      Reminds me of the Warhammer 40K character Khaedruakh the Decapitator.
      He was dubbed Khaedruakh the Crappy Spectator, because he must appear on the battlefield in terrain at least 9" away from the closest enemy, he has no ranged weapon and deep strikers can't attack into close combat the turn they arrive. So his spectacular but speculative use is only to spectate. Oh yeah, and the requirement of having to put him into terrain also cuts down his movement range on subsequent turns, if he lives.

  • @zo-zu7158
    @zo-zu7158 4 года назад +153

    The Unspeakable, I feel, was more meant to be played in the deck with Peer through Depths, Reach through mists, and Sift Through Sands. When you play all three spells in one turn (provided Sift is played last) you get to search The Unspeakable and just slam him onto the battlefield. It requires a bit of set up and three cards, but a 6 mana 6/7 Flample at instant speed is a bit better than a 9 mana 6/7 Flample at sorcery speed. Not to mention the three instants all draw cards.

    • @BabyzDevil
      @BabyzDevil 4 года назад +16

      Was looking for this exact comment XD. I honestly don't really think that he's that bad as part of the 99, considering the fact that u have a way to easily cheat him out.
      Side note: Fireminds foresight does tutor all 3 cards out XP.

    • @harrison1735
      @harrison1735 4 года назад +8

      I love the idea behind that combo but they made a huge, huge mistake with it:
      If you accidentally draw The Unspeakable while trying to go off, you can't put it into play from your hand. Library only.

    • @zo-zu7158
      @zo-zu7158 4 года назад +3

      @@harrison1735 while that is the biggest downside, if you happen to have all three in hand you can play them in response to each other and since Sift through Sands cares if you cast the other two then this significantly decreases your chances of drawing The Unspeakable, not to mention Peer through depths only grabs instant/sorcery cards

    • @alexanderforbes1452
      @alexanderforbes1452 4 года назад +5

      The argument's not that The Unspeakable is a bad card just that it's a bad commander, even if you get the three card combo to cheat him out he has to be in your library, so if he's in your command zone it doesn't work. Lets even say it could cast it from the command zone, you can only have one copy of any card in your deck so the chances of drawing the three you need all in one game are slim, imagine the feel bads if you get two right off the bat and then you're holding them up waiting for the third only to never draw it, then you may as well have had a starting hand of five. Lots of commander decks want to win by getting out a three card combo but this doesn't even do that, it just cheats out one big dumb creature who could just be removed and you've been seriously time walked.

    I like the idea of this episode. However any legendary released before like 2010ish is obviously going to fail as a commander for commander format. Legendaries just wernt designed with commander in mind at this point in time. I would have enjoyed this episode more if it was reviewing failed legendaries of more recent sets or better yet legendaries from commander pre-cons. Again I loved the concept of the episode I just felt like it was kind of obvious with older cards being chosen.

    I feel like Isao isn't that bad compared to Anthousa oddly enough.
    1: While both aren't particularly good for their mana cost, if you apply Bushido, then in terms of combat he becomes a 4/3 for 3 versus Anthousa's 4/5 for 5. Albeit Anthousa has a much bulkier body outside combat, hence one doesn't need to worry about stray bolts and the like, but this leads into the second point:
    2: While Isao's regenerate ability is meant to be used for other samurai, he is still a Samurai and I do believe is able to be regenerated via this effect, thus if you have mana to spare your opponent would be wasting their time if they don't have more spells and abilities to deal it damage than you have mana for regeneration.
    3: Isao is unable to be countered, which while I don't know if counterspells are as heavily used in EDH compared to other formats, can still come in handy, and complements his regeneration ability.

    • @ryangainey94
      @ryangainey94 4 года назад

      Oof. Initially I was thinking you could circumnavigate that issue by playing Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and Prismatic Omen... But then I remember it's colorless. And that Wastes are the only legal basic you could use. Using an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and a Quicksilver Fountain can help you drop the cost a little bit but not completely. With all 3 in play the best you can do is a 10 colorless mana 9/9 flyer that you pay 4 additional colorless for each upkeep or it dies. If you're missing one it's a 12 and 6, or 2 for 14 and 8.

      Think about what that actually means. All that needs to resolve for this ability to occur is the cast of the artifact. So let's say your opponent counterspells your artifact. It hits the graveyard, sure. Then, trigger resolves: you tutor it from your graveyard back into play. Essentially: Artifacts you cast can't be countered.

    This particular commander requires a second copy of the card out in play to make use of its ability. It negates the legend rule, however "Partnership" is not mentioned on the card nor was even an idea during Kamigawa. There are almost no copy clones that would make this commander function as the text box states "If there are exactly two permanents named Brothers Yamazaki on the battlefield, the "legend rule" doesn't apply to them". So Mirror March would be a wasted effect beyond the initial coin flip.

    Melek, Izzet Paragon. Neat ability, but as a 6-drop, you're now diluting your deck with artifacts so that you can cast the Weird. And then even more non-instants and sorceries to manipulate the top of your deck. And then you might be burning your opponents. Drawing even more cards where Melek can't help them in your hand. Or taking all the turns. Which works. But is where your playgroup leaves you on the side to deal the necessary turns and damage while they play the rest of the night without you.

    @NezumiLT 4 года назад

    The talk about Isao made me think about Samurai tribal. Kamigawa predates edh (or at least the edh’s explosion in popularity) and because of that cards were designed with different goals in mind. This is most notable in Kentaro who was designed with the idea of playing multicolor samurai decks, but is limited to monoW in commander. Another notable Samurai that would have a different color identity if it were printed today is Konda. He’s the supreme ruler of the lands, the Samurai serve him. Surely he’d be 5 colors, similarly to General Tazri or Kenrith.
    Speaking of 5 color Samurai commanders... I’ve been hoping for a return to Kamigawa for more than a decade, and now I have a new reason for that - I would love an homage to Seven Samurai. A 5 color legendary samurai card that depicts a group of ronin. It could be a mono color card with an activated ability for each member of the group (5 samurai instead of 7, but that still works as an homage), just like Kenrith. But perhaps, each ability could be a combat ability, instead of utility. So, vigilance/lifelink for white, unblockable/removal tax for blue, deathtouch/menace for black, haste/firebreathing for red, reach/trample for green. Just an example, but I think it would be a cool card.

    My pick is Iname as One. It's 12cmc 8/8 whose enters triggers checks to make sure you cast it from your hand, so it doesn't work in commander. Its death trigger, oddly, does work in commander, since you can put it in your command zone and still get the effect, and it's even semi-powerful: Reanimate a spirit. But it's still a death trigger, and a tribe-specific Rise from the Grave as a death trigger on a legend that's not even in the best colors for that tribe (UW) is definitely not worth 12 mana.
