    I think I remember reading about the disc scratching when played on the PS2 Slim. The issue was because of the lense's cable ribbon, it would get lifted up and scratch the disc. This problem was solved with later revisions of the PS2 Slim, like the SCPH-90001 which I have. Not sure about the other versions but it's a notorious problem that I can't believe Sony and their engineers didn't catch it before releasing the first PS2 Slim models! Heck, the SCPH-90001 PS2 Slim, it works great still after it's been sealed new for over a decade and I just opened it and started using the system just a few weeks ago. Games and its' own OS loads much more quickly compare to the old phat model that I had before the lens stop reading discs. I think they even glued the ribbon cable to the bottom since it always lays flat down there when I open the disc tray.

    It's funny to hear people call the PS2 as loud as a jet engine as a Dreamcast fan. That thing is the loudest console ever, and I never understood when people called the PS2 loud because the three I own are all pretty quiet. That being said, it just wouldn't be the same playing the Dreamcast without the loudest disc drive ever, it's all part of the experience.
    Thanks for this video, it was really cool to hear someone talk about their personal experiences with it!

      @@Dutchess5 there's a whole joke about the Dreamcast that you can't be scared in horror games because when something is about to scare you you'll hear the disc loading it before it ever pops up in games lol.
      And I'm happy to leave a comment, the few videos on this channel I've watched have really resonated with me. I'll definitely be keeping up with your content in the future ^_^

      It's really not that loud. Especially by todays standards. Modern consoles with much bigger fans are a lot louder.

    I've consistently played my FAT PS2 since childhood. It's still my favourite console and it still works great. The only issue I had was the disc read error and even then I would just hit reset on the console and the game would work fine. I've also never had a disc scratched by the console and I've had none of the other issues you talked about...until I bought a PS2 slim off a friend a couple years ago. Holy shit is that console buggy. THAT'S when I started having the issues. Glad she sold it to me for only $10 because I barely touch it.

      I'm relieved I'm not the only one who suffered with the slim PS2 model! It always seemed like the most random stuff always occurred to it. You were really lucky to get it from your friend at such a bargain, though. Thanks for taking the time to comment, btw! Really means a lot to me 😊

    I remember playing lots of games back when I had my PS2 Slim as a kid. The disc scratching was ultimately the bane of my existence back then, it would take me about a week (worse case) until I have to ask my parents to buy a new disc. I eventually grew a habit of spinning the disc slowly to hear for any possible scratching noise before turning it on. It took me 15 years later to learn that the ribbon cable connecting the optical lens was bending too much that it made contact with the disc as it's being read, thus explaining the consistent scratch ring I kept getting.

    • @Dutchess5
      @Dutchess5  4 месяца назад +1

      Wow! Well you just turned my world around with this comment 😂 I had no clue that the ribbon cable can cause the disc scratching issue. If we did know, it would've saved my parents a lot of money lol. Totally can relate to the anxiety of having to ask parents for another disc because the first one broke! Thanks so much for watching my video and leaving a comment 😊

    The slim always had way more issues for me. My fat PS2 broke and by that point I had a PS3 and never got it fixed, it got lost in all the moves. My friend immigrated and gave me his slim and IT HAD EVERY ISSUE IMAGINEABLE.
    Also Jak X is a cursed game. It just is. At one point my PS2 fell ONTO THE DISC CORNER FIRST and left a DENT in the disc. Every rented copy I tried had some issue. Jak X is the most cursed game I have ever come across in my whole life.

      That's so much bad luck, oh my goodness! 😂 So sorry you had to go through all that! I know what you mean though about having that *one* cursed game. For me, it was Bully. I can't remember how many times my brother had to buy a new disc because all of them kept freezing at a certain point in literally the SAME area EVERY time. Thanks for leaving a comment and watching my video! Means a lot to me 😊

  • @Manic_Panic

    The only hardware issue I had was the disc tray being loose after a few years, I had to put a heavy book on top of it so the disc wouldn't randomly stop and freeze the game for a few seconds. It was a Slim PS2.
    Everything else that broke was either my fault (dualshock 2) or it was third party garbage like those 64mb memory cards. I'm surprised people had so many issues with the PS2. Even my Action Replay Max disc was cool with my console's disc drive, no errors on boot.

