Fun Fact! Commander Eternities Map (or "Blind Eternities video") was actually created by Commander Rules Committee member Gavin Duggan!
How many Gavins do we have around here?
O
@@jdonvance I was just thinking the same thing. LOL
How does hidden rule work?
So glad you like it! Raziel, I and our local play group had a great time building it!
Planechase is my favorite way to play commander with friends, especially when we all decide to bust out some of our lower power decks
I know exactly what you mean, it adds a chaos element that makes casual games much more entertaining. I remember once one of my friends was playing their Brudiclad deck and we landed on the plane that gives you the 7/7 eldrazi with annihilator, was terrifyingly hilarious when he made all his tokens a copy lol
Weird because I love it with our best decks... it levels the field in my opinion
Thank God there's an app, this sounds so fun but having an ever expanding map in the middle of a 4 player commander game sounded like a lot. Thanks raziel
I think the expanding part is addressed in the game where if a plane is more than 4 spaces away it gets shuffled back into the deck. As far as I understood, it doesn't get replaced unless someone makes their way back over there. Even still I think that it would take up more space than a playmat.
It would be nice if they reprinted the Planechase Anthology set and then included smaller versions of the planechase cards. I think half the size is big enough. In my experience only one person can ever read it anyway, so they might as well make them smaller. LOL
@@Kattywagon29 the map can still get large...
@@Soulus101 I was actually talking to my son about that yesterday. I don't know where you are, but I am in Florida and I haven't been to a game shop since March due to Covid. Luckily, my son is college age and still lives at home. We play commander several times a week - keeps my sanity.
Anyway, we discussed this variant, and even though we have a huge dining table that can seat8 people, we decided to limit the Eternities Map to a playmat size. We're gonna try it out today to see if we can make that work.
Professor, there is a variant for Commander that is only spoken of in myths and Legends: Planechase Archenemy EDH.
With the Explorer's of Ixalan expansion as well!
We did Planechase Archenemy and Vanguard one time. Never again.
i believe you forgot chaos magic in there
@@christopherlundgren1700 have you tried vanguard EDH, it's weird as hell
@@Aedi i assume vanguards +/- needs to be heavily adjusted to play with them? some vanguards seems to be complately busted for almost no downside.
Planechase, the best Board game-ish content wizards needs to do again.
Game Nights? nah... Oathbreaker-like Planechase PreCon would be EPIC.
Game Nights definitely seems like a waste of time and money. I understand what they were trying to do, but it just didn't hit the mark.
YAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
@@Kattywagon29 The decks in Game Nights were good starter decks (for me) but yeah, overall not that much fun to play with/against. Explorers of Ixalan however is a great way to get newbs into Planechase without the added complexity :D
@@Kattywagon29 those decks are better than >> Planeswalker decks.
@@EpicMTGMusic MTG players are always trying to get other people hooked on MTG. You can ask almost anyone at an LGS to build you a deck and they'd do it for free and give you some bulk cards from their collection to boot.
Jebus.... hit me right in the heart with "Trying to make Thalid tribal work"
Don't Truffle with me, I play Thelon of Havenwood.
"Guys, we're gonna need a bigger table"
A common way to play is to remove all placechase cards that are further than 2 cards away. So at max, a 5x5 square of cards will be at the table at the same time. Remove cards further away when you planeswalk.
@@improbitas1009 who are you who are so wise in the ways of science
The planechase cards are actual oversize to make matters even worse
"The experience is better without combo decks."
Oftentimes this is true in general in MTG, especially in casual play.
Newer to Mtg, didn't even know these existed, I want to try them!
my playgroup always plays with the planechase cards. i own everyone of this beautiful oversized cards and we put it in the middle of the table. there is a planechase deck, a discard pile and a exile for them. the active plane is always on top of the planechase deck. if someone planeswalks away, it goes on the discardpile. as long as it remains there, the next player who planeswalk can choos between the old world (discard pile) or a new one. if he/she chooses a new one, the discardpile card goes to graveyard and the last plane in discard place and we reveal the new world. if he/she choose the old world, then the card on top of the planechasedeck goes to the graveyard. the active card goes on top of the planechase deck.
and counters on planes leaves these only in graveyard.
and phenomens goes in the graveyard too.
and if we play more than one round, we leave everything like it was at the end of the previous game, so every plane has it chance to get played.
we love this playtype since planechace was released.
Nice
I have always felt that the Prof has been my go-to for anything magic- this video solidifies exactly that. I forgot about the fun of Planechase! Looking forward to this variant.
