Bought my 2008 Mk 5 four door with DSG in United Grey with leather brand new. I still ❤ driving it to this day 17 years and 170k miles later. It just does everything so well! I plan on keep daily driving it for as long as I can and if and when the engine eventually goes, I plan on dropping in a newer 2.0 liter from a GTI or an Audi. Don’t want it tuned for any more power from the factory. It’s just enough to have fun, but not enough to get into too much trouble.
I drove 12 years in a 2007 Golf MK 5 Gti (2010-2022) After that period I bought a Golf MK 7 Gti from 2014. Still missing my former car... Front seats and sitting position in Golf 5 Gti are much better, just perfect.

Back when these were new, I had a Nitrod performance meter that would measure 0-60 and quarter miles quite accurately. I did countless launches in a manual and could consistently get 5.9s to 60. Standard, not modified. Spectacular car.
My wife has a couple of Golfs, she dailies a GTI MK5, completely standard, manual, tartan interior, original double DIN stereo/6 CD stack and aircon are probably the only extras from factory. It does everything and still goes like stink. Its a keeper as I don't think theres anything else available value for money, fun and practicality. Only downside its red and its hard to keep it looking nice, but after a light detail and a bit of black polish on the trim and wheels its a stunning looking car. End of video edit, my favourite hot hatch is the integrale Evo2, I'm very lucky to own one but its a garage queen, I have no intention ever having to use it as a daily driver.
Absolutely love my Mk5, for me it’s a near perfect car, with only a couple of upgrades needed to make it timeless: most importantly a modern head unit with car play etc. And secondly, a mild tune, if you want to keep up with later model more powerful cars. Only small gripe is the slightly underdone rear end styling but who cares. While a lot of people say it looks dated now, I think it's aging nicely and with its curves and humps it's quite unique. The more angular styling of later GTIs while very nice and more cohesive than the 5, is also a bit more generic and 'on trend'. The Mk7 is a great looking car but it doesn't have its own cheeky identity like the 5. The Mk5's front end styling is my favourite of all the GTIs. And when you see the road open up ahead of you it’s like the car speaks to your inner child: “go on, you know you want to”
Got mine exactly the same style dsg super clean and man do I love it I got mine when I was 16 now 19 it was owned by an old lady who got it serviced every 6 months it had only 37,000 kms on it witch is amazing haven’t touched anything on it i am looking at getting it turned but i almost fell bad for doing that 😂
I love a MK5 golf GTI. I went from a Renault Sport Clio RS 200 to a MK5 Golf GT TDI BKD 140 as i wanted the fuel economy with long journeys. Although i cant talk from a GTI perspective the MK5 is one of the best golf's out there , The MK5 Chassis handle extremely well even for a slightly bigger car than the clio. Feels very much like a go kart when lowered , Steering is lovely and responsive and is a lot more refined and generally safer feeling at higher speeds. I was looking at a GTI but i then found the GT TDI with a stage 1 and all supporting mods/Most of the parts off of a GTI and it would give a MK5 GTI a run for it's money. Plus cheaper insurance/Tax and easily 50-60mpg... VW really nailed the MK5 golf's
MkV is and always will be my favourite of them all. It opened a new era for GTI, it can be quick, practical, it's good looking and even nowadays - modern. Whatever you said is like I'd be listening to myself talking to someone, why have I chosen MK5 GTi as a family daily driver. Utterly fabulous cars with good tuning potential. A bit shame you haven't mentioned ED30, but I'm still happy to see people like you, with a vast knowledge and driving experience, enjoying MK5 GTi.
Bought my first MK5 GTI a few days ago under 4k€. Manual, stage 1 remap (approx. 195kw). Has Eibach springs and came with the R32 exhaust. I'm surprised how much of a performance car you could find on that sort of a budget and now also am planning to go on a few trackdays in the summer which is also a dream come true! :)
got one for 3k in near mint condition, manual, and 2 door. just an oil change and 1 other part for the high pressure fuel pump. Its a blast to drive and I dont think I'll be trading it for another car in the near future. perfect car
There is one big thing to note about the MK5 Golf GTI and its engine. The engine burns a lot of oil. Expect to fill up the engine with a full liter bottle of oil approximately every 2000km to 5000km.
Great review Sid. Have a couple of Porsches (964 c2 and 991 Carrera T), but the daily driver is a Mk5 GTI 3 door manual, Monza wheels. As you say, OEM with a scorpion exhaust - absolutely perfect and so much car for the money.
Had mine for over a year now. 3 door with tartan seats, manual box, lighter 17 inch wheels, stage 1 - 245bhp and I love it. A lot of fun to drive! btw. wind deflectors unfortunately are a must in these as there is often standing water on the roof after rain and if you open window when driving the car and turn, the water from the roof will get inside the car onto the electric window controller buttons It's hard to find a better driving car for the money and it should hold the value from now.
