Many Magic The gathering players ask the question: is it worth it to buy planechase anthology? Planechase anthology is collection of the now hard to find and oftentimes expensive planechase cards. Within it, players can now obtain every single plane card made for planechase, as well as several nice extras, from planechase decks to card storage accessories.
But is the planechase anthology a second chance at a unique and largely unavailable magic specialty set, or a ham fisted cash grab, let’s take a look.
First, some context. Planechase was released in 2009 as set of 4 supplemental products, each costing 19.99 and containing 1 60 card deck and 10 plane cards. It was released again in 2012, again as 4 supplemental products, each containing a 60 card deck and 10 plane and phenomenon cards.
In addition to this, planechase release events were held each time, at which promo planes were given out, for a total of 6 unique planes over both releases.
Planechase anthology contains the following, all 86 pane and phenomenon cards, the 4 individual planechase decks from planechase 2012, 4 slide deck boxes, one oversized slide deck box, 35 double sided tokens, four spindown life counters, and 1 planar die.
So there’s a lot to unpackage here, no pun intended, because the planechase anthology has gone a lot further than just giving us the 86 plane cards and calling it a day.
If you wanted to collect all 86 plane and phenomenon cards, you’d have quite the arduous task. The prices on the 2012 planechase supplemental products range between 49.99 and 89.99 each, whereas the 2009 editions are so scarce that find even one for sale is rare, and the price can be in the hundreds of dollars.
Individual plane cards can be purchased, often ranging from between $2-5 each, depending on the plane, meaning that for a player today to want to collect all 86 assorted planechase planes and phenomenon cards, cost is exponentially high, and due to the extremely limited availability of the 2009 editions, a complete collection may be near impossible without a combination of ample funds and superior scrounging skills.
This is why a planechase anthology was such a brilliant idea. Following the previous Duel Deck anthology, which took the earliest and hardest to find duel decks, reprinted them in their entirety and offered them for just a bit more than their original MSRP allowed players to gain access to these alternative styles and systems of play, and so for planechase, this was a brilliant ideaaaa...but was it brilliantly executed?. - Игры
2017: 326 Cards for 150 Bucks. Well, that's expensive.
2020: 6 cards for 400 Bucks. What the hell?!
M30: Hold my Red Bull
It's already under MSRP on amazon, you can grab it for around $100-110, which is totally worth it.
It is a collector's item (since you can do the planechase thing with online proxies), but you haven't lived until you've played a commander game with Planechase. It's silly stupid fun.
Nathan Major I have. It lasted 3 hours.
You haven't Lived if you haven't played Commander Planechase Archenemy followed into a Star Duel.
It gets equally hilarious when you through in politics in a 4-6 player free for all.
James Lewis We did a six player game. It lasted five hours and ended in one final explosion of death. Amazing.
80 bucks now. Wow
"It's cardboard. Wow. The future is here." This is the review I came for!
Love the anthology, but everything that you said is 100% bang on.
Should have had the other 4 decks, shouldn't be as expensive, and for the love of God the planer box should be big enough to hold sleeved cards.
For the product to be worth the money. Every deck, Themed sleeves for each deck including the planer deck, and non card deck boxes. The order is of importance too.
+
.
personally i wish they would have taken the planechase unique cards and made new decks with more interesting cards.
All wizards has to do to push planechase... is release new planes alongside Fatpacks/Boosterboxes based on the plane involved in the set. Boom, collectlible and fun alternative for additional products that keeps planechase alive as a fun format and allowing people to build their own planechase deck and not rely on community pool
I played this last night. If you love multiplayer magic formats, or know someone who does, this is a GREAT gift.
Hi professor, I am new to mtg and have found your vids very helpful, thank you
Great to see you in London for the GP!
Thanks again for yet another descriptive and detailed video of some of the WOTC products! I've seen this for £65 now so may jump on that!
Adam
Great content Professor! I was just absolved of ad-block and contributed to a Patreon for the first time...at the same time! I'm not even a current MTG player, but I enjoy the quality of your content and your upbeat attitude! Looking forward to more in the future.
