An introduction to Archenemy.
A multiplayer format variant for Magic: The Gathering
What is Archenemy?
Archenemy is a one vs many multi player format. In it, one player is the Archenemy, essentially the villain, who the other players must all team up against.
Each player has his or her own deck, as does the archenemy. But the archenemy player gets some added advantages, since they are battling against the rest of the group for survival.
The key difference is that the archenemy gets a second deck, known as their scheme deck, from which they can set scheme cards in motion. Scheme cards are special bonus cards that interact with the archenemies deck to make them a force that requires the teamwork and cooperation of all the other players.
Can the other players team up, unite, to stop you, the archenemy from eliminating them all?
ArchEnemy is a lot of fun! It’s main is going to be to more casual players, players who enjoy multiplayer games, and although it was not intended as such, archenemy is of special interest to commander players.
In fact, Commander is probably the format Archenemy is most widely played in. It’s a great way to mix things up for your playgroup, relax, and have fun ganging up with everyone against one player.
But taking out the archenemy isn’t as easy as it sounds, because scheme cards aren’t the only thing they have at their disposal .

+Soetpotatis That's why we mix EDH and archenemy when my GF wants to play her Oloro deck. More fun for everyone, and she loves being the archenemy :D ...and losing to oloro is better when you lose as a team...

Archenemy seems like a D&D campaign in TCG form.

+Strato Incendus Commander Archenemy Planechase is lame. I say go BIG or go home. Two Headed Giant Commander Archenemy Planechase Emperor. I actually worked out the rules for this a few years ago.
+MrZBKMan I'm with you on that, but how do you merge emperor and archenemy into one format? THG is clear, six vs two players (if you find a group of eight that is tired of drafting ^^), so with emperor you'd have to do nine vs. three? XD Even at our local game store we rarely have that many players gathered at the same time.
so Each normal emperor player is represented by a 2hg team meaning the emperor is a 2hg team, the left guard is a 2hg team and the right guard is a 2hg team. So the Archenemy group is 6 players divided into 3 sets of 2 players with emperor rules. Then each normal player battling the Archenemy has the same rules except they can only attack the Archenemy team. Example: a normal 1v3 game becomes a 6v18 game.
+MrZBKMan Sounds like something you can only do at a Grand Prix ^^ . But epic for sure if you can get it to work.
How about 1 Archenemy versus everyone at once in commander and planechase. The Archenemy starts off with 10,000 life and everyone else start at 40 life. Have fun with that.

I still dont get how this works. You shuffle the scheme-deck, right? When it comes to the turn you reveal the top card and resolve its effects. Then you put the card on the bottom of the scheme-deck, right? And then it goes on like this and when every card from the scheme-deck has been played you play it again the very same order?

My friends and I play Archenemy and Planeschase every now and then. Sometimes when we feel extra frisky, we do both.

I am personally not a commander fan. I don't dislike the format, I just enjoy using the slimmer decks. xD Size doesn't matter.

Here' an idea. Two-Headed Arch-Enemy Commander.

The Arch-Enemies play in the Two-Headed Giant Commander format. 60 health, shared health pool, they count as one opponent but two players.
What about Two-Headed Arch-Enemy Planechase Commander. And every player can have one Conspiracy card...

Doubt thatd work well as I have taken down six opponent's by myself in commander archenemy. They conceded by turn 4. God pharoah can really do a number when brought out T1 with perhaps youve met my cohort
You should do a review of the Horde format. If you're unaware of Horde magic, basically the players are against an automated deck filled with token creatures and bomb style enchantments, artifacts, sorceries, and creatures. Our play group loves the format. It was based off the idea of a zombie horde attacking the players, but we all just chose a tribe and built our decks with that. Our favorite tribal builds are our squirrel and our myr horde decks!

I love hoard. I have a zombie horde, and I'm working on building an angel/soldier "holy army" horde, and possibly a Sliver Horde. I'm just trying to tweak them before I fork out the money for tokens and cards so that the decks are challenging without being the same as my zombie horde.
I've also been contemplating a Mardu Horde...horde?