Which is good cause they are coming back in march of the machines
I would like them see print new Planes cards - even perhaps as some box toppers.
How bout with commander pre-cons?
@@falconJB Nah, that sounds silly, WotC will never do that
@@VellanShadow Yeah, but what if the precons were really bad and they needed to put a bonus in to get people to buy them?
@@falconJB Dog, those Knights slap tho.
@@kakashijr193 And what of the rest of the decks?
Not having money is a great way to avoid format staples and keep your decks unique! Thanks, secondary market and Wizards reprint policy!
😂
In the spirit of "everything is draft" from commander legends, I'm holding out for that planechase draft
I absolutely love Eternities Map, and it was absolutely the inspiration for me to design planes based on the newest planes we've visited. Thank you for the shout out, and I hope I get a chance to play Eternities Map with you in the future, professor!

YESSS PLANECHASE!!!
This man (professor) truely speaks for the people~~~
As always, thank you Prof, for your time and effort dedicated to educating the magic base!
My very good friend recently purchased a rather large old collection which has a full plane chase deck!
We will definitely be using this video and the resources in the video to try this formatting.
I loooooove that you made this video! I played a ton of Planechase in college when the first two sets came out (I have of course kept my plane collection) and we always elected to play Eternities Map because of the board game-like experience. I'm so happy to see it still being discussed, and the app looks sweet.
Been waiting for this video for years since you last mentioned you'd make one for this variant of Planechase. I wasn't able to find anything about how it's played at the time and just kinda forgot about it. Definitely suggesting this on our next online game night!
Why has my group never done this before!! I LOVE THIS CONCEPT. Thanks Prof!!
Another great video Prof.
Love Planechase.
Thank you.
Been a huge fan of Planechase, and the Eternities Map for a long time! I've had the article from the mothership bookmarked since 2010. I was fortunate enough when the original planechase was in print to pick up all four of the decks, and although I've not kept them together, I kept all of the planar cards. I managed to grab the Maelstrom Wanderer deck in 2012, as well as the Celestine Reef promo when it was in print. We've got a few players in our group that have picked up the full planechase collection at this point, but most of us are happy using my bag of tricks! Thanks for the video Prof! Sharing it with the group!
I’ve had an interest in trying this out ever since I managed to get the Night of the Ninja Planechase deck last year! It looks super fun!
PROF,, there are so many reasons why I love your channel, but I would say that finding out about new things is the best! Who knows when I would have heard of this variant.
As a gift, I received my Planechase cards from the Planechase Anthology box set. I frequently use them with friends/family the "normal" way, but this seems like a pretty cool way to try it, especially the hellrider part - There's nothing worse than being stuck on a plane that no one wants to be on.
Thanks again for the wonderful content!
I had an interesting Idea I would like to test for how to modify this. Give each player some sort of Meeple and Allow each player to Planeswalk independently from one another.
Spells and abilities only hit players who are in the same plane as you and you can attack only players who are in the same plane as you. If we simply say alternate win condition cards don't function in this varient it would seem most infinites except for those resulting in infinite turns would be ok because infinites that win you the game would require you be on the same square as the other people.
Also maybe if we allow more than one planeswalk per turn by say making them cost mana at a rate of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16,
with say 1/6 2/6 3/6 4/6 5/6 6/6 Chance of Phenomenon occurring.
For example My Ayli deck has a loop in it that can result in Infinite life for me which I can then funnel into Aetherflux reservoir but if Mary, Joseph and Steve have all decided they want to go off in different directions from the start and I'm not where they are sure I can spend my time durdling over in tolaria hoping to draw into my loop. Then gain my 1,000,000 life have my reservoir ready build up some mana and then go Ok, I am going to spend 3 mana to try to planeswalk 3 times Hopefully over to where Joeseph is and Aetherflux him but I don't have enough mana to get to the other two this turn.
meanwhile they are making some deals to not attack each other and Mary can say "I spend 15 man and planeswalk to you with my voltron general in play and Commander damage you out of the game,
So is each players location secret?
I've been advocating for planechase in my playgroup for months. Maybe this will change their mind. Thanks prof!
man your style is unbeatable, that red in your jacket is incredible!
Thank you so much to bring up such a fun idea! This looks amazing prof!
Fantastic!!! Can’t wait to implement this into my Commander games. Thanks Prof!
Coming here after the most recent precons. Thanks for the video!!!