Tolarian, great video as usual! Loved it! Probably going to pick this up to play with my friends :) thanks for the review!
You're getting better and better at this good sir. Really enjoying all your reviews now and I might become a Patron soon :)
We need to bring the planechase cards back.
I played commander with my friends last night and had a blast with augmenting the game these planechase cards.
Hello TCC, I just had an Idea for a Video: I know you Play the boosterbox game once in a while and I enjoy this series. But how about you do a Video in wich you have to unbox Display after Display until you actually complete and entire Collection of the Set that you unbox. For example: You have to Keep unboxing Booster Displays until you have 264/264 Cards. I would love this : )
BishouNoTeresa best idea 11/10
Great video Prof! I always enjoy the content!
Thanks for this video! Might have missed this product otherwise. I like collecting the unique game formats for magic, might pick this one up since I was considering collecting them anyway, this is a much better option.
This was an exceptionally enjoyable video, and it answered every question I had. 10/10
as of now here in austria (europe?), the planechase is available for as much as 70€, which really is awesome value. i bought it for 85€ at my local game store and couldn't be happier, it might be my best investment in magic so far and also the most fun
Nice attire man. I absolutely love how you dress for every video! Subbed!
Thanks for the heads up professor! Got mine at 100$, so B+ for me then.
If anybody is looking for a 4 player "box set" version of MTG but don't like the pricing of this one, Archenemy: Nicol Bolas is coming out next June with an MSRP of $60 for the 4 decks and a twist on the normal Magic gameplay. Might be a better value option.
Kamil Drakari I might be wrong but I think it's going to be 4 different decks featuring Nicol bolas, and each will be $60. Because the previous arch enemy product also launched in sets of 4 different products
"The set contains four 60-card decks (with no new card content), four non-premium planeswalker cards with new art, and a 20-card scheme deck containing 20 all-new, unique schemes. Playable right out of the box without any additions!"
Sounds like a single product of 4 decks to me, and I really can't imagine Wizards selling a $60 product that only contains 1 deck and isn't even playable unless multiple other people also have decks.
Damn.. I just read the page, you're right. Thats alot better than me trying to get all the schemes from pucatade lol.
This brings up the question: Why is it that they can print four 60 card decks and an oversized theme deck for $60 in another product but Planechase Anthology simply MUST be $150 for nearly the same thing?
Probably because they know players want old products so they make them pay an inflated price tag for the "time machine". Typical business as usual =(
Once again...you NAILED IT! I REALLY want the planechase cards, but that's it, none of the other crap. I would have paid $80 or so for just the planechase card...but I'm not paying close to $200 Canadian for it all. I wish you ran Wizards of the Coast.... :)
I think there might be a misprint here for the green deck and purple deck boxes. When I opened my set it was exactly like the Professors, and then I noticed that Savage Auras (the purple one with the purple spine and inner picture of Krond) is actually a green/white deck. Chaos Reigns has a green spine and the inner box picture is of Maelstronm Wanderer, but is more suited to be a purple box due to its multi-colour mana. Hence, I think the colours of the spines of the inner boxes for these decks are misprint and/or would have been better suited if reversed. Of course, none of this effects gameplay - but if you are wanting to sleeve the decks appropriate to their outer deck box colour to reflect their mana-type and matching spin-down die, you may want to swap these two inner boxes with their outer boxes to have Krond's Savage Aura deck which is green/white sleeved in green, and Chaos Reigns which is a multi-mana deck sleeved in purple.
This look really cool, thanks for the review.
i love the music in this video prof! any links to where we can listen to the full songs?
This review is just in time! I was about to buy Planechase Anthology but i wasn't sure...
Got mine for £100 ($125) at my local, the supply here in London seems a bit more limited and I play there a lot so I'm not too fussed about chucking them a few extra quid.
