I brought it to so many mechanics. I bled it so many times, swapped the master cylinder, removed the fluid limiter that slows down how quickly it engages, you name it. The only thing left was a slave cylinder, which would require pulling the entire bell housing off and would probably have taken 5+ hours of mechanic time just to get to, and if you're doing all that you had better swap the whole clutch, and even then you aren't guaranteed that that will fix the problem if it's crank endplay, which is basically a "throw the engine away" problem. I've had my 2007 GTI for a year now. Put 30,000miles on it in my year of ownership. The poor thing had a previous owner in the form of a high school kid, which means the car was abused, and poorly maintained. I probaby spent $3k putting everything to how it should be, which is to say: perfect. I had to replace the turbo, radiator, timing belt kit, valve cover with the gasket, PCV valve, cam chain and tensioner, oil filter housing, several vacuum lines, MAP sensor, MAF sensor, and a full exhaust system since he cut the old one out. No problem! But best of luck! And from being a vw tech I’ve seen all the goods and bads. If you stay up to date on maintenance you’ll be fine! Most German cars depend on their crucial maintenance
My father bought this car in 2007. He passed it on to me last year, as I realized that the dsg oil had never been changed and it also had a leak, causing it to have lost 2 liters+ of oil. Guess what, it didn’t brake down. Fixed the leak and works like new with 245.000km
@@RatchetWrenches it gets the car to another level! First of all you are gonna need some extra upgrades to get the most out of the K04, like an intercooler (s3 would do!), high pressure fuel pump etc. Bigger brakes should also be considered if you drive aggressively! Software upgrade for the dsg should also be installed, in order for your gearbox to handle the extra torque. A well built mk5 dsg K04 can compete with much higher cars!
My MKV is a 2008 and it has almost 230,000 miles on it and I live in Chicago area! Just keep changing the fluids, as scheduled, and keep up with its scheduled maintenance and it's good. I've the 3-Door, moonroof, DSG transmission. summer tires/winter tires. I'm going to have H&R Touring Cup Kit installed soon. I should've done an APR Stage 2 upgrade long ago but I didn't have the money for it. Keep doing what you're doing, man!..

I've mine since new , 16 years now . Only recent engine misfire and a fuel injector was replaced. Other than that same clutch and gearbox and everything else . About 120,000 miles.
I love my GTI. I impulse bought it when it was for sale a dealer in town, the interior is solid af but it has some rust and the paint clear coat is peeling off. I've had it for a few months. Also I have a baby on the way so I put it on sale as the boot wasn't quite big enough and I wanted 2k more for it and had a buyer ready, however I test drove some SUVs and station wagons and on a beautiful day I said fuck it, I'm going to keep it and make it work as it was just amazing on a nice day. It has chip upgrade too and a throaty filter so it's just fun to thrash it every chance I get. Wish it had rear parking sensors and a sunroof but I am very very happy about it. If my entrepreneurial projects succeed I will source a mint normal GTI Mk5 and keep it forever. Also, fun fact, Henry Catchpole, an accomplished and highly regarded car journalist from UK, stated that the GTI Mk5 has one of the best steering wheels of all time and I have to agree! Go ahead and buy these cars guys, they are amazing do it all kind of cars!
Congrats on the baby! And thank you for this comment! I couldn’t agree more about the steering wheel haha. But that’s awesome you’re gonna make it work! One of the best cars to drive honestly
Yes a lot of people often overlook upgrading brakes but a good rule of thumb is the faster you are able to go, the faster you have to stop. Good point!
I had a MK7 R with DSG and I have a stage 2 MKV gti Manual.... had to replace the dsg @45k.... I love my manual gti so i sold the R.... manuals are seriously way more fun and do not require tune for the trans.
No way really? The dsg gone so early, I’m shocked that’s so uncommon. But yeah I mean you can’t beat the feeling of driving manual. Like paddles is fun of course but it’ll never be the same compared to stick.