Archenemy was a blast and my friends and I all purchased one when they originally came out. Many a nights were spent playing that.

They should really make it draftable. It goes like this: You draft in pods of 8. You split into two groups of four. Packs are normal but there are two schemes inside of each, one instead of the land and the other is an addition. Each group of four keeps the schemes in their packs while drafting. An Archenemy is chosen for each group. and then you play in multiplayer with your group, as or against the archenemy. Maybe some conspiracy mechanics can be added like Draft Matters or Will of the Council to make it more interactible. This sounds like LOTS of fun to anyone else? Thumbs up if you like.

This reminds me of those challenge decks. I feel this is what makes magic fun even to solitaire against yourself. Just all sorts of ideas. Wish expensive cards became affordable but whatever, I guess a dual or evolving wilds/lay of the land type search can cover for fetchlands (I only have 1 myself)
i would love to see wizards put out some more archenemy decks
oh goodness these formats are so fun. 4 way free-for-all, planechase, even 2 headed giant are the things that got me playing magic again.

Great timing on this video. I'm in the process of making a custom archenemy format for my RTR themed cube. Making custom Schemes for two different ways to play. Hoping to get them all printed when I'm done to make it easy to play.
I remember on april fools of this year, the SCG youtube channel released a commander game where they mixed commander, vanguard, and planechase. they also mixed some unhinged and unglued cards into their decks. one of the funniest things that i have ever watched in that series of videos.

This is still my favorite way to play Magic. Admittedly, I find the format kind of stale. We need more scheme cards. We need more variation in the format. I feel like there's so much more room for experimentation and evolution in this format. Now, the scheme cards are all expensive too since they've been out of print. Really hope we see more support for Archenemy!
The ultimate test of formats Archenemy, Vanguard, Commander, Planechase.
Maybe mix in Tribal Wars and Kings and Knights for even more rules and craziness. And if you are feeling super evil play for ante! ( if it is legal in your state please do not get arrested)
I was about to run an Archenemy Event in my Store (all the way to Perú) and this video was really helpfull to show my players the basic rules.

I bought Assemble the Doomsday Machine right when Arch Enemy came out. I picked it solely based on the name, because the band Arch Enemy had an album called Doomsday Machine. I even bought a one of those double-wide faux leather deck boxes last year because it has an oversize card compartment that can hold schemes, and have recently overhauled the original deck into a real mean bastard of a deck. I don't play Arch Enemy often, but it holds a special place in my heart. It's such a fun format!

I felt they were distinct enough to need separate reviews.Yes, people do often combine the two (and I'll talk about that) but I want separate "threads" as it were for Planechase and Archenemy.

Unglued-Unhinged Archemeny is beyond fun and absolutely hysterical. We got the guy stuck speaking in Pig Latin for half an hour.
Actually, worth noting, this is my favorite ensemble so far. Very classy.

I got all of these years ago when they first came out. I haven't had a play group willing to play with them since, but I'm always ready to bust out my customized archenemy deck whenever I'm playing Nicol Bolas.
I have never heard of this format in the past. It seems like it could be really fun to play, going to have to look into picking one up.

I recently got a 20 card archenemy oversized deck from fixing a friends computer, and have been working on building a Planechase deck from singles on amazon (so far I have 13 and the die from that one) to give my playgroup a few different varients to keep things fresh.
I'd love to see and Archenemy Eldrazi deck some day...
Thanks for the video. I did not even know that this sort of product existed. This would be perfect for my to play with against a group of my students, since they always are wanting to play against me at the same time. Unfortunately, all of the archenemy sets are so expensive.
I think it's a great idea requiring teamwork as opposed to free for all tactics more archenemy cards would be a great way to expand the alternate format

ARCHENEMY!!! I love archenemy. A few months into my Magic career, I was playing multiplayer games regularly with other players on my college campus. Everyone was a new or returning player. Everything we did was casual. And I wanted to build a dragon deck at the time. Lo and behold, I found a preconstructed dragon deck with things for our multiplayer group at Walmart. The deck has since been modified slightly over the years, and now that I am off campus the schemes get played less. But what a blast! The first time I lost it was 1v6! (I nicknamed them the Avengers.) I would love to see more. I like having the preconstructed decks to give an idea of where to go, but the main thing they need is more schemes. Next round of archenemy should allow for greater customization of the scheme deck. And now I will have to try archenemy commander. We got into commander at t he end of my college career so my play group disbanded shortly after we all got commander decks.

this is exactly the kind of product I need. I have a friend who gets mad when he loses and doesnt understand that magic is a game, we can't go to my local game store because he hates playing with anyone but myself. I need to see if I can get my hands on one of these.