How have I never heard of planechase?! Thanks professor. This is cool.
wow our play group never thought of using them old cards for playing EDH! thanks Prof.
I am so glad I bought the whole set of planechase cards couple years back. I need to get my friends to play this with me. :D
Thank you again prof. I nearly forgot how much I love Planechase.
I own the cards but having a quick app that can be used instead is great. Depending on how it's set up, it can easily get rid of any accusations of stacking the planar deck.
Another great video! I really look forward to finding a paper magic community to play this with!
I just watched your old Planescape video yesterday and I was wondering where this vid was!
I have never done planechase but i have played Choas and Commander together.... i really like this eternities map variant looks amazing i can't wait to try.
Great video, really want to try this now. one other multiplayer variant that I really enjoy is the Explorers of Ixalan, which adds a nice little extra layer to your standard commander game.
My playgroup actually took Planechase to a new level. We each pick one of the Planes and whenever our Commander is on the battlefield, the Plane is in effect.
That sounds wild. I like it.
Feel like a lot of these would be OP to have access to at any time you have your commander. Like, literal game ending.
Great video, really want to try this out. Thanks for the great content. The other variant I enjoy is the explorers of Ixalon game, which also works well with commander.
Now I really want an extra turns episode with Prof playing with Eternities map.
I didnt know this format existed i love planeschase and want to try this especially with the hellriding phenomena rule it sounds great
I was not at all sold on this til you mentioned the fan-made software. I am absolutely on board to have that manage the map for me rather than trying to lay all my planes out on the table (even though I own them all!) Digital help tools for the win!
Ey prof, thanks for covering eternities map! It's awesome to play.
Excellent video! Thanks, Prof!
Definitely going to be trying this out.
Nice, this is a good way to improve planechase for commander.
I used to love to play Planechase Eternities online using OTCGN, I even bought the Planechase Anthology just in case one day I have friends.
Wow I've been playing my own Planechase variant that I call Planechase Compass that is awfully similar to this! I had no idea there was a collective community effort for variants such as this!
Thanks Professor! I bought Planeschase Anthology awhile back because it seemed like a fun way to add variety to commander, and while it is fun, most of the people I play with are turned off by the high level of randomness it adds to the games. I had no idea this variant existed, but it seems like the perfect way to mitigate that randomness while simultaneously adding more strategy. I'm gonna toss together a 40 card planar deck right away and give it a try next time I sit down in a casual pod! Hopefully this will let me get a little more use out of my planar cards, and it gives me a good excuse to look at more cards (particularly, oversized planar cards) and build more decks (not that I really needed another excuse to look at cards).
Nice take! Thank you Prof!
Prof you need to bring this to the command zone! This would be so fun to watch. Tribal decks only! Pick a number from a hat for which plane you represent. This could be sick!
I cannot like this enough. Definitely gonna try it!
Thanks again professor didn't even know this was a thing.
I played with planes cards in my local magic store, is really fun!
Aside from the great showcase, thanks Prof, this video excellently showcases how Planechase is a literal treasure trove that Wizards should have expanded a long time ago. Though given their recent business practices I'm not sure if I'd want to see them do it now :(
Amazing content as always
Sounds like fun! I'll try it out
This sounds like so much fun!!! I wish I had people to play with :(
I used to play this type of commander games with my playgroup 3 years ago... all I can say is it is a ton of fun and no two games are the same... some can end very quickly if the correct (or wrong, depending on your point of view) plane is chosen,or it can stretch for an enormous amount of time... I remember playing like 2 games of planechase commander for like 8 hours... so yeah, that's about 4 hours per game. it is very dependent on the power levels of your decks but I would highly recommend everyone tries it out at least once... it's a blast.
I've been waiting for this video!
This...may be what I've been looking for. Not as something to play myself, but rather as a solution to a problem I've been having with a different variant I came up with. Still working out logistics, but using parts of this rule set, alongside a modified map, could be the solution I've been looking for
I've played planechase commander with a single shared deck. Essentially anyone can roll the die on their turn as a sorcery.
It resulted in one of the most epic games I've ever played.
This map variation looks interesting.
I'm giving this variant a go with my playgroup, now that I picked up the recently released planes from the precons.
Think it would be a good idea for WotC to start adding Plane cards to booster box toppers? Say, Kessig in Innistrad: Werewolves, and the like?
I'd prefer if they switched the ad cards ( which were tokens until they changed it) for that. But that's probably not going to happen.
@@aeonblade64 Plane cards are a different size. You can't put them into the boosters themselves.
