The Powder Mage trilogy deals with a military coup and the aftermath of forming a republic against the will of literal gods. It's pretty cool and powder mages are awesome as hell.

Fun Fact!!!! Anax and Cymede actually do have canon events that explain what happened to them. They're in the obvious place a Magic player should check: A D&D book. I don't remember what happened to Anax but Cymede mysteriously disappeared due to weird magic and no one knows if she's still alive. I believe their daughter is currently ruling Akros but she doesn't have full power since her mom might still be alive so they refuse to make her a full queen

I dunno, Rakdos is owner of probably the largest media conglomerate on Ravnica (House Dimir might be bigger, but they've literally never filed taxes, so it's hard to know), so it would be an uphill battle to exceed his funding with a grassroots movement. He also has the massive recent PR boost of being part of the successful defense of Ravnica from the Eternal horde.

Of all the things i expected from this channel, a jreg crossover was not one of them. Youre both incredible, and youve quickly become my favorite mtg youtuber.
Brandon Sandersob's Mistborn trilogy kinda forms a Republic, although they still get a better king at the same time? There is a lot of "but actually yes but actually no but actually yes" following that due to other plot events coinciding, but by the sequel series they are indeed a republic, albeit with monetarily powerful noble families so in the end it results in a republic.
That was the example I thought of. They try to get a republic, but in the end one of the main characters pulls a napoleon. They do end up with an aristocratic republic eventually, but that happens off screen.

classic star wars when you count future fantasy (they topple the empire and form the new republic)

@@Conqrix not really, the reason why the Elves have a "racial purity thing going on" is because they're pretty close to infertile, they literally have like one child every few decades. Race mixing is hard if you literally can't reproduce, plus they're not very trusting toward humans because they have literally been hiding from a ruler trying to genocide them.

Idk if someone on the comments said it, but on FFXIV, the 2nd expansion revolves around uncovering the secrets of a kingdom that's perpetually on war with a dragon race, and at the end your character kills the king and institutes a democracy akin to that of the UK, with a house of lords and commons.

Books that build republics:
Spoilers: over the course of the Mistborn series an all powerful emperor is replaced by a constitutional monarchy and then in the second series this is replaced by a (I believe) elected council.
The Powder mage series is basically the french revolution but with magic.

I'm sure someone else had answered this already, but the Powder Mage trilogy is an example of a fantasy story that revolves around the overthrow of a monarchy which is followed by attempts to found a republic. The story starts with a palace coup fought with different kinds of magic and gets even better from there.
Seriously check it out of you haven't already.
Squee should be the president, he's a lovely guy who doesn't die so he could keep everything perfect.
Which is the main issue with monarchies as seats of power. You can get that rare incorruptable individual in power and they carry the weight of the kingdom on their shoulders, but once they croak it all falls apart. If you have one of those people who cannot die, then theoretically a monarchy is the most robust government type out there. But that body is only as strong as the brain, and as we can see in our world, it is pretty hard to put a strong brain into that throne.
This video is a masterpiece, especially the shot fired at the US Healthcare system at the very end. Keep up the amazing work!

I know this came out a few months ago, but one novel that deals with overthrowing a monarchy to institute a non-monarch government is the Powdermade Trilogy, by Brian McLellan. Amazing blend of fantasy and warfare!

In case none point this one out (there are nearly 900 comments at this point) : Cymede was made captive by a god (Keranos or Heliod*) in exchange for helping Anax at some point in a fight against Rhodron.
Anax was badly injured but survived. Later he got help from Purphoros, was reforged by him and is on his way to get Cymede back.
*I tryied finding where I learned about Cymede being taken to nyx but I really can't find it.