I actually am really glad this product got overprinted because I wouldn't buy it for myself ($150? ouch) but I really would want it as a gift..... so making this readily available is a perfect idea with the Christmas season in mind! I hope this becomes a great gift to players like me who's relatives want to know what we want for Christmas, and when they go to a store they would rather buy a sealed product, not "hey do you have this one single? Oh it's $30? Wow, can't believe my son spends this much on this game.... I'll get him socks." Seriously it would be pretty awkward asking my mom to pick up some singles for me while I'm at school for a tournament next weekend, but she has no problems buying commander precons and the like.
TL;DR: great Christmas gift product, probably not great value-wise, and I think wizards' large print run was motivated by this intention. Great job by wizards, imo. Also THOSE SPINDOWNS ARE SO COOL, I WANT THE UB ONE!
Tolarians back
+Danny Brownlee I never left?
Tolarian Community College I missed you, that's why, to me a day, is a week
Haha, well, it's good to see you again after such a long...day! ;)
Tolarian Community College 😁
lol
Planeschase is my favorite way to enjoy casual free-for-alls, so I'm glad there is at least a semi-affordable way for people to experience this wonderful format.
Recently purchased Planescape anthologies. Dont worry professor. It's not just the one component I am after. I want the decks too (and dice, i love dice). Unfortunately Wizards didn't include "how to play the decks" unlike with other products like duel decks and planeswalker decks. I googled and failed to get any relevant info.
I do hope you can pickup the topic and explain how to properly play these decks. My intention for the product is to call my old MTG friends and play. With this set, they dont need to bring/have cards. We'll just use those deck. With or without the planechase mechanics. Although the Ethernities map variant sounds amazing.
Omg I'm so thankful. Blessed
I got this on clearance for 85$
And no way was I gonna pass it up. Had the Krond deck originally he's still my favorite commander
Got mine for $110 at my LGS (Black Friday Sale). I thought it was a great deal and can't wait to have my sister and cousins over to play at Christmas.
Great video!
my local game store NEVER lowers the price on retail items like this unless they have been on the shelf for a LONG time but are very quick to INCREASE the price if they think they can get more (they did that with Commander 2013, selling the UBR version barely a week after release for $49.99 thinking it was worth the higher price).
I got my copy for $130 and while still considered high, I made mine before it's release, a pre-order as I wasn't sure how fast this product was going to be sold out, or how WOTC was going to handle the supply. There have been times when their products have had horribly low supply and printing runs, that it becomes hard to get the product without paying MORE than the MSRP for it. I remember a year or two ago I was actually considering buying a couple of the 2012 Planechase decks because I loved the plane cards, the decks and unique cards that came with them and while...yeah I could have bought singles and whatnot, I tend to like to buy these pre-constructed products new and sealed. And pretty much getting these new was a hassle, about $100-130 for one Planechase set and most places only having 1-2 copies to sell. So I ended up not getting any, then seeing the Anthology of them being offered piqued my interest tenfold.
So, I figured $20 cheaper, free shipping and that I'm guaranteed to get my copy was good enough to me. Sometimes playing it safe pays off and then there are times when waiting can cost you more. Perhaps I didbn't get the highest payoff compared to some however, I'm happy for people who can get it even for lower but I'm not going to lose sleep over missed saving an extra $10-30 off a product I got lower than MSRP off the bat. What each individual values something is VERY subjective, to some they only see the monetary value of a product or a peice of a product, to others a fantastic game or a revival/reprint of something that is tough to get. Eventually there wont' be anymore Planechase Anthology sets to buy and so it ends up being a matter to each person themselves, on what they'd value to wait till the product is the cheapest and possibly supply dipping lower and lower, or knowing what is a price they'd be comfortable to secure a copy.
Cheers all.
Hey Prof.
great video!! like always, great quality!
but i need the song/tune you have playing in the bakgrund 1/4:th in to the video.
the tune that sound like a 16bit game intro/outro. that really struck a note in me
"Airship Serenity" by Macleod.
