Love & Mercy angry burger scene (John Cusack, Paul Giamatti, 2014)

- The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson is sternly treated by Dr Eugene Landy for eating a hamburger at a barbecue, in front of new flame Melinda (Elizabeth Banks). It later transpired Landy had misdiagnosed Brian with paranoid schizophrenia and kept him in a state of dependency for over 10 years, also forbidding his relationship with car saleswoman Melinda who eventually brought him down. Acclaimed biopic also stars Paul Dano as young Wilson, directed by Bill Pohlad.

"angry burger scene" I love that title for some reason
So do i?
Immediately reminds me of the Angry Whopper from Burger King which was amazing
it broke my heart to see how bad Brian Wilson was treated. no one should be treated the way he was.
usually movies exaggerate the real deal but Brian said it was even worse ... whoa
No kidding. There's a section in his memoir "I Am Brian Wilson" where he mentions where they got into an altercation with each other. Became so heated that Brian went up and punched Doctor Landy in the face. I mean, you have to be a real, special brand of cruel in order to merit getting slugged in the face by the person you're being cruel too.
Brian Wilson was an entitled celebrity. He deserved this and much much more. You have to make animals like Wilson behave and stay in their place.
@@dannygherzgiher8430 nice try, troll.
@@Ruskefaen can confirm that was in fact a troll
The real Brian Wilson had to walk out of a screening because Giamatti reminded him so much of the real Vandy.
Damb
lol vandy
@@runnersdialzero1244 You know what, leave it as Vandy. I haven’t heard of Brian Wilson much and I don’t even wanna be reminded right here.
Probably not. In the most recent interview he said he was a very funk up man, but he tries to oversaw that and be grateful for what he teach him.
@@LosviajesdeJimbo Brian’s pretty known to give answers that vary so I lean more to doubt
Giamatti, as always, flawless. Choosing him for this role was the only way to go.
He will always be pig vomit to me.
@@margaritoamargo6347 he is a great actor
@@margaritoamargo6347 This is pretty much the same performance with a wig.
@@margaritoamargo6347 From the Howard Stern movie you mean. Good one!
@@tramainecampbell2688 Yes he is. What margarito meant was that he was called "pig vomit" in the movie about Howard Stern, that's all.
Paul Giamatti is a great actor. I'm not surprised the real Brian Wilson had a hard time watching him on screen as Eugene Landy.
John Cusack does a great impression of Paul Dano
looooooooooooool
Brian said that the way Dr Landy was portrayed was exaggerated but wasn't far off. Paul Giamatti is very good at playing the baddie.
Well, Giamatti played him so good that Brian himself had to walk out of the theatre during a screening of the movie.
@@fc43 Giamatti is very good at playing bad guys.
He said that he thought the actual Landy was even worse
Some have said Landy was actually even worse. Brian mentioned how Landy forced him to eat spaghetti off the floor once.
Exaggerations make for better movies. If you want reality make a documentary
this scene still makes me sob it's fucking insane how accurate this sort of abuse is. god
So sad, Brian in the 60s was a cool and smart guy and he ended up being harassed by a crazy doctor...
And unfortunately saved his life
@@Syfoll And then went too far by dominating him.
@@1987AnimeBoy True, he did go way too far, but he also did save his life
He saved his life but ruined his mind with the heavy psychotropic drugs and sedatives he kept him on. Even when Brian was at his worst, he still was articulate and well spoken. But after the landy years, he just seemed completely lobotomized
@@doctorfeinstone6524 At least he's on the correct medication now. There is a few interviews from the 80's where Brian wasn't as drugged up and spoke pretty clearly. Now he has his good days and bad days.
It’s insane how good of an actor Paul Giamati is. He’s usually such a likable guy but he manages to be such a horrible human being in this movie. Fantastic performance
he's a horrible guy but with a lot of optical signifiers in his speech and mannerisms before he scolds brian of someone who seems to be behaving in an authentically well meaning way to the point where you would probably put your trust in him. like this guy is either the most deceptively convincing charlatan who's ever lived or is some uber "well meaning" perfectionist everything must be clean type guy who really believes in what he's saying to such a degree that he would abuse people if it meant he would be adhering to his chosen set of values