@@RatchetWrenches I was shocked too but luckily Volkswagen replaced the transmission and the transfer case all for free.... they made sure my car was not modded of coarse lol. I have the 2008 Passat with the FSI and I feel like I'm always putting money in and something always is wrong. I never have had a check engine tho hahaha
The Mk5 with the FSI is damn near indestructible if you maintain it properly. You could floor it and shift your gears at 7000 rpm all over town 99% of the time and the only thing it'll hurt is your wallet because of the extra gas you'll have to buy XD. I've got about 106k miles on my GTI running a Custom stage 2+ (upgraded HPFP) high torque tune and dsg map that runs about 20-25 lbs of boost and essentially runs a race setup A/F ratio, and she's still rocking the original turbo. there are little things that usually need to get replaced every so often, like maybe your DV needs to be replaced/upgraded, maybe you need to replace you valve cover, etc which really isn't all too difficult or expensive if you're willing to do it yourself. The mk5 will give you the same amount of love back as you give it. Not only that but for a 4 banger, the FSI sounds amazing. It has this visceral, deep, screaming roar that not many other 4 cylinders have under WOT, and don't forget the DSG farts.
Biggest facts I’ve heard bahah. So true. Like as long as you maintain it, it’ll run like a charm. I love my FSi! And I whip it around town hence so many speeding tickets but still you can’t beat this engine/car.
I'm 15, and my dad recently bought a candy white 2009 mk5 GTI. It was pretty cheap, I don't remember the exact number, but it was cheap. It needs some work, the previous owner neglected it's maintenence, and we want to get everything fixed before driving it. So far it seems like a great car, reviews everywhere agree its wonderful. Personally I didn't really like the mk5's styling, but its started to grow on me. I would just do some color matching to the black plastic bumper, and side skirts. I also hate the way the fake fents look (around the fog lights), so would opening those vents do anything negative to the stock engine??
Yeah now these things are going for pretty cheap! But I agree the color matching will change the appearance big time! I’ve been meaning to do that. I actually switched my fake vents to ventilated ones and there wouldn’t be any harm in that. I doubt it but it could even be more helpful allowing more air flow into the engine. I doubt it’s much but fresh air is always better
@@RatchetWrenches It lasted longer than it should've, I replaced it with a refurb for only $1300.00. It's was already tuned and modded which wore the turbo out quickly, it's crazy fast now.

@@RatchetWrenches sadly enough I decided to take her out for a quick drive to the local hardware store. She needed to breathe. Been about 2 weeks or so. We are going through our SECOND winter here. But short story long. 5 mins inside the store. Come outside to discover I'm a hit and run victim now. Hoping I can hide the damage by just going full on widebody. Time will tell. Ty for responding btw. I dont think you could imagine how much that helped me remain positive today.
What's up. Agree with everything you said about the GTI. Im looking to do the timing belt and water pump on my.. 06 GTI. Do you know of any shops you would recommend.
Thanks! And honestly it depends on where you’re located. I’d suggest a European specialized shop or a dealer. I wouldn’t take it to a random shop because it’s a long job and it has to be done right.
Hi there, nice video. I always appreciated the quality and effort you put in these videos. I just have one question, maybe it might be sound familiar for you. Since last month when I bought my first MK5 GTI I have noticed there are some slooow coolant leaks on the transmission box. Every day when the engine is cold I stick my hand underhood to clean it. And it leaks even when not driving, I just left it overnight and checked in the morning and another fresh drop of leak was present. As you can see below, I have also some maroon "dirt" on the lower part of the brake boost vacuum pump (I think it's sealant, can't clean it, so I think maybe the last owner tried to seal the pump - he doesn't answer the phone or e-mails of course), and it leaks even more slowly, but it leaks engine oil (Soon I'll take the engine cover off, battery and check the sealing for that pump and replace it in the first place). But the coolant is not coming from that pump, because that pump is filled only with engine oil as humble mechanic showed in one of his fixing videos. Any idea where the coolant leak might come from? The engine is 2.0 TFSI, AXX engine code (european), 200HP stock. Brakes are working well, acceleration the same, nothing seems different than normal driving... Here's a video I made when I first saw the problem: ruclips.net/video/p9NvCTYBqIs/видео.html and this is a more recent video (where I learned to focus the camera first, then worry about the light) ruclips.net/video/n1q7HW_TgXM/видео.html and here are some photos: imgur.com/gallery/EFVzWdq and here some to form an idea where it's located: imgur.com/a/sucM7UB Cheers. edit: timing belt was last changed on September 2016 if this info makes any difference.