Tolarian Community College Thanks a bunch ^^
Never heard it before ( to my knowledge)
but it makes me feel nostalgic :)
Just played it a few hours ago. Pretty good IMO, the decks were pretty fun and Planechase cards are great just for Commander alone.
I feel like its worth mentioning, for those who don't care about owning the physical planes but want to play planeschase, you can download an app for free on android (maybe apple too, i dont know) that contains every plane card and a pretty good interface for playing.
The 2012 Edition is now for sale for just $50 at my local game store. Should I buy it?
Will you be doing a video about the Kaladesh Gift Box, or would you say it's about the same as the Shadows over Innistrad Gift Box? I can't find Kaladesh ones for anywhere near as cheap as the SoI ones were or still are, and the $27 I'm finding them for seems much too steep.
You mention an oversized deck box for the plane cards (and Archenemy Schemes). I have been unable to find one, do you have a link to it?
This looks cool, I was thinking of getting this as a stand alone set, just to bust out with friends, casually, no upgrading or pulling apart the decks. That price tag though, ouch.
Luckily prices are a little bit cheaper in Europe, they had fallen below 100€ several weeks before release ^^
I was determined to buy and play it with my play group since it was announced, no matter the cost :D I think it really helps understanding the connections of all those places named in so many flavor texts and the home planes of so many personalities beyond the common storylines.
So glad I picked up all of them when they each came out.
The iPhone app life counter for mtg offers a planechase mode where it has the various planes and their abilities and you can do the rolling and swap planes for free all while keeping the life total for everyone in a quality commander planechase game
Killin' it Professor!
6 inutes after video was posted, maybe I will be noticed! Keep up the great work professor! Which four colo commander from 2016 was your favorite??
I'd say Breya was my favorite.
Hey professor do you know the name of the oversized sleeves for the planes I really want to sleeve mine lol
If you're looking to store your sleeved Plane cards, my friend uses his From The Vault Realms box.
I happened to get this for 115 so thankfully I was able to get it! I was hoping to get it, but wasn't going to pay 150. Sooooooooo happy I can finally enjoy Planechase!
Saw Rudy's apology dang this product looks interesting
Just found this at a not so local game store for only $100. I couldn't say no, compared to its original msrp and how much it currently goes for online. A total steal!
I like your videos as an LGS owner :). the only thing keeping this product above 5$ from cost is its weight the online sellers need to ship it for 10-15$. btw the cost is 75$ at least and 80$ at average. Volume sellers online always undercut the product and I feel like most of your conclusions will come to that.
I can agree that $150 is a bit too steep a price for this, but I'd have paid it anyway because, at my LGS at least, we play a decent amount of Commander games, and every once in a while we like to really spice it up by making it Planechase Commander, and it'd be nice to have the physical cards rather than have to roll percentiles, rerolling anything above 86, and trying to keep track of where we'd been already.
fortunately, my LGS is selling it for $120, which isn't much better but still nice, and I had a bunch of store credit saved up so it's almost like I didn't have to spend real money for it.
Guess I'll just proxy the planes...
There is a free app on Google play that has them all if youd prefer that way.
JakobLogan Huh, cool. I wasn't really planning on proxying but this is definitely something I could consider.
Linkaru Yeah, I actually own 48 plane cards in physical form, but it's nice to have access to all of them from time to time :)
What does Proxy mean? I'm new to the game.
Jeremiah Bachmann Proxies are fake cards. Often printed out copies, of course only used in casual play with friends.
I want to know where you got that hedron and the stuffed siege rhino from. Also is that skull the head of tuck tuck
Thanks for your informations, I have the box, unopened. I was wondering if you could sleeve the cards and still keep them in the cardboard boxes (the future is here), Because I want other ways to play magic rather to have to spend a lot on other cards.... Thank you again.
