Richard is a great composer/arranger and had an EXCELLENT ear for a hit when he was listening to other people's compositions. And Karen had THE VOICE that could make anyone happy or sad with seemingly no effort. MAGIC. Thanks for sharing your reaction with us.
Salvo. Do the Carpenter deep dive. Their entire catalog of music is absolutely fabulous! Richard was a genius in finding, arranging, and orchestrating songs which particularly fit Karen’s perfect pitch voice and their unique harmonious style.
Warms my heart/soul to see a young guy like you enjoy the Carpenters. Gotta listen to “Solitaire” - many think it’s her best vocal ever, but she didn’t like it. Would love to see your reaction. It’s mind-blowing.
Most of those songs are together on the album ‘The Singles 1969 - 197’ . On that album only, I love the way that the three songs, ‘Superstar’, ‘Rainy Days & a Mondays’ and ‘Goodbye Days to Love’ all harmoniously flow into each other musically without pause. Perfection!
I absolutely love her. I was driving on the Massachusetts Turnpike when they announced on the radio she had died. Was a very sad day... There is no one like her. So great you did this reaction. I agree....Superstar touches the soul. Thanks, Sal. To your comment about stage positioning, he likely did that to give Karen the full focus and spotlight.
Made me tear up 😢 Karen was a HUGE influence in my life. I’m glad you love and appreciate her as much as I do. She looks and sounds like an angel. 👼 RIP Karen.
Thanks for expressing your love for The Carpenters! There will never be another voice like hers. I would have given anything to have met her. She will always be my favorite female vocalist of ALL time. Thanks for keeping their music alive!
I was 22 years old when Karen died. For decades I wasn't able to listen to the Carpenters without crying. A great voice gone way too soon, Such a sad life she lead. It's only been in the past year that I've been able to listen to her again and revel at her remarkable voice. Astonishing!
She was so hurtfully sad...when I divorced my husband any time a "a beautiful song that we both listened to joyously" came across the radio waves during our separation and divorce, he found it too hard to listen to it as he was going through suffering for my by not being there to share the listening time to him especially those disco songs we danced to. @@michaelasay8587
My older sister used to play 'Top of the World' on repeat on her record player back when I was very young in the 70's. It's kinda ingrained in my DNA now - but I'm OK with that. 😂
Some of the fantastic Carpenters song you need to listen to: Hurting Each Other, For All We Know, Top of the World, Masquerade, Bless the Beasts and the Children.
I sang 🎶 Bless the beasts and the children...light their way when the darkness surrounds them~ give the love~ let it shine all around them 🎶 yes, this I sang continually as I 'battened down the hatches' before entering the protective washroom as some very peculiarly dark clouds covered the whole sky...possibly a tornado could touch down~~I kept singing this not only to protect me but ALL those INNOCENT CREATIONS seeking protection amidst a storm surge. Very grateful to testify after 15 minutes decided to come out and investigate. Those menacing storm clouds dissipated for now I saw only normal clouds and blue sky!!! Oh, so grateful ❤ to God and The Carpenters' penetrating, healing song❤!
Shout out to the lyrics When there’s no getting over that rainbow When the smallest of dreams won’t come true I can take all the madness the world has to give me But I won’t last a day without you
Karen had the most beautiful recording voice imo. She never had to scream or yell like so many others. When she hits certain notes in her lower vibrato I still get goosebumps. Richard’s arrangements were magnificent as well.
My mum always described her voice as being like warm bath water. Really comforting. I thought it was rather moving that so many really hard-headed, ruthless record executives bawled their eyes out at her funeral.
I feel the same about their music. Karen had an angelic sound to her voice. She's very genuine on stage. Always always love singing her songs. I'll never forget how sad I was the day I learned she earned her angel wings. Such a huge loss, RIH Karen Carpenter. Awesome reactions Salvo. Thnx
As an onlooker I like to see Richard tinkling the keys be it the grand piano or the organ...and Karen's change of position to enter into a new blessed song. BLESS THEM BOTH and their band and also a complete orchestra performing with this dear sister and brother.❤😊
Was privileged to see this medley at their Toronto concert in 1976. It’s a great showcase of their career. So many excellent songs! Thanks for pursuing their music sir!
I absolutely love this, you are right, it is just a treat to the ears, the senses. Karen had not only the voice, also the stage presence and truly knew how to deliver a song. Every time I listen to her sing I end up teary eyed.
Oh my. Listening to this with you Salvo brings me back to the emotions I felt when I first heard the Carpenters. I can see the love for this band in your eyes.
"Top of the World" was on the "A Song for You" album. It's a song where they experimented with a country vibe. It was a huge hit but has become less well-known than many of their other songs over the years.
You just heard a snippet of top of the world. That's a really cool song you should check that one out too. I don't think you're going to find anything but awesome songs from the carpenters.
It took a whille but its worth the wait so many ibg hits here close to you Rainy days and mondays and goodbye to love some of my favoriiiites Bye the way the drummer Cubby started his career at 5 on the ooriginel Micckey Mouse Clunb as a Mousekteer his special talent of course playing the drums
You really need to react to the medley from their 1980 TV special “Music, Music, Music”…it’s really spectacular. That same TV special has another medley with Karen and the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, that’s equally amazing. 🙂
Karen has such a wonderful, beautiful, and stunning voice.I almost tune out the orchestra and am in heaven listening to her voice. Thank you for your reaction.
Perfect pitch, three octave contralto... Karen's voice was heaven sent and the world became a darker place without it. Shame on the person who called her Richard's "chubby sister" back when no one really knew who they were.... and anyone else who helped chip at her self image and esteem.
Words matter. Look at the times we are in because of hateful, insensitive words. She took words and made them magical with her voice and they tore her down in spite of the beauty she shared.
Top of the world was on the A song for you album and the Singles 1969-1973 that was the remix that was released as a single that went to #1 December 1973
in 1976 the Carpenters did a concert in Lansing MI which was my home town. I regret not going, I didn't know about it until they were sold out, I was busy in college, at MSU, practicing the trumpet for hours in music school. The idea that I could have even been in the same room with the Carpenters haunts to this day. Who didn't want to be Close to You, Karen? You were liked the talented girl next door to many of us, young and old, and your brother the telneted guy next door. there w as time the Carpenters dominated the charts for about 6 years, the first half of the 1970's. They so gracious to their fans
Karen's voice is so beautiful and so natural without any warbling or histrionics. Since you enjoyed this medley I think you would love one of the many Bee Gees medleys eg Australia 1989 or The Midnight Special 1975.
You should listen to Bless the Beasts and the Children. So beautiful and poignant. It’s from a movie, which was atrocious, but the song is great. “Bless the beasts and the children, For in this world they have no voice, They have no choice. Bless the beasts and the children, For the world can never be, The world they see. Light their way when the darkness surrounds them…”
Top Of The World is on The Singles 1969-73 album. Richard reworked it from an earlier version on A Song For You album, giving it a little more punch. One of their three #1 hits.
I loved Karen Carpenter so very much. Her voice was so beautiful her and her brothers harmonies were Pitch Perfect. I was so pissed when they took her out from behind the drums while she sang. Her drums was her safety zone and putting her out front and telling her that she would be on TV And TV makes you 20 pounds heavier and she had to lose weight when she never did have to lose weight. The music industry killed her. They gave her anorexia. She was so shy and such a great drummer. They took away one of her passions and yes, a security blanket, but she was so young, and then to tell her, she was fat and never was fat. Even in this video when she turns to the side, you can see how sharp her hip bones are even with all the layers to the dress, and the puffy sleeves could not disguise to us who saw in real life how skinny she was. The production company made sure she was always layered and clothes, but every once in a while, we get a sneak peek of her and just a long sleeve shirt and pants and how Skinny she was and how gaunt her face looked. They all knew she had anorexia. She never died. She should never have gotten that disease and it still pisses me off to this day.
❤Such a great live performer. Ticket To Ride is a Beatles song....that might be where you heard it before. Richard is so talented too. I love therir cover of Please Mr. Postman.
You can physically see she was not well but still with those difficulties her voice did not falter . It's truly amazing she performed under her situation . Most would run and hide but not Karen . Maybe it was strong adherence to obligation and not wanting to let her fans down
Two amazing songs by them are Two Sides and Sometimes. They are seldom played and I just don't understand why. Sometimes was written by Henry Mancini, too! Check them out.
I enjoyed that. I hadn't seen this performance although I had heard all of the songs when I was young. It always makes me a little sad to hear Karen knowing what happened to her. She was great.
Hi Salvo! You have a mission to now react to all the long form songs you just sampled, that are new to you. This is a great show in the full format, too. He was also an original Mouseketeer, “Cubby!” Richard is 77 and I saw him at the 55th Anniversary in April. Someone else I saw and met at the 55th was one of the performers doing tribute to Carpenters. She has numerous Carpenters covers out, most in short form. I’ll link a full length song for your information. If you love Carpenters , as do I, I lived them the first time around. You owe it to yourself to learn about Tori. I’m a big rock fan and the woman of my dreams will always be Stevie Nicks I think somewhat like yourself. But I tell you next to Streisand this is the purist voice god ever created without question. She was such a loss to music and the world ❤️❤️
The crazy thing is that both of them were desperately ill; her with not eating and taking copious amounts of laxatives and him totally addicted to quailuds; yet they can still pull a performance like that out of the bag. Pure pure genius both of them ❤
It's so difficult to watch her performing. Listening to her perform is delightful, the visual knowing what happened is heart breaking. I grew up listening to The Carpenters, they were playing throughout my childhood.
Superstar is one of my favorites, for sure, but even more than that, I like Solitaire and Masquerade, if you’re looking for something a little different. ❤ Really if you wanted to, you could break out all the songs that were in that medley, and react to each one in full and you couldn’t go wrong, they were all great songs.