Claudiu B. Shit I just saw this but honestly there’s so many things that can cause that leak. It could be the thermostat since it’s over by there. Could be lines running to it. It’s so hard to diagnose things over videos and not seeing it in person so I don’t wanna mislead you but I’m sure there’s a pinhole or something in one of the coolant lines
@@RatchetWrenches, You're right. It seems to be coming from the thermostat. I hope it's just a line, and I don't have to change all of the case. I noticed that somehow it's coming from the connector in the video which is right under the brake boost vacuum pump, as it's wet and right after I clean the coolant, another two-three drops are falling on the transmission box exactly from the connector. But idk what is that connector for. Maybe it's a sensor for coolant and it has a bad sealing. Will check after this weekend (I have a long ride to do, so don't wanna touch anything before). Thanks and Cheers!
I bought a cpo mk7 and 3 weeks into owning it, the shifter module for the dsg went bad so idk if that was and luck or what but it made me question the reliability of my purchase
Hmm that’s interesting how many miles? It could honestly be just bad luck they tend to rarely fail like that. But since it’s a CPO do you get it replaced under warranty?
You said you were a Volkswagen mechanic in the video and I was wondering if it possible for the stock screen to display a digital speed read out just like the newer models?
What car do you have? A Gti or a base golf? They should operate once you click them, so either they’re not real paddles (installed on a golf) or you have an electrical issue that’s not telling the trans to shift when the click of the paddles is applied
Hey bro bro great video and new sub. I have an audi b6 a4 avant a mk4 gli and a mk5 gti 08 dsg 4 door white like yours. The only issue i have is this mechanical disengagement code switch causes my trans to act up every once in awhile. Any advise yoy can share please. Thanks
I've had my MK5 for 12 years now. Long history. I now have a swapped MK6 Golf R engine running a Precision 5858 turbo Stage 3 Custom tune. All I could say is it's very good reliable car. Before swapping the old FSI engine it never really failed on me. The only time I swapped an MK6 R engine was because of the engine blowing up when I went Stage 3 😁. The new R engine (CRZA FSI as well) has been great and could handle 450whp, stock internals. 👍 (Hence why it's called HALF_R_MK5 on my Instagram)
Damn that’s awesome imma have to check it out for sure! But yeah they are really reliable for sure! As long as you keep up with the maintenance you’re set!
@@RatchetWrenches the sweet part of it was the Golf R engine was low mileage. It had only 66k km, when they swapped it 2 years ago. My old engine had about 178k km when it blew up because it couldn't handle the torque of the Precision turbo 😁. Anyways it's all good now. Car is a beast 😊👍
Intake and a forge atmospheric BOV. The intake increasing the speed the turbine spins in the housing and the BOV will help release that noise which creates that flutter
Ppl hate on automatic but there’s nothing wrong with them. This transmission is way better than the manual one for this generation. Plus It’s my daily I hate driving manual daily’s lol
Hey man, do you know what this could be? When you are at a constant highway speed it tries to engage rolling 2 step the whole time because of the rpm’s. Stage 2 tuned ecu on 2008 mk5 gti
Hey I actually bought one off amazon and this is the updated version amzn.to/2xbp69t. But honestly it changed the car completely. That stock radio was brutal. This gives nav. Bluetooth. Rear view camera and a bunch of other goodies. Highly recommend
Manny in some cases yes. But with the gti manual compared to the dsg. Dsg will always win and it’s more reliable. Working on these for years and must failures are manual trannys. Unfortunately automatic is the future. Ppl are lazy. It’s truly a shame manuals are less produced now a days.
Nice! But personally I can’t give you much on the mk6. I’ve worked on them when they came into the shop. Usually pretty solid, not too many issues. But I prefer the MK5 Imo. My buddy had a mk6 and he loved it. Lowered. Exhaust, full bolts on and he never really had any issues

Also, the turbo was upgraded to K04, and has been running on 1.8 boost for the last 3 years! Maybe the most reliable vw turbo engine !