    • @Dutchess5
      @Dutchess5  4 месяца назад

      A heavy book? Yikes! 😂 It is crazy weird how the PS2 had so many weird, random issues. But you're definitely right. A lot of stuff happened because of third party gear. I’ve had.. some PS2 problems during my life. When i was younger i had an early fat model (one of the awfully loud ones). It was NEVER able to read CD based games for some weird reason. I had another fat model, it was a later one - though its demise was caused by my niece kicking it accidentally when the disc tray was out, jamming it and making it unable to close. How fun lol

    I think I was blissfully unaware of the PS2s defects when growing up with it, I think it was due to my age at the time, but I always just assumed it was user error of some kind (mostly blamed my siblings)
    Good video, I think many people do forget that this console did have its fair share of issues. Personally, I wasn't aware of the disk-drive issue and always just blamed it on user error. Overall, informative video, keep it up.

      Thanks for the lovely comment! 😁 Glad you enjoyed watching. Don't get me wrong, the PS2 is, I think, one of the greatest consoles of all time but it definitely had it's fair share of annoying issues. Doesn't detract at all from the overall experience. My childhood was a joy because of it! 😊

    The wired cable controller kicks close to home. The cord was usually streched to the maximum due to my friend's setup at the time, the console was no stranger to being plug out of the a/c midsession. So much so the cable started to tear apart and show what was beneath that black rubber.
    Never really had a problem with the jey engine fan since he had a slim model, and the discs were mostly cheap pirated copies so we didn't mind much if some game disc broke. When the discs start to show scratches or any minor inconvenience the PS2 didn't want to read it, we just had to clean it somehow until it worked. Or fix the internal reader which was prone to be unstable, more or less the same happenned with the PS1.

    • @Dutchess5
      @Dutchess5  4 месяца назад +1

      Hah! The struggle is real with that wired controller. 😂 I definitely appreciated how it allowed me to game more comfortably instead of sticking close to the TV screen, but the downside of it wasn't all that pretty lol. Interesting! When my family had the big PS2, we barely had any issues with it until the power supply unit stopped working (which probably was an easy fix looking back at it now, but oh well. Hindsight is 20/20 lol). It was when we switched to the slim, that's when all hell started breaking loose in my house! 🤣 I appreciate you commenting, means a lot to me! 😊

      The Slim still blows my mind. I have a 9000X model too, so it's even smaller. They somehow took the already tiny PS2 Slim, and then made it smaller so the power supply was internal. It's crazy.

  • @Mayo311

    RUclips algorithm brought me here! I'd like to add some extra stuff to what you said: Not all PS2 models had the same issues, but the most notably ones are the lens dying (this is usually due to people not being efficient at burning backup discs, thus wearing the drive lens faster) which was more prone to happen on FAT PS2s than Slim's. However, the PS2 Slim is the console that had most of the issues: Scratching discs most of the time, the power button hardening all of sudden, it had issues at keeping the console cool (given how compact the console was, It's not even that surprising), and if you're one of /those/, having no HDD port unless you resorted to soldering or slow USB can be a chore.
    Despite that, I subbed to your channel. Hope to see more of your content, with much better quality in future!

    • @Dutchess5
      @Dutchess5  4 месяца назад +1

      Welcome! I'm so glad the algorithm lead you here 😊 I didn't know some of the stuff you shared with me, so that's really cool to know now. That's one of the best parts about making RUclips videos, honestly. I learn a lot from my viewers too, which is always such a joy for me. 😁 Never heard of the power button hardening, though. That sounds terrifying to go through! What would cause something like that to happen? Thanks a bunch for taking the time to leave such a nice, constructive comment 😊 I'm hoping my quality keeps getting better with time, too! Hopefully I won't disappoint! 😆

      @@Dutchess5 For some things I would suggest you to take a look at ConsoleMods Wiki, it also talks about different console models and their issues, you'd be surprised to see how many revisions some consoles got! It's also a nice lead in case you plan on future purchases. The Power button being stiff on PS2 Slims is mainly because of poor quality, or dust getting in there. There's a couple of Reddit posts about this, but also two PS2 Slims of two that ended in my hands had this issue as well.