Paul Giamatti is so good here. Per usual.
Paul Giamatti was born to play roles like this.
I’m currently reading Brian Wilson’s book memoir , and it really makes me upset and mad at how he was treated by doctor Landy.
:/
As someone who's been through the ringer of the corrupt mental health industry, this scene is extremely accurate
No licensed mental health practitioner should ever treat a client this way. If you acted this way to a client in my state, they would take your license away. This may have been more common in the 1960s but it's explicitly illegal today.
@@wolfumz its just as common as it ever was.
@@wolfumz This happened up to 1991, people exploited the weak then and they do now
I cant believe his family let it go that far
How could his family not even let him have the proper help he needed earlier in his life & then leave him in the care of Landy?
I know. But his Dad was a asshole . his mom no clue, and his brothers busy in their own world I grew up with the Beach boysand I was always confused like Brian wouldn't be up on stage or at a event now I know why, 30 yrs later the movie made me cryIm not a crier, I just learned that Dennis Wilson had hung out with Charlie Manson WOW blew me away it was brief but how scary is that Dam Hollywood crazy as it is drama and all don't need a killer in the mix
I do. I can totally believe that they looked for a way to not be responsible to love and care for a family member who is mentally ill. It took someone else taking responsibility for him for them to rally around him getting free.
where the hell was carl during all this?
Carl and Brian were not on good terms for the last two decades of Carl's life, according to Peter Ames Carlin's book "Catch a Wave"
This scene (along with others) terrified the real Brian Wilson because Giamatti’s performance reminded him of Landy. Even crazier is that Melinda said that Landy was much worse in real life.
Brian’s wife said that the real Dr. Landy was even worse than this
I keep imagining - what if Giamatti had also played Murry Wilson? It would fit that Landy and Murry Wilson were played by the same actor, because they filled basically the same role in Brian's life - profiting off of him while controlling him with emotional blackmail and outright abuse disguised as love and loyalty.
They even looked vaguely similar.
That would be a confusing and dumb creative choice!
@@vegasvanga5442 Not confusing or dumb if executed correctly, but it's not necessary to the story nor movie tbh. Also would cost more too.
Mr. Darling and Captain Hook are usually played by the same actor in most adaptations of Peter Pan, so stuff like this has happened before.
Giamatti is a freaking legend!!!!! I mean seriously, he is one of the greatest actors to come out way. 👏
I try to watch EVERYTHING Giamatti is in. He's beyond brilliant. Eminently watchable! P.S. Same goes for Cusack.
At first you'd think the title suggests the burger was angry.
All he wanted was love and a real friend!!!
And a bloody burger.
And not starve.
I love watching Giamatti. This was such an underappreciated bio-pic. I had stumbled upon it and never even heard about it when it was out.
I watched the movie today and liked it a lot, but watching this scene really hurts. Cusack looks so innocent, completely out of it on psych drugs just wanting a snack. And he gets screamed at like a dog. And his expression is so helpless. Not good! But good movie.
Let me guess...BBC 1 last week?
Dude I’m glad you agree. Something about him saying “I’m hungry, Gene” almost like asking to be fed like a 5 year old child as a 40 year old man just breaks my heart. Something about the innocence.
@@daniellund9153 I don't know why, but I'm somehow comparing this scene to the situation in "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree" in which Brian Wilson is Pooh, Melinda and the burger are Gopher and the honey pot, while Landy is Rabbit.
I’m definitely not getting good vibrations from this seen.
Man, the casting in this film is f***ing perfect. Paul Dano as a young Brian Wilson in his most earnest and creative era. John Cusack as the more-reclusive and damaged Brian following the mental breakdown. Paul Giamatti as the insufferable and abusive psychologist taking advantage of Brian's vulnerable state. This whole film feels like a labor of love for Brian's story and I'm surprised it isn't considered one of the greatest biopics of all time
The same thing is happening to Britney Spears now.
She's free now.
That scene always makes me sad. Good movie, have it on dvd
Paul Giamatti is gold in this movie.
I'm starting to see who really needs "special treatment", and I'm not talking about Brian.

