortable. It follows more the luxury car ethos. Quiet and smooth running. Thats where a luxury EV works. But it sounds like the Ionic 5N simply does sport better. This is the first EV to actually properly involve the drivers multiple senses-acceleration, braking, handling, sound, and gear changes both up and down. This is what you want in a sports car. Will the EV Boxster/Cayman live up to this Ionic 5N. For the enthusiast driver, these are the characteristics that will get an "ice only" driver to possibly take the plunge to an EV.
That aeropress go plus whatever looks like a great addition to the lineup
Properly styled car, hints of tron 😎
The tailgate rattle is a known issue and there is a Technical Service Bulletin for a warranty fix. I wish they would've resigned those components for the N, though.
The best thing about the simulated engine sounds and manual shifting is that you can turn them off.
How was the range?
Great review Is a ameizing car 😮
I'm waiting for the next version of this, but I really want one
Love it and it looks KILLER in red. I'm not getting rid of my Macan GTS for it though. lol
I liked the smoking tire for the careful, thoughtful reviews...(my Mach-E is my daily driver) Am even more impressed by the Aeropress endorsement (my other "daily driver")
Amazing product, these days I'm more intrigued by the innovation happening in the EV space than ICE. Hopefully it sells and proves that a market for more sporty EVs exists!
If I were to get an EV, I would 100% get this one. Not in the budget or plan at all any time soon (especially since I daily drive a manual transmission mk7.5 GTI and I’m very happy with it), but I do really love this idea for enthusiasts who want an EV. The complicated menus is an easy fix with updates. I think its njce to have all that as an option but if it was easier to sort through or there were also several presets to choose from in addition to the extra options then I think they have a good chance of selling a bunch of them. SOOOOO much better than the cyber truck lol
I really like the styling of this vehicle. Its very 80s hot hatch reminds me of so many different vehicles. I’m curious does the vehicle have a tow rating? If so, what might that be?
No, it cannot tow anything
The regular ioniq 5 can tow 2500 lbs. I'd hope a tow package can be added to this one too
A hot hatch lol the size of a moving van.
Is the battery assembly still $36k USD? Not sure why this question isn’t brought up…
That's a great looking car. The styling is very nice.
Now they just need to build that Delorean-looking concept thing and put this powertrain in it. Then I can die happy
That would be pretty sweet, my friend 😊
N-Vision 74
If there's no AC 110v outlet, how'd you use the kettle in the advert for Aeropress? 🤔
It's standard plug on the Ioniq, plug is in the back seat between the seats on the footwell.
Seeing this going full blast on the Nordschleife, it had insane speed compared to other cars. Big rotation on power etc, great cary dynamically judging just by what it was capable of.
If I was getting an EV, I'd wait about another year and get one used. Right now it's already crazy how much depreciation there is on audi etron, lucid, etc. Some examples have lost $40k in 1 year with 5000 miles. I think currently the only EVs holding their values are Rivian and Cybertruck just due to Availability/Supply/Demand. I would like to eventually get a Taycan, that's a few years old and Really hope Porsche follows what Hyundai has accomplished with making a simulated gearbox so It's more engaging to drive. Would also love to get the R1S rivian once they depreciate.
I think the emulation of gears and sound it’s an amazing thing, and most likely other manufacturers are taking notes.
However, this novelty won’t last. New generations of drivers might never experience a car with a transmission and a thermic engine, like 100 years ago new drivers never rode a horse cart. And I bet 100 years ago there were older people saying “the horse understands you, while these new oil burners give you just problems”
I disagree I find it annoying.
Sounds like a great car, but I'm really pumped for the Macan EV content I wont lie!
This color looks so much better…. Then the light blue
Thank you Matt, for cleaning the rear window once you started driving... 🙂
Want to buy one. My concern is the depreciation. What do you all figure it will be on a year? I tend to keep cars for only nine months.
45K
Love manual seats! Who's got time for (or the need for, or the weight of) slow motors? Never understood this.
When you share a car with someone, memory seats are way more convinient but if the car does not have memory seats I agree that manual seats are better
Memory seats linked to your key adjust before you even get in
Motors can be adjusted just perfectly.
Manual seats are more inaccurate.
In the Ioniq5 I had those 2 settings which weren't perfect because I needed the one in between them
I absolutely agree. It costs more for power seats, they're slow as hell and they make the car heavier and more prone for breaks. How many times does one need to freaking change their own seat!?
@@antoinedoinellLmao. How often have you ever seen motorized seats “go wrong”?
