Building a Commander deck is a complex and ever-evolving process, and making sure your mana works correctly can be daunting. I’ve produced other video guides to help with building multicolor mana bases, but if you’re interested in building a Commander deck that’s only a single color, this video will help get you started by giving you a rock-solid mana base.
If you have not already seen my videos explaining what the commander format is, how to construct your first commander deck, or how to choose your commander, you may do so here, here, and here. Please note this video is meant both as a guide for players who do not know where to begin building their mana base or for players having difficulty with their existing mana base. It is not meant as the final and only word on the subject. Quite the opposite- commander is a format with a multitude of options. This video is simply meant to help those who need it, not to dictate hard or absolute rules.

Don't forget about the medallions! Emerald medallion, Ruby medallion, pearl, and jet.
They each cost only 2 Mana, and they make every spell you cast of the respective color cost 1 less. 1 less on EVERY colored spell you cast adds up very quickly! All those two Mana spells turn into one Mana spells. All those three Mana spells turn into two Mana spells. All those four Mana spells turn into three Mana spells. It effectively drops your entire curve down by an order of magnitude.

For those saying that 38+ lands are too much, consider the functions that the utility lands perform. For each color, the Professor is offering a toolbox of useful effects to bolster your deck, no matter who your Commander is or what your strategy for winning may be. Whether it be drawing cards, ramping, removing threats, providing damage support, and more, this guide shows players the importance of a healthy land count and what it can do in Commander.
The benefit of including utility lands, as well as basics are numerous. Think of the utility lands as zero cost cards that are difficult to stop. There is no spell to counter, and most removal or discard can't touch lands. The trade off of only being able to play one land per turn can be mitigated in various ways. Furthermore, as your game develops, having these reusable effects at your disposal opens up new strategies and can improve your chances of winning.
    Well said, Professor!

As a cedh player, 38 lands sounds absolutely suicidal but I understand it for battlecruiser casual games with big big spells. We would run 29 to 32 lands at most but obviously pack the whole 10 mana dorks/rocks and all the fast mana artifacts to compensate.

I am not a cEDH player but even to me 38 is a lot, I run 40 in my Windgrace deck because it only really cares about lands. Watching TCC and Commandzone telling people to run 38-40 lands just seems insane to me. At max I use 36 lands in "normal" decks with my Slivers being at 32 I think.
I guess they always want to play durdly 3 hour games... While I love playing magic games have to end at some point (that's why I don't mind mindslaver locks and infinite combos at all, just shuffle up and play a new game).

Not a cedh player myself, but I play like 7-9 (just depends on the deck). I have one deck that runs 38 (Gishath) but that’s because it simply needs it. I have one mono deck and it runs 32 and I don’t even remember a time where I was starved for mana. 38 in mono is (to me) boring, too safe, and leaves you without other interesting options.

      @anthonydelfino6171 4 года назад +1

@@poisonking8400 medallions cost the same amount of mana to cast as the signet, but reduce the cost of every spell of their respective color by 1. So in a mono color deck on turn 2 the signet might give you more value since you can cast a 1 CMC spell, but on any other turn, the medallion will reduce the cost of every spell (or almost every spell if you're looking at casting artifacts) you cast by 1 which is much more effective "ramp" in a mono colored deck than a mana rock that just taps for 1 mana.
Also I wasn't aware that the cost for them had gone down as much as it had, but for many players, if they have a signet, it's better value to put it in a 3+ color commander deck as opposed to a single color. Arcane Signet is more powerful the more colors your deck is running.

Great video Professor! I was using this guide to start crafting my first mono blue commander deck. It can tutor for utility lands as needed or utility cards with 0 CMC like Pact of Negation or Ancestral Vision, just to name a few. (Expand for next part of comment)
I also wanted to pose question. At what point should Mono Color decks consider running Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx? I'd think its an auto include in most Mono Color commander decks (its also a target for Tolaria West) but didn't see it mentioned in this video.

  • @lolimmune
    @lolimmune 4 года назад +42

Dont just assume its "jam some basics and a Nykthos"
Actually there can be a bit of nuance depending on color and strategy, several mono colored lands that do fun things like the memorials, blighted lands, and strategy specific stuff like crypt of agadeem. As a matter of fact Nykthos doesnt feel good in a spells matters deck, because often you dont have the devotion necessary to make it pop.