Couldn’t agree more with you! They’re almost bulletproof hahah! How do you like the k04? I’ve been contemplating upgrading to it lol
I’m going to buy an 07 gti 4d 100k miles tomorrow - after the pre-purchase inspection, I’m excited! Upgrading from a 99 explorer 😅
Nice! Goodluck with it you’ll love it!
Thank you! I’ve had it for two days now and I’m in love!
And my turbo needs to be replaced. 🥲
Just got a 08 gti looking forward for more vids 👍👍👍👍
Make sure to subscribe and check out all the videos I have of it. I’m actually considering selling it tho but imma keep making more videos before I do
My MKV is a 2008 and it has almost 230,000 miles on it and I live in Chicago area!
Well said! Exactly if you maintain it you’re gonna have it last for a while! Damn you have a lot of miles! That’s awesome that it keeps going strong! You’ll like the H&R kit I know someone who has that setup. Thanks for watching please help us out by subscribing for more content!
I have a 2006 mk5 fsi 1.4. This car is a ton of fun
Nice! And yeah they really are a fun time!
Hey can from Mexico I got a mk5 Bora gli same thing but with a trunk up in the states it's a Jetta gli .loved the video
Thanks! Subscribe for some more content on the GTI
Austin bro your a natural keep it up!!!
Thank you! Appreciate that
When it comes to these cars all u gotta say is the dsg handles more power and has transmission tuning and dsg pops when shifting
Lol true short and sweet
I have 2008 MK5 6spd but wish it was an Edition 30 like in the UK. Still you can't beat that Go Kart experience. 😃
The edition 30's are definitely sweet! Yea they are basically larger go karts 😂
Have the same GTI as you and live close by and I couldn't agree with you more!!
They are fun cars for sure
I've mine since new , 16 years now . Only recent engine misfire and a fuel injector was replaced. Other than that same clutch and gearbox and everything else . About 120,000 miles.
That's impressive actually!
Good video. I have a 2007 Fahrenheit GLI with 227,000 miles on it. I bought it with 67k on it. I drive the piss out of it.
Thanks! And man I love the Fahrenheit GLI’s that yellow is beautiful. But yeah Ik a couple people that have over 200k miles. These cars are awesome
Do you still have your fahrenheit? I just got one last week with 87K miles.
I had the same car, only in 4 door. Im upset every day I traded it in. Best car EVER, and that was my 3rd GTI.
Yeah they really are one of a kind! It’s gonna be a sad day when I part ways with it in the near future. Do you still drive a Gti or not anymore?
@@RatchetWrenches Thank you for the congratulation 😊👍 Take care mate
I’m getting this as my project car. found one with relatively low miles for R120k ZAR
Nice, You’ll love it!
I have a mkv gti also, same color here in nj I love it to death.
That’s awesome man where about in jersey?
@@RatchetWrenches I'm in Hudson county, jersey city area..
Keep up the good the great work
Enjoyed this review of "my" car. Thanks
Thanks for watching
What a Beautiful gti 🔥😬
Thanks 🙏
I also have mk5 gti... another must is upgrading the brakes. Compared to the power it’s putting out...brakes are weak
I loved my Dsg and I do miss it but every time i got in the mkv I would totally forget that i had an R. I loved your video and if you find yourself in Oklahoma city with that beautiful Mkv hit me up and we can cruse with the okc vw crew lol!
Corey Eaton yeah they have solid warranties! But yeah regardless if the trans dsg or not I love the mkv generation. Something about it just stands out to me and I’d prefer it over a mk7 or any other new version. But awesome! If I’m ever there I’ll defiantly be hitting you up! We do want to take the gti across country for a video hahah so maybe make a pit stop
Yeah im gunna get an 08 with 99k onit looks great fun car
Awesome! Best of luck! And yes super fun car!
