  • Hi everyone, it's Dutchess! Today I'll be discussing video game remasters and remakes. In this video, I'm talking about the rise in popularity for remasters of classic video games and how the oversaturation of remasters are dulling the creativity of the video game industry. the original Prince of persia trilogy was my childhood jam, I used to play hours on end, with the current state of ubisoft and the reveal of the Sands of time remastered, my initial reaction was: ah shit, here we go again..

    Personally, if I own the original game, I don't buy remakes, remasters, rereleases, reimaginings, rewhatevers, because if I want to revisit the game, I'll just do exactly that. The only exception has been the Devil May Cry HD Collection, and that's because the button mapping in the PS2 version of the first game was completely stupid and they fixed that. I do also find it odd that all of these terms have different meanings, and while most people have pretty strong opinions on what each one means, nobody can seem to agree on those opinions; that might be what's led to the inconsistency in quality for these kinds of things.

    Personally id rather have a company saying that they are re-releasing or porting an older game. It feels like theres just a sour connotation with the title "remaster" since almost every company is doing one now.
    Whenever someone tells me that a game is being re-released, im usually praying its either a direct port or remake. Time and time again almost every remaster i play feels too disappointing, slight upgraded visuals dont deserve a full pricetag. Atleast if annoucned as a port, it more times than not a decently reduced price. And Remakes, if done right, as seen with RE2, shadow of the colossus, and final fantasy 7, i believe are super worth the investment. The issue again lies within the oversaturation of unoriginality in the pursuit of the quick "cash grab".
    Anyways great video!!

      Yes, you definitely get it! Remasters definitely have their place in the industry but it's gotten to a point now where it just feels like it's being abused. A game just turned over 10 years old today? Slap some upscaled textures on it, call it a remaster, and sell it for $65.99! It's *ridiculous.* Companies are definitely better off making remakes like FFVII and RE2. It's just more enjoyable to play. Thanks a bunch for watching my video, btw! Really means a lot to me! 😘

    The problem is that with some games it's more difficult to remaster them because the original textures and assets need to be completely remade. That takes a lot of effort and may force a developer to forgo additional content.

    • @Dutchess5
      @Dutchess5  6 месяцев назад +1

      That's very true, I hadn't considered that point of view at all. It is difficult to remake textures in high resolution, and must take a lot of time. Though I guess that gives developers more of a reason to spend more time on perfecting remasters/remakes before releasing them. Thanks for watching my video! 😊

    There's a typo in the thumbnail, but I think it's intentional to reflect that games released nowadays don't have the i-s dotted or the t-s crossed.

    Yes I fear this as well. We have already seen big studios and publicly owned studios caving into shareholder pressure and stifling innovation. There is a general fear of failure that game devs have now which causes them to be hesitant to do anything new. I look at franchises like Madden or the Sims and you can definitely see a stagnation and lack of new ideas.
    The Master Chief collection I think is the best example of providing a great remastered experience and adding value enough to make it worth it. Those games couldn't run on the new hardware and they brought them up to date and even allow you to switch back and forth between the graphics of the original and the remaster on the fly during gameplay.
    There is a part of me that is nostalgic for those games of my youth, so I can see the appeal, and I also want devs to make money in hopes that they can find new projects and experiences but I fear the corporate greed will incentivise low effort money grabs more often than we get a Superb reimagining like System Shock.
    Great video!

      Great comment! Thanks so much for watching my video. Your support means so much to me! :) I've heard a ton of good things about the Master Chief Collection, and I've been meaning to check it out since I never played a Halo game (grew up on Playstation and Nintendo exclusively!) But yeah, it's definitely possible to do remasters/remakes right. Its just a shame that companies are resorting to it as "quick cash grabs" instead of taking their time to craft a truly compelling product. You made a ton of great insights with this comment, I enjoyed reading what you had to say! :D

    Yeah, remakes can certainly be hit or miss. I was delighted when they remade the Master System classic 'Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap.' If it's handled by people who actually value the original then it should be good, but if it's just a shameless cash-grab...

    • @Dutchess5
      @Dutchess5  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yep, You're right! A lot of remasters are really great because the company handling it knew what they were doing and were actually invested in making a high quality product. If a company doesn't really care though, it really shows. Thanks so much for commenting and watching my video, btw! :) So glad you enjoyed watching

    I'm actually willing to be patient with a company when a remaster grants access to a game in a new generation or for a whole new audience. I have to admit, though, that most of the time, remasters boil down to an easy cash in for companies. TLOU 2 remastered is legitimately a misnomer and a perfect example of the worst form of remaster.
    and remakes are a whole 'nother story 😅

    I always find it frustrating that the games people want remastering, don't get remastered! Simpsons hit and run for one. Personally id love the old Burnout Games (i know paradise did, but i feel like the older PS2 games would be amazing as a combo pack!) Theres a lot of ps3 era games that should and could get a remaster! Nice video

    Well there definitely has to be a balance. That being said I think free market will decide, if a remaster is bad it will do poorly, if its good then it will do good (unless you are GTA trilogy I guess lol) new innovative games are important but so is preserving old games on modern hardware. For enthusiasts sure we got emulation but I doubt the average gamer will want to mess with that.
    Anyway great video for once youtube algorithm granted me some good channel. :D

      So glad you enjoyed watching! :D I totally get where you're coming from. The free market will weed out the bad remasters from the good ones. What is concerning though is how all these poorly made remasters still keep getting released in the first place. Stuff like the Chrono Cross remaster, Final Fantasy VIII, Harvest Moon remakes, etc., for instance. Shows a horrible lack of originality or quality imo.
      Thanks a bunch for taking the time to watch my video! :) I really truly appreciate it!