@snakeman380 oh I haven't seen them in person so I didn't know. But box toppers would be nice.
I feel like this needs a signal boost now that the new Planechase commander decks are out!
This addition to magic does spice things up dramatically
Awesome video Prof ... cant wait to see you on Game Knightsssssss Again
My play group loves Archenemy and Planeschase together as it feels like a epic fight
This is a great suggestion and rules breakdown. Would you make a similar video for some rules concerning a way to balance Archenemy? Your original video only outlines the basic format rules, but it’s pretty difficult to make work when you’re teaming up three player-designed commander decks rather than three precons. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to make it more fun, but it always ends up tilted too far in one side’s favor.
SOUNDS AWESOME!
I'm writting and brainstorming a way of combing Explorers of Ixalan, Planechase Eternities Map, Archenemy Nicol Bolas. So it feels a new adventure each game. On a side note probably everything withing a cube Commander.
Adding this variant plus starting monarch maybe the best way to play commander.
I really hope the do more Planechase cards for the D&D set
I'd like you to cover Commander Adventures, there is a whole lot of custom content and playstyles to be had and all for free on tappedout
planechase commander sounds so much fun!
Oh man I love this got to try it.
Edit: can we petition WotC to either release a Planechase and Archenemy set because planechase cards are expensive.
Please talk about Planeschase Archenemy!
Exactly!
Great! Thanks for the Inspiration
Great for strengthening the immersion that everyone fears will die
I'd be all for Wizards reprinting Planechase. I never got a chance to play it because it was gone before I started playing Magic but it looks like a great addition to a game of Commander
It would be interesting to see your opinion on horde mode decks. Doesn't have to be with commander decks but the Co-op magic format is very interesting and my playgroup has had some fun taking on a Zombie horde together. Crafting a custom horde for your playgroup to take on can be especially rewarding as well.
We usually play a smaller version of this variant (only 2 step limit--table space is important!), but yes phenomena shuffled into the regular deck.
I really hope I can get my playgroup to try this
Prof showing players how to really have a fun time.
Given WotC is tying commander precons to the regular set release, WotC has a great opportunity to put a unique planechase card in each precon depicting places on the plane at the time of the set.
Imagine if Ikoria's commander decks each had a planechase card corresponding to each of the triomes. Compared to the oversized cards they used to include these would be much more appreciated.
9:00 It's weird you never have the simplest option. Have Phenomenon cards work just like they do normally. "Shuffle them into the deck and when placing down plane cards to fill spaces you place a Phenomenom card down if you reveal it. You can choose to go to a Phenomenom when planeswalking. When you do, it triggers, then planeswalk again until you go to a plane card. The first plane card of the game **cannot** be a Phenomenom."
I kinda want plane chase cards be printed on a standard size card... would make making a map so much easier and space saving... not difficult to pick up and read it if one needs to. Plus i think it'll look nice and not too mention so much easier to find sleeves for.
I just printed the plane and "event" cards in a regular format so I could slip them with a land in sleeves. It's pretty simple to use that way.
(I didn't even know the actual cards were larger.)
My gf, myself, and my best friend played a game of Planechase with our 60 card precons from Standard. The previous game without it was basically a wash and kinda lame. Putting Planechase in the mix made the most OP decks we had immediately drop to a level playing field because of all the crazy effects. It ended up being a slugfest and the most fun we ever had.
I hope they bring them back soon! :D
This has definitely piqued my interest. I am going to have to try it as soon as I can get my playgroup together.
I think plane cards should be box toppers too, new places being visited or old ones being affected by new events (like ravnica at war in war of the spark)
And we would have planes that we know
I've done Archenemy + Planeschase before, the group had to battle boss player through random planes, but with an additional leeway: Changing plane are done separately for each non-Archenemy player, so those on another plane could temporarily escape from the boss and its scheme effects (but that also means there would be less players to deal with the Archenemy on previous plane). Players could either planeswalk to teammate's plane or to new one, separate so the boss had to chase them down (again, might not always be the best idea, but doable).
Ok just A idea: Play scotland yard style game against the archenemy
@@seankoellewoodTV What is Scotland Yard?
This version of planechase seems dope
Thanks for this cool vide.
Seems more like exploring than the ixalan tiles😁 but I think I'll stick with that I like that it gives you a way to spend extra mana
I haven't played a proper game in a months. I keep buying cards tho. I'll have to check out the spell table video.
I have this deck it is so fun !
hmmm planechace plus jumpstart seems like it would be a potent mix to try out
