I had a 3 door black mk5 with a manual and the smaller wheels when they first came out. I’ve had a DSG mk6 and a manual mk7 since then and I think back to my mk5 the most fondly. I adored that car.
I think the MkV is the best all round GTI, and people are beginning to realize this, particularly as a fun buy for a (young?) person who does haven't have a lot of extra cash for a fancy car. Great blend of style, performance, safety and all round usability. As Clarkson commented when it was released "It may not be all the car you want but it is all the car you need."
Yep im currently looking for a MK5 with a 6 speed manual. Want a fun turbo car to mess around with. Was thinking of a Focus ST but hate the interior (the plaid cloth GTI interior is the best fkn thing ever!) And the STs are kind of expensive seeing as how the oldest you can buy is a 2013. I can pick up a mk5 for 5 grand which means i can pay cash for it, continue with having no car payment (car payments are the worst, my friend just locked himself in for 8 years.... 8 bloody years) so i think ill be happy with the Golf. I can do most of my own repair work and most of the problems with the MK5 arent too big of a deal. I have another car as well so ita no big deal if one of them id down for repair for a few days or weeks.
Yep thats my plan. Downpipe, full exhaust, intake and tuning to start off with. Later, after an engine refresh (i bought a spare engine to rebuild) im gojng to do bigger turbo, intercooler and injectors and see if i can get it to about 350hp at the wheels. That should be plenty and more than enough to get me in some trouble lol
Love my Mk5., it’s my favourite GTI, such a well-balanced car, and the engine pulls at any revs, feels like more than 197bhp. Unmodified ones are getting rare so my advice is not to do anything you can’t put back to stock. Everyone wants a Mk5 now and I think values are set to rise..

To hell with the manual... you purchased the GTI with the "proper" transmission! Enjoy the drive with the paddle shifters, or just cruise, allowing the DSG do the work if you don't feel like shifting... it's the BEST of both worlds. BE HAPPY with your purchase and tell those ragging you over needing a "manual" to go pound sand! I used to "feel" like you. Then I got a Mk7 with the DSG and I've never been happier. Matter of fact, if I changed to manual now I would be VERY unhappy. VW DSGs RULE! They are faster and shifter better anyway.
Still have my mk5 GTI (14 years old) been running stage 2 APR tune for the past 9 years. The only thing that irritates me is the headlights, shit from the start, need the xenon option. Tune & down pipe are the best two changes to make. Traction from standing start (particularly in the wet) is a bit of an issue once you tune it up; but I can live with that for all the extra performance elsewhere.
