These guys produced some of the most beautiful harmonies ever and then, when Neil Young was added to the equation, it became absolutely heavenly! Great pick Harri. 🌺✌️
13 yo me randomly sings (my age when this song came out), “Think about how many times I have fallen. Spirits are using me, larger voices callin’. What heaven brought you and me, cannot be forgotten.” RIP David Crosby
Ah, Harri, you've done it again, caught me with my feels shield down, you spin an old vinyl, and *poof* I am transported to other places. Yes, the guy is on a boat and sailing south. The first verse is almost solely about sailing the boat and hitting a port to try to call her. There is a feeling of resigned sadness, but he is moving his life along. His love is an anchor tied to her by a silver chain, but what a fragile tether that would be, and leads me to believe that he held on too tightly and she needed to have more freedom. The Southern Cross is a constellation that can be viewed in the Southern Hemisphere. To my mind, he understands that no matter how much residual love they may have for each other, it is unlikely to flower into a functioning relationship. Verse three wraps the song up; "So we cheated and we lied and we tested And we never failed to fail It was the easiest thing to do You will survive being bested Somebody fine Will come along, make me forget about loving you In the Southern Cross" Hopeful, still ready to try for love again. The vocals, well dang, it's David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash, The trifecta of voices over the years. (I adore Neil Young both with them and alone.) These three voices have been part of my life forever, and that has been more than a minute, lol! Beautiful song, and watching the joy break over your face makes me smile!
I couldn't have said it better and I'm a pretty good sayer of things and feelings. So thank you, Wendy, for your lovely comment. Been lovin' this jam since 82.
The Southern Cross , a constellation used to navigate in the Southern Hemisphere , like Polaris in the Northern Hemisphere … 80’ of a waterline from their sailboat ! The video is awesome too
Marty it is the constellation. It's in a form of a cross. Sailors used this constellation to determine south. The North Star directed them North. Of course sunrise leads them East band sunset West.
@@martyjansing2675 Sorry, Marty - that's incorrect. Crux is a constellation of the southern sky that is centred on four bright stars in a cross-shaped asterism commonly known as the Southern Cross. It lies on the southern end of the Milky Way's visible band. The name Crux is Latin for cross. Wikipedia

Steven Stills is famous for being an ocean sailor. His ~86 foot boat (80' at the waterline) was christened "Music". I saw a picture of it once somewhere.
Their harmonies lift me up to Heaven! My parents listened to CSN&Y when I was little, and I'm so grateful to have known their music through out my life.
To me, it’s about the end of a bad relationship. Sad, but for the best in the end. He’s sailing around Tahiti to clear his mind. Not a bad way to nurse a broken heart.
I believe Steven Stills wrote the song in the wake of David Crosby's being arrested and incarcerated for cocaine possession. Crosby was badly addicted at that point, and with all stripped away (and nothing but his flagship, music), David Crosby beat coke addiction in prison. Although the lyrics aren't about all that, I believe that as being out on the water, away from it all, can give clarity, realization, and refreshed purpose, so was Crosby's yearlong prison stint, and Stills captured that, along with - just as you point out - other hard things going on at the time, likely relationship's ending. The quiet resolve in their vocals during the verses, and then, their flamboyant joy in the chorus has always been a magical, heavenly blend to me. Thank you for pointing out the percussion role - it never occurred to me!
When I used to sing to this , as a younger person, I would feel so empowered, it was unreal! I would play this loud so no one could hear me singing, everyday, for quite awhile, after I school! Thank you Harri!
Well done, young man. I’ve been listening to Cosby, Stills and Nash since before they got together. Since the 1960’s. Buffalo Springfield, The Hollies and The Byrds. Good times. A good time to grow up. A great atmosphere to develop your mind and your world view. You listening to this nd sharing it gives me hope for the future. I’m 73 and still enjoying music. Please. Continue with what you do.
Living in the USA, I’ve never seen the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere until I took my wife to S. Africa in 2017. We went on a night Safari drive and witnessed the Southern Cross for the first time on the hood of a land cruiser sipping wine in the African bush. I thought of this song. It was a magical moment in my life. Great reaction, Harri!
A city boy would've hopped into his car and drove to the state line and then back home. Forrest Gump would've run across the country and back; perhaps more than once. This broken-hearted musician got into his boat and set out to find his shining comfort star .. the Southern Cross. Great reaction, Harri.
We’re all so lucky that Crosby Stills and Nash discovered that fateful day at Joni Mitchell’s house that they could harmonize beautifully. It was quite by accident. Later when they added Young and his guitar it was full and complete. A little something extra. No one could match their sound. It always takes me right back to those special days.
Neil Young was Stephen Still's band mate from the Buffalo Springfield. When Neil joined Crosby, Stills, and Nash they produced their first album together Deja Vu. It produced hits like Woodstock, Teach Your Children and Our House. So many great hits together. Thanks Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
57 years ago I saw Buffalo Springfield in concert. First concert I ever saw ... in the college gym!! "For what it's worth" evolved into CSN & Y and timeless music. Thanks for the memory. Music today cannot hold a candle. What song, from today, will we be singing in 50+ years?
This is my favorite CSN song, and that is saying a lot. It is one I sing along with the chorus as loud as I can (as long as I am in privacy because I have a horrible singing voice).