I think there's one potential market Hyundai might have unknowingly made this for are people who play video games. Not just active ones, but those who played when they were younger and then out grew them or fell out of favor due to costs and trends. I can imagine someone who liked to customize cars in NFS or Forza wouldn't find it as intimidating and think the several options in the menu as cool.
Yeah. Those menus are super simple when compared to, say, F1 games where you can adjust the smallest of details (suspension setup, aerodynamics, etc.).
I want one for a commuter/around town weekend car. I can’t justify the price at this point in life. Hope they make them for a few years and/or this inspire different similar cars.
@TheSmokingTire can you go in the highest gear all the time? Can you take off in 6th gear? Does it bug like in a gas powered car?
Yes, it does bog, fake, but simulates being in the wrong gear.
Hope you guys also do a review on the new 2024 Model 3 Performance!
If they ever offer a really good lease on these, I may have to jump on it. Never even driven an EV, but I want one. Plus the performance for the price seems really good (and I can fit my family of 4).
I’m on board, now make it smaller! I’m patiently waiting for a hot hatch performance EV to come out.
Looks strange seeing one in red. New color?
Cool car, great video
what are the price points? cant you buy 2 hyundais for the price of 1 porche macan? maybe it dates me but when i was buying tiburons and elantras you could get 2 or 3 of them for the price of the most basic porsche.
I cant believe it. I am thinking of getting one. I agree the sounds is what makes un EV like vehicle been an EV.
Somewhere in Porsche HQ they are putting together a ‘gearbox/engine/ exhaust mode’ package for the Mecan EV, yours for $4000. Sir / madam.
Great job, gents, as ever. Testament to how far Hyundai/Kia have come for them to be genuinely compared to Porsche. Also, appreciate your objective, non-ideological, honest reviews.
I have a Kia EV6 GTLINE-S at the moment. This will be my next car unless something better comes out in the next couple of years.
Sick review this is an EV I’d like to turo
You have to be careful critiquing the adjustability of the system, lest Hyundai simply remove the ability to adjust most settings. I understand you are critical of the confusing interface due to the unintuitive menu structure (as most reviews have stated), but it's important to clarify that you also appreciate what the adjustability adds to the car. It might make more sense to offer a "standard" drive mode menu for most people and quick selection, with a number of factory preset modes on one screen. Then an option for "advanced settings" which lets you tweak all the individual components, such as fake engine sound profile, steering, suspension, regen, etc.--while also improving that advanced menu to make navigating to the individual settings to be more direct and intuitive.
That rattle is a bump stop that needs to be fixed at the dealership. Btw in Phx the battery does not get good range at all.
I feel like the “menu bloat” is a reverse psychology tactic. They probably figured if they released the car with too few modes people might complain and decided to just play it safe and let the public decide what they want and don’t want.
What about the GV60? I test drove one a few weeks back and was impressed by the lux feel and refinement. I think it's a good middle ground for a daily, and if you buy one that's just one year old (2023), the Performance can be had for below $45k. I wouldn't want to be the first owner who eats $30k in depreciation over 1 year/6k miles on any of these cars (Macan included).
I fricken love this thing. Hyundai have evolved from churning out shitboxes en masse up to the verge of cutting edge. Wild!
What was the main concern for me outside of the pricing being worse than a new model? Three performance was the range. The range is absolute garbage. I ended up with a 24 model three performance and I could not be happier. I knew I would be happy though because I had a 23.
Next sponsor, roadside coffee enemas, helps to keep everything running smoothly!
“The Macan is very close to this, it’s like 90% as good dynamically….” But paying over $50k Plus more for a tech-lagging car just to drive around town? I just don't get it. 😂
This is a excellent ev by all accounts. Ticks every box , but will it suffer horrendous depreciation like all performance ev's , is the fly in the ointment if buying at sticker price.
There’s a tsb for the trunk rattle. Working so far
Porsche better be working so hard on these features.
is aero press made out of plastic ?
Perhaps Hyundai should produce tutorial videos to help customers navigate the complex menu structure. If I were a customer that would be a resource that I would draw upon
They have come a long way from their cars I remember in the 80's as a teenager. Will this vehicle become Iconic?
The mood of conversation is so different for americans and europeans. Setting aside their accent, you can tell this is american review. kind of fun.
This thing is awesome!!!!!!!!!!
Put an automatic transmission in a car, and it's completely ruined; but make every aspect of engagement fake, and suddenly it's an enthusiasts' car? Pick a lane!
if these things were golf-sized, i'd be sold
