Think of Bernie as a poet. He writes poems and sends them to Elton. Then Elton puts the music to it. That’s their special sauce.

Bernie wrote these lyrics in 30 minutes, while sitting at the breakfast table. He handed them to Elton, on his way up stairs. Elton went straight to his piano and composed the music in one quick take.

It's amazing how you think that music doesn't need to be written. It's just out there somewhere and you start singing right after the lyrics is ready, and the rest is "production".
Bernie writes the lyrics, then hands it to Elton who writes the music sitting at the piano. That's how their magic works. You can't say that either music or lyrics is more important. It all comes together. When I discovered Elton John I didn't speak English, like, at all. So I didn't understand what he was singing about. And still I loved his songs.

  • @bellac1451

It's such a beautiful, unselfish lyric - how wonderful life is while you're in the World. He's not saying my life is better because you're with me. He's saying my life is wonderful just knowing that you're somewhere out there in this World. 😭

Bernie wrote the words (lyrics). Elton wrote the music. This is how they worked together to write their songs. This was Elton's first hit song. The song where most of us first heard of Elton.
Btw, there are other famous songwriting teams like this. Hal David wrote the lyrics to most of the music of Burt Bacharach.

This is the song that got the superstardom of Elton started. It took over the radio airwaves and became a huge hit. It is my sentimentally favorite song. It reminds me of my long departed wife .if you do not know Bernie Taupin wrote all of Elton’s lyrics in the early days and for most of his songs still to this day. Bernie would write the lyrics and send it to Elton where he would sit down, imagine what the lyrics meant to him and put the music to it often in less than 30 minutes! You should react to the original studio recording because it is special!

  • @Scooterboi60

I found out a few years later, after getting familiar with Elton's music in 1970, that I'd actually first heard him in 1969 (when I was 9). I'd been enthralled with the sounds and lyrics of a song that was playing on the radio then but I never paid attention to who it was sung by. It was not until a few years later, when a compilation album, "...To be Continued" was released that I heard it again and it was "Lady Samantha" which took me right back to 1969.
It was the first song that was my own, not influenced by anything that my siblings or parents were listening to. For that reason, it's among the best songs ever of Bernie and Elton for me.
Just to help you, Bernie wrote the lyrics then handed, posted, faxed or emails (depending on the era)to Elton who then sits at the piano and composes the music.
If he can't get a song within an hour he'll discard it and move on to the next one. "Your Song" took him within 15 minutes to write.
The producer was the late Gus Dudgeon. Production is way different now compared to back then.
Gus Dudgeon was to Elton what George Martin was to the Beatles.

Bernie writes the words...sends them to Elton, who THEN writes the music by how he feels the words take him forward. Bernie is NOT a musician but a poet and lyricist...meaning WORDS ONLY. Elton gets the words in front of him reads them and immediately feels a vibe about the mode and type of music he will compose for those specific words...tempo, everything. Then he hashes out the music...and has said, it usually takes him fifteen to twenty minutes to write the core skelton of any song. He said if the song isn't coming in the first 15 minutes or so, he gives up on it because longer than that feels forced and is like pulling teeth where it just doesn't come naturally. Their songwriting partnership is an odd one but has always worked.

An amazing masterpiece from Elton and Bernie, Elton's beautiful piano fits Bernie's lyrics perfectly. Lyrics are the words to the song. The composer writes the musical notes. Some people do both in which case they are referred to as the songwriter. I've loved this song since it first came out and put Elton on the map.

Top of the Pops (TOTP) is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. The programme was the world's longest-running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each show consisted of performances of some of the week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Top 30 was used from 1969, and the Top 40 from 1984.

Hi, many songwriters work as a team. Usually one (Elton) writes the music and the other (Bernie) write the lyrics. Often the lyricist gets lost in the shuffle but most remain the team. Sometimes one has a complete song/lyric and the other finishes it. Sometimes they write together.
I want to hit on Rod Stewart whom you mentioned. Here’s a crossing of the streams. You earlier reviewed Superstar by Carpenters. That song peaked in the US at #2 on Billboard Hot 100. So how this matters. The song that was sitting at #1 and blocking it was Maggie Mae by Rod Stewart. So now you have your first song for Rod as you open a new rabbit hole for him. And a story with it.
Great job, keep going I’m loving your exploration of music of my time.
For Elton, try Crocodile Rock, Bennie and the Jets, PhiladelphiaFreedom for some upbeat rockin’ songs.
    Joe

If you read the lyrics, it sounds to me he is talking to a fan. He can't recall her eye color, and he says you can tell everybody this is your song. To me that's like when you hear a song you love on somewhere (store/radio/club) and tell your friends "that's my song!" as in you love it... If you read through the song you can tell it is impersonal and not really as romantic as it first sounds 😊

This was his first big hit in 1970. This is not necessarily to a specific person; it's just a love song. Bernie wrote it. The MUSIC was written by Elton - the words were written by Bernie - the lyrics are the words. You should really know this before you start listening to songs. The other version never went anywhere - Elton's went crazy. It was his second album but the first one, Skyline Pigeon, was only released in England. Elton wrote the music - it has nothing to do with production.

The Greek word "lyricist" in the English language is incorrectly used to refer to the writer of a poem(poetry). A poem is incorrectly called a song in English because the song is a melody and a poem. This is where this misunderstanding comes from. A person who writes the words of a poem is a poet and not a songwriter. Bernie is a poet. A person who writes melody and music is a composer/melody writer. Elton is a composer/melody writer. A songwriter is a person who writes both together - words and a melody. A producer is a person who organizes the sale of a song. He knows what style is sold, where to find the band members, and things like that. Quincy Jones was a producer, but he was also a composer as well. This does not mean that all producers are composers.
