Goes to show how much John Cusack truly cared about the story, Brian, and the movie. When asked at 17:21 about the importance of this movie to him, he brings up about how Brian produced/arranged/directed/wrote all the songs himself (majority writing with small adjustments made by co-writers) and then compared it to the beatles and how they had one producer and two song writers (three separate people). This is a point I like to make all the time to people to genuinely show how impressive what Brian Wilson was doing (I also throw in the back to back #1 singles and highest top 40 hits for a band, plus that the beatles had four musicians to help form and refine tracks compared to one person). I haven’t seen another person make this point before so it brings me a lot of joy knowing that John cared enough to think and make these points genuinely (without direct provocation)

@@carolynchristymartinez9119 While Murray pushed Brian in his music endeavors, he was also physically and emotionally abusive. The reason Brian is deaf in his right ear is because when he was 2 years old Murray hit him in the head with a two by four. Brian is a very sensitive person and was very hard on himself because Murray was always hard on him, arguably more than Dennis and Carl. Brian struggled with the fear of never pleasing his father. That's partly why he felt driven and competitive with music.

VERY touching movie which I personally strongly identify with - especially the male emotional abuse and the resultant music that can come from pain & loss when focused creatively which is a real cathartic experience. I've watched it several times. Highly recommended.
I love when Cusack said that later in Brian's life "the two halves of that person unified a bit." I think on some level we all have different sides of ourselves we are trying to connect, though most of us don't have sides writing "God Only Knows" :)
This film got me into the Beach Boys, ngl. Always enjoyed the odd track from the surf era, but when I tried to listen to Pet Sounds I just wasn't ready. I'm amazed at how the music is communicated. Both on this and SMiLE. I still can't believe Brian's life story. I'm a big fan of musicians who emerge the other side of immense difficulty and drug dependency. John Frusciante and Syd Barrett in particular. The fact that we still have this man is a miracle and I love that we lived at the same time.
John Cusack and Paul Dano hit it out of the park with their renditions of this lovely man and his struggles. Awesome to see Brian endorsing this movie as well! It is well deserved, because it is a truly endearing and heart-felt portrait of the man.
I'm watching the movie right now; I love it! My initial thoughts into the movie, right after he begins seeing the car sales lady, was, "Brian Wilson is a genius!" I believe this movie could really help and minister to a lot of creative people all over the world. It has certainly inspired the writer in me, including the personal life testimony. Thank You Brian Wilson for sharing your life with us. God Bless You.
I don't think many people realize how so much of our music today is written and produced and sounds the way it does because of the breakthrough recording sessions and the way that Brian Wilson conducted music.
This is my favourite biopic, it does something different from a movie like Bohemian Rhapsody. It does not use the usual formula, but each charachter descirbes different parts from their life instead of using flashbacks. Rocketman does also a fantastic job with the musical aspect, but Love and Mercy also captures more of the creative part of Brian more than any other music biopic i've seen.
Tge way that the movie was presented was brilliant because it wasnt a movie from his life of the 60's till 80's bit went back and forth showing howvthe brian in the suto deslership became the way he was.
Learning about this man's surrealistic, tortuous & tragic experiences that he either suffered alone, (as it seemed hard to open up about it, not to mention the stigma surrounding such issues at that time & even if he had, I could'nt imagine anyone capable of relating to such unique & complex circumstances as his), or sparks of hope of actually getting help being dashed by an opportunistic, controlling person with the most horrific motivation taking advantage of his torment & increasing his isolation, to the point of stealing his life & any enjoyment he might have derived or whatever pleasure he may have been able to pursue, under the guise of helping him! The film was the most heart wrenching I'd ever seen. I had no idea about it before & of course while ensuring the validity & getting a little more in-depth info just made it more so. It's common for films to make the main characters more relatable, sympathetic & likable but looking into this man after watching it, you realize none of that was necessary. He truly was that open, that vulnerable, that honest, that compassionate & everything he was portrayed to be. He was someone who you'd just instinctively want to do everything within your power to help! Yet, he suffered in silence. Only one other film has ever elicited such a strong emotional impact from me to that extent & that person's life unfortunately ended in tragedy. At least Brian Wilson finally got a happy ending, complete with solace, comfort, support, companionship & love! It's wonderful that he was once again able to find passion & love in his music & is now surrounded by family! God Bless this man!
All of this praise, he gets it everywhere and has for years, but he's still profoundly sad about something. We'll never figure out what it is from his songs because they're all so beautiful and positive. He's lucky John Cusack is involved because he's one of the best actors in the world.
I think it must be the mental/physical/emotional abuse he and his brothers suffered at the hands of their father. That would destroy anyone for life, but thankfully Brian had an outlet in music.
@@cat_623It’s almost unbelievable how much an adult can screw over a child. The looks and words from my dad were worse than his fists. I loved this movie, but thought they could have went a little further towards today. Maybe a part 2 ??? It would have been nice to see Brian reunite with the Mike and Alan and David for the 50th anniversary tour in 2012.
The fact that I know who the Beach Boys are and that you know who the Beach Boys are and heard of Surfin' USA is a test of time itself! I'm only 28 years old born in 1990!
Poor Brian is very medicated. Does everyone love Brian? Yeah, maybe Mike Love doesn’t, but the rest of us do. The rest of the humans on the earth who know who he is.
When did Mike Love EVER say he didn't love Brian?? No one ever looks at it from Mike's point of view. The Beach Boys hit it big and Brian has a break down and leaves. Mike just wanted to get out there and play. Then Brian lies in bed for years. Then Brian didn't give Mike his credit for writing the songs. Brian and his father Murray leave Mike out of the contract behind his back. Murray sells all the Beach Boy songs without telling Mike. Then Mike can't get near Brian for years because he is with Dr. LANDY. And still through all that, Mike says he loves Brian. He's just tired of all of Brian's bullshit and sicknesses and depressions and breakdowns. Mike just wants to play music and get laid and have fun. Two different people from two different worlds. I think considering everything, the fact that Mike still loves Brian is amazing and a credit to him.
How about we let Brian slow down? Hope that Melinda is not pushing him too hard the way Landy did. He takes some serious drugs to keep him on the sanity track and that and his age take their toll on him. So...I don't want to see his squeezed for all his worth just to get another tour out of him; especially the tours. Man, alive, is he really going to do more tours in 2021? Please reconsider this. Let him just not have any other commitments but to relax and do what he feels like doing even if it is just to sit in the big lazy boy chair and stare at the wall!
I read somewhere that people have asked him about retiring, and he answered that he could never do that because he wouldn't know what to do with his time. I think he genuinely wants to keep at it.

