Join me this Friday 2/16 at 7pm EST for a live steam here on my RUclips channel. I want to see everybody there! 😬
The only cover of a Beatles song that I ever thought was better than the original.
Hmm! Not the only one! Check out Help by John Farnham with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and see what you think! TRULY stunning!
I'd nominate Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help from My Friends". And Joe's "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" while we are at it.
@@debjorgoYes!
Great comment and I'll add that in my opinion he also did "Pinball Wizard" better than The Who!
@@RickeyWilkersonVoices No. Close but, no.
What can you say, it's Elton John no words needed!! Pure joy to the ears😎🥰❤️👍
Love this cover - if you are ever going to want a cover of your own song done, you’d want Sir Elton to perform it!
The fact that Elton still has his best band mates on this awesome remake is well...AWESOME! ✌
When this song came out, i was in 5th grade and totally thought this was Elton's song It's amazing he also did a cover of the who's pinball wizard which is again better than the original imo
You should listen to the original as well
He did.
Both Lucy in the Sky and Philidelphia Freedom stayed at #1 for 2 weeks in a row. Philidelphia Freedom is listed as the #3 top hit of 1975 and Lucy was #35. I listened to a LOT of Elton John that year!
Someone Saved my Life Tonight peaked at #4 that year probably due to it's length. It was the last single to feature his original band until 8 years later. And those were sad years 🙂
Check out Elton's version of Pinball Wizard, if you haven't already. Fantastic energy.
He actually listed to the Who original and then EJ version both about 3 months ago.
The little reggae interlude was John Lennon’s idea.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR LOVE FOR ELTON JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You get an upvote from me any time you react to Elton John. :)
During this time, Elton and John Lennon were becoming good friends. Lennon performed on this song, and Elton performed on Lennon's hit album "Walls and Bridges". Elton visited Lennon at his home along New York's Central Park called "The Dakota"
Driving down the road together, Lennon noticed that almost every radio station was playing Elton's songs. Lennon said, "If your new single goes to Number One, I'm going to throw my radio out the window!". Elton made a bet with Lennon that if his current single, "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" topped the charts, that Lennon would have to go on stage with Elton during Elton's Madison Square Garden concert and sing the song with him. The song did go to Number One, and Lennon joined Elton onstage to sing the song, along with "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and the early Beatles hit "I Saw Her Standing There". Lennon claimed that he was "Scared to Death" to perform, not having performed live in several years. The three Live tracks were released as an Extended Play Record, of which I have a copy. It would be Lennon's last Live performance, as he was killed five years later.
Hard to outdo The Beatles at their own game--but Elton pulls it off. ♦🔶🔷💠
Love this and Got to Get You Into My Life from Earth, Wind and 🔥!
This and Philadelphia Freedom I think are two of his best songs (at least, personally) and not commonly reacted to. It's still funny that Elton hit a brick wall in his career in England and then was persuaded to move to America and then became one of the biggest selling artists of all-time. He did well.
In the 5th grade at Riviera Elementary school in Torrance California, we would mill about on campus before the first bell to line up for first class. The bell would ring and then Philadelphia Freedom was played over the PA every day until we were all in line for class.
I prefer this version over the original - which doesn't usually happen. My favorite Elton John album - hope you're enjoying! :)
Ok if your going to do Lucy in the Sky you really need to follow up with "Judy In Disguise (With Glasses) - John Fred & His Playboy Band". It is a really fun satire take on the original Beatles version and it really charted well with lots of #1's world wide.
Great reactions. You would enjoy Crocodile Rock, Tiny Dancer, Philadelphia freedom and Your song. ❤❤❤
PLEASE react to EMPTY GARDEN Elton's song he wrote for John Lennon after his death - AHmazing Song
A great a cover. Excellent instrumentation and change of pace from the original. Love the drums.
If you want to hear something special, on the reissue of the live album Here And There 1976 there is a brilliant performance by EJ and John Lennon with 3 tracks Whatever Gets You Thru The Night (also US no.1), Lucy... and I Saw You Standing There from the MSG concert in 1974. I don't know what the legal status is with the live videos, is audio okay?
Have fun with good music.
I think the music for the Elton version matches the lyrics in sounding like a dream.
FYI if you don’t know this but John Lennon‘s son came home with a picture from school that he told his father was Lucy In The Sky….useless trivia! Still loving all your reactions. You actually listen & react from the soul. Keep them coming!