I love Archenemy so much! Its really fun to build a theme deck and play it against a group and getting into character is the best part! To bad nobody ever wants to play in my group. They say its 'unfair' even though I lose most of the time.

Could this become a special pack, like Conspiracy? Having packs with new cards for the format? I think that this world be interesting to try out with a deck of "free spells" due to the fact only one set was released, and those spells effect all players. What do you all think?

I definitely enjoy Archenemy format, and love playing the Archenemy. I have a deck built specifically for this format that tries to hold off my opponents for as long as possible while I allow the Arch-deck to tilt the game in my favor. (It doesn't always work out that way, however, as some cards from the Archenemy special deck have preconditions which may not exist on the table at that moment.) Still, it's a fun format, even for newer players, as they play alongside more experienced players as their 'teammates.'
EDH/Commander-Archenemy and EDH/Commander-planechase are two great casual multiplayer format
This makes me want to pair my Horde deck with Archenemy. It would be awesome. (my horde is Allies, runs like the minotaur hoard but with all the rally effects, and a few wipe spells to keep it fair), as I could be the Archenemy behind the hoard haha.
I played this a couple times. It was neat. I liked it far better than Planechase or whatever that was called. I wish WotC had expanded more on this, rather than just cranking out some Commander heap to clog up shelves everywhere I go. I recall Archenemy getting snapped up pretty quick when it came out.
I seem to recall coming across a random scheme generator site online a few months back that would allow you to just randomly generate a scheme effect each turn. If its too difficult for some play groups to obtain arch enemy cards, they could use sites like that to artificially generate a scheme deck.
My playgroup has adopted both Archenemy and Planechase. We mostly play EDH and it adds a lot of fun variants, though some cards are really broken. I run 2 copies of "Perhaps you've met my cohort' and it can win the game if it comes up on the first couple of turns, as it just lets you have a card like Karn, or Bolas immediately. Karn specifically just wins the game if its early. As far as planechase though, we tend to not follow the exact prescribed rules, but instead make an edh style singleton deck of all the planes we have, so the game can be wildly varied and doesnt really benefit one player over another

In Pauper you can look up cardlists for the scheme cards and pick out 20 cards then roll a D20.

This has peaked my interest. I enjoy being evil, that's probably why I play black so much, and schemes could be a fun addition to crushing all opposition.
What kind of sleeves you are using to protect your scheme cards? Or have you made a video about whats best sleeve for oversized cards? :)
When I play edh archenemy it's usually that the puny interlopers are still at 40 life each but the archenemy starts at 80 life. My favorite archenemy to use is Purphoros, God of the Forge. A scheme deck has a minimum of 20 cards and can contain up to 2 copies of a given scheme. So in the Purphoros archenemy deck my schemes are all centered around putting more creatures in play to trigger Purphoros, and then increasing those effects via "Plots That Span Centuries" along with the second archenemy release card that's Ongoing that you can abandon to copy the next non-Ongoing scheme of your choice. Which is evil to do when you copy Plots that Span Centuries and so you net a minimum of 5 schemes in a turn... Which is pure evil of course. Muahahahaha!
Funny thing though. A puny human rules-lawyered me and figured out how to stop all my schemes going off. Apparently schemes are a trigger that occur at the start of my main phase. The guy stuck a Stifle on an Isochron Scepter... None of my schemes resolved for the rest of that game and I was defeated that time. I admire the clever workaround though it frustrated me at the time
You know what sounds fun right now? 3 Ally decks against an Eldrazi deck in Archenemy.