I payed full MSRP for this product shortly after launch. I didn't have to, and probably shouldn't have, but I did it by choice. When this was announced I had no idea the availability would be so high. I asked my FLGS owner to save me a copy and promised I'd buy. It feels bad seeing this product on massdrop months later for literally half MSRP, but it feels good to help out my local game store. They also reserved and sold me FTV: Lore at MSRP, and have continually had excellent prize support at prereleases (prizes for the top 16 in a 22 player event). All in all they have been wonderful and well worth the extra $75 I paid for Planechase anthology. I even got a buy-a box booster when I got it cause the owner knew I could have gone elsewhere. Pulled an Newmrakul and Spider-lord!
Shout out to Turtle Gaming in Goose Creek SC, you guys are great!
I got this on release day for around MSRP (In Australia, so MSRP isn't really a thing anyway), and I don't regret it.
As with most people, I only got this for the planes because I'm a commander player, and a 5-man Planechase commander game is so much fun. I know I'll get my money's worth out of this for sure.
Managed to get one of these myself recently for £60, however it was a freak occurance, and i've seen this go for £100+, so technically it has maintained value.
However, i have to ask, what sleeves do you use for the planechase cards, looking to sleeve all 86 before i start using them
Those Plane arts are amazing!
that ninja deck, everything is so beautiful in it, I actually cry.
You can find oversized sleeves? I've looked everywhere for those kind of sleeves. Where are they?
In Potugal the price of Planechase Anthology is 100€ in any store, just like the Duel Decks Anthology :)
Does anyone know the name of the song that plays from 2:55 to 3:20? I don't think it's from Kevin MacLeod.
Professor where does me getting mine for $75 put it on the scale? And I'll add that everything you said made complete sense, especially where how much it would cost to get the Planes in their original printing. As a side note if you or another person reading this and wondering what wizardry I pulled to do this the LGS I go to has an rewards program.
what about brindle shoat?that card came in planechase 2012, its a common and costs over 5 bucks a piece
I found a good deal on Planechase decks on TCGplayer so I felt like giving it a shot with my monday night magic group and it really spicesvup the game.
> exponentially high
I think saying "much higher" is more appropriate, exponential has a specific meaning
This reprint does have a random upside: I was able to buy a full set of the planar cards + the planar die for 38,50. That's a lot better than buying them individually and also far less work
Professor, are you going to do a video on the planechase eternities map variant anytime soon? My decision to buy planechase depends on how good that variant is. The normal way and the single deck variant seem too random and too chaotic.
Just picked this up from my LGS, four years after release, for $109.99+tax. Totally worth it considering most places online are selling it around $160-$200. I've been waffling on picking this up for the past almost year, and nobody else grabbed it. I had to pull the trigger.
Picked it up Yesterday, if you never had the chance to play Planechase format, I would highly recommend picking it up, IF you can afford it. It added a lot of fun extras you don't get everyday in MTG.
How do you think, will Commander Anthology repeat destiny of Planechase Anthology, being sold in stores much cheaper than MSRP?
If I were to buy some of these with the intent to horde them in hopes of them becoming valuable, would this be a good or bad idea?
Thanks.
What are the options for over-sized sleeves. I've found KMC ones, but I'm not sure if they'd fit Planechase cards. Are the ultrapro over-sized sleeves the only option?
Never mind about the KMC, I just learned what the size is, it's designed for triple sleeving. Still I'd like to know if there are there other options then Ultra Pro for sleeving Planar cards.
I paid just under 110 for my box, and will only really be using the planes for commander, but will keep the theme decks together for when people want to casually play.
What's my grade?
Under 110? B+ Under 99? A
What is the song that starts playing at 2:49
Good thing you can get these pretty easily for $115 Shipped on ebay. Wonderful deal to get some fun games of EDH in with the planechase cards.
I asked and got this for Christmas, I am very excited because I will be playing this at the kitchen table magic I play. do you think with the minimum play in get with it. do you think it will be worth something in the future?
tbh I do get boarded with magic, but you keep me interested. is this community college a really thing or just what you call yourself? please help, I do appreciate it.
Always wanted to try planechase, however the cost of both modern and edh/commander takes up my mtg budget excluding prerelease/sealed. I'd love to own this though.
