It can actually be seen north of the equator. You can see it from southern Florida and southern Texas at certain times of the year, and can see it even more readily from countries farther south of 27*N. I've seen it from Key West.

Stills took an existing song melody "Seven League Boots", written by Michael and Richard Curtis, and re-wrote most of the lyrics with the Curtis brothers. Noah is correct that it is about Stills experience sailing after his divorce to help him get over it. Whether or not he wrote the original melody, Stills clearly made it his own and it remains one of my favorite CSN songs.

Noah Holliday - It is an interesting comparison. IMO, Stills took a piece of unremarkable coal and made it a diamond. I just searched it and found a blog about it, that has a link to the song. Look it up on blog.discmakers.com. I haven't read the article, yet, but little that I saw gave me a lot more background than I knew. Okay, I have to ask..., where are you from? "Give it a go..." I lived in Australia for high school, and that is how I talked after 4 years in Sydney! Cheers!

My Navy years presented the Southern Cross to me. In the beautiful black of a Pacific night aboard the USS Port Royal (CG-73), this constellation stuck out most prominently and always presented itself first. It's easy to see why Australia adopted it to represent on their flag. I can say that I grew up listening to this tune on the radio and always loved it. However, when I did see the Southern Cross for the first time...this song now provides a deeper meaning for the rest of my life. This sight should be on evry bucket list.

There’s lots of cutting to fit in allotted air time there.

Myself (a guitarist then bassist), my drummer, a lead vocalist friend in a different band, and a guitarist friend, we would sing AIC songs, Simon and Garfunkel, but we always were challenged by CSNY the absolute most of any band, but when we actually did hit it properly, it was like climbing a mountain: out of breath but on top of the world!
The humorous part is that the metal band the drummer and I were in, the two guys with eight years of choir training didn't sing at all. I did a Cronos (Venom) meets early Mustaine (Megadeth) lead vocal on one song, and backing vocals on a few, with two semesters of music theory with a vocal performance component, and our primary vocalist with ZERO vocal/singing training, aside from growing up with an occasional musician as his father. What CSNY did at Woodstock was goosebump inspiring!

Check out “LONG TIME GONE” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young if you want to hear some harmonies.
Also, that song is just as relevant now as is was when it was written as a reaction to the murders of MLK and RFK.
David Crosby wrote and sang lead on it.
They all took turns on lead vocals, depending on who wrote the song, that was one of greatest strengths of that group.
Four master songwriters, musicians and vocalists combining to make some extraordinary music that has stood the test of time.

I read that Stephen Stills boat was named the Southern Cross and he had become a man of the seas and sailed Around the world in the Southern Cross , of course named after the constellation .

Harmonizing is what they're known for.
Definitely go listen to Suite: Judy Blue Eyes for more of it. Preferably the Woodstock version. :)

The Southern Cross is a constellation in the southern hemisphere. Beautiful and iconic like the Big Dipper.

The cross itself is the 4 outer points of the constellation.
There is a marker carved out of the granite in alignment at Machu Picchu and other Peruvian ancient site.
Stephen Stills is a genius musician who can play everything but drums
Man you are in for a treat for other CSN harmonies

Hey Jamel. "Those harmonies!!!" ALL of CSN songs are meant to be sung to. Their harmonies have the ability to cancel out our "off-key" voices.
"Our House" and "Teach Your Children" will have you singing at the top of your lungs every time!! (cats and dogs...BEWARE).
Later on, when Neil Young joined, they were known as Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young... CSN&Y (special note to Jamel: (Rabbit hole warning)

    Vale - David Crosby
One of the best & greatest Singer/Musicians has passed away aged 81.
Along with his mates Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young, Crosby created some of the most iconic late 60's & early 70's music.
I know they started in the mid-60's, though to me they epitomise WOODSTOCK.
The Vocal harmonies rival anyone else in the music world.
Their Guitar work and their sublime Bass lines were ground-breaking and ahead of their time.
Even as a very young child I knew their music was very special.
RIP Mate, thanks for all the musical joy you brought us.

This is my very favorite CSN song. When my daughter was a preemie in the NICU 15 years ago, this song was my go to comfort...I played it over and over, it helped me to stay strong for my 2lb baby. This song is church. I LOVE CSN, and this song is my fav. Great choice.

One of my all time favorite tunes! It’s too bad that this music video left out the last verse. This version is missing about a minute of the song. Ugh. That verse is like the icing on the cake.
Not many know, but David Crosby did not sing on the studio version of this song. It was Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Timothy B. Schmit, and Art Garfunkel. Beautiful harmonies.

Karaoke? Ahh yes, I tried that once way back when I had more friends then I could count and I was considered the life of the party, after that night my friends disowned me, my dog turned himself into the pound, my daughter took her mother's maiden name and my parents moved away without a forwarding address. I'll have to try that again sometime.
