The Southern Cross star constellation, of five stars, is on the flags of the countries of Australia and New Zealand that are in the Southern Hemisphere. I live 'down under' and see this constellation every night. It's beautiful just like the wonderful harmonies of Crosby, Stills and Nash! They are stars of a different kind!
The Southern Cross is a constellation that can only be seen in the southern hemisphere. The song is about a guy who lost his love and ran away on a sailboat. The terms he uses,a following sea,off the wind on this heading,making for the trades,nicely making way,,those are nautical terms and phrases.
While sailing,you have a lot of time to think! "On a midnight watch I realized,why twice you ran away". Midnight watch would be you at the helm,steering the ship,and thinking! Mostly about your past,and love that you lost.
When you see the Southern Cross for the first time, you understand now why you came this way... I was fortunate to see the Southern Cross as an officer in the Navy back in 1979, a time that has shaped my life for decades. One of my favorite CSN songs.

You have experienced musical and lyrical harmony that has its roots in the 1960's. Look up the Byrds, the Hollies, and the Buffalo Springfield to hear where these masters came from, and be humbled.
There’s a whole bunch more of their music to love but it would be fun to explode their origins in The Byrds, The Hollies, and Buffalo Springfield.
Urban legend (possible album credits) have Art Garfunkle and Timothy B. Schmidt (Eagles/Jimmy Buffett) also singing background. David Crosby was in rehab and just appears in the video.
Southern Cross is a star formation (like the Big Dipper) that is more prominent in the Southern Hemisphere. Lots of sailing terms in this one… about him running off to sea after a break up.
Just a terrific song. Beautiful harmonies. So many good songs with these 3. I prefer these 3, I don't think they sound as good when Neil Young was part of the group.

The Southern Cross is a constellation visible in the southern hemisphere. CSN and CSNY have many awesome songs. For a more hard hitting song, try CSNY Ohio. The song recounts the death of four college students at the hands of the National Guard trying to silence anti-war (Vietnam War specifically) protestors at Kent State University (in Ohio).

You cut the song short from it's ending! Go back and properly finish the song. The Southern Cross is a constellation of stars only visible in the southern hemisphere.