I miss this format so much!!!
After I sleeve the decks, there is no where to store the tokens. There isn't enough room in the boxes for sleeved decks and tokens. What the heck?
Card boxes with matching sleeve art for all decks, sleeves for the planes, and the plastic tray sized to fit it all would have made me happy to buy it. I scratch my head every time they release premium priced products you'll want to treasure, but packaged as if sleeves don't exist.
80 bucks on Amazon doesn't seem too bad now the complete planechase card set can be used in any format just about combine that with paying basically 15 bucks per deck and 20 for the planechase set I think its worth it
I'm interested in planechase just not $120 interested in Planechase. Hoping for an Archenemy Anthology sometime.
I got it for £100 today (which is like $110) and I'm really pleased with it. Planechase is my favorite way to play so to have all the plane cards is awesome plus the decks are cool and I actually really like the boxes. The dice are cool as well.Personally I'd give it a A
My friends just printed out the pictures of the Planes cards and laminated them and we use those for commander. That's all you need for playing casually. Unless you're a collector and really like this stuff, I don't see any point in paying money for this, especially that much. If they sold just the Planes cards for around $25, then I'd say it's pretty fair.
I can get all these planes, phenomenons and promos for ~€ 70 (new, including a die). Would you say that's worth it? It looks like a lot of fun to me and I'm kind of looking forward to introducing my Magic group to this (if I buy it).
@tolariancommunitycollege There's an app that has the planar cards and phenomenon as well as an app for archenemy they're a cool fits in your pocket version BUT I have the planechase anthology and am super happy with it, it's inspired me for a few different decks as well as my friend buying the Chaos Reigns and modifying it and making more wacky
Professor, Professor!
What are the best sleeves for the Planechase cards?
The only real sleeves are the Ultra Pro oversized sleeves: www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Oversized-Protectors-82420/dp/B003K5TMJW/ref=s9_simh_gw_g21_i1_r?_encoding=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=0M5KR1J6Y0SJYR3KDNT0&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=6aad23bd-3035-4a40-b691-0eefb1a18396&pf_rd_i=desktop They are not great, but they get the job done.
Thats a bit of a disppointment
Yeah, but again, they do a fine enough job. Grade wise, we're talking C/C+. They're okay.
Tolarian Community College true enough
What about Ultimate Guard Supreme Sleeves Oversized Black (40) Card Standard? The shipping is outrageous on Amazon so I'm hoping my LGS can order them for me. Another option would be the top loading ones from Ultra Pro that have the MTG logo on the back, carried by Amazon and many others.
www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01CS0ZAU4/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1480252599&sr=8-8&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=oversized+magic+card+sleeve&dpPl=1&dpID=41UwECT7opL&ref=plSrch
Thanks
Couldn't agree more. I was interested in playing the format, but I only want the plane cards. At that price, I'm not touching it with a barge pole.
May of 2018, $80 new on Ebay, just the planes is around $60.
A local shop bought way to many and recently marked them down to $50. I call that a steal :)
Oof, I was worried this was going to be heavily limited again and jumped on at $130 just to not miss out on getting a copy (since I missed the original releases). I really wish WotC would be more forthcoming on just how much of each of these more limited products is going to be available to prevent "stress buys" at a higher than might otherwise be necessary price. Obviously $130 is still below MSRP, and well below previous secondary market value, but it's never a good time hearing you wasted potentially $30.
I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the Duel Deck Anthology. It's great for a quick pick-up game. The cardboard boxes do look better here, but I'll take a pass on this product. The Planechase format always felt a lot more random that strategic to me anyway. Thanks, as always, for the review, Professor!
"Wow, the future is here" >.
Ottawa3453 he was being sarcastic.
Yeah I think that was pretty obvious.
I bought one for 115, but I was planning on giving it as a gift this Christmas to a close friend. he is more of a collector. good idea? I split the cost with friends so we can give it as a group gift so I only payed about 30
Down to $90 on Amazon now. Just pulled the trigger.