@@RatchetWrenches yeah is 8000 a good price on one with 99,000 onit? An yes looks super fun
Nice video I have the mk5 gti wish they had the.same front bumper in england with the front reflectors on .also having a new colour coded rear bumper put on mine the black rear bumper.does not do the car any justice .. but I am happy with the car . Cheers take care
Oh wow yeah I’ve been wanting to match my rear bumpers to the body color!
I have the 2008 Passat with the FSI and I feel like I'm always putting money in and something always is wrong. I never have had a check engine tho hahaha
now i want one. been having a tough decision between the Audi A3 and a GTI
Michael Batibo I’m in the same boat. I can’t decide if I want a golf R or Audi S3 lol
@@RatchetWrenches hi bro i have a mk5 gti stage 2 and im thinking about going for a s3 soon. Would you say the s3 is just as reliable as a gti?
lib gapper I think so yeah. As long as the maintenance is kept up on it you’ll be fine. Any vw just requires maintenance that’s all!
Thanks bro❤..im getting one already!
Such a underrated car!
Couldn’t agree more, it was such a fun car honestly
I doubt it’s much but fresh air is always better
thanks for your input i've been looking into these cars
Love the mk5s my boy
Thanks! It was a sick car for sure
Another great review BTW! 👍 Car looks great too!
Thanks man!
I had to replace the turbo on my mk5, no regrets.
Damn that’s unfortunate, did you upgrade to a bigger one while you were there or no?
@@RatchetWrenches It lasted longer than it should've, I replaced it with a refurb for only
$1300.00. It's was already tuned and modded which wore the turbo out quickly,
it's crazy fast now.
Instant sub. Fantastic video!
Appreciate that so much!
210k still on my stock clutch and flywheel. i want to be buried in my mk5. i must have lucked out. never left me stranded. even exploded the hpfp cam follower and she still drove just just didnt like me pushing the go pedal very much.
That’s what I like to hear! And yeah that’s the most common failure unfortunately but aslong as it’s fixed that thing should run you for a while
@@RatchetWrenches sadly enough I decided to take her out for a quick drive to the local hardware store.
Cool video and love this car, also have one just one fault is the sills rot , mine are bubbling and wanting to sort before they go through,
Thanks! And yeah that’s actually extremely common unfortunately:/ treat it before it gets too late 😬
Any way of getting wax oil in to the sill box section
Another awesome GTI video.
Appreciate that!
Why did the US not get the proper GTi seats we got in the UK?
Couldn’t tell ya honestly, I’m sure the market is just different in terms of what each country gets
Love the mk5 videos
Thank you!
4:33 til 6min or so. Love you!
@@RatchetWrenches I'm in bklyn. NY. Thanks for responding.
Sick car!
my dads reason: the damn thing made it to 230k and we both think its gonna make it to 300k
As long as it’s maintained properly it can def make it to 300k
Nice review , cheers
Appreciate that!
I love this video!
I agree with everything you're stating about the gti
Thank you 🙏
Hi there, nice video.
Here's a video I made when I first saw the problem: ruclips.net/video/p9NvCTYBqIs/видео.html
and this is a more recent video (where I learned to focus the camera first, then worry about the light)
ruclips.net/video/n1q7HW_TgXM/видео.html and here are some photos: imgur.com/gallery/EFVzWdq and here some to form an idea where it's located: imgur.com/a/sucM7UB
Cheers. edit: timing belt was last changed on September 2016 if this info makes any difference.
@@RatchetWrenches,
You're right.
Nice vid, I drive a 2008r32
Thanks and damn I’m jealous I love R32’s
I bought a cpo mk7 and 3 weeks into owning it, the shifter module for the dsg went bad so idk if that was and luck or what but it made me question the reliability of my purchase
Hmm that’s interesting how many miles? It could honestly be just bad luck they tend to rarely fail like that. But since it’s a CPO do you get it replaced under warranty?
Do you know what headunit that is? Only thing I don’t like about the interior is the dated radio. Been looking at an aftermarket one
kanye best dressed west amzn.to/31LKNHu this is actually the same one I have, yeah those stock headunits don’t do justice
FSI reliable!!!!! Balance shafts are not maintenance.. and if they have to fail atleast don't destroy the engine immediately...
It's rare that they fail. And when they do, most often lack of maintenance is the reason
Nice video, new subscriber too.