Picked up something similar 2 years ago, 2010 Scirocco GT so essentially a mk5 GTI with wide hips. 73k on the clock, DSG and leather heated seats. Honestly I wonder why I didn’t get myself in a VW sooner, just all round an amazing car
Steering is electric, not hydraulic. I bought my MKV GTI new in July 2008 and still love it. Rear sway bar upgrade, better dogbone, Stage 1 tune - BEE-UDIFUL. Can't bring myself to sell it, don't know what would be an upgrade.
Have had my mk5 gti for 6 years now I'm only the 2nd owner and have a full vw service record. Just clocked 100k, and it's sweet as a bun. Just completed an 800 odd mile round trip to Cornwall . (Weeks holiday) visited many places.
The diamond cut 18" wheels are the Detroit model, had them on my mk6 GTI. The Monza are the ones without diamond cut, which also come in 17" Nice video Sid, love a nice mk5, such a modern classic now.
Great video mate. Nearly brought one of these myself a few years ago at an auction but got outbid by £100. A few weeks later I ended up buying my personal favourite hot hatch, the Civic Type R EP3 which I still have but the mk5 Golf GTI is a close 2nd for me. Would still quite like one in white.
This is my type of content. In the market for an MK7 GTI. I drive an MK7 right now witch I don’t really need / want to get rid of. I’ve been thinking of buying an MK5 to enjoy throughout the summer and flip at the end to get used to the power and GTI life so I could look around for my MK7 replacement before next year summer … if that makes sense. This video kind of sealed the deal.
Interesting to hear your opinion on the Mk5 GTI. I think it's the best one of the lot too. The Mk6 is just a facelift (an arguably way better looking car though) but essentially the same and the Mk7, while objectively probably the best GTI or even Golf ever made, for me personally already too synthetic feeling. And the Mk8? Well, let's don't even start with that... On a sidenote though : the Mk5 doesn't got hydraulic steering.
Unfortunately, the MK5 is a little difficult to find in America. Currently I’m driving a MK7.5, dsg. And love it. But, a MK5 would be a great addition. Thanks, RickGTI….. 🇺🇸🌴
Love my MK5. Bought mine back in 2012 with 89,000 or so on the odometer and haven't had a single regret. Are they expensive to work on? Yes! But you pay to play and boy is it fun. First mod I did to it was the roller cam follower. Set me back a good chunk but it was by far the best money I've spent on her. Great review!
what would you suggest getting done, hoping to get one and run about 250 and just get some nice breaks & coilovers on it to get it stopping and handling nicely but anything youd really reccomend? ty
@soon8548 Well that depends on your goals. Do you plan on keeping the car long term? Trust me, once you start modding, it becomes a slippery slope quickly, so be tactful where and how you spend your money. First thing I'd do with it is check service records and give it a good inspection. Have the cam follower looked at asap. If you are mechanically inclined, I would highly recommend becoming familiarized with this car and do as much work on your own as possible. It will save you lots of money. If you plan on 250, there are several tuning options on the market that will get you extra power you will enjoy. Unitronic, APR are just a few examples. From there, the options are plentiful with brakes and suspension. Do your research and join some message boards.
@@eoll6322 yeah I’m a trained mechanic but haven’t worked on a car for a while as I’ve not need one & got family that work in garages so can get anything done for relatively decent prices so anything is within grasp. I’ll likely have it for a good few years just want a nice car that can do everything with a decent bit of poke as my last car was a seat Ibiza cupra with the 1.8T pushing about 300. Thanks for the heads up on the cam follower, will get that checked as it’s serviced
The MK5 GTI are really great cars and performance wise they are amazing really fast ive owned one for years and their the most fun u can get in a car for really cheap little pocket rockets they are the only issue is they are very bad on fuel it drinks a lot of fuel when putting the power down or even driving normally in my opinion other then that my car has never given me any issues its worth going for a low mileage on in my opinion just make sure it has good service history
I've been left with the weirdest feeling after owning the Mk5 GTI. It was the first car I bought for myself after 7 years of driving the family's bulletproof Hyundais. So the excitement and specialness was absolutely unreal. Mine had issues EVERY single month I owned it and was just a pure headache and churn of anxiety to own by the end of my period with it, BUT the funny thing is 7 years later I do stil remember how frankly perfect it felt as a package in the collective few weeks it worked 😂. I've regretted owning it BUT if I won the lottery I'd actually buy an untouched and cherish it!
@@tadassmolskas3014 mine was just under 10 years old at the time and 80k so I think I expected a lot more from it, but it is indeed the risk of buying a 10 year old used car eh!
Mine is now 15 years old and nothing has gone wrong......Stage 1 tune. Of course it has had cam belts and DSG service and brakes, and a PCV valve assembly. Very happy.