Beachy Keen I think that may have more to do with either age, or a side effect of medication, such as mood stabilizers. I’m assuming he’s still being medicated for his psychiatric conditions.
He has a genius mind, which is not your average brain. He is currently on an effective medication regimen which could dull his conversations. I'm pretty sure he had a stroke sometime in the past, looks like it was on his right side.
@@Marimilitarybrat actually. Brian talks about that in his book. No he didn't have a stroke. He started talking like that because he is deaf in his right ear. So he started talking more out of his left side. He does comment on it.
1. He's an old man, old people shake. 2. He has social and general anxiety, something that he will continue to deal with the rest of his life. I too have anxiety and am medicated for it, if I don't take my meds...my hands shake uncontrollably when I'm nervous
I love how Brian immediately buries that nobody at the end over "wasted time." It's like, what do you think would happen after you climb Mount Olympus in the music industry, start over and try again? He just removed himself from the chaos and it was known as "time in bed."Only his wife, family, and Landy know that story.
I love how the movie shows that Brian was hearing voices way before ever trying psychedelics. I firmly believe that schizophrenia is really being psychic. Brian had learned to listen to the Music of the Spheres to come up with his music a long time. When you tune into the spiritual world, you are of course likely to also become a magnet to lost spirits. I think the answer to handling spirits is learning Magick.
His performance was really good (the mannerisms could be a little distracting sometimes, I think he went just little bit over the top sometimes) but I think Bill Murray would have made an amazing 80’s Brian.
I loved the film the younger him was my main focus he really showed the things he went through but grown up him John cusak kinda took me out of it I feel like he didn’t fit the vibe at all tbh I fast forward through every scene with him because it didn’t really make me feel like it was Brian but young him really gave me a good sense of his essence.
Brian, Brian Brian... that's all everyone talks about. Well the Beach Boys weren't just Brian Wilson. And people always say Mike love doesn't love Brian. When did Mike Love EVER say he didn't love Brian?? No one ever looks at it from Mike's point of view. The Beach Boys hit it big and right when they are going to tour all over, Brian has a break down and leaves the group forcing them to get replacements. Mike just wanted to get out there and play. Then Brian lies in bed for years. Then Brian decides he didn't want the Beach Boys playing instruments on the records because he wants to be like Phil Spector. Well let me tell you, NOBODY played the drums better than Dennis. Then Brian didn't give Mike his credit for writing the songs. Then Brian and his father Murray leave Mike out of the contract behind his back. Then Murray sells all the Beach Boy songs without telling Mike. Then Mike can't get near Brian for years because he is with Dr. LANDY. And still through all that, Mike says he loves Brian. He's just tired of all of Brian's bullshit and sicknesses and depressions and breakdowns. It's always about Brian, Brian, Brian. Mike just wants to play music, have fun, make people happy and dance. Two different people from two different worlds. I think considering everything, the fact that Mike still loves Brian is amazing and a credit to him. ❤
If you’re young it was always there but to those of us who were there when these LPs came out it exists in a certain context. Some of Pet Sounds was disappointing. But a few tracks were not only great they were right on time because The Beach Boys singing about cars, the beach, girls, was great but more albums like that would have been over kill. The beach party movies, that whole era, which included the British Invasion, was naturally fading. 1967 had different and a bit more mature music. Groups which stayed with a 1964 sound, didn’t sell. If you were there you saw the whole thing come to a head in 1969. Rock n roll 1955-1969. An American youth musical renaissance .
Mmm so which parts on pet sounds are disappointing? Also you are saying nothing new in regards to the evution of music in the 60s, we all know this as it's been said a million times! And guess what?? Pet sounds was that album tbat changed music for evermore.. Disappointing parts of pet sounds 🤔! You need help.. No offence
Cusack is a great actor but it's hard to see him as Brian Wilson because they look so different. Different facial structure, different build different hairlines. They may as well have got Robert DeNiro.
No offense but I just can't see John Cusack as Brian. He is a bit on the homely side and looks nothing like him. He was also a bit old to play Brian's younger parts.
Good thing he didn't play young Brian. Regarding the looks, it doesn't matter if they look similar, so much as whether Cusack can capture the essence of Brian. When that happens, so does suspension of disbelief, and a wonderful film is made.
You're right, the interviewer is cringe worthy. Just another hapless young guy who really has no business doing this job. Unfortunately, the last question by the audience member wasn't really asked well, to start, and was not answered well, or correctly , by Brian. Speculation has been that Landy had Brian on such strong, varied, and incorrect meds, that they have had had long term damaging effects on Brian's condition more so than the original, underlying "medical" symptoms he presented 45 years ago. Regardless, Brian functions with an ongoing mix of pharmacueticals to combat a variety of issues.
I wish they would have used “unknown” actors instead of the typical Hollyweird slug! Brian deserved to be depicted by good actors instead of the typical Hollyweird usuals!
I love how John seems to really look out for Brian...being very complimentary, repeating questions for Brian, making sure to laugh/react to Brian's comments, double checking before he speaks on Brian's behalf...it really warms the heart. They seem to really have formed a bond.