Giamatti's performance is remarkable.

Who in the flunk is "Rob"?
I'm not sure, but my guess is that "Rob" was probably one of those extra three or four guys who were sitting with Brian, Melinda, and Landy at that cookout. Landy had several goons (known as "The Surf Nazis") who took turns watching Brian at his house when he was under Landy's 24-hour-a-day "therapy." They wrote down and recorded everything Brian said/did, supplied drugs to Brian (according to Landy's instructions), and reported everything back to Landy. They also went with and followed Brian everywhere he went whenever Brian went out in public somewhere. I don't remember hearing that any of those goons were named "Rob..." I'm guessing that "Rob" was probably a generic name that they used for this film to avoid lawsuits. Just my guess, though. In his autobiography ("I Am Brian Wilson"), Brian doesn't mention this particular incident, but he does say that Landy used to have cookouts at Brian's house, and that he (Landy) only invited his doctor friends, family members, and staff employees to said cookouts. Brian's own family and friends weren't allowed.
i have no idea but the title of “angry burger scene” had me dead
I am laughing so hard right now LMAO😭😭😭😭😭😭
I'm thinking that Brian had a stroke and Landy instead of helping him he stole everything he could from Brian! When Landy didn't mind losing his license because he thought he wouldn't have to work again!! But Landy is trying get a
When a therapist makes you question a basic instinct like hunger...He must win for Holdovers now!
Wow. That was unnecessary
he's like my cat
This is literally how my mother used to speak to me.
He was hungry....
My God, the poor man! As someone who got such great treatment from her psychotherapist, who really helped me turn my life around, I can't express enough how painful it is to watch this psychological abuse... which has zero to do with help and everything to do with power and control. You can tell how much Melinda wants to interfere just to end his suffering for a second but is just too shocked and also doesn't want to make it even worse. Top-notch acting from everybody.
Wait for your turn
What was this guy’s deal?
Have you ever heard of the goose that laid the golden egg?
Brian is the goose that can't stop laying golden eggs. Everybody who has ever come into his life has done nothing but try to force him to lay more golden eggs faster so they can make money off of him.
Based on my lifetime of amateur research, I have concluded that so-called "doctor" Landy started off with the best of intentions but, once he developed a full understanding and appreciation for Brian, his genius, and the ease with which he could be manipulated, the temptation was just too great for Eugene.
It's also obvious that old Gene has some serious control issues which can never be sorted out.
The man saved Brian's life and got him cleaned up and healthy. Twice.
But, I also believe Landy hatched a plan to "accidentally" kill Brian to reap the benefits of having Brian will everything to him
did he poison the burger or something?
No. Doctor Landy was overly strict about Brian Wilson's new diet plan that he would keep food behind locked cabinets and enforce meals the doctor personally approved of. His explosive reaction to Brian eating the burger illustrates it.
If I was John Cusack I would of laughed my ass off.
There's a lot to like about this movie, but John Cusack couldn't look less like the person he's meant to be.
I agree with this 100%. My god it really took me out of the movie sometimes.
Mr.Sensitive But he acted it so well! this is coming from a Wilson fan who was ready be disappointed by John Cusack in this movie!
hippojuice23 I confess I've only seen clips from it and they haven't persuaded me I should go see it. I don't really know why I said there's a lot to like about it. Lol. What was I thinking? Perhaps the part with the younger actor (Paul Dano, I think) playing Brian; maybe that was worth it. And of course there's the music...
I think it meshed so well! It was beautifully portrayed.
Honestly-- have to disagree with you guys. John Cusack really captured Brian Wilson circa 1988. Google image search Brian in the mid-late 1980s and you'll see a resemblance.
he deserved so much better :/
I still don't know why he got mad at him.
It's about control....I had a mother similar to the doc.

Everyone talks about how good Dano and Giamatti are in this film... and ye, that's totally true. But are we going to ignore just how good Cusack is as Brian?
Dano portrayed a younger Brian so perfect . I was completely blown away...
Everyone was great in the movie, whoever did the casting was spot on but, Paul Dano was just so amazing it's difficult to think of the other actors when they are all linked together...
Bald guy looks like Artie Bucco
Wait why tf did he get angry at him for eating a burger
Dr. Eugene Landy exerted around-the-clock control over Brian’s life, monitoring his diet and love-life and kept him drugged on heavy medication for what he falsely claimed was a mix of paranoid schizophrenia and manic depression.
@@AstraVex oohhhhhhhh I see! It makes sense! So basically he's controlling and manipulating him into doing whatever he wants?

John Cusack as Brian Wilson? Terrible casting. Cusack had to have known he was terrible through the whole movie.
Was Cusack ever a good actor?

Your wrong, he was amazing in this movie. His acting was so realistic and similar to Brian from the 80's. You clearly don't know what your talking about, sorry.
@@miguelthekewlkid272 Cusack plays the same character in every movie, John Cusack.
@@richardmckrell4899 Let's say that's true. If it was, then that's amazing casting because he fit the role perfectly. In the movie, he had the voice of brian, the physical tics and mannrrisms, etc. He genuinely looked like someone who was not ok physically and mentally. SPECIALLY in this scene, look how he opens his mouth to defend himself when Landy is shouting at him, but nothing comes out. He is almost trapped in his own body.
Bad casting, cusack is not a good choise
Why do they have to use such awful profanity when they make movies like this. Taking the name of God in vain over and over. I was going to rent the movie, but the profanity is not acceptable.