Thank you! And awesome that helps us out more than you know!🤙🏼🙏
You said you were a Volkswagen mechanic in the video and I was wondering if it possible for the stock screen to display a digital speed read out just like the newer models?
Hi bro, what kinda stereo is that? Looks good and I'm looking to upgrade mine.
Hey man. I actually have one like this. This is the updated one compared to mine. amzn.to/2T4dX1n . It’s a plug n play and I highly recommend it!
I got a mk4 gti, the ecs mk5 gti makes me want to get a mk5 gti haha.
right that mkv is so beautiful! But hahah I want a mk4 so badly
I meant plenty of power , goddamn autocorrect !
Hahaha I figured that’s what you meant
my only issue with buying a used gti is a lot of them have been thrashed because typically the people who buy them are wankers
Hahaha facts 😂 gotta find the right one
How do I use “paddles” when I click mine they don’t do anything they just are there
What car do you have? A Gti or a base golf? They should operate once you click them, so either they’re not real paddles (installed on a golf) or you have an electrical issue that’s not telling the trans to shift when the click of the paddles is applied
I’m here for the albino deer
🤣 that was the highlight of the video
You do have a tfsi your engine will say turbo fsi
should I get this or a 630i, I know that they are completely different but would like to get some opinions :D
Personally I chose a GTI over the 630i. Never was a bmw fan tbh, a lot more problems and headaches. But ultimately it depends on what you want!
Thanks
A much nicer interior than similar aged BMW's.
True, I love how vw paid homage to the older style vw with the plaid print interior
What touch screen gps did you put in. I have this car and looking to upgrade.
They don’t make the one I had anymore but this is a similar one amzn.to/3fdXGCS
Car is a beast 😊👍
how did you get the turbo stutter without the aftermarket turbo???
Intake and a forge atmospheric BOV. The intake increasing the speed the turbine spins in the housing and the BOV will help release that noise which creates that flutter
Why is his seats not bucket
And a different headrest
Bottom line, the MKV GTI is a very fun car to drive, and is very hard to drive it slowly. It looks like she's begging you to put your foot down :)
Couldn’t agree more
nice video... until i seen him out the boot down and it was a automatic....
Ppl hate on automatic but there’s nothing wrong with them. This transmission is way better than the manual one for this generation. Plus It’s my daily I hate driving manual daily’s lol
.....But that albino deer!!
Lol that thing was actually crazy
Hey man, do you know what this could be? When you are at a constant highway speed it tries to engage rolling 2 step the whole time because of the rpm’s.
Stage 2 tuned ecu on 2008 mk5 gti
What radio do you have? And is it a plug and play or did you need a gateway
Hey this is the updated version of mine. amzn.to/2T4dX1n and it’s plug n play with the factory harness
what radio is that?? looking for new radio i have same car just a 4 door and im doing the same mods you have i already have mine lowered
Hey I actually bought one off amazon and this is the updated version amzn.to/2xbp69t. But honestly it changed the car completely. That stock radio was brutal. This gives nav. Bluetooth. Rear view camera and a bunch of other goodies. Highly recommend
What wheels are those? look nice
Hey they’re F1R F21

Hahah it happens! I’ve watched a video that I enjoy like 20 times so I get it hahah
What years of the gti Had the FSI engine?
Mkv generation up until 2008.5
My DSG is shifting like a normal automatic sometimes, do you know what that can be?
manual > paddles
you're fooling yourself if you think otherwise
Manny in some cases yes. But with the gti manual compared to the dsg. Dsg will always win and it’s more reliable. Working on these for years and must failures are manual trannys. Unfortunately automatic is the future. Ppl are lazy. It’s truly a shame manuals are less produced now a days.
I'm getting a GTI soon , would you recommend a Mk5 or a Mk6? Can anyone give their experience on the Mk6?
@@RatchetWrenches Alright, I think I have my choice now. Thanks for the advice 👍! Really appreciated
My pleasure! There’s so many forums and Reddit pages too that you can find some key info to help you decide
@@jayzxiang I don't know if you got your MK5 yet.