From someone who also deals with intense anxiety, my hands shake and tremble uncontrollably when I'm nervous. I believe the same happens to him
Dr. Landy. Dr Landy is the man! Everyone! Dr. Landy! Aaaahhhhh......
Brian is shaking alot. I sincerely hope he is well in health.
He has a genius mind, which is not your average brain. He is currently on an effective medication regimen which could dull his conversations. I'm pretty sure he had a stroke sometime in the past, looks like it was on his right side.
The shaking is a side effect of psych meds.
He could also be anxious! I find with anxiety myself stage freight never really goes away!
Was the last question kind of rude?
Good movie....
I do like hearing all of their answers, but there are so many questions for john and bill about brian. It's awkward really
Where’s Paul Dano?
Bill Pohlad’s brother Jim, owns the Minnesota Twins baseball team.
Bill Pohlad is a genius.
I love how Brian immediately buries that nobody at the end over "wasted time." It's like, what do you think would happen after you climb Mount Olympus in the music industry, start over and try again? He just removed himself from the chaos and it was known as "time in bed."Only his wife, family, and Landy know that story.
Anyone find it strangely ironic that Brian's life was portrayed by actors named John and Paul? Lol
Do they ask interviews that interview Brian to talk that rapid?
Sounds to me like Wouldn't it be Nice autobiography put to film
I love how the movie shows that Brian was hearing voices way before ever trying psychedelics. I firmly believe that schizophrenia is really being psychic. Brian had learned to listen to the Music of the Spheres to come up with his music a long time. When you tune into the spiritual world, you are of course likely to also become a magnet to lost spirits. I think the answer to handling spirits is learning Magick.
Yikes. Dangerously naive and misguided mindset here
@@animalbancho1726 Yikes, lazy dismissive comment with no insight.
enjoyed the movie
Paul Dano is perfectly cast.. not sure about Cusack.
His performance was really good (the mannerisms could be a little distracting sometimes, I think he went just little bit over the top sometimes) but I think Bill Murray would have made an amazing 80’s Brian.
Cusack doesn't look so much like him, but he very much talks and acts like him.
I actually think Alan Ruck would’ve made a great 80s Brian.
Becah boys history birian Wilson
god this host
he annoyed me too
So annoying
Nervous and felt like he had a lot to prove. He made it about himself
The Beatles had 4 songwriters
Exactly crazy how they only say Paul and John no George lol
No offence
John cusack is fine af
Brian was a lot older than John Kusack is in this movie.
50th anniversary years movie history home Hollywood Tcm movie's beach boys
Cusack is a great actor but it's hard to see him as Brian Wilson because they look so different. Different facial structure, different build different hairlines. They may as well have got Robert DeNiro.
I agree' I'm the beach boys number one fan. I haven't seen this movie and was put off by knowing Cusack is in it's I didnt know what part he played
No offense but I just can't see John Cusack as Brian. He is a bit on the homely side and looks nothing like him. He was also a bit old to play Brian's younger parts.
John Cusack does look convincing enough as Brian from the 80's. But he doesn't play young Brian. Paul Dano did.

TheStark345 Brian definitely barely makes any sense
Brendan Lake
He lets his music do the talking.
I wish they would have used “unknown” actors instead of the typical Hollyweird slug!
Brian deserved to be depicted by good actors instead of the typical Hollyweird usuals!
first person who asked a question talked way too long, bro recited a monologue
Was his therapist an MD or a licensed psychologist or just a charlatan?
Kerstin Dahlqvist
He was a sociopath masquerading as a psychologist.