I want to buy a GTI as a 2nd car. Torn on which generation to get. Not a new one obviously. I personally think the mk4 20th anniversary is the best looking of them all, but i know the performance is frowned upon. Whats the maximum milage i should consider? Advice?
What do think about the 2019 GTI Mark VII? I love the car but had some issues which were fixed under the 6 year factory warranty. I did an APR Stage 1 ECU and TCU Upgrade.
I’ve had mk3 gti’s and a mk4 20v turbo. I really liked them. I’ve never driven a mk5 but I’d imagine it to be awesome seeing as literally everyone says the mk4 was so bad in comparison 😅
Just got a 5 door manual one in red. Drives like a brand new car its insane how tight it feels. Looks timeless also as you said. Only gripe is mine needed a cambelt change. The paint is also faded a little so needs constant buffing to keep fresh. The radio has no ACC by default or canbus decoder box so i needed to fuse tap a new ACC. The headlights i had to change also as it had some naff aftermarket ones on. Oh and it came with a decat, not my cuppa tea so been sourcing a sports cat for it. Not the biggest problems to have though :). Fantastic cars recommend to anyone.
I want one. I’m annoyed I never got one 5 years ago but seeing people’s comments on this video picking them up still in good nick gives me hope, enjoy the car man!
@@conorf8091 Cheers i am, here in the UK they are plentiful. There seem to always be 50+ for sale on popular websites for sub £5. The real issue is getting one that has not been wrote off and put back on the road with bad repairs. Or finding one with a fully working engine. Allot have oil pump/cam belt/chain issues or turbo failure. Its a bit unfortunate because with so many for sale you come across these issues allot that are being hidden. I had to look through a good 20 odd cars before settling on the one i got. But even this one had some minor issues, but all sorted now i think i am at a total of £4k spent for a 113k very good example (including the car).
Sid, your videos are absolutely superb, the quality of the video is fantastic. Always fancied one of the these, although they are the generally the best all rounder, and arguably the most capable. I found them underwhelming and a little bit flat to drive. They just do it all too well for me, I walked away with the Astra VXR, and have owned several since. Even though the Golf is better in ever single way, the VXR was the far more enjoyable car for me, the sound, the torque steer is an absolute hoot! Keep up the good work pal.
Perfect summary of the Golf strong points. Love my 7.5R for all the same reasons. Wish my R had hydraulic steering, the electric steering in the R is dead. Absolutely love the DSG. Do not want the mk8 touch screen, so I'm sticking with my 7.5R.

Owned two, manual Ed30 and standard DSG. Unbelievable do it all cars, still up there with the best 20 years later near enough
Got mine exactly the same style dsg super clean and man do I love it
I got mine when I was 16 now 19 it was owned by an old lady who got it serviced every 6 months it had only 37,000 kms on it witch is amazing haven’t touched anything on it i am looking at getting it turned but i almost fell bad for doing that 😂
I love a MK5 golf GTI.
If interested people can still get good Golf MK5 GTI from Japan for very cheap..we have these flooding Botswana roads.
VW never stated that the DSG is service free, according to VW u have to change the DSG Oli every 60.000KM.
That’s a very nice combo 👌🏽🔥
That was my first sports car at 22. 9 year later owner many serious cars. I want another one it was my favourite car. Great review
Had mine for over a year now. 3 door with tartan seats, manual box, lighter 17 inch wheels, stage 1 - 245bhp and I love it. A lot of fun to drive!
btw. wind deflectors unfortunately are a must in these as there is often standing water on the roof after rain and if you open window when driving the car and turn, the water from the roof will get inside the car onto the electric window controller buttons
It's hard to find a better driving car for the money and it should hold the value from now.
What mileage and how much did you pay?
@@mmja1244 176k Kms and paid 6k euros for it
Picked up something similar 2 years ago, 2010 Scirocco GT so essentially a mk5 GTI with wide hips.
Glad you enjoyed the car
Thanks bro 👊🏽❤️
You did just nice tasteful mods my man. What power is it running as it didn't sound stock haha.
Is your mk5 gti stock

The diamond cut 18" wheels are the Detroit model, had them on my mk6 GTI. The Monza are the ones without diamond cut, which also come in 17"
Nice video Sid, love a nice mk5, such a modern classic now.
Agreed the mk5 and mk7 are the best Gti's ever made
thanks for the sidenot, mk5 indeed has an electrical power steering system.
My colleague, back in the day, was the first one in our small town to have this car, in this colour & DSG. I'll never forget my experience of the MkV
Unfortunately, the MK5 is a little difficult to find in America. Currently I’m driving a MK7.5, dsg. And love it. But, a MK5 would be a great addition. Thanks, RickGTI….. 🇺🇸🌴
I have a mk4 Polo GTi and the only reason I didn’t get the Golf Gti over it was because I couldn’t afford the Manual. I love love this car
This really makes me miss my mk5 GTI was a blast to drive in manual
Great to see a RUclipsr taking sign language seriously. Good for you Sid
Great Video! I make MK5 Golf content myself and its a stuggle to find great videos like this nowadays. Well done!