You should listen to " ruclips.net/video/QdBKAnAhzXo/видео.html&ab_channel=CarpentersVEVO ". It is a cover of the Beatles "Ticket to Ride" which was released the same time as the version of "Superstar" you reacted to. In 2018 Richard did the arrangements for 18 of their songs grabbed their masters and went to the Abbey Road Studio in London and a new Carpenters album was born. The album features Carpenters' "original vocal and instrumental tracks" accompanied by new orchestral arrangements by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Richard Carpenter served as the album's producer, arranger and conductor. I believe it will be added to your favorite list. Not surprising as anything that came out of Karen's mouth becomes my favorite and when she was 15 to 18 I used to see her in clubs around Los Angeles as the drummer for the Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio. She was my favorite drummer then.
Dionne Warwick said Karen Carpenter was the only singer she ever knew with perfect pitch! Karen singing live sounded just like her records. Her brother insisted they sound the same live as their recordings. to not disappoint their fans.
This was Karen at the top of her game. Energetic, vibrant and uber talented. I have seen a lot of statements about comments that may have triggered her illness, and in an age of incendiary internet trolls, it is best to try to maintain civility. However, we have learned in the 40 years since she passed, that anorexia and bulimia are very very complicated psychological disorders, that it takes a lot of commitment to starve yourself to death, and it is still happening today.
Best female vocalist of all time, my humble opinion but really, c'mon. Pitch perfect, smooth as soft butter, up and down. Gorgeous.
One of the greatest female singers, and Richard with those arrangements, Yazz-
With older microphones and recording tech and she still sounds this amazing singing live.
The voice of an Angel.
They had so many hits that they could do a full medley, stop, and then do another.
His arrangements and her voice were a monster combo.
She was so special. It's sad she didn't know how loved she was. Damn the Aholes that made comments about her shape to hell.
Richard is a great composer/arranger and had an EXCELLENT ear for a hit when he was listening to other people's compositions. And Karen had THE VOICE that could make anyone happy or sad with seemingly no effort. MAGIC. Thanks for sharing your reaction with us.
I still find it astonishing what a talented drummer she was, too.
Karen just really had no peer. An iconic sound that just doesn't get replicated. Anthems of my youth for sure. 🔥🏆🎶
Karen Carpenter is also a world-class drummer, she is absolutely dynamic on the drums.
Karen Carpenter, what a unique voice. Nobody like her.
Stunning...simply one of the greatest vocalists of all time