Was in high school when this came out....and after hearing it as a kid from the Beatles this was fun to listen to eltons cover....
First.
Love this song! Among others of his. 🙂👍💯
Great cover. What I really like is that he doesn't try to imitate The Beatles, there are way too many wanna-be bands around who just try to sound exactly like the original and it's just like taking a photo of a masterpiece and passing it off as your own work. Good job Elton.
One of the rare occasions where I like the cover better than the original. Lennon said the same thing. I feel the same about Elton's cover of "Pinball Wizard." Talk about tackling some greats!
Agreed. Elton does a great cover.
The reggae part being John's idea helps!
Winston is John Lennon's middle name. I did not know he contributed here, thanks!
John and EJ were good friends, and played on each others' songs. John and EJ played live in MSG a few years before John was killed.
I remember driving around with my friends in northern Minnesota at night in the winter, getting high and blasting the radio when this came on. It sounded so good then and still does today.
A Number One Song From the Seventies That Gets Almost No Airplay. Ever.
Elton has a really great cover of the Beatles song Get Back. And many more, which he was doing only in his live concerts in the 70s and 80s
When the Beatles first released this song, I had a grade school teacher who thought it was disgusting that were talking about a girl with colitis going by. LOL. Of course everyone else thought it was about L.S.D. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Although I wouldn’t doubt that it is about experimental drug use? It sounds trippy enough.
The song title came about due to Julian Lennon's drawing of a friend of his in school.
In my formative years I was greatly influenced by my older brother's music choices, which including a lot of Elton John. And all of the amazingly talented bands, solo artists of the '60s and 70's.
Maaaan you should have shared Philadelphia Freedom!
This is the only full cover of a song the Beatles recorded themselves that went to #1. The only other song written by McCartney but credited to the two of them that went to #1 was never recorded by the Beatles because it was deemed not good enough. Instead, it was given to Peter and Gordon, called "World Without Love." Stars on 45 hit #1 with a medley which included bits of 8 songs by the Beatles, so that doesn't count.
Fun fact; the reggae was John Lennon's idea.
Wow!!! I can't believe how long it's been since I've heard EJ's version! Literally decades! I forgot how unique it is.
Though I prefer the original, this version is epic!!
Elton did a great job on this one. Its not easy to cover a Beatles song and make it your own. He did it again with John Lennon's "One Day At A Time".
Nice reaction Man.
If ya wanna react to Elton Johns greatest song ever, please
react to "Someone saved my life tonight."
Please do the one with lyrics.
It's his best son ever, imho.
Keep up the nice work
Great job, Salvo!
Love that song. Although, I'm partial to 'Levon'.
Well, that's a great one as well I agree!@@jodij6280
My fave from EJ is "All The Girls Love Alice" from GYBR. You're doing great reactions brother. You do your homework first. Keep it up. You also find out song names and how to pronounce them. I have dropped some reactors because of their lackluster approach.
Another great Elton John song and reaction my friend. You should consider reacting to "Ticking" from his 1974 Caribou album and "Salvation" from his 1972 Honky Chateau album!
The label on the 45 RPM single says, "Featuring the Reggae Guitars of Doctor Winston O' Boogie".
John and George both liked to use odd names for credits on others' songs. :D
The song title is rumoured to be a reference to the drug LSD I.E.Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Beatles version best.
Elton rocks it. Literally.
🍄😎🍄
Not about that at all. Julian Lennon made a drawing of his school friend, and that's where it came from.
Yeah riiiiight of course. @@lauraallen55
I don't know what your damage is, but that's factual information straight from the horse's mouth.@@robertchinnery9806
You should listen to Richard Thompson 's Beeswing or Vincent black lightning 1952. Or ram Linn by stealeye span
I like EJ’s version though nothing could ever match the Beatles original!
No, this song isn't about getting stoned on LSD - - no, not at all! ;)
It's actually not at all. It's about a drawing Julian Lennon made as a child of his friend, named, well, guess what her names was lol
This may be blasphemy to some, but I like this cover better than the original Beatles version. 😬
One of the Beatles contributing with the reggae idea didn't hurt!
Elton is a legend, but the original Beatles version is still better.
Nice cover but no where near as good as the original by The Beatles. ✌️🖖