Wooden Ships is like a brother to the Southern Cross. I think the constellation is a reminder of the "larger voice" that's calling and saying don't forget what Heaven brought you and me.
Really love this as a piece of soft rock, it's soothing and uplifting, and after I did a quarter at sea where we travelled to Australia and back by ship, seeing the southern cross in person was a surprisingly moving experience. It was this immediately visible symbol that the earth is round and the universe is vast and to see it over the horizon of an open sea really feels wondrous and this song does a great job of capturing the mood of seeing it.
Such a happy sailing song from south of the equator. Good for them. I'm a huge John Hall / Orleans fan and also Loggins and Messina, "Full Sail"album. They have lived a full musical life and chose to share part of their lives through this beautiful music
I've had that song in my life 30+ years! For me its a confluence of emotions and memories. To a few of us its a signal flair for help and we have always beennnn each other for each other! SAS! 94
Damn I miss my vinyl and my rig. Kenwood 600 stereo amp, Technics 1200 turntable, a set of AR 3 speakers and a set of Bose 201 speakers, and a pair of Panasonic studio monitor headphones.
Oh Harri, I came on this sad day we lost David Crosby to see if you reacted to any CSN songs. You have such heart. Those harmonies are so beautiful. Great song. Loss of a great legend, but he left us his talent to last.
I can remember the first time hearing this song it was on my way home from college about 2:30 in the morning on a long stretch of country road with a full moon view will never forget it
I was a teenager when CS&N we were first coming on the music scene… Around the Woodstock era. I still get goosebumps and a warm heart listening to their harmonies.
Delicious angelic harmonies. This is one of those special songs that when it hits at the right moment, really moves you to think about life and the amazing and temporary journey we are all on together.
You are correct the song is about a and that relationship that has come to an end. The Southern Cross is a star constellation viewable in the Southern Hemisphere. All he has left is his boat and it's name is Music.
I saw them once about 40 years ago and they were unbelievable! I was so excited to be seeing them that when we arrived I accidently locked my keys in the car with the engine Luckily, people parked nearby had a coat hanger which I used to break into my own car and didn't miss a minute of the show.
This song used to be the anthem of my fantasy of sailing away. A very real and possible option in my life given my lifetime of sailing and seafaring. Life got in the way and forty years have passed. Now too old and cautious…breaks my heart that i never took the leap. I still dream of that warm water, big jib top pulling hard, main slightly backwinding as she slips down the face of a wave, slight helm, nothing but the sound of the wind and the water…
Saw these guys twice. Great both times. Graham Nash pointed to me as I was squished against the fence in the front & he flipped me his guitar pick. Maybe because I was older & he recognized the shirt I was wearing from an older concert. I have it in a frame with the concert ticket. The guitar, & voices are amazing. And they are just simple guys, sitting on stools playing. No fancy sets. Great!! This is my favorite song by them. Thanks for taking me back. And that's the cd case I have.

That percussion in the background is probably Joe Lala from Tampa. He worked congas with Steve Stills. I knew Joe from working the clubs myself. When I moved to Miami Joe was with The Blues Image with Mike Panera. They had a hit with "Ride Captain Ride" once moved to the LA scene where Joe quickly became in demand for adding that special sauce with his drumming. Brother you should have heard The Blues Image on a good night live. It would have exploded your head. Tightened up your wig. Made you forget about yesterday and tomorrow. Many's a night I just stood there frozen in time. Watching those guys on the bandstand lay it down for real. What he did with Steve was great too but live music was the THING back then.
Gotta say this guy is one of my favorite music reaction guys. He seems truly genuine. My other point,if you have the means,I run a pair of early 70s sansui sp-2500s. They sound great, ands it's like a time machine listening to old music on old speakers.
Love the sound of CS&N They were one of the folk rock supergroups of the 60's-70's. I had a few of their albums. They have so many great songs such as "Marrakesh Express", "Helplessly Hoping", "Wooden Ships", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" etc. Another great album is "Deja Vu" where Neil Young joined them. It has other hit songs such as "Teach Your Children", "Woodstock", "Carry On" & "Our House".
love this one. also Harri David Crosby is very active on twitter and open to questions and such. He's a very chill dude and super friendly. He and Jason Isbell both.
The song is both about Stephen Still's divorce and his travels on his boat to escape the sadness and also about David Crosby's addictions. He didn't even sing directly on this as he was in rehab. Ppl like James Taylor and Linda Rondstadt filled in for extra backing vocals. One of the best songs ever...and the Southern Cross is a constellation only seen in the Southern hemisphere
You've nailed it my friend! Stills reworked a song called Seven League Boots into this song he said was about sailing the French Polynesian (where the Southern Cross constellation can be easily viewed) to help his healing of a divorce from French singer-songwriter Veronique Sanson. Just a great flowing Acoustic Guitar song. Now YOU know! Lol
When you see the Southern Cross for the first time....I remember, as a young Navy officer in 1978, dealing with a long distance relationship. This song speaks so much to my heart.
My brother... with your ausie or kiwi accent should know the southern cross is such a rare and amazing thing in the sky reserved for you Southern Hemisphere dwellers 🙏🏻🦾♥️🦾😋