The best way in my opinion for any number of colors in a commander deck is run 34 (+/-2) lands. For anything above two color mana in a commander use the appropriate dual lands relevant to the heaviest color you use and use lands that come in tapped only if they provide some sort of effect such as scrying.
As an example, if my commander is Edgar Markov, I’ll be using white, black and red mana. However because it runs heavy on black I will only be using dual lands that tap for black and red or black and white. In addition, I will only be using 3 of each of the many dual colored land because of the 3 different colors on the commander. If my commander had 4 different colors then I would use 4 of those lands which are the shock lands, the check lands and the fast lands. Using the red white land isn’t as effective as it deprives the deck of the much needed black mana and is best if replaced by cards like command tower. Keeping everything balanced I would also use 3 utility lands and those only relevant to my commander. Basics will then be used to fill in the remaining slots leaning more towards the heaviest color in your deck adding up to a total of 34-36 lands. If the commander had 4 colors in its cmc, like breya, then I would use the 3 types of dual lands relevant to the heaviest color, in this case blue, and 4 of the dual land types (I.e. shock lands, check lands, fast lands and scry lands) always allowing me to have access to blue above all else. The same rule applies for 5 different colors in a commanders cmc.

I've found a lot of success playing mono colored decks with the basic land ramp package
    Myriad Landscape
    Wayfarer's Bauble
    Burnished Hart
    Solemn Simulacrum
    Extraplanar Lense
    Gauntlet of Power
    Caged Sun
Different colors allow you to run more cards in addition, but the basic point is that you get as many basics into play as you can and double them. It requires you run no more than 2, maybe 3 utility lands, and the rest basic snow lands (for Extraplanar Lense.)
I've found that it completely solves mono white and red's ramp problem, and even makes them better than most green decks at ramping.

If you're running blue, you run Dreamscape Artist
If you're running red, you run Gauntlet of Might
If you're white, you run Knight of the White Orchid, Kor Cartographer, and maybe Boreas Charger if your deck can reliably blink or sac it
If you're black, you run Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast, and Nirkana Revenant
If you're green, you have a lot more options, obviously. There's a myriad of cards that let you search for basic lands or forests and put them into play, enough that you could take out Wayfarer's Bauble, Burnished Hart, and Solemn Simulacrum. The most efficient ones are Nature's Lore, Three Visits, Skyshroud Claim, Kodama's Reach, and Cultivate. You also get access to more mana doublers in Vernal Bloom, Nissa, Who Shakes the World, and Regal Behemoth. If we're talking big, BIG Mana there's Vorenclex, Voice of Hunger, Zendikar Resurgant, and Patron of the Orochi

Before I continue watching this video. I bulit mono red goblins with nothing but base lands cause i have stuff like price of progress and blood moon in my deck. It's just fun to spike them for the none base lands then turn them all to mountain. Without having to worry about taking damage myself. It works great and people hate it.

@Milkshake Of Death don't even got that just all base lands. I don't need anything else. I usually go off with my infinite Mana combo. And just use that for the rest of the game. Also by that time everything is or just about untouchable.

Several things. First: Hello to all. X) Second, Thanks so much on finally making a Vid on how to build a Mono Color Manabase! As a suggestion though, what would make for a good 38 Land/8 Accelerant Colorless Manabase? Tickle me interested; I plan to make a Colorless CMDR Decklist is why... & a Haktos "No 2, 3, or 4 Mana Deck" w/ Voltron/Exalted elements; but no Aura/Equip to back him up. :/ Last, I'm really sorry about what happened elsewhere, I'd like to guess what wrongdoings I did, but I can't remember all of them. I really like your vids here, & your input elsewhere; Maybe I'm not as interested in Hearthstone nor Legends of RUNETERRA as many others are (Just an opinion guys, calm down, please.), but I have to ask, Prof: Since there's no way in Heck there's a chance of unblock, just analyze this for why I like your stuff on twitter; & stuff you liked, or retweeted. Now if you don't mind, this post has gone too long, so I say: Thanks for the memories Prof. Brian Lewis! ^_^ Oh, & Thumbs up for sure. I just ponder about a Colorless Manabase never mentioned though... :/

Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx can be very powerful in a mono deck. Gaea's Cradle and Growing Rites of Itlamoc in any green deck with reasonable numbers of creatures. Maze of Ith is useful, although I possibly wouldn't really count it as a land as it doesn't produce mana. Strip Mine and Wasteland aren't bad includes to take care of problems like Maze of Ith, Glacial Chasm and Gaeas Cradle. Vesuva is similar to Thespian stage only it copies a land when it ETBs rather than it being an ability you have to pay for. If you are running Thespian stage or have ways of messing with counters Darkest Depths is also one to consider.