Hard to find a good unmolested example these days, 30mpg is a bit of a stretch and the road tax is getting a bit spicy.
had a mk5 for years.. ive had every gen gti except mk8. my favorites were mk2 and mk7. the mk4 r32 is also in my garage
I would like one with an orange paint job and with some cheap spoiler.
Rinsed af by the apnas but for a reason. Very good value for the money. Also wow the camerawork is fantastic
Thanks bro 👊🏽👊🏽
The MK5 GTI are really great cars and performance wise they are amazing really fast ive owned one for years and their the most fun u can get in a car for really cheap little pocket rockets they are the only issue is they are very bad on fuel it drinks a lot of fuel when putting the power down or even driving normally in my opinion other then that my car has never given me any issues its worth going for a low mileage on in my opinion just make sure it has good service history
Nice to see you here Sid, hope you're well
All is well thanks, I hope you’re well too!
Just how it is with cars over 10 years old unfortunately plus a bit of bad luck.
Very happy.
@@einfelder8262 that's epic!!! I think it's one of the greatest all round cars ever! Loved mine to pieces when it worked, I must have had a lemon
I want to buy a GTI as a 2nd car. Torn on which generation to get. Not a new one obviously. I personally think the mk4 20th anniversary is the best looking of them all, but i know the performance is frowned upon. Whats the maximum milage i should consider? Advice?
I bought mines not long ago got it for 7k on 60k miles and 1 owner ,never had so much fun driving a car
Great video. Can you do more of the car vids collabing with Ricky? Some of them when you were driving different BMs were hilarious 😂
Cheers!
More to come!!
What do think about the 2019 GTI Mark VII? I love the car but had some issues which were fixed under the 6 year factory warranty. I did an APR Stage 1 ECU and TCU Upgrade.
My 2019 GTI is DSG.
The mk5 is the return back to being a real GTI imo and arguably the most pure modern GTI. I love the MK2 as well.
You have to drive like a grandad to get that 40mpg+ 😂😂
I owned a MK5 GTi Pirelli Edition for 10 years. Amazing bit of kit
Great to see you back Sid :)
Thank you 👊🏽
My uncle owned one of these from new in 2007 black, DSG, with cream leather seats. Very nice.
I’ve had mk3 gti’s and a mk4 20v turbo. I really liked them. I’ve never driven a mk5 but I’d imagine it to be awesome seeing as literally everyone says the mk4 was so bad in comparison 😅
Mk4 1.8 t they were brilliant cars, drivers car
Another Great Video Sid, Keep up coming!!
What mileage and how much did you pay?
@@mmja1244 113k on clock i paid £2900.
Thats one clean MK5
Sid, your videos are absolutely superb, the quality of the video is fantastic. Always fancied one of the these, although they are the generally the best all rounder, and arguably the most capable. I found them underwhelming and a little bit flat to drive. They just do it all too well for me, I walked away with the Astra VXR, and have owned several since. Even though the Golf is better in ever single way, the VXR was the far more enjoyable car for me, the sound, the torque steer is an absolute hoot!
Keep up the good work pal.
Excellent video. I personally have a manual, red, 3dr Mk5 GTI and love it. Not sure I have ever got it as high as 40mpg though!
My right foot is made of lead, I don't often see 30 lol
Perfect summary of the Golf strong points. Love my 7.5R for all the same reasons. Wish my R had hydraulic steering, the electric steering in the R is dead. Absolutely love the DSG. Do not want the mk8 touch screen, so I'm sticking with my 7.5R.
Glad to here that you would’ve preferred the manual. I have 2007 6 speed manual same color but with the tartan seats. A timeless beauty that is a blast to drive!
Old skool golf they were alright back in the day
As someone who has owned a MK5 GTI for years... that's just awful that the later versions are somehow worse. The Golf peaked at the MKIV...
Awsome, I had a edition30 gti, manual with stage1 and resonated miltek! I had the car for 10 years and sold it at the beginning of the year! It never missed a beat, still miss her now 😢a

This is the car that made me buy my 2012 Golf 6 GTi 35 Edition. Man…
Not the best by a long shot, but re ignited the hatchback craze. I have a MkV auto cross car and a MkVII track car . The 7 is by far a better handling , more secure car. It has much more potential performance wise.
If you've got the spare cash, get one. If you already have one, don't let it go. Just like me. I am in my 16th year with my white MK5 GTI manual.
Good cars and video brilliant. Not sure where youve been looking regarding prices though! This car would be £5k -£6k at least