Totally agree! It's my favorite of theirs. It sucks that there's no video (as far as I know) of them performing it.
FLAWLESS ❤️

Thank you. Amazing as usual!
Mental note - I should never watch something like this 15 minutes before being due in a work meeting....struggle street with the tears. 😔 Beautiful.
Karen epitomizes what a lady all of us guys admire. Where has this endearing quality gone in the music industry?
You should listen to Bless the Beasts and the Children. So beautiful and poignant. It’s from a movie, which was atrocious, but the song is great.
“Bless the beasts and the children,

I enjoyed that. I hadn't seen this performance although I had heard all of the songs when I was young.
It always makes me a little sad to hear Karen knowing what happened to her. She was great.

BS! pure BS. So your church choir have several singers that sound like Karen Carpenter? Again BS.

Do a reaction to the Karen Carpenter singing "Now", her last recording.
Her live performances were even better than her recorded ones. Her pitch was perfect!
Medley with Ella Fitzgerald is a must watch.
Richard probably faced the band as the conductor, because this arrangement was sophisticated.
...because Richard was also directing the orchestra (why he wasn't facing audience)
Such short short versions. If i was at one of their concerts i would eant to hear all of the songs.

However, we have learned in the 40 years since she passed, that anorexia and bulimia are very very complicated psychological disorders, that it takes a lot of commitment to starve yourself to death, and it is still happening today.
😭
Karen’s passing is such a sad story 😢
It was a gift to all of us, to hear her angelic sound…but her depression caused her anorexia, so so sad, her pain.