I would like to add that, if you play something you want to take advantage of right away, a land like Hanweir battlements is pretty good in mono red and you don't ne4ed something like rogue's passage in that deck, so you can add Hanweir battlements instead. I would also argue that having the fetch lands in the deck to thin out your deck is a good thing, so lands like wooded foothills, Arid Mesa, Scalding tarn and Bloodstained mire are fantastic to thin your deck with 3 lands so you draw more gas later on.
As for your mono green, the same rule applies with fetch lands, you will want as many of them as you can get your hands on to thin your deck, also, not every green deck might want 38 lands, I run 29 in my mono green seton deck. this, because almost all my creatures tap for mana thanks to the commander because most of them are druids and some tap for more than 1 mana, so sometimes I will have 2 lands out and have a full board of druids and other creatures, its such great fun. I started off with 32 lands, but I cut 3 because I was flooding alot. only once have I mulliganed to 6 cards at the begining of the game because I had no lands in hand. But Seton, Krosan protector is not your typical green commander. he requires very little in the way of land mana to get going, unless someone agressively removes your mana dorks early game you are good. it's a very fun commander that I would recommend to anyone. once you get to enough mana, you can fetcch large green monsters like Vorinclex, Voice of hunger and craterhoof to finish off the game. you can also use "Gilt-Leaf Archdruid" to tap down 7 druids you control to steal all lands from target player. then you do it all over again the next turn if you have seedborn muse out. this was really fun when paradox engine was legal, you tap 7 druuids, steal someone's untapped land, play something small, untap everything, tap them again to steal the next opponents lands and do it all over again. But since that is banned, we rely on seedborn muse for such shinanegans.
this video was very useful for my mono red Krenko mob boss deck, it will just be very expensive to replace those basic mountains with all this stuff. I'm gonna have alook at your 2 colour commander mana base deck as well as 3, as I play 2 and 3 coloured decks as well. I don't have any 4 or 5 just yet.

Journeyer's Kite is a good one for decks with many instants. If you want to have mana for counterspells or other stuff you want another option if you didn't need to cast that instant. As control deck are usually excell with more and more mana Journeyer's Kite gives your deck more power every time you use it.
Thaumatic Compass is the better option if you just need about seven lands and want some extra protection against creatures.

I think in mono-black there is a strong argument to run a large amount of snow swamps, there are a lot of good control cards and sweepers looking at snow permenants where if you can just unload with your swamps become very powerful.
Another thought towards accelerants is the medallion cycle, they don't generate mana but a 1 colourless reduction on most if not all your spells in a mono coloured deck can easily generate a lot more value while also being harder to turn off.

    • @Putrefax
      @Putrefax 4 года назад

Snow Swamps are pretty much just an arbitrary choice unless you have an Extraplanar Lens. I guess you could run Dead of Winter, but Toxic Deluge is just better most of the time. There are a couple pieces of Snow specific hate that work their way into commander tables i've seen to prey on the snow manabases too. Oh i guess to get a bunch of different land names for Field of the Dead triggers too, that's a good reason for snow.
Unless you've got the Lens, just run the lands if you have them or you like the art.

Most people playing blue will (probably rightfully) skim light on the lands, particularly the Cycling lands, and instead run some of the very efficient 1-2 drop instants to dig for mana drops. Practically the same result in most cases, and better in cases when you aren't short on early mana, since those cards will provide you significantly more value than hitting a land on your draw step later on.

Turns out my 2 commander decks are at the edges of the manabase spectrum:
I have a yuriko deck that uses tempo and many small creatures to use her triggered ability to win the game. Most of those cards cost one colored mana. I will never have to pay commander tax for yuriko as her ninjutsu lets me skip that. I don't even run sol ring in the deck.
The other deck features Richard Garfiel Ph.D as the commander and runs an ungodly amount of mana rocks. Because of his ability I can turn those manarocks into Voltron equipments and swing in for commander lethal with Garfield himself.
Cool video prof, will look into the blue manabase you presented for the Garfield deck.

Mana Rocks worth a slot in (almost) every mono-colored deck - Fellwar Stone, Mind Stone, Fractured Powerstone, Arcane Signet, The Diamond cycle, Coldsteel Heart, Prismatic Lens, Thought Vessel, Star Compass. 2 CMC is the "sweet spot" for rocks. Basalt Monolith, Commander's Sphere, Darksteel Ingot, Thran Dynamo, Gilded Lotus, Caged Sun are some exceptions.

Personally I consider Thespian stage an auto include in every EDH deck I build. Not only does it copy useful utility lands I have but with 3 other players there's a great chance you get to copy a strong land your opponent has.
Also unless you're specifically building a budget deck I always include a strip mine in each deck rather than tectonic edge because it's cheaper to use, online earlier and does hit basics which can be relevant vs the enchantments that sit on basics like underworld connections, chained to the rocks, squirrel nest, all the green ramp/fixing enchantments and so on.

I only need 2 lands to go off and by turn 6 I usually got some one on the ropes and my opponents are scrambling to find answers.
